Dr. Don Loose of JAD has an excellent presentation (with illustrations &
props) on how the voice works.
To put it in a nutshell, our ancestors communicated with grunts and shouts
and cries of brief duration. Modern speech has longer sounds (vowels), and
singing requires MUCH longer duration exercise of the vocal apparatus.
The problem arises when the vocal cords (as distinct from chords -
hmmmm....) bump into each other. The collision creates heat. If we only do
it briefly, the heat doesn't build up appreciably. But sustained loud
speaking - or even worse, sustained loud singing vowels - creates enough
heat that the vocal cords are bruised & damaged by the abuse. (Carpet burn
of the vocal cords???)
The cure is to discover and maximize the natural resonances in the head
cavity, so that a maximum of sound is created with a minimum of abuse to the
vocal cords. This is pretty difficult to do by yourself - you need a trained
listener to give you good feedback.

> A good book to get and read is "Set Your Voice Free" by Roger Love. It
comes with a CD as well. In this book he proclaims that your voice is
designed to function fully for 24 hrs a day. If it doesn't, it's probably
because it's not being properly fed (Water) or properly used (Breath
support).
