Subject: Sherreece - An Inspired Singer/Songwriter!
mannieb2004
Send Email Send Email

By Timothy Peters

In recent years artists such as Creed, P.O.D., and
Jars of Clay have brought new credibility to
Christian rock by applying to studio recordings
and live performances the sophisticated production
values of the best secular artists. As a result,
Christian rockers - both performers and their
audiences - have learned how to be cutting edge
without compromising their Christian beliefs.

Now, we can add to that list Sherreece
(http://www.sherreece.com), a New Orleans-based
singer and songwriter whose fiery self-produced CD
shows that she has something to say and all the
tools she needs to say it. In songs such as "When
I Die," "Holy of Holies," "Change," "Where is the
Love?", and "Wings," Sherreece backs her powerful
contralto with expertly arranged and produced rock
tracks, featuring her collaborator Byron Santo.
It's a CD that demands to be heard.

Chief among her gifts is a voice that any diva
would envy. Indeed, Sherreece studied voice for
many years, and her arrangements have operatic and
choral touches throughout, especially in "Wings"
and "When I Die." It's a very physical sound,
appropriately enough for a gym co-owner and
certified instructor in cardio-kickboxing. In the
driving, incantatory "Holy of Holies" she sounds
like a veritable rock priestess ("You are the Holy
of Holies/Nailed to the cross/You gave you life
for me"). She notes: "People who are not
performers have no idea how something like singing
can drain you physically."

If Sherreece sounds driven, like a singer with a
mission, it's because she is. "I feel God has
chosen me to do this and there is no turning back.
Most of my songs are really intended for people
that may not have found or may not have made a
commitment to Christ. This is what God wants me to
do, to help people to realize what they are
dealing with and that they can turn to Christ."

What is innovative about Shereece's music is how
she melds psalm-like lyrics of spiritual
transformation and Christian striving ("What is
this darkness/In my life/That shadows over
me/Where is the love/My heart is aching/Where is
the love/My heart is breaking") with a
full-bodied, modern, techno-savvy rock sound that
would be equally at home on an arena stage or in a
dance club. In fact, European audiences have been
especially responsive to her rhythms, inspiring
some DJs to produce dance-floor friendly remixes
of her tracks.

"My songs easily adapt to different genres. I am
very pleased that DJs from around the world have
been interested in creating remixes of my songs.
This way I can reach a larger audience. It's like
planting seeds so people may listen and maybe turn
to Christ as I did."

MUSIC ZINE: SICK AMONG THE PURE (DOT) COM
TARGET: http://www.sickamongthepure.com

Greetings!

All Hallow's Eve strikes again! And this time, only a day before a
select few vote in another U.S. Presidential Election. Meanwhile, we
gnomes and elves (and various other heathen slaves mucking about the
place) spin gold from straw, unravel tall tales, and incessantly wag
our own tails while waiting for YOU to decide just where to begin
exploring this fabulous new edition of SickAmongthePure!

MUSIC ZINE: SICK AMONG THE PURE (DOT) COM
TARGET: http://www.sickamongthepure.com

Before we dive into the political meat market, or debate anything at
all, we should pay homage to "two decades of conceptual continuity,"
otherwise known as "Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid," or KMFDM!

Homage to KMFDM...
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/2004/11/KMFDM/KMFDM.html

Finally (sheesh!)...

(we come to a band name that probably everyone here will recognize!)

KMFDM :: doin't it yet again (a treat for the freaks)
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/2004/11/KMFDM/KMFDM.html

From what I understand, Ms. Cifarelli becomes rather chatty with our
faithful weather-beaten SATP reporter, and takes to spilling the beans
on just how the most recent KMFDM tour against the music industry
almost shattered like an ashtray, or maybe it was more like a beer
bottle collision?

Dæmon, SATP Managing Editor, rag-tag vagabond,
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/Team/Daemon.html

and all around stowaway field journalist, took a holiday from the
drudgery of making Krispy Kremes to hijack the magical musical KMFDM
tour bus! Several passengers stowed on board apparently flaunt names
too difficult to repeat without help from a paid professional. Maybe
you can sound out their names on your own? If it helps matters any, I
could spell out the first and last names slowly for you to piece
together again. Ordered alphabetically, here's the first one:

L-u-c-i-a ... C-i-f-a-r-e-l-l-i

And next we find... here it is:

S-a-s-c-h-a ... K-o-n-i-e-t-z-k-o

http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/2004/11/KMFDM/KMFDM.html

In other news...

Blow-Up :: the real dance revolution
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/2004/11/Blow-Up/Blow-Up.html

Hollywood has NOT seen the last of the late, great Blow-Up dolls
remaining from the 5th annual SATP Debauchery Lounge, an
around-the-clock, all-out fuckfest involving only the latest in latex
rubber dolls...

What? Hey, Dæmon. What's up? Of course, I can say that! I'm the
Editor, right?

Oh, my apologies, folks! Apparently, there is absolutely no connection
between the following Blow-Up interview and the recent "Exploding
Plastic Pleasure" fest that we [laughs] endured...

I'll tell you how well connected it is...
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/2004/11/Blow-Up/Blow-Up.html

This Blow-Up interview has dirt on Hollywood, and the real Exploding
Plastic Pleasure is a music release that also includes references to
and vocals by both Deborah Harry and Lydia Lunch. Additionally, we
find more familiar personalities, and even entire music groups,
including: The Flaming Lips, Madonna, Rod Stewart, Yoko Ono, Esthero,
Robert De Niro, and John Maynard Keynes.

NEXT...

Sonya Brown and I both wandered into Sabala's Mt. Tabor to find Icon
of Coil relaxing in the Green Room. Without hesitation, we hurtled
ourselves into the room and began to pounce upon the traveling
musicians, entirely unannounced. We then proceeded to bombard those
three weary minstrels with one question after another, pelting each
one with sarcasm and disdain until, at long last, they arose in a
rather foul mood, and proceeded to evict us from the venue, tossing
rotten eggs, tomatoes, and other garbage in our general direction.
Would you like to read what they had to say before we got smothered in
alcoholic waste?

Jett Black (Editor profile)
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/Team/Black.html

And then, not long after...

Not to be outdone, Sonya Brown retreats back again to Sabala's Mt.
Tabor, Indie music and films venue, to attack another innocent band of
musicians! This time, history would reveal the baffled band to be none
other than legendary Goth Rockers turned EBM/Rock'n'Roll wizards,
Written In Ashes!

Sonya Brown (writer profile)
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/Team/SonyaBrown.html

Now, Let's Globetrot...
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/

Sandra Espinoza (of Liquid Mercury), and also a new contributor to
SATP, caught wind of our interview with Icon of Coil and decided to
interview another European band called Blank.

As it turns out, Sebastian (of Moonitor, and the man whom Side-Line
magazine describes as, "the mastermind behind Icon of Coil") became
involved with a collaborative "Blank:Moonitor" CD release, apparently
entitled, Uturn 3: the darkside of the beat.

The moral of these ramblings might be that if you dig on Icon of Coil,
then you might like to check out Blank, and also Moonitor.

Or, if you dig on Moonitor, then perhaps you should check out Icon of
Coil?

Or, maybe you should just check out the latest news and insights into
both Blank and Icon of Coil?

Blank Sounds and Expressions :: an interview with Blank
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/2004/11/Blank/Blank.html

NEXT...
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/

Now, have you ever thought of a professional career playing QUAKE,
DOOM, or something else just as quick and deadly? Or, have you "ever
seen a grown man naked?"

Beware! Brad Hirn (SATP Copy Editor/Staff Writer)
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/Team/Hirn.html

will have you "quaking" in your "I Rock" boots! He'll have you running
from the LAN, and screaming (at the top of your lungs), "BYOC!"

Doggonnit!...
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/

If government ain't the most nonsensical, asinine, and
as-stubborn-as-nails conception ever to become elevated above the
human beings on this planet, then, I dunno what to call it!

Still, I believe Evan Long, SATP Staff Writer,

http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/Team/Long.html

might have another name for governmental oversight.

I believe he might be the one to point out the "bad breeding" that has
infiltrated those ivory castles, with elected arms descending elbows
into apparently bottomless coffers replenished annually by our
respective tax dollars.

Ah, go on, all you anti-social gaming fiends! Read it! We'll still see
you at the next Anime con!

Bad Breed(ing) :: or: why the government wants to ban a member of my
family

Gettin' Political...
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/
(or, Let me hear your voter-talk, your voter-talk…)

Recent media effort to saturate both eligible and non-eligible voters
alike with racy reports on religion, economics, and both domestic and
foreign political bugaboos have many of the SATP gnomes seeking deeper
burrows of hopefully sane refuge.

As if in direct contrast to the former description, a few of the other
SATP gnomes scuttling about have taken to carrying small and large
protest signs aloft, either in favour of or staunchly against some
(apparently nefarious) character known around these parts only as
"Bush." Honestly, I have heard a few other popular names given to this
notorious one, which I would just as soon care not to repeat.

Zodiac, one of our more out-spoken protestors,
http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/Team/Zodiac.html

detests burrow-making and has, in fact, drawn up a soap-box, and is
even now haranguing cable TV solicitors and other flotsam and jetsam
scum who were nearly about to vomit upon our front porch.

If you listen closely, you can just catch a bit of an argument already
in progress...

recent contributors to SATP, unfortunately could not be with us today
due to traffic somewhere on the 405. He managed to submit a transcript
with a little help from a digital assistant. So, we'll call this one a

Folks,

Great news article below. It's democracy in action. Possibly 75% or
more turnout in some places are predicted--even in wet, cold rains; even
in snow. One way or another, today will be a turning point in American
history. If you haven't voted yet, VOTE--and be a part of that history.

Last week we received some exciting news that I would like to share with
the group. We learned that for the fourth year in a row, one of our CDs
has made the entry ballots for the Grammy Awards.
We would like to ask any fellow Naras members on this list to consider
"The Man Behind The Curtain" by James Kennedy (field 1, category 10 entry

Howdy,
I'm Aaron Childs. I host The Sonic Chronicles on Live365.com
(www.live365.com/stations/aaronchilds), and you're receiving this e-mail
because you're an artist or a manager/promoter/etc. of an artist that is
being played on the show, or you're on one of the many music related forums
I subscribe to. The Sonic Chronicles plays blues, rock, jazz, alternative,
electronica, and roots rock/americana/etc.
Whoops! I said I was bummed about Michigan losing to Michigan State. Damn,
was I wrong!!! What happened was, I awoke Saturday afternoon (the day before
was my birthday, and I was out celebrating.. need I say more?), and clicked
on the game. it was a few minutes left in the 4th quarter, and State was up
by double digits. Disgusted and thinking that there wasn't enough time for
'Big Blue' to do anything I turned it off, and started doing other things
around the house. Hell, I didn't realize Michigan had came back and finally
won it in triple overtime in what might have been the college football game
of the decade. So anyways, I've got egg on my face over that one. Feel free
to point and laugh.

Hi, bluegrass in Finland? Sure...why not? Check out Jussi Syren's band and
their newest CD.

JUSSI SYREN and the GROUNDBREAKERS – Sea of Changes
Bluelight Records BLR-331122
E-MAIL bluelight.records [at] @co.inet.fi OR info [at] syren.fi
SONGS - Sea of Changes, Some Old Side Road, Hauling' the Logs, Highways And
Gravel Roads, Man Made Of Glass, Simple Man, Stranger In A Strange Land, The
Legend Of Larry Thorne, Restless, Coal Mining Country, Darkness, Darkness,
Life Of A Steel Driving Man, Video:Life Of A Steel Driving Man
Playing Time – 35:56

When someone mentions bluegrass in Finland, I think of Jussi Syren. I still
recall the day about 20 years ago that I crossed paths with Jussi and his
band at the time (The Lake Country Boys) at a bluegrass festival in
Torsaker, Sweden. We hit it off immediately and jammed together until the
wee hours of the morning. I was very impressed by the young man from Finland
who had built his own mandolin, had an impressive understanding of bluegrass
music, and had composed a number of hard-driving original songs. I could see
that he and his band were going places.

Jussi Syren and the Groundbreakers formed in 1995 and have now become one of
the most active touring and recording bluegrass groups in Europe. “Sea of
Changes” is their third album release. While especially popular in their
native Finland, their recordings have built them a good reputation in the
worldwide bluegrass community. Tours have taken them to the U.S., Denmark,
Sweden and Holland.

Jussi Syren sings lead and plays mandolin. The Groundbreakers include J.P.
Putkonen (guitar), Tauri Oksala (banjo) and Kari Hella (bass). Guests
include Mika Railo (bass, one track), Marko Vanhatalo (resonator guitar, two
tracks), and Jimmy Sunnerbrandt (fiddle, three tracks).

Jussi Syren and the Groundbreakers prefer their bluegrass with an edginess
that gets your spine tingling. Their music is raw, pure and intense. A
bluesy, nothing-left-to-lose approach gives us a high-octane mix of
originals and covers. Five songs are drawn from Roger Ferris, Dennis William
Wilson, Charlie Daniels, Carl Perkins and Jesse Colin Young. “Darkness,
Darkness” is a favorite that packs a supreme wallop in the drive department.

The core of The Groundbreakers’ repertoire is original material, written
mainly by Jussi Syren. Six songs on this album are from Jussi, while Tauri
Oksala penned “Haulin’ the Logs.” “Highways and Gravel Roads” tells the
band’s story of life on the road. “The Legend of Larry Thorne” is about a
Finnish WWII and Vietnam War hero who was reported missing in action in
1965. His remains were found in 1999 and buried in Arlington, Virginia. In
the early 1900s, the men of the Syren Family were steel-driving men, and
Jussi pays tribute to them in “Life of a Steel Driving Man.” The
Groundbreakers’ third album closes with a music video of this song.

Besides bluegrass, Jussi Syren also occasionally plays guitar and sings
rockabilly music with “Jussi Syren Rockabilly Revival,” (with Mika Railo on
bass and Juha Kursi on drums). As Jussi Syren and The Groundbreakers spread
their name and music even further abroad, we certainly aren’t “Fin-ished”
hearing about them. (Joe Ross)

Subject: Vernon Neilly & G-Fire - Still Burning Bright
mannieb2004
Send Email Send Email

By Mark Kirby

Those who remember G-Fire will recall a bit more
than just the coolest smooth jazz on the planet.
The self-titled previous album gave an interesting
twist to the marketing angle of music. These days,
everyone from Mandy Moore to an ever-expanded
ocean of indie bands can be on top if they can
raise a thousand bucks and find the link to
DiscMakers. Like self-publishing, this tends to
beat quality control repeatedly on the head until
the industry is dumbed down into submission.

What the G-Fire experiment has latched onto is
album sharing. Find three musicians with a similar
feel for the music, form a band, then square the
CD into four corners, with each composer/player
taking one each. Well, it's what supergroups like
Queen used to do. For G-Fire II
(http://boosweet.com/GFire2.htm), the latest
jazz-infested treat features the works of Vernon
Neilly, Mark Whitfield, Kevin Chokan, Miguel Mega.

As usual, the fellows mesh perfectly, helped by
the fact that the supporting talent is so soulful.
Without looking at the CD track info, you'll find
yourself never noticing that "Don't You Cry"
bleeds in so well to the long version of "LFO"
that they are two separate songs.

"Don't You Cry" fills in your 2 a.m. night drive
with a positive outlook that can't possibly have
you falling asleep at the wheel, even though this
is technically smooth jazz on the adult
contemporary side, layered with steady and nearly
total Neilly control. The only thing the man
didn't do on the lyric-less song is the bass, cool
credit going to Charles Glen, who blends like
charcoal on a blackboard. Neilly's high plucks in
the electric lead guitar only show off the night,
not the man, making it as sweet as love, hold the
pain and heartache.

The killer tune on the disc might be the opening
"LFO" from Whitfield, which also comes back with
an extra minute at the end. George Fontanette's
muted trumpet matches moves with Whitfield's
taintless guitar lead via mirror-like precision.
The effective and never overdone drum programming
shakes steamily into Neilly's "Por Mi Amor"
(twice, once for an extra minute at the end, as
well), which blends an R&B color into the mix with
a slight female vocal. Sifting blues with jazz,
the experience simply allows Neilly to shine with
a seemingly improvised performance while oceans
sway in the mind and lovers embrace.

As Neilly admits, "The first G-Fire release had a
whole different purpose than the new G-Fire II
project in that G-Fire was a showcase of some of
the most traveled touring and session guitarists
in the music industry today as solo artists,
instead of their regular situations as sidemen. It
was my way of giving some very talented guys a
shot at being heard on a major global level. With
G-Fire II, it was planned to be more of a
commercial, radio friendly contemporary jazz
project, and that's how we went about recording
the songs for it."

Dear Fellow AIMusic Connoisseur,

I am writing to inform you of the release of 2 exceptional albums of music
featuring the pioneering Indian flutist, composer, choreographer,
musicologist and poet Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao -

Moonrise, Vol. 1, Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao, Live, Tabla : Ustad Allah Rakha. 24
bit digital sound
Moonrise, Vol. 2, Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao, Live, Tabla : Ustad Allah Rakha. 24
bit digital sound

I picked up these albums at www.shrimatis.com and www.indiaclub.com, where
they have been among the top of the Music CD 'Hotseller List' for the past
six months.

The albums feature live performances in 3 American cities by these two
legends of Indian classical music. The concerts in Los Angeles, New York and
San Francisco represent works of art that are spontaneously created but once
in a lifetime for the intellectual pleasure of generations to come.

The four selections in the albums represent Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao¹s genius
through creative masterpieces of improvisation that are at once profound and
shimmering in the colors of Raga and Tala, imbued with the spirit of its
ancient origins and interpreted for the modern ear in the originality of a
complete artist. Exemplary collaborator that he was, percussionist Ustad
Allah Rakha (on the Tabla) enhances the value of our experience with
dignity, dexterity and exuberance.

The performances feature four Ragas from South and North India, old and new,
set to seven rhythmic cycles - illustrating the breadth of the artists¹
expertise. In their glorious synergy, the four renditions represent the
artists' vision of a moon on the rise as twilight melts into night.

I highly recommend these albums to you. Please do listen to these albums and
share in the majesty of the best in Indian classical music.

Warm Regards,

Sanjay Kumar

Hi,
Here's a write-up about a cool indie release that recently came for review.
Adrienne will go far in the music business. I'll let you know how the seed
turns out in a few months. Check this out.

Originally from Florida, Adrienne Young may be a new face on the Nashville
music scene, but she and her band Little Sadie are making a big splash with
their neo-traditional sensibilities that incorporate elements of folk,
country, and bluegrass. Keep in mind, however, that this is an independent
release so just how far and wide will her largely original music get
disseminated? On the other hand, Adrienne is a recent Belmont University
graduate with a music business degree who has a considerable amount of
business acumen. This debut CD is packaged in such a way that garnered her a
Grammy nomination for best recording package. The tri-fold digipak comes
complete with a 20-page paper booklet (all lyrics included) and a small
packet of wildflower seeds. Take her advice to break dirt and cut the
furrow. With a voice as sweet as the lemon mint, Adrienne’s sharing a bit of
that passion and love for music that blooms in all of us.

The music on “Plow to the End of the Row” is solidly crafted and has a
pleasant, at times striking, feel. The band’s instrumental and vocal prowess
are more than sufficient, and Will Kimbrough’s and Todd Schneider’s french
harp playing (on two tracks) is an especially nice, relaxing touch. The
bluesy quality on “Home Remedy” is perfect to emphasize the power of love to
cure most anything. Other standouts include Tyler Grant’s lead guitar and
Clayton Campbell’s fiddling on a traditional tune like Leather Britches or
Lonesome Road Blues. The banjo (played by Robin Rucker, Ketchum Secor, Will
Kimbrough, or Adrienne) is only given a subordinate role for fill in ten
songs. My own personal preference calls for mandolin over snare, drums or
drum loops. Their vision for success today, however, necessitated the latter
forms of percussion, and this may actually allow them to get them more
airplay on the likes of Americana and public radio “fresh tracks” programs.
Electric guitar and drums draw them closer to the modern singer-songwriter
folk genre.

Adrienne’s messages are thought-provoking and presented with genuine
sincerity. Her advice in “Blinded by Stars” is to not “let the towncrier
decide if we go to war” and “don’t be blinded by stars tangled in stripes.”
Her song, “I Cannot Justify,” addresses reincarnation, but a deeper message
deals with personal growth as she sings “How can I justify the narrow
vantage of these eyes, such a good disguise, I cannot justify.” The title
cut is a straight-forward expression of the trials, tribulations and
hardships faced by farmers.

“Sadie’s Song” starts with the fiddle tune’s familiar riff but evolves to
become a tragic murder ballad of trust gone astray that provides us with
some insight into the rationale for Sadie’s ultimate demise. The song took
first-place in the bluegrass category of the 2003 Chris Austin Songwriting
Contest at MerleFest. “Poison” and “Nipper's Corner” get a little too
raucous and pop oriented for my own tastes, so I’m glad to see the band come
back to leaner and more acoustic arrangements by the album’s last few
traditional offerings.

Adrienne Young demonstrates a maturity that belies her age, and she’ll see
plenty of better days ahead. She’s been able to translate her vision into a
welcome and successful Americana journey. With her soft, silky voice and
songwriting talent, she’s sure to go far. I think she’s just trying to get
people reconnected with what’s important in life. She sings about being born
a rebel and questioning what she’s told. Let’s hope that her premonition “no
wonder this young skin I’m wearin’ feel so old” does not come true and
discourage her. In fact, it’s her confidence, independence and business savy
that should propel her to greater heights in an industry in need of
something organic, pure and fresh. (Joe Ross)

... Finally Free is quite simply the best song you will hear this
year. Difficult to categorize, more pop than anything, but Ms. Avery
has a fabulous voice. There are two more stunning tracks on here, the
more soulful Sweet Release and the jazzier Lovetrust...

Chasing Balloons is available on Robin's website at www.robinavery.com.

Robin, and producer, Paul Banman are currently busy in the studio
finishing up the recording of her full length album, The Way You Hold
Me, which will be released in early 2005. The album offers Robin's
collaboration with internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Warren Hill,
adding his artistry to a surprise track as featured guest.

This has been a busy year for performances. Robin and her band, The
Avery/Banman Project (A/B) most recently graced the main stage at the
annual Hollywood International Music and Art Festival in Hollywood,
Florida and the Palladium Plaza at CityPlace, in West Palm Beach,
Florida, the magnificent outdoor mega mall lined with upscale shops
and eateries.

Robin's fans write about her performances:

" I was captivated and mesmerized! I just loved your voice AND your
songs- please add me to your e-mail list.Keep the faith- there must be
a lot of people like me who appreciate talent and creativity, and you
have a great gift to share."

Best Wishes

Mik Groninger

Look for Robin and A/B to perform at The Palm Beach Post Sunday at the
Myer concert series, at the Myers amphitheater on December 12th in
West Palm Beach, Florida.

My Darlin’ Neurons:

We won’t over Burden this Space with Our Thoughts on the “election” since We
write precious too Much anyway, But know this: If each of Us doesn’t
Protect our freedoms Individually, then collectively our Freedoms will
slowly be eroded until there is nothing left but Government control of our
Very thoughts. If films and television and radio shows (you Know who you
are) claim that They and their Shows and Ideas are Not about That, Then they
will be “safe” until the End when The Fighters have all been eliminated.
When the Do-Nothings are the Only ones that are left Standing, they will be
Taken down as well because there Will be no one Left to Fight for them.
Have we Made ourselves clear? There will be more thoughts posted Here:
