Here's what's happening this weekend at the Bradfordville Blues Club (BBC):
They start the weekend with a bang when *Blueground Undergrass* returns
for an encore performance on*Friday, July 3*. They blew away the BBC
last December and are poised to do it again. *Here's Gary's review of their
last **show: "**Blueground Undergrass shook the BBC on Saturday! The place
was sold out. **People waited outside by the fire for hours to get in. They
were still **coming in at 1:30. The band cranked up and before long the
dance floor **was a gyrating mass of warm bodies. The band and crowd fed off
each **other and by 2 a.m. the rafters were rockin, the walls were shakin'
and **moss was pouring off the oaks. The crowd went nuts and the band kept *
*coming back for encores. The ovation at the end was thunderous. The **dance
floor was as tightly packed as a can of sardines at closing time. **Who
wudda thunk it?" For those who missed it, you get another chance. This
eclectic 5 piece unit from Hotlanta consists of multi-instrumentalists and
singers including Jeff Mosier on electric banjo, acoustic banjo and
vocals; Johnny
Mosier on electric guitar, acoustic guitar and vocals; Mark Van Allen on
pedal steel, lap steel, dobro and vocals; Jack Watson on drums; and Andrew
Altman on acoustic and electric bass. Their music defies description and is
a concoction of untraditional bluegrass, southern rock, jazz, country, the
edges of the blues, and a full slice of Americana. Hearing is
understanding--check out their music at
http://www.myspace.com/bluegroundundergrass and at
http://www.bluegroundundergrass.com/. A Don't Miss Show! They'll even light
up the sky in between sets. Showtime is 9:30. Advance tickets are $13
available at http://www.bradfordvilleblues.com/ and for students and members
of any blues organization. Day of show tickets for all others are $15.
Advance tickets are strongly recommended. The Deb Callahan Band provides the
indoor fireworks on Saturday, July 4! She's as hot, steamy and sultry as a
summer night in Tallahassee. Deb's earlier shows fired up the place with a
high energy output that kept her and the dance floor moving all night long.
This four piece out of Philadelphia is fronted by Deb Callahan, an
entertainer, songwriter and singer with a rich, soulful voice. She's a
bundle of energy on stage, always movin' and dancin'. Blues Revue referred
to her as the next Bonnie Raitt and raves that "Philly's Deb Callahan has
the pipes, the songs and the raw talent to graduate to the next level". Deb
has an exciting stage presence complemented by solid hip shakin' tunes bound
to leave y'all hot and sweaty, too. You'll need to go out to the bonfire
to cool down. She's backed up by some of Philly's best musicians
including Allen
James on the guitar, Garry Lee on bass and vocals, and Tom Walling on drums.
These guys are tight and lots of fun. Their live shows feature a mixture of
blues, soul, soulful ballads, 'Nawlins funk and blues/rock offerings. The
band is a mainstay along the mid-Atlantic coast having played numerous
festivals from Pennsylvania to Virginia, including Jacksonville's Springing
the Blues Festival. Deb has 3 cd's "If The Blues Had Wings", the critically
acclaimed "The Blue Pearl" and most recently "Grit and Grace"--a title that
most aptly describes Deb's style. Hot stuff and a great prelude to the
fireworks show outside. Listen to Deb's music at
http://www.myspace.com/debcallahanband, More information and music at:
http://www.debcallahanband.com, Show time is at 9:30 and advance tickets are
$12 available at http://www.bradfordvilleblues.com/ and for members of any
blues organization. Day of show tickets are $14. Students get in for only
$10. CALL THE CLUB AT 850.906.0766 FOR RESERVATIONS TO EITHER SHOW. Ms.
Ernestine's crew will be fryin' her famous fish as usual so come hungry,
Terry's got the blues goin' in his Blues Room during set breaks and Beth and
Steve will have the bonfire set on low for romancin'.*

As we celebrate US Independence from Britain on the 4th, *Eclectic
Acoustic* will
also celebrate Canada's graduation from "colony" to "dominion" on July
1 at the Mockingbird Cafe in Havana on *Sunday, July 5*, from 12-3 pm. They
will offer a unique musical opportunity. Some of you folks have been asking
for more gospel music so *Judy, Mike, Steve *and* Norma* are going to bring
their favorites for a special sing-along hour. The music starts at noon and
they plan to warm up with our regular mix of folk songs (with a
celtic/Canadian sprinkle). They'll aim to start the gospel hour sometime
between 12:30 and 1:00 (and give you a chance to order and enjoy your tasty
brunch). After the celebrations of the 4th, go out and sing from their
shared heritage of gospel music. For more info, call 850-539-2212.

The* Sopchoppy Opry *is held the* last Saturday* of each month. Ir has been
called “The Little Opry that Can” by the Tallahassee Democrat, "a
re-creation of the original Grand Ole Opry 'experience'” by country music
historians and "the Big Bend’s showcase of country" (music) by those who
seek to play the Opry. But to the hundreds of fans who have enjoyed the Opry
since its inaugural performance in July 2000, the Sopchoppy Opry is "just
the best place to be the last Saturday night of each month" for great
country, bluegrass and gospel music! The Sopchoppy Opry is a tremendous
success story! It is among the longest running regularly scheduled stage
performances of live country music in north Florida. The 15,000+ visitors it
has brought to Sopchoppy, some from as far away as Australia and Ireland,
have given the economy a boost and the opportunity to show off the
restoration of historic Sopchoppy High School. 100+ individuals and more
than a dozen bands have showcased their musical/vocal talents as guest
performers on the Opry stage, and the revenue generated from ticket sales,
raffles, concessions and sponsorships has been donated to the restoration
efforts. Hundreds of hours in volunteer time have been given by musicians,
school alumni and friends. These are but a few of the many positive things
that have come from the Opry! Its greatest accomplishment might be that it
has demonstrated what can be done when unselfish, dedicated and talented
individuals work harmoniously together! To no one's surprise, the reason for
the Opry’s enduring success is the music of *South Bound*, the Opry’s
popular house band!

*• Florida Cattle Ranching: Five Centuries of Tradition* - This traveling
exhibit explores the long history of cattle ranching in Florida and how it
has changed through the years. It will be on display in the Museum Main
Gallery through August 9.

The Thomasville Cultural Center is pleased to organize and host this
year’s 20th
Annual Summer Showcase and Invitational. Spearheaded by the Thomasville Arts
Guild with a purpose of providing area artists an opportunity to showcase
their work, the first Summer Showcase Exhibition opened on the first Sunday
of June, 1990. Through the years it has been a vibrant exhibition featuring
the excellent work of our regional artists. Since its inception, the Summer
Showcase has become a well-known regional exhibition. The Showcase, this
year including works by over 50 regional artists, will be available for
viewing until August 15, Tuesdays through Fridays, from 9 am to 5 pm and
Saturdays, from 1 to 5 pm. All artwork on display will be for sale. (Call
Rachael at 229.226.0588 to schedule a tour for your club, group of friends,
or students.) The Showcase Invitational, exhibited in conjunction with the
Summer Showcase, features an artist who has either won awards in the
previous Showcases or been accepted in the Showcase on a consistent basis.
This year’s Invitational Artist is Bill McKeown, a fifth generation North
Floridian, who reflects his love and respect for the area and its people
through his paintings. Since retiring from a career in state government,
Bill has studied under numerous regional and national instructors, including
Joe McFadden, Suzanna Winton, Don Taylor and Eluster Richardson. His works
have been exhibited and won awards in juried shows in Florida and Georgia,
including the Southern Watercolor Society Exhibition, Quincy, Florida;
Riverside Artsfest, Bainbridge, Georgia; and, of course, the Summer Showcase
here at the Thomasville Cultural Center. Bill has titled his show Around and
About, reflecting local nature of his subjects and his appreciation for his
environment and community. The Thomasville Cultural Center is open Tuesday
through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and select Saturdays from 1 pm to 5 pm. The
Center offers a variety of art exhibitions, music, drama and dance
performances as well as classes, workshops and camps in the visual and
performing arts. Visit the Center on the internet at www.

The Council on Culture & Arts (COCA) is the local arts agency for
Tallahassee and Leon County, working on behalf of the community to support
the area's diverse range of cultural events and traditions to enrich the
lives of citizens and visitors alike. Through its services, programs and
publications, COCA continually seeks ways to promote the area's diverse
range of cultural events and traditions. Through innovative partnerships
with community and educational groups, COCA seeks to enrich and improve the
lives of citizens and visitors alike. One such popular program is COCA's
First Friday Gallery Hop. Held every first Friday of the month, the Gallery
Hop features over 20 galleries and museums welcoming visitors, many with
brand new exhibits and entertainment. The gallery hop begins - for those who
want the luxury of being driven to the sites - on the north side of Kleman
Plaza in downtown Tallahassee at the COCA shuttle. Seating is limited, so
tickets for the three-hour shuttle tour of galleries and museums go on sale
outside 101 Restaurant and Lounge at 5:30 pm. With on-board entertainers to
make the journey and evening even more enjoyable, the COCA shuttles offers
an alternative to driving that many people prefer. The shuttle departs at
6:30pm and tickets are $5 per person. Parking is available in the Kleman
Plaza parking garage and at curbside meters throughout downtown. The Council
on Culture & Arts is the local arts agency for Tallahassee and Leon County,

cultural events and traditions to enrich the lives of citizens and visitors
alike. (For more information about First Fridays, go to

• TOWN Art Show 2009 in the City Hall Gallery is currently on exhibit.
People who live in our wonderful city may be used to seeing these artists as
they respond to emergencies, repair utility lines or process paperwork. But
the fact is, many City of Tallahassee employees and retirees are extremely
talented artists. This show proves it. TOWN refers to 'Tallahassee's Own,'
and this show recognizes the employee-artists who provide quality service to
our citizens each day (and retirees whose past work has contributed to the
City's excellent reputation) - then fill their non-working hours creating
real beauty. City Hall Art Gallery is also open to the public weekdays from
8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Railroad Square Art Park is no longer Tallahassee's best-kept art
secret. Today,
Railroad Square Art Park is home to the shops, studios and galleries of
nearly 50 local artists who create their works alongside the eclectic mix of
other tenants, including a rock-climbing gym, a belly dance studio, a yoga
studio, a karate school, a community theatre, a Buddhist center, and a cafe
uniquely housed in a real railroad caboose. When "circling The Square" you
will find a myriad of brightly painted metal warehouses that quietly hold
secret treasures within. But, go on a First Friday Gallery Hop evening, and
you will see many of those secret treasures on display. The warehouse spaces
open and the Park is vibrant with 1,000 - 3,000 art-seeking patrons of all
walks of life. The gallery hop on the first Friday of each month is the best
opportunity to be introduced to the exciting and rich diversity of art
within the Park. Visitors can meet the artists and gallery owners, pick up a
business card or brochure, buy some art, or make appointments for future
visits. They also host other family friendly events throughout the year,
such as Second Sundays, when they have planned themed events. Renting nearly
100,000 square feet of commercial space, Railroad Square Art Park boasts
more artists-per-capita than any other spot in Florida. In the center of
Tallahassee, Railroad Square Art Park is within ten-minutes walking distance
of both Florida A&M (FAMU) and Florida State University (FSU), and Florida's
State Capitol Buildings are just one mile away. Railroad Avenue, the road on
which one enters the Park, is a business artery between the two universities
and home to the historic Amtrak train station. Railroad Square also borders
the exciting Gaines Street corridor redevelopment project. Railroad Square
Art Park is a place where students and working artists coexist, where the
community has the opportunity to experience culture and art-making
first-hand, and where anyone looking for relaxing and enjoyable
entertainment in Tallahassee will want to come back again and again. For
more info, visit www.railroadsquare.com/index.html.

Local musician, Bob White, had a great idea to help other musicians - not
only those already in the area, but any new ones coming here. He has started
a free service - a TALLAHASSEE MUSICIANS DIRECTORY. The purpose for the
directory is to make it easier for musicians to hook up with other musicians
- those musicians who are looking to form a new band or get into an existing
band. Or, to find a replacement for a fellow musician who may have gotten
sick at the last moment and is unable to make a gig. To be included in the
directory, please send the following info to Bob at rwhite8544@...:
your name, contact info, instrument(s) that you play, type of music you
prefer, name of bands you currently working with, if you do freelancing,
etc. Bass and guitar players should note if you play acoustic or electric
and if you double on both. You might also want to include any expertise and
experience - specialties or areas of emphasis and describe the types of
performances and events to be considered for, as well as any restrictions
(such as "no weddings"). (He has added a section for songwriters, arrangers
and composers, too.) Contact Bob if you would like to request a copy of the
updated directory.

Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park - Summer is in full swing and lots of
people are getting relief from the heat with a dip in Lake Hall. The park's
picnic and recreation area is a great spot for a cookout anytime, and may be
a most welcome treat on a weekday after work. Weekends fill up fast, so go
early!
Park staff members have planned a lot of fun activities for June and
July, Florida State Parks Month. Be sure to check the events link to see all
that they have coming up. Don't forget to enjoy the other areas of the park
too. The Gardens offer lots of cool green foliage with spots of color
throughout, and a breeze can usually be found at the Lakeside Pavilion. The
Lake Overstreet trails offer miles of trails to walk, bike or ride your
horse. The beautiful ornamental gardens were first planted in 1923 by Alfred
B. and Louise Maclay after they purchased the property for their winter
home. A masterpiece of floral architecture, the gardens feature a
picturesque brick walkway, a secret garden, a reflection pool, a walled
garden, and hundreds of azaleas and camellias. Lake Hall provides
opportunities for swimming, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Only boats
without motors or with electric motors are allowed. Pavilions and grills
along the lake shore provide the perfect setting for a picnic. For walking
enthusiasts, two short nature trails meander through the woods overlooking
the lake. Hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians can enjoy five miles of
multi-use trails winding through the woods surrounding Lake Overstreet,
located on park property adjoining the gardens. High blooming season is from
January 1-April 30 with the floral peak in mid-to-late March. During these
months, the Maclay house is usually open daily, from 9:00am-5:00pm. The park
is located at 3540 Thomasville Road, one-half mile north of I-10 on U.S.
319. Admission fees are: Garden Entry during Blooming Months: $4 per person
for adults and $2 per person for children (ages 2 to 12), January through

Wakulla Springs is one of the world's largest and deepest freshwater
springs! The colossal spring system is located in the Florida Panhandle just
14 miles south of Tallahassee. On average, more than 250 million gallons of
water flow from Wakulla Spring every day - forming a nine-mile river that
reaches the Gulf of Mexico. Wakulla Spring draws its water from a springshed
covering hundreds of square miles from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to
Georgia. While Wakulla Springs has attracted Florida residents to its deep
basin for thousands of years, recent changes in land use in the springshed
are having an impact on this gentle giant's health. Take a tour of Wakulla
Spring in a special, in-depth "Interactive Spring Feature" at
http://www.floridasprings.org/exploration/featured/wakulla. Learn about the
history, people and geology that define this amazing spring system located
within the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park. The park plays host to an
abundance of wildlife, including alligators, turtles, deer and birds. It
offers swimming, glass bottom boats, guided river tours, bird watching,
nature trails, snorkeling, interpretive exhibits, a historic lodge with
dining, guest rooms, conference rooms and a gift shop, picnicking,
concessions, horse trails and more. For more info about the park and the
year-round activities provided, call 850-224-5950, send an e-mail to

If you are interested in introducing yourself to the outdoors (and getting
some exercise along the way), check out the Apalachee Chapter of the Florida
Trail Association (FTA). They are based in and around the Tallahassee
region, where you'll find some of the finest hiking in all of Florida. These
are the county areas covered: Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty
and Wakulla. Members of the Apalachee Chapter who are Florida Trail activity
leaders lead regularly scheduled walks, hikes, paddling trips, work trips,
and other outdoor activities throughout the year. Those interested in an
activity should contact the listed leader at least a full day prior to the
event. Dress appropriately for our unpredictable weather and the woods -
wearing layers and hiking footwear is recommended. Always take water, and
possibly snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray. Most activities continue as
scheduled, even if the weather is less than ideal. An adult chaperon must
accompany children. Some activities are open to the public. Also, chapter
meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 7-9pm in Building
F, Suite 100 (U.S. Forest Service), at Woodcrest Office Park, 325 John Knox
Road. (It is the first building on the right as you enter Woodcrest. The
meeting room is ground level at the east end of Building F. Look for the
Florida Trail signs at wooden door.) For more information, contact Richard
Graham at 850-878-3616 or Linda Patton at 850-668-4334. Meetings are open to
the public. Check out the web site at http://apalachee.floridatra

Torreya State Park - The park has 13,217 acres of the most diverse property
in Florida. High bluffs overlooking the Apalachicola River make Torreya one
of Florida's most scenic places. (The bluffs are sometimes called the
"Mountains of Florida.") The park is named for an extremely rare species of
Torreya tree that only grows on the bluffs along the Apalachicola River.
Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, Torreya is
popular for camping, hiking, and picnicking. Bird-watching is also a popular
activity. Over 100 species of birds have been spotted in the park. Forests
of hardwood trees provide the finest display of fall color found in Florida.
The main campground offers full-facility campsites and a YURT (Year-round
Universal Recreational Tent). Primitive campsites and a youth campground are
also available. Ranger-guided tours of the Gregory House, a fully furnished
plantation home built in 1849, are given at 10am on weekdays and 10am, 2pm.,
and 4pm on weekends and state holidays. The park is located west on County
Road 1641 off State Road 12, 13 miles north of Bristol. For Information

VOLUNTEER & SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
*
*
*Volunteers needed for Bufterfly Festival at Birtdsong Nature Center - The
first Butterfly Festival took place in 2006, the brainchild of their
Naturalist, Chris Bittle. With Chris as champion of this event, it has grown
in attendance from around 100 people in ’06 to over 400 in ’08. In spite of
the high temperatures, guests always appear to be relaxed and enjoying
themselves. No one has ever complained about the heat! Another interesting
aspect of the Butterfly Festival is that consistently over 90% of attendees
are first-time visitors, not members. Birtdsong Nature Center needs your
help to again make the Butterfly Festival a very special event for new
visitors, so that they too may want to join and participate throughout the
coming year. There are many ways that you can help: Join them Thursday July
9, at 9:30 a.m. to help beautify the Butterfly Garden; go in advance on
Friday, July 17, and help do the heavy lifting: setting up tents, moving
tables and chairs, prepping the house for slide presentations, etc; deliver
flyers around your community and visit places of business to request
sponsorships and door prize gifts; invite your friends who have not been
there before and introduce them personally to Birdsong - the Butterfly
Garden is amazing! Volunteer for a 2-hour shift between 8 and 3 and help
welcome and orient guests; help at the Bird Window, Butterfly Garden, Gift
Shop, or membership table; assist with parking and traffic control; assist
with children’s activities; serve food and drinks. Bake cookies, etc. for
the bake sale booth. Help with cleanup afterward. Please call 229-377- 4408
or 800-953-BIRD(2473) to sign up or for more information. Birdsong would
really appreciate having your energy, ideas, and enthusiasm to make the 2009
Butterfly Festival the best one yet!

Wildlife Rescue - If you find sick, injured or orphaned wildlife , call St.
Francis Wildlife at 850-627-4151 or take it (day or night) to the
Northwood Animal
Hospital, 1881 N. Martin Luther King Blvd (just north of the Post Office).
Transport wildlife in a warm, dark box with holes punched in the lid. Keep
it quiet and handle it as little as possible. Do NOT give it food or water.
NEVER handle raccoons, foxes, bats or any mammals (even babies) that could
carry rabies. (Florida's squirrels, opossums and rabbits are not known to
carry rabies.) When calling to report an animal injured on a road, note
exactly where it is (Example: "1.4 miles west of exit 27 on the north side
of I-10") and, if possible, leave a marker, like a towel tied to a tree
limb. The St. Francis Wildlife Association, Inc. is a local, non-profit

Wildlife has written an informative guide "How to Help Wild Babies"(and
other animals) that you can download and keep handy. Visit the St. Francis'
website (www.stfranciswildlife.org) for her guide as well as their

I'm having trouble with fonts now. If it's not one thing with google, it's
another. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Have a happy and safe 4th!

Regards,
Iris

P.S. If you know anyone who would like to be included in my (mostly) weekly
"Out & ABOUT" updates, I will be glad to add them to my (unpublished) e-mail
list. Likewise, please let me know if you want to be removed from the list.

P.S.S. For requests to post info - EVENTS OR ENTERTAINMENT - PLEASE SEND THE
DETAILS AND CONTACT INFO IN PLENTY OF TIME TO imelton07@.... (I might
miss it if you send it to my other addresses.) Make sure to include the name
of the event; when and where it will be held; the cost of admission, if any;
contact info, and any other details you would like to share. (It would also
be helpful if you send the info in an easy to copy and paste format similar
to mine.) Also, send me a NEW message - don't reply to an old "OUT &
ABOUT." (Gmail
wraps e-mails together for a particular subject and yours could get lost in
those e-mail groups/misplaced, too. I USUALLY TRY TO SEND MY E-MAILS OUT BY
THURSDAY OF EACH WEEK.

P.S.S.S. If you are looking for more to do, pick up the "Limelight" in
Friday's edition of the Tallahassee Democrat or check out their web site at
http://www.tallahassee.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=ENT. Or visit
these sites for events/ calendars / to get on a mailing list for events for
