RE: [BBSBasses] Sudden Loss of lower range

Hi from the UK

I have been singing "Rock around the clock" and have to get to a low C. The
only way I can do this so as to be heard is to sing it very brightly/forward
using a sound like "have". I sing scales using the word "have" to warm up.

Most of you guys from the U.S. speak with a bright sound and we in the UK
are used to speaking with the sound further back. So our base section in
chorus can sound "brown" or "dull" or "old" unless we work at it. In
public places a bright speaking voice carries too well and modesty - not
standing out - seems to be regarded as a virtue here. If I use an American
voice to sing, my quartet tenor complains I sound too American and the most
he will accept is "mid atlantic"

Just to see how this group works and what Yahoo permits, I will send a
second email with an mp3 file attached. If users of the group can attach
such files it could give it a new dimension. I use a microphone and
recording software.

Last night, our chorus had an outdoor concert, in which my quartet sang
four numbers as well. We warmed up outdoors, then gave the performance
in a public park, with a decent sound system. All through the
performance, whether chorus or quartet, I had the feeling that my low
voice, with decent resonance, was just not there. Driving home,
checking with a pitch pipe, I found that I simply didn't have much
voice below a G, while I usually have a solid Eb, and usually vocalize
down to C. Thankfully, my voice seems to have returned to its normal
condition today.

I'm at a loss to explain the sudden loss of voice. Are there special
measures that singers should take when singing outdoors? I did the
usual drinking of lots of water ahead of time, etc.

PS- This bass list has been inactive for sometime now. I think it needs
to be reenergized.

OK, This is what I think..... When singing outdoors, (I'm a bass and a Bass section leader) the biggest problem basses have is the "low end" seems shallow out...

Further on what Duane said, I believe over hydration in a situation where you are straining the cords hastens the edema (swelling) in a basses cords. Though we...
