Soundboard thickness   Message List

Hello everyone,
I am a first time poster to this group.I am making a Trossengen shape lyre at
the moment.I say Trossengen shape because I am having to use materials that I
have to hand due to an extreme lack of funds at the moment. It is a rather nocked
together Lyre that I am building but so long as I call learn to play on it I
will be happy.
I have no Maple to use for the soundboard but I do have a nice piece of quarter
sawn Western Red Cedar that fits the bill. Can someone tell me how thick the
soundboard should be? It is about 7mm thick at the moment.Would thick in the
middle and thin at the edges be an option? Also, what is the advantage of using
soundholes?Seeing as it is not going to be an accurate reproduction I thought
sound holes may improve the sound.

Thanks
Greg

Cedar should work OK as a sound board; given that it is kind of soft, I would consider some bracing across the underside, especially under the bridge. Larry M...

Hi Greg, I would save the cedar for another time. Find yourself a bit of 1.5 to 3.0 mm plywood, and use that for your prototype instrument soundboard. Some...
