hey adam...
Matt from The Lake Effect in Buffalo. I think
amplification needs vary depending on the group.
We're slightly larger than you are (7 members) and for
the "group" sound, we actually have a pair of
condenser mics in addition to a solo and perc mic.
These run into a 6 input amp that has "phantom" power
capabilities to power the condenser mics. We then
have 2 decent sized speakers but I'd have to go look
at them to check their wattage.
I would recommend a 6 input, phantom power-capable amp
for most groups. Yours in particular would benefit
because then each member can have his/her own mic. I
don't know if you have a "Guitar Center" in your area,
but that's where we got our setup (it also helped that
a former member of the group was a local music teacher
and got a professional's discount when we purchased
it). It ran us around $1,000 for the setup and we
still need to purchase a couple more mic stands and
some other things.
Hope that helps!
Happy Harmony!
