Come and enjoy an intensive week of West African traditional
drumming and dance in McCormick, South Carolina. This year's
Institute will take place at Hickory Knob State Park and Convention
Center, a beautiful retreat in the Savannah Lakes region of South
Carolina's National Historic Heritage Corridor. The Institute
instructors include a highly talented and proficient group of Master
Artists from the countries of Guinea and Mali, West Africa.

There will be two dining options for Institute participants. Hickory
Knob State Park has an on site restaurant which offers Southern
cuisine. Vegetarian alternatives will be provided by Mountain Mama
Catering. Cabins are furnished with full kitchens including pots,
pans and utensils for participants who wish to prepare their own
meals.

The Institute Instructors
Fode Moussa Camara
Fode Camara began his drum training at the age of five under master
drummer Atouabou Camara. Fode soon rose to featured artist status and
became a soloist for Gbassikolo Ballet and the Musical Director of
Fatouabou Percussion Ensemble and Fareta of Guinee. He was recruited
in 1998 by the national Circus of Guinea to serve as its musical
director. Fode Camara performed in the production of "Mandinka Epic"
with Afrique Noire in 2000 during a 32-city world tour.

Mohamed DaCosta
Originally from Boke, Guinea, Mr. DaCosta performed with Ballet
Djoliba, The National Ballet of the Gambia, Troupes Batafon, Sacred
Forest, and African Ballet. He is widely known for his performance
work in Europe, West Africa and the Americas over the last 20 years.
Mohamed DaCosta is an instructor of West African Traditional Arts at
The University of Florida, Gainesville.

Moustapha Bangoura
Moustapha Bangoura hails from the Nation of Guinea, West Africa. He
is a 22-year veteran of Les Ballets Africains with acclaimed
performances in over 165 capitals worldwide. In addition to extensive
international touring with the company, Moustapha has conducted music
and dance residencies and master classes throughout Africa, Europe,
Australia, South America and the US.

Yamoussa Soumah
Master dancer Yamoussa Soumah, a native of Guinea, West Africa, is
the Assistant Director/Choreographer of two of the country's national
dance companies: Les Ballet Africains and Ballet Djoliba. Yamoussa
has traveled throughout the world teaching and performing the dances
of Guinea. Yamoussa Soumah is in demand as a musician, dancer,
lecturer and choreographer. He currently teaches African Dance in
Atlanta, Georgia.

Mohamed Joh Camara
Sidi Mohamed Camara, popularly known as "Joh," was born in Bamako,
Mali. Surrounded by great artists and musicians as a child, Joh
started traditional dance and drumming at the age of five. He has
toured West Africa and presented hundreds of programs with his award
winning dance companies: Troupe Sewa, Troupe Mande, Troupe du
District de Bamako and Percussion Fabla. As chief choreographer of
Troupe Mande and Troupe Sewa, Joh has been instrumental in
contributing to the success of these two renowned ensembles.

Madou Dembele
Madou Dembele began drumming at age 4 and believes that his
grandfather's spirit guided him as he learned music. He studied with
experienced drum masters and paid close attention to their wisdom and
knowledge of traditions. Dembele says, "To really play well, you must
be close to the old people and respect them, and they will give you
the power to play." Madou's performances have thrilled audiences at
the Kennedy Center and the Guggenheim. He has performed with Stevie
Wonder and Blue Man Group, recorded with Herbie Hancock, toured with
Ziggy Marley, and was a featured performer for six months at Disney
World.

Aly "Mindra" Camara
Aly Camara was born and raised in Conakry, Guinea. He received his
formal instruction from Yamoussa "Yahdi" Camara , Aboubacar Fatou
Abou Camara and Mohamed Kemoko Sano. Aly began drumming
professionally at the age of 11 with Solei D'Afrique and has since
performed with and provided musical direction for Les Merveilles de
Guinea, Fareta de Guinea, Konkoure Bamba, and Fatala. Aly has
performed at Symphony Space on Broadway in New York City, at the
National Black Arts Festival, the New York State Fair, and for many
other conferences, workshops and festivals throughout the USA, Africa
and Europe.
