Hi Basses:
Thought I'd chime in here.? Paul Mayo and I studied with the same man in L.A., I
understand.? Never saw him there, and we never talked, but I heard that he
studied with Joe Klein, as did I, in the 70's.? Joe was very much about
abdominal support, and the nerve signals that get sent up to the larynx when you
"lift" correctly.? I've been teaching his method for 30 years, so I'm biased
toward that way of singing.
What notes you sing don't matter much at the elemental technique level.? If you
get the support and the freedom of the jaw right, you're on the road to
happiness.? THEN you can do particular drills for the musical content and
improvement.
So I always recommend you get something that teaches you HOW to approach
singing, rather than just a bunch of notes.? Just MHO.? And I'm re-writing Joe's
book with my own additions.? May be out by Christmas.

I was fortunate to take Paul's (Advanced Vocal
Technique?) class at Harmony College (15 years
ago?), and I'm convinced that his methods work.
But I believe that how often we use them is
more important than the choice of exercises.
Daily vocalizing leads to rapid, significant results.
Less-frequent workouts mean slower change.
By "vocalizing," I mean sufficient, careful warm-up,
followed by intense singing for 20 or 30 minutes.
"Sufficient warm-up" depends on how much I've
already used my voice that day, and on how long it
takes to begin working smoothly. I need more in
the morning than after a day of using my voice.
"Careful" means: relax; practice good posture; sing
gently; avoid coughing, throat clearing, and energetic
attacks; be patient; and increase intensity gradually.
I've improved both stamina and resonance
(high/bright/sinus, medium/throat, and low/dark/chest).
As a result, my voice is richer/rounder, has more-
uniform timbre throughout my range, and produces
noticeably more sound without additional effort.
In a nutshell: vocalize often... daily if possible.
