It's time to celebrate and prepare for the third Camaraya practicum and
performance!

This year's event will be September 17-20, 2009 again at Camp Coleman in north
Georgia. This year we are adding the phenomenal griot and dancer Ismael
"Bonfils" Kouyate and premier balafonist Abou Sylla along with Aly Camara,
Mamady Sano, Marietou Cisse, Ismael Bangoura and Ibrahima "Kolipe" Camara.

This is a truly special and amazing event. We convene on Thursday evening,
rehearse together for 2.5 days and then perform an incredible show for the
public on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.

The full camp fee includes three nights lodging, all meals, an African barbecue,
a camp t-shirt and participation in the performance.

At Camaraya, we create the environment so that you can focus all of your energy
on performing this amazing traditional art (though if you don't want to perform,
that's ok too). More details can be found at
www.africanperformingarts.org/gpage2.html and the flyer can be downloaded
directly from http://76.163.252.51:8080/Camaraya2009.pdf

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'm happy to support split
payments if that will help anyone - for example, a $75 deposit, then pay $75 in
July, $75 in August and the remainder when you come to camp.

Please contact me if you have any questions!

Hello all,

The details for the Congolese Dance & Drum Festival are below.  Please pass
this information on to as many as you can and encourage them to come out and
join us.  There is a new look to the conference, as it will also display the
influence of the Congo in some of the Diaspora such as Cuba, Brasil, and
Haiti!  Definitely, an event not to be missed…For anyone that dances styles
of the Diaspora, yet not Congolese, this festival is a way to experience both so
that you see the connection.  Hope to see you there!

Hi all!
Don't forget that we have dundun class tonight with Mangue Sylla from Merveilles
d'Afrique. Mangue is one of the best dundun players you will find in the U.S. He
teaches drumming in NYC, including at Columbia University. His English is great,
and he is a solid guy who has not been to Atlanta in a long time, so come and
enjoy!

7pm
Decatur-DeKalb YMCA

In the large aerobics room. If you need to rent a dundun, please call Aly at

Thanks!

All,

We will have djembe drum class with Mamadouba Mito Camara of Ballets Africains
and friends at the Decatur-DeKalb YMCA 1100 Clairemont Ave. on Saturday 4/11 at
1pm. We will be in the large classroom.

We will also have dundun class with Mangue Sylla, dundun player extraordinaire,
on 4/17 at 7:30 pm, also at the YMCA.

Classes are $15 each.

Don't forget - no dance class on 4/15 - come dance to our music at the Braves
game instead!!! (i think that will get us lots of brownie points if the crowd is
actually dancing with us!) A $6 Braves ticket is cheaper than dance class!!!!

Hi all,
We are halfway thru our series with Mamady. Don't forget there are 3 more
classes this week, same times and location as last week, except on Friday we are
going to try to start at 7:15p instead of 7:30p since the Y closes at 9, that
will give us time to wrap up at 8:45p.

Tuesday 7:30 pm at 575 Boulevard SE Community Center
Wednesday 7:00 pm at the Decatur DeKalb YMCA 1100 Clairemont Ave., Decatur
Friday 7:15pm at the Decatur DeKalb YMCA 1100 Clairemont Ave., Decatur

$12 per class

Also, we are planning to schedule a drum class with Mito Camara from Les Ballets
Africains on Saturday the 11th around noon or 1pm as soon as i finalize the
location. Please let me know if you are interested.

BRAVES GAME APRIL 15
Aly and Marietou will be performing on the 15th at the Braves game with Aly's
students from the Sehwe Village Percussion Ensemble. There will be no class on
Wed the 15th, but as a side benefit, we get to give a discount on ticket prices
to all of our friends, and we would like to encourage all of you to come show
your support.

You can get a ticket as low as $6(!) at www.braves.com/banddiscount and they
actually have a competition of all the bands that appear for the year based on
crowd response, so please come show your love!!!

All,
Do you know anyone who knows church songs, and if they knew African
drum or dance too, that would be a big plus? We have some gigs next
month to play for some religions events.

Here's the songs we need (or some sampling thereof):
How Great Thou Art
How Great is Thy Faithfulness
What God has done for me
All to Jesus I surrender
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
This is the day
Just as I am
Amazing Grace
Jesus Never Fail

Hi all,
Many of you are aware that we have held Camp Camaraya the past two
years. It is a unique camp held in North Georgia where participants
get together with master artists to create a performance held on the
last day of camp.

It has been great fun, but I would like to get some input to help me
determine how to make it better and more appealing, and to determine
whether I should try to hold it again this year, or due to the
economy if maybe I should skip a year.

Please tell me what you think, and if you have any other suggestions
about programs related to African drum and dance that you would like
to see, please feel free to add them in anywhere that you can submit
a comment.
