Last night I saw Woven Hand at the Naked Song Festival in Eindhoven,
Netherlands. Actually it was Dave Eugene Edwards, accompanied by his
guitar player Peter van Laarhoven.

At this festival artists are asked to perform in their most stripped
setting, hence only Dave Eugene and Peter. I liked the songs where
Dave Eugene performed solo best.

Apart from older songs he did a few new ones and a beautiful rendition
of Dylan's "As I Went Out One Morning".
Down In Yon Forest and Phyllis Ann were goose bumps versions.

To the best of my knowledge I made this setlist:

01. Whistling Girl
02. new song ( Rising Sun?)
03. The Speaking Hands
04. new song ( Hand To Mouth?)
05. Dirty Blue
06. Down In Yon Forest
07. new song, not sure??? ( down your cheek, your neck, your feathers)
09. Deerskin Doll
10. encore applause
encore
11. Phyllis Ann

I recorded the show and it turned out very good: the acoustics of the
venue very fantastic and the crowd respectful. It needs very little
mastering, so later today the recording will be available on Dime.

Hi all, cool, I agree Ordy is-wow! The 'close to her
chest' lyrics are the new lyrics for 'Phyllis
Ann'...the 'hand to mouth' line is from 'Into the
Piano'...if the 2 new songs we have are any
indication, then 10 Stones should be beyond belief!!

Thank you all for your insight and responses. I'll chalk up the new
songs as just that, new and unnamed (to us, anyway).

I wish I'd taken advantage of the fact that several of the shows were
only a few hours drive from where I live, and had seen multiple
shows. If the tall fellow selling their merchandise tells the truth
(!), then maybe they'll tour the Southern US again in the fall behind
the album release.

As for Ordy - my word. Such a dynamic presence, he walks the fine
line of being an integral part of their performance w/o really
drawing attention to himself. Many of the audience gravitated to
stand in front of David, I stood by the drum kit and was often
mesmerized by what he was doing.

Thanks again. No, sorry, I did not record it.

Ward,

I was at the Asheville show as well - it was great to hear DEE perform with Ordy (talented guy!). I heard DEE live last year for the first time in Chapel Hill and he was just doing an acoustic set then.

I'm not sure about the lyrics in the third song but I can confirm you're right about the sixth song - I recognized the Job references as well. The interlude in Black Soul Choir was the same as when I heard him in Chapel Hill - I didn't recognize it though.

BTW, did you record the concert?

Hey Ward,

We caught three consecutive shows this tour (Chicago/Dubuque/Des
Moines), and I took set lists for each (Dubuque was one of the finest
shows I've seen from David, dating back to 95-96 in Denver). The
"hand to mouth" song was in each of them, as was the Horse Head Fiddle
bit. In talking to Ordy, it became evident that DEE improvs a lot on
his songs and throws in pieces from this and that a lot. In addition
to his "glossolalia", he did some wonderful medleys (Down in Yon
Forest>My Russia>Speaking Hands), and changed the tone of several
pieces that come off being much quieter on album than when performed.

I took a gander at the "official" set list page that David and Ordy
had, but I can't recall what the "hand to mouth" song was titled.
Sorry I'm not of more help . . .

Here are my three lists (sorry for the ALL CAPS, but it's a quick cut

Hey Ward!

Here's the setlist of the Asheford show (The Grey Eagle - 15th April 2008):

Tin Finger

Whistling Girl

Horse Head Fiddle

New song!

Blue Pail Fever

The Speaking Hands

New Song!

Dirty Blue

Down in yon Forest

Phyllis Ann/Swedish Purse

Chest of Drawers

Wooden Brother

Deerskin Doll

Black Soul Choir

Winter Shaker

Your Russia

The line

"she comes down the hall in his morning dress
and in his morning dress she is free"

is from the very first version of "Deerskin Doll"! David changes the words for the regular version on "Mosaic".

Take care,

Alex

[I cross-posted this on the Woven Hand facebook pages as well. You'd
think for my first post on this list I'd have made it an exclusive
one...]

I had the good fortune to finally see DEE perform in person on the
most recent Woven Hand tour of the U.S. Seemed like a long time
coming, and it was worth the wait.

I'm trying to put together the set list of the show in Asheville, NC
on April 15th. Two songs in particular from the evening I do not
recognize. I assume they are new, but want to post pieces of the
lyrics so someone can confirm it.

Third song in the set - he actually began the with lines from "Horse
Head Fiddle" and "Outlaw Song", before the song started in earnest -
some of the lines were:

"the night holds a candle to you
I see you are a hummingbird
living in a shadow...."

"He rises to the sun..."

Sixth song from set:

"did your hand clothe his neck with mane"

"he rushes out to meet the sword
he laughs at fear and does not dismay" (note this is from the book of
Job)

"lay hand to mouth"

Those are pieces of the two songs I did not recognize. If anyone can
name them, that would be nice.

The live show was extremely rewarding in that he mixed bits of his
songs together to make new songs, and even played familiar songs with
new melodies. At one point he played what was essentially a medley
of "Down in Yon Forest" and "Swedish Purse", with a middle part I did
not know. A sample lyric from that middle part:

"she whispers like an aspen tree"

Then an interlude in the middle of Black Soul Choir included the
lines"

"she comes down the hall in his morning dress
and in his morning dress she is free"

and

"He does walk with me in the cool of the evening"

If anyone recognizes those snippets I'd like to know, as well.

thank you everyone, and take care..

- Ward

On the subject of b-sides... does anyone know where to find the studio version of "flowers in my heart"?  I had a copy years ago, and loved it!  It's one of those banjo tunes that you can't get out of your head.

Thanks Ray, yes indeed it's a version of Potter's Field Special which appears on Introducing...  I think 'worry' is one i have never heard.  I'm thankful that almost all of the recordings of this great band are available to those who want them including the early demos in Olden and excellent (with the exception of the glitchy concert recordings on the live DVD) live recordings.

George, that live DG/Clogger track is 'Potters Field
Special', they only played once live...there is a
studio of that on the Gents 1st LP...there are early
versions of Phyllis ruth and Dead run that were early
b-sides, also 'Worry' which was only released in
Germany and on promo singles, not to the public...hope
that helps;))

just off the top of my head there are some songs which are not on the US studio LPs but for the most part they are cover versions performed live.  (and if you have Hoarse and the new live album you are mostly covered)

Fire Spirit (the Gun Club) - on EU edition of Low Estate and live version on Hoarse
the Partisan (Leonard Cohen/traditional) - EU edition of Low Estate and live version on live march 2001
Day of the Lords (Joy Division) - live on Hoarse (also b-side to Clogger i think)
24 Hrs (Joy Division) - live march 2001
Heart and Soul (Joy Division) - live on one of the dvds
Bad Moon Rising (CCR)- for heaven's sake single and live on hoarse
Ditch Digger - EU version of low estate, i think the US version doesn't have it
De-Railed (Rainer Ptacek) - B-side to Splinters
Whitewashed - on the Short Stories album by Lilium (16hp song in all but name)
there is a song which is part clogger part the denver gentlemen which i remember hearing a live version of.
there is also the beautiful song Phylis Ann which hasn't yet found it's way on a woven hand album and to the best of my knowledge is only a live song.

there are some b-sides on the old A&M singles but i don't remember which ones and i think for the most part they were songs which were on the albums in some shape or form.

hope this was helpful

Seeing that I only have the regular US releases from 16HP, what would
I be missing from my collection as far as Non-LP tracks go?

Also, has anyone been able to rip the audio from the Live 2xDVD?

the tracklist is on the glitterhouse website.  it's a concert they did in spring 2001 in London in support of secret south.  i was at that gig and it was truly phenomenal.  I saw them 4 times during that tour and it was the best 4 for gigs i saw them (or anyone) play.  the lineup was never as strong as when they had Stephen Taylor.  The setlist consists of a lot of Secret South (basically all of it except Just like Birds, and Nobody Cept You) and some standards from the EP, Sackcloth and Low Estate.

I'm still waiting for my copy to arrive from Glitterhouse, it's been over two weeks since I ordered it.  I hope this does justice to this great band ... this great Live band, especially as I personally felt the live DVD was mostly disappointing (why release something with sound glitches when there are so many beautiful, crystal clear recordings?).  I will post impressions here as soon as i listen to the cd.

so yes, it might be a bit of milking, but who can begrudge them for it.
