Hi all,

May will be the time for me to visit one of the parts of the US I
don't know yet. Lots of you may live in one of those areas, so any
advice is more than welcome. Or if anything in this list doesn't
deserve a detour, please let me know too !
The trip should mainly include the following :
Arizona : Tucson -can calexico play there May 9 ? ;-) -Saguaro Park-
Tombstone
NM : Las Cruces-White Sands-Cloudcroft-Albuquerque-Santa Fé-Las Vegas-
Taos
Colorado : Sand Dunes ?-Durango-Mesa Verde ?-Colorado Springs-Denver-
Rocky Mountain NP-Dinosaur
Utah : Flaming Gorge-Arches-Canyonlands-Nebo Loop-Salt Lake City
Wyoming : Jackson-Grand Teton-Yellowstone-Cody
South Dakota : Deadwood-Rapid City-Mt Rushmore-Badlands

Any nice place to enjoy good music in the evening would be greatly
appreciated. All Alt-country/Americana more than welcome !
Thanks in advance,

Arnaud

One more SCAC tourdate reminder ... and the video, filmed by George Cessna, is Americadio!  I fuggin' LOVE that song!!  One of the bloggers said that the video is the studio track against live footage and maybe that's so; but in the few scenes where you can actually see lips moving, it matches up pretty well ...

I asked David once what 'BPF" meant and he said it's
from when he was sick and had a fever...he was vague
about it, but I gathered he imagined these images in
his fevered state...again , it's just my personal take
on his music, but almost all of his music to me, has
that hyperreal and yet dreamlike quality of not really
being real, not just BPF;))) Ray

drift like sleep
into the hotel montana
lay low for thy names sake
el matador louisiana

Purely on a level of personal interpretation, I've
always found the imagery of this verse to be profound.
Drifting, tumbleweed, drifters this has a connotation
to anyone who has driven across big sky country
(Montana). It is a driftless landscape. There is
sense of wide open country, naked to the elements
juxtaposed with a hotel a place of refuge. The singer,
longs for rest. Refuge is picked up in the next line
with its reference to God. El Matador Louisiana, that
connotes red velvet and rouged lips and again for a
person with a sense of the sacred and profound, it's
symbolic of worldly accoutrements something that
offers the traveler on a spiritual path no refuge.
This is a song that hearkens of travel, the toll it
takes and the weariness it causes. Simply what it
means to me, I know it's vague as well.

i interviewed DEE after that album came out (the article was printed
in a magazine called HM...) and he gave me very vague answers, saying
something to the effect that those were both places that were near and
dear to his heart. i think it's because of people. he wouldn't say
where they were specifically. i always assumed that the louisiana one
might be someplace he found or visited while they were recording low
estate.

no way of knowing.

consider them inside nods to people we don't know, i suppose.

The Slim Cessna's Auto Club MySpace page has been updated ... with new info on the new studio album slated to be released March 25th - the long drought is over!  Produced by Bob Ferbrache this time, and you know what that means!  It's called Cipher ... and when you open the MySpace page, the player starts with Americadio and it'll have your ass kicked within ten seconds if that long.  Then it goes to Children Of The Lord ... let the party begin!  Oh my God!!

Looks like we also have a tour coming up in March that, this time, will cover the Pacific NW, West Coast and Texas, with an album release show at the Gothic on St. Pat's Day.  No better way to celebrate!  (Europeans -- let 'em know you want to see 'em -- mail@... )

The Alternative Tentacles page has been updated as well:
(Select SCAC from the drop-down menu at the upper right-hand corner of the page, and try not to laugh too hard at the Halloween Trekkies ... still lots of older mp3's on the band's page ...)

Hallelujah .. salvation cometh!!

Thanks to everyone for replying to my question about the quote in the lyrics.  It was driving me crazy.  I could hear the singing in my head and I was sure it was chronologically from Folklore onwards and I kept looking for it on that album and on all the Woven Hand albums.  I was beginning to think i had imagined it.  Can't believe I forgot about Whitewashed.  I have Short Stories, i've had it since release but it didn't have the staying power all of the 16hp/WH albums have had for me.  The problem is I don't love another song quite as much as Whitewashed (but I do really like Sorry).  Thank you so much ... listening to Whitewashed as I type this.  Oh how I missed it.  Thank you.

oh yeah totally!  i think it's on a fairly rare seven inch that came out in 98, or something like that.

no one really knows what the lyrics are except for that one part you're talking about.

thanks for bringing it up, though!

The lyrics are in the song "Whitewashed" on the CD "short stories"
from Lilium.

Whitewashed
Kiss a velvet doll
strung high on the wall
oak and pine
mahogany mine
the eyes of mercy they are thine

We look for the better angels of our nature
we look in vain
speak truth
cost as it may
every seeking a narrower way
ever weak
however strong
they are most beautiful before they're gone

Whitewashed
given foothold and license
you snuck in here on a folk song
try yourself
do something
rise from the ground like a flower
prove to be
be found to be

What does the lord require
to do justly
to love mercy
to walk humbly on his ground
he does set straight with a glance
guilt washed down in weeping

Don't come around my dreams no more
with a fist full of stick
come in the smile of Elijah
he is the lord and healer of the sick

Les absents ont toujours tort
les absents ont toujours tort

Klaatu Barada!

The song is called "Whitewashed". It's on the fantastic Lilium (the side project of Pascal Humbert and Jean-Yves Tola) album "Short Stories" and features David on vocals.

The lyrics are:

Kiss a velvet doll

strung high on the wall

oak and pine

mahogany mine

the eyes of mercy they are thine

We look for the better angels of our nature

we look in vain

speak truth

cost as it may

every seeking a narrower way

What does the lord require

to do justly

to love mercy

to walk humbly on his ground

he does set straight with a glance

guilt washed down in weeping

Don't come around my dreams no more

with a fist full of stick

come in the smile of Elijah

he is the lord and healer of the sick

Betreff: [16horsepower] quote question

Ok this is a bit of an odd question but it's been troubling me for a few days.  Is there a WH or 16HP song which incorporates in the lyrics the following bible quote from the book of Micah 'What does the Lord require?  To do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with God" ?  I keep thinking there is, but i can't for the life of me remember which song.  Of course chances are i'm completely wrong and my memory deceives me.

any help appreciated.

A Familyre Christmas - Vol. 1

"It's the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
a download in a Danielson tree!"

That's right, folks.

Since Monday, Dec. 10, at the Sounds Familyre Blog, we've been hard at work on stocking-stuffers for you and your loved ones: Christmas tunes (original and otherwise) performed by the Sounds Familyre Famile! One song per day for thirteen days. Baker's dozen!

All songs are FREE for downloading, so you can make your very own 'A Familyre Christmas - Vol. 1' CDs! When you go to the blog, scroll down to the widget and click on the tab that pops up when you roll-over the file name. Then click on the option you want ('preview', 'download', or 'get web link'). Make sure to come back tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and the day after that...

Finally, to download the album cover (created by the inimitable Anita Santiago), just click on the image at the top of the blog post. The album cover is already formatted with jewel-case dimensions, so all you need to do is print to 8 1/2 x 11 paper, and you’re ready to roll!

The list of contributors is as follows (though not necessarily in this order): Danielson, Leopulde, Dan Zimmerman, Elin, Soul-Junk, Lenny Smith, Joshua Stamper, Rachel, Ben + Vesper, Sufjan Stevens, Woven Hand, Half-handed Cloud, and The Singing Mechanic.

Enjoy!

Daniel Tree

Last but not least, Sounds Familyre is offering $2 off all non-Danielson, non-vinyl releases. We’re also bringing back the Danielson T-Shirt sale: $4 off all Danielson T’s! All this plus free shipping? It really is Christmas! The sale ends Saturday, Dec. 22, so be a smart shopper and click here!

Happy Holidays!

Everyone at Sounds Familyre

Thanks to the people who tried to help me. Though normally I know how
to get these things in...

I have one of the 2 files downloaded now. I did it the same as
yesterday, but this time it worked :-)

The other file is stuck somewehre in the middle. I might give it
another try tomorrow.

Copy the link, like someone already said, but...
when I pasted it there were spaces in it, If you see
spaces your link take them out and it should download
for you.

I don't think I could appreciate his art any more.
It's a sad story but damn, when he did it, I wrote
that band off.

Good thing she and her parents were "somebody"s or else he probably
wouldn't have even gotten that.  Regardless of how I liked his band, I
can't in good conscience bring myself to feel much more than repulsion
for the man.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but I agree with these sentiments completely.  Bertrand Cantat had and still might have great talent, but he discounted it all and threw it all away when he committed his violent, misogynistic crime.
