All,
Camaraya Drum & Dance Practicum is held in North Georgia 9/25-9/28 and
all participants prepare for a performance on Sunday at 2pm in downtown
Atlanta.
If you are thinking about coming to Camaraya, please let me know. You
will be immersed in West African culture - food, people, rhythm and
movement for four days. There is nothing else like it in the US.
I'm working on costumes, so I need to know your size now. For clips of
last year's performance and all the details about the camp, see
www.africanperformingarts.org/gpage2.html
Send me an email or call me at 404/909-3036 for more info!
Sharon
Hi all!
Hopefully you have all been thinking about coming to Camaraya, and if
you haven't sent in your registration yet, the early registration is
coming up on 8/31.
Camaraya is a drum and dance practicum from 9/25-9/28 in North Georgia.
It starts on Thursday afternoon, 9/25 and participants learn drum and
dance pieces for a performance through 9/28. Everyone will head to
Atlanta on the morning of 9/28 and perform at the theater at Grady High
School - right next to Piedmont Park at 2pm!
For more information see www.africanperformingarts.org/gpage2.html
See you there!
All,
We have use of Ebster Gym since the Y is not available tomorrow! So
class will be at 7pm at 404 W Trinity Place, Decatur, 30030. It is
about 1.5 blocks from Decatur Sq - trinity place is the one that runs
behind the courthouse, parallel to ponce. Ebster Gym is at the opposite
end of the building that the police station is in. $10
Sharon
All,
The time is now to pre-register for the Camaraya Drum & Dance
Practicum! If you have not drummed or danced in years, this would be
the perfect opportunity to jump back inwith both feet! Four days of
intensive rehearsals, great people, amazing artists and one
incredible performance starring all of us and... YOU at the end!
And if you've been drumming and dancing all along, come join us to
what has been called the closest you can get to a Guinea learning
experience in America!
Begin Thursday afternoon at beautiful Camp Coleman, 1.5 hrs north of
Atlanta, GA, we will start with a dance class and all drummers will
drum, then an opening meeting, dinner and the choreography and
arrangements begin. We will rehearse through Saturday evening, at
which point we will enjoy a sumptuous African barbecue featuring
fresh goat and lots of veggies. We will have at least one additional
African dinner on Thurs or Friday night.
Wake up Sunday morning and we all head to Atlanta for dress rehearsal
and a public performance of what we have rehearsed in downtown
Atlanta! You will surprise yourself with what you can accomplish in
such a short time!!! And everything you've learned is yours to take
home and perform with your own group - plus the t-shirt. And the
graphic for this year's t-shirt is slick, maybe worth the cost of
camp and a vacation in itself!!
So, gas prices are high, all the more incentive to carpool your way
to Atlanta. This was a fantastic experience last year, and it is
going to be logaRHYTHMically better this year! Same great location,
same wonderful instructors, better food and a performance in Atlanta!
For more info and to register, go to
http://www.africanperformingarts.org/gpage2.html. You can print out
the registration form and mail it in with a check, or you can pay via
paypal and fill out the online form, or fill out the online form and
mail a check, whatever works. The form was not working up until
today, so if you tried it previously, please try again!
EVERYONE IS WELCOME - no matter your age, gender, race, skill level,
we will make it beautiful!
If you are interested in coming, please send in a registration form
with a $50 deposit at your earliest convenience, and you can pay $115
by 9/1 and the remaining by the time you come to camp.

take the survey I've created (that's the "field" part of the "field
research"). It will just take a few minutes.
I just have a week to collect the responses, so if you can spare a few
minutes to check it out, please do! Here is the link:

I'm writing to invite you to the New Orleans Dance Festival -
http://nodancefestival.org - my college ensemble is going, all the
way from New England, and we're really excited not only because of
the program, but because the festival folks are connecting the
artists with many New Orleans community groups that are still trying
to recover from Katrina.
So in addition to rhythm and dance with amazing artists, there is an
active benefit for the community. If you're interested in going and
need financial assistance, please feel free to contact the
organizer, who has some available. It's worth it! Hope to see you
there.

Alamuta World Music and Dance Conference
Live.Breathe.Culture.
KaraKahlil Productions will hold their first Music and Dance Conference,
Alamuta World Music and Dance Conference 2008, here in Los Angeles, CA
this Summer, July 11-August 3, 2008. This conference's focus is to
educate the youth and reeducate the old, through the art of music and
dance from the African Diaspora, featuring Master artists from Guinea,
Congo, Senegal, Mali, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, and Africa-America. I am
contacting you because our goal is to make this a momentous annual event
that both the young and mature will be able to look forward to, and
you're vital to that happening. Los Angeles is in the process of
growing more and more in creating outlets and opportunities centralized
on the African-American youth, but because of the lack of media coverage
and promotion, the African-American youth are still left with
nothing...we want to change that!
As you know, the media from generation to generation has bombarded our
heads with images that are not our own. The African-American youth do
not know that most of the dances and music we see and do here in America
stem from the Motherland herself nor do they know that North America was
not the only continent used in the slave trade. Though it is a painful
history, we have African people today speaking English, French, Spanish,
and Portuguese; making their own cultures, so what better way to
celebrate that than through music and dance!
We know that we cannot do this on our own and it is only through help
and support that we can get "Alamuta 2008" manifested in its full
potential. We are accepting any and all donations, great and small,
monetary or just an opportunity to advertise, and it will surely be put
into good use. If you need anymore information, please either email
karakahlilprod@ yahoo.com <http://yahoo.com/> or call 310-429-7487.

All,
Our Drum & Dance Practicum last September was amazing! We created a
phenomenal performance in just 2 days of rehearsals! This year we are
taking our success from last year and making it even better.
Camp Camaraya is September 25-28, 2008 at Camp Coleman, approximately
1.5 hours north of Atlanta. The purpose of the event is to bring
together passionate students of West African drum and dance of all
levels and create a public performance to be offered in downtown
Atlanta on Sunday, September 28.
This event is for you if you have always wanted to perform, if you
already perform in a group and want some new pieces, if want to learn
more (and if you are too shy, you don't have to perform!), if you
want to learn directly from some of the best artists from Guinea,
West Africa, if you want to have a fun, intense experience for 3.5
days and the gratification of creating an incredible event.
Artists:

Youssouf Koumbassa Aly Camara
Mamady Sano Fode Bangoura
Marietou Cisse Ismael Bangoura

All,
We had a great class on Wed. I know that sometimes people don't
take classes taught by Africans because they are afraid it will be
too hard or too fast, but this class seemed to be for baby bear,
because i received feedback from several folks that it was JUST
RIGHT.
So, we will not have class on 4/9, and the next class will be Wed.
4/16. If you have the slightest inclination, you should come check
it out. It is a very relaxed, welcoming environment and all ages,
genders, races, political affiliations, etc. are welcome!
The classes are at the Horizons School, 1900 DeKalb Ave.,
Atlanta/Decatur 30307. The driveway to the school ends on
Southerland Ter where it intersects with DeKalb Ave. Come up the
driveway and park in the roundabout or in front of the grey trailer
and the swimming pool. Walk behind the yellow bldg to the gym.
There's kind of a wooden arch that you walk through to the door,
when you open the door you are facing the theater door and a big
stone waterfall-y thing. Go left of the waterfall to the gym door.
Remember - Live drumming, great dance class, and just a $10
investment!

The second Camp Camaraya event will be held September 25-28, 2008.
This special drum & dance practicum begins on Thursday afternoon,
9/25 at Camp Coleman in Cleveland, GA with three days of intense
rehearsals and all participants are featured in a public performance
with the master artists on Sunday 9/28 in Atlanta, GA.
New for this year:
- instead of performing on Saturday night in north Georgia, the
performance will be a Sunday matinee in downtown Atlanta!
- by moving the performance time and starting a little earlier on
Thursday, we will be able to have more rehearsal time (at least 3
additional sessions)
- babysitting will be offered for a small fee
- we will have an additional campfire night
- we will have an African barbecue on Saturday night
- we will have an African meal at least one additional night
Stay tuned for more details, flyers and updated website information.
In the meantime, you can read about last year's event at:
