The only requirement is the ability to play rhythm for the following chords: G, C, D, A. Instrumental soloing and fast playing are not required or expected. Campers learn to follow chord changes, pick out melodies, improvise solos, sing harmony, and follow the ground rules of bluegrass jamming in supervised small groups. Pete will be assisted by his wife, singer/guitarist Joan Wernick and multi-instrumentalist Ira Gitlin.
Pete Wernick taught his first weeklong bluegrass camp in 1980, and over 100 bluegrass and banjo camps since. He will perform in the bluegrass supergroup Hot Rize, as they, along with Red Knuckles & The Trailblazers, headline this year's Grey Fox Festival.
The jam camp in Oak Hill is part of a slate of camps across the country. Here are others:
March 28-30—Boulder, CO, at the Boulder Inn
April 11-13—Boulder, CO, Intermediate Jam Camp at the Boulder Inn
April 21-24—Boomer, NC, preceding Merlefest, includes new Intermediate Track
May 13-15—Gettysburg, PA, preceding the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival
June 3-5—Morehead, KY, preceding the Clack Mountain Festival
