"On this International Day of Peace,
let us dare to imagine a world free of conflict and violence.
And let us seize the opportunity for peace to take hold,
day by day, year by year, until every day is a day of peace."
- Kofi Annan (UN Press Release for Sept. 11, 2K1; ironically)
"What a waste it is to lose one's mind.
Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful.
How true that is."
- Former US Vice President Dan Quayle, 5/9/89
"There ought to be limits to freedom."
George W. Bush (May 21, 1999)
"Power corrupts. Absolute power is kind of neat."
- John Lehman (US Secretary of the Navy)
"Those who get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end."
-?
From the Abyss, The (film)
Bud "Virgil" Brigman (Ed Harris): Hippy, you think everything is a conspiracy.
Alan "Hippy" Carnes (Todd Graff): Everything is.
"Real revolutionaries adorn themselves on the inside,
not at the surface."
- Che Guevara
"Do not worry over the charge of treason to your masters,
but be concerned about the treason that involves yourselves.
Be true to yourself and you cannot be a traitor to any good cause on earth."
(Under the threat of a jail term in Canton, Ohio, in 1918.)
-Eugene Debs
"To criticize one's country is to do it a service and pay it a compliment.
It is a service because it may spur the country to do better than it is
doing; it is a compliment because it evidences a belief that a country can
do better than it is doing. In a democracy dissent is an act of faith. Like
medicine, the test of its value is not in its taste but its effect, not how
it makes people feel in the moment but how it makes them feel in the long
run. Criticism, in short, is more than a right; it is an act of patriotism,
a higher form of patriotism, I believe, than the familiar rituals of
national adulation."
(The Arrogance of Power, 1966)
Senator J. William Fulbright, Democrat (1905-1995)
"Mankind's history has proved from one era to another
that the true criterion of leadership is spiritual.
[People] are attracted by spirit.
By power, [people] are forced.
Love is engendered by spirit.
By power, anxieties are created.
(The Autobiography of Malcolm X, 1965, Chap. 19/ p. 424.)
-Malcolm X
"When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and
love has always won. There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time
they can seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Think of it,
always."
-(Mahatma) Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948 Hindu Indian nationalist
leader)
"I vow to cultivate peace by refraining from acts of violence (both verbal
and physical), doing whatever I can to protect others from violence, and
working with others to end violence in society as a whole."
- Rami M. Shapiro in Minyan
"The marvelous vision of the peaceable Kingdom, in which all violence has
been overcome and all men, women, and children live in loving unity with
nature, calls for its realization in our day-to-day lives. Instead of being
an escapist dream, it challenges us to anticipate what it promises. Every
time we forgive our neighbor, every time we make a child smile, every time
we show compassion to a suffering person, every time we arrange a bouquet
of flowers, offer care to tame or wild animals, prevent pollution, create
beauty in our homes and gardens, and work for peace and justice among
peoples and nations we are making the vision come true."
- Henri J. M. Nouwen in Bread for the Journey
"Listen to your music, and do what you know you have to do to feel whole, to
feel complete, and to feel you're fulfilling your destiny. You'll never be
at peace if you don't get that music out and let it play. Let the world
know why you're here, and do it with passion....."
- Dr. Wayne Dyer
