Sehwé Percussion Choir (formerly T.H.E. Percussion Choir) is a
community group playing and performing West African rhythms and
songs. The group recently moved to Tessitura Studio in the Oakhurst
Village of Decatur. Sehwé is composed entirely of volunteers and is
open to everyone, including beginner drummers and non-drummers alike.
The only requirement is that you be interested in learning, playing,
singing and occasionally performing West African music. Dancers are
also invited and dancing is always encouraged!
The group meets every Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. On the 1st and
3rd Thursdays of the month, the group is led by Aly Camara, master
drummer from Guinea, West Africa, and the cost is $15. Your first
class with Aly is free! The remaining Thursdays are devoted to
reviewing previous material, rehearsing for upcoming performances and
experimenting with the addition of other traditional and non-
traditional instruments. A $3 donation is requested on these nights
to help pay the rent. We also have loaner instruments to use free of
charge.
