- I'm back from Florida and all is well. I want to send out a big thanks to Doug Wehmeyer from the Dustin Pittsley Band and Donn McCallister from Radio League Champions for filling in for me while I was gone. If you guy's ever need me don't hesitate to call.
- A good friend of mine Denise and her daughter Candace were moving to Ft. Myers and needed another driver to get their vehicles down there. We had a good time, on the way we stopped in Memphis(home of the blues) and checked out Beale Street and caught a set of some local down home blues. We also went to the Gibson Guitar Factory and made a stop by Graceland before we headed on east through the never-ending state they call Tennessee. We stopped again in Knoxville to get some needed sleep. The next day we drove almost all the way to the east coast before we started heading south, just to be sure we didn't run into any gas shortages from the Hurricane. Gas prices did get high at one point and we had to hit a couple of stations before we found gas but we made it ok. We did get a funny picture of me standing in front of the gas pump that read $3.45gal with a lighter and a hundred dollar bill. The drive over the Great Smokey Mountains of North and South Carolina was absolutely beautiful. Once we got to Georgia we had to make a stop at a convenience store just to hear a little of the local twang :-). We were pretty tired by this time but decided to grab some Rockstar energy drink and keep on truckin'. I tried my best to talk them into going down to Daytona Beach and staying for the night, so I could wake up and get my first glimpse of the ocean but, all my pleas were shot down. So our secondary plan was to stop in Jacksonville, get some rest and finish the drive the next day, but all the Rockstar energy drink I downed at the convenience store kicked in by then and I decided to go a little further before we stopped. We hit yet another gas station and some more Rockstar and decided just to go till we couldn't go any further. By the time I had enough, we were too close, It would have been ridiculous to stop so close to our destination. So we just pushed on. Man, I must have drove that big ass u-haul about 18 hours straight. My arm was numb for three days from gripping the steering wheel. That was one hell of a road trip and I still hadn't seen the ocean, so after some well deserved sleep, first thing I did was make my way to the beach, It was raining and almost dark but I didn't care. I finally made it, and it was therapeutic to say the least, I was mesmerized by the white sand, palm trees and the clear-green water! One word, paradise! The next day we jumped in the convertible and headed east to Ft. Lauderdale to take a swim in the Atlantic, this was my first time to see a real ocean(not just the Gulf). It was an awesome day(thanks Candace) but I must say, from what I saw, the gulf side of Florida is actually prettier than the Atlantic side. This was really surprising to me, I never expected such a beautiful place, having seen the Gulf in Galveston Texas(It was nasty).
- A few days later we hooked up with some friends on Estero Island and took an adventurous boat ride through a storm to Sanibel island(I'm going to laugh next time someone in Oklahoma say's they can't get the boat out, cause the water is too choppy..... Pbbbbbbbpt....... Whatever!!!) After the storm passed we did a little snorkeling(well, sort of, I didn't actually have a snorkel) This is where I had what I refer to as my "Finding Nemo Moment". I saw thousands of little fish swimming hastily all around me(quill perhaps?:) The problem is that they appeared to be running from something! My fear of the unknown soon got the best of me, so my snorkeling adventure was short lived. By the way, salt water does make you more buoyant, had I been any lighter I could have walked on water. Tell me that wouldn't have freaked some people out :)>
- I definitely got to experience a lot of firsts on this trip, like going to Lovers Key and walking on miles of white beach made of sea shells, seeing an alligator in the wild(that'll make your knees buckle!), getting introduced to some Brazilian food and culture and a diverse range of music, from Samba, Reggae-tone Some Funky zydeco from the band Zydefunk(with one of the best bass players I have ever seen, "Mr Charlie Wooten)". One of my favorite memories is sitting in-between Sanibel and Captiva islands Listening to Mr. Bungle's "California" Cd while seeing the sun set and hearing the big crystal clear waves crashing into the rocks I was sitting on. Ahh man, I wish I was there right now!
- The day before I left, I took a high speed Jet powered three story casino boat to Key West for a day. There's nothing like being out in the middle of the ocean in turquoise water with no land in sight! Wow! I thought all those pictures of baby blue / florescent green water were all doctored up, like the brochures for the lakes around here are, but it's for real!!! It's unexplainable how beautiful it is. I will have to send some pics out when I get them developed, although they probably wont do any justice to the real thing. Once I got there, I got scammed into renting an electric car for the day(I should have got a scooter instead), one good thing about the car though, it had a roof and I was thankful to be out of the sun cause my "glow in the dark" self was already crispy! I cruised around the whole Island in my cool little "overly expensive" hippie car. I went to the southernmost point of the Continental United States(90 miles from Cuba), cruised Duvall street and stopped at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville for a picture and saw a real live cross-dresser, I was staring so hard in disbelief he/she probably thought I was checking him/her out. Yuck! There seemed to be a lot of "butt pirates" on the island, butt hey, to each their own I guess(pun intended). :) I went to a peer on the Atlantic side and saw a dude spear gunning lobsters. I wish I hadn't ran out of film by then, because the peer was lined with huge boulders to break the waves and you could totally see how clear and deep the water was because of the rocks. I will forever have that image in my head. It was beautiful! The boat ride back was quite eventful too, we ran into some of the winds from that second hurricane and it caused some pretty big waves. The boat was equipped with wave piercing technology and electronic automatic trim control so we didn't slow down one bit. It was kind of crazy seeing these big huge waves coming and then seeing it just fold over when the boat hit it! I just knew we were going to go flying at any moment. Luckily, we made it back from our "3 hour tour" in one piece. I actually had to rip some of my hair out cause I had dreads from all the wind, but it was worth it.
- The next day I was completely tired and beat up from the boat ride and my first of four separate flights home left at 2pm, that was crazy but the price was right. I was a little apprehensive about flying anyway but the thought of four flights on two separate airlines made it even worse, then to top it all off I overhear someone talking about how an engine fell off of an Air Tran jet yesterday! I made a point to thank them as I noticed I was sitting right next to the engine! Dammit! I ended up flying pretty uneventfully from Ft. Myers, Florida to Atlanta, Georgia then from there to Indianapolis, Indiana where the next plane was running late due to weather delays. The next flight was scheduled to go to Cincinnati, Ohio but if it got in too late I was not going to make my next flight to Tulsa and since it was a weather delay Delta would not pay for the hotel room. Needless to say, I was a little stressed out. I would have had an option to fly back to Atlanta and then on to Tulsa but since I was switching to another airline I had to go track down my luggage and re-check it with Delta and the flight to Atlanta was leaving right then. I really thought I was going to have to spend the night in the airport watching Drew Carey and WKRP re-runs. :) By the time we finally landed in Cincinnati, the plane to Tulsa was already loaded and ready to go, I ran as fast as I could to the gate and the flight attendant was just about to give up on me and close the door, but I made it! Whew!!! The flight home was nice, knowing I was actually going to sleep in my own bed again. Plus, the Solo Club was having their 50th anniversary street party. It was about midnight before I actually made it to town and The Dustin Pittsley band was playing, they invited me up to play as soon as I got there. I was grateful cause I hadn't played in almost two weeks and It felt pretty good! After the street party shut down I went over to Snockers and finished out the night with Tuff Profit. I had been through so much in the last couple days, I remember thinking to myself how crazy it was that I was in Key West Florida yesterday and now I'm back on stage in Bartlesville. Very cool and definitely unforgettable. Thanks Denise for inviting me! I had a great time!!!
- Raintree is still trying to find a Bass player(preferably with vocal ability). If you know anyone who plays bass please send them our way!
