CATACLYST: MONUMENTS OF A RUBICUND AGE, CD
(Tantric Harmonies)
A strange project that for a moment united Peter Andersson (raison
d'etre) and Johanna Rosenqvist (ex-Institut, Koeff) in the distant 1992.
Cataclyst's music combines the melancholic beauty of early raison d'etre
and Necrophorus, harsh industrial rhythms of Institut and
tribal-elements of another undeservingly forgotten project of Peter -
Svasti-Ayanam... What differs this product from other works of Swedish
industrial scene masters is the atmosphere of remote fairy worlds in
which you smoothly sink into while listening to "Monuments of a Rubicund
Age". Peter and Johanna have woven an infinite labyrinth of mirages,
walking through which will be a pleasant surprise for both the fans of
ambient / experimental / industrial and more conservative gothic lovers.
The first edition of the album was published by Peter's own label Yantra
Atmospheres in 1999 and was limited to 100 copies. This reissue has been
made by joint efforts of the labels Tantric Harmonies and Zhelezobeton,
it contains a shorter version of the album's last piece + bonus-track.
Original photographs are made by Pavel Bourchenko.

DEAD BEAT PROJECT: BREAKING THE SHELL, CD
(Aesthetic Death)
9 tracks featuring memorable shards of drifting industrial electronica,
filtering through a gush of amnesiac inducing ambience - running
parallel alongside Gallic rhythmic interjections.
A reminiscence to the glorious and majestic rhythms of In The Nursery,
Skinny Puppy, Biosphere, The Anti-Group Collaborative, Morthound…
“Breaking The Shell” is a paradox within which time stands motionless. A
visit to both the past and the future - the dark and the light - the
twisted and the sincere - the odorous and the beautiful..
Dark ambient neo-classical industrial electronica at its finest -
beautiful in its initial radiance, yet sinister within its obscure shadows.
A melancholic soundtrack for the erudite listener..

HANNA HARTMAN, CD

Having developed her very own language, the Swedish sound artist Hanna
Hartman creates compositions that are exclusively made up from authentic
sounds which she has recorded around the world. Sounds are taken out of
their original context and thus perceived in their purity.
Hanna Hartman seeks to reveal hidden correspondences between the most
diverse auditive impressions and in new constellations she creates
extraordinary worlds of sound.

HATI: MANTRA-I - PREHISTORY OF HATI: VOL. 1, CD-R
(Eter)
"Quite recently Polish Hati did a small tour together with z'ev. No
doubt Hati is one of those bands that use concerts to sell CDs and
perhaps for that reason they released these three CDRs. Hati is a drone
group who use a variety of instruments: animal horns, bamboo pipes,
steel jingle bells, wooden pipe, plastic tubes, cymbal, steel lids, wood
wind chimes, and much more and the outcome is both atmospheric and
occasionally rhythmic. On 'Mantra-I: Prehistory Of Hati: Vol. 1' we are
transported back to the past, to the very first sessions by Hati in
1997. Here they still use loops, guitar, effects, voice, found objects
and a drum machine. Especially the drum machine makes a big mark on the
music. It rambles on like there is no end. The entire sound spectrum is
smeared with sound effects. Very trance like, but for the weak of mind,
this can turn out to be a bad head trip. Sometimes a bit noisy, but such
as in 'Suntan 1' a nice cross-over between the old zoviet*france and the
more recent Troum." [Frans de Waard,VITAL WEEKLY, number 556]

HENRIK SUMMANEN: THE GREAT ATTRACTOR, CD-R
(Ahasverus)
Henrik Summanen keeps publishing music at an ever-increasing pace. And
as long as the quality is on this level, I have absolutely no complaints
about that. Just like the artist's other recent works, this too falls
somewhere on the gray area between electro-acoustic and drone-ambient.
With the use of small, wonderfully echoing structures Summanen creates
the feel of a cold, hall-like space. It is a soundscape in which every
piece seems immensely important and meaningful. The best example of this
effect is in the title track, which grows from small drops to a wide,
but not at all massive range of drones.
The more landscaping "Out of Orbit" is definitely less interesting, even
colder in feel and far more direct - but it's still a good track. "White
Hole" is again much stronger. It's clearly more spatial than the opening
track, making it sound like an echo in emptiness. A subdued alternation
between pauses and structures keeps it fascinating all the way. The
album's second gem is its final track, "Southern Wall", an oppressive
return to the elements used in the beginning. The tone is a bit warmer
this time, though, and the feel is of a slightly smaller space.
The Great Attractor consists of beautiful pieces at all times, yet the
sum is even more gorgeous. It is also far better and more impressive
than the previous work of this artist (the rather boring "Cave songs"
ep, 2006). I hope this won't be left as just a rare delicacy for a very
small audience.
An excellent album. [Jiituomas, Kuolleen Musiikin Yhdistys]

JENS HEDMAN / PAULINA SUNDIN: CURRENTS, CD
(Elektron Records)
CURRENTS (by Jens Hedman and Paulina Sundin) is a musical tribute to our
hometown, Stockholm, portraying the flows and streams in the city from
four different sound perspectives. The work also deals with the changing
seasons and different times of day. It was composed at EMS in Stockholm
and all the sound material was recorded in the city and its districts
using a Neumann kunstkopf microphone. The first two parts were composed
in 1996 and the remaining two in 1998. Each of the four sections can
also be played separately as short electroclips.
The first performance of Currents was at "Hey Listen", the international
sound conference for acoustic ecology arranged by the Swedish Royal
Academy of Music together with World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE)
and Stockholm European Capital of Culture 1998. Since then the piece has
been performed frequently at concerts and has also been used by other
artists, such as the Basle Dance Company, which added choreography to
the piece during ISCM World Music Days 2000 in Luxembourg. The architect
NN created a visual interpretation of Currents for Galleri NN during the
UNM Festival in Gothenburg in 1999. Currents is available in three
different versions: 2-channel, 8-channel and 12-channel. The 12-channel
version was specially made for the open-air pavilion, Elektrofonen,
created by Jens Hedman and Christian H–rgren.
Elektrofonen, which is mobile, has toured Sweden and could be seen,
among other places, at Stockholm Water Festival in 1999. The 8-channel
version has been performed at ACMC in Wellington, New Zealand and at the
Rien - Voir Festival in Canada in 1999.

RUNE LINDBLAD: DIE STILLE LIEBE, CD
(Elektron Records)
This lovingly curated double disc retrospective of previously unreleased
works by the Swedish electronic pioneer Rune Lindblad (1923-1991) is a
difficult listen, it must be said, but the jarring, ugly, tuneless music
captured here gives an interesting insight into the world of a man who
in some circles (fairly obscure ones admittedly) is lauded as one of the
true giants of twentieth century music. Lindblad, in his early years,
worked in isolation, seemingly unaware of the conflict between the
Cologne school of electronic music, championed by Stockhausen and
Koenig, and the Paris school of musique concrete, of which Henry and
Schaeffer were leading exponents. In 1956, prompted by a sudden
awareness of these workstreams, both of which could be compared to his
own compositions, Lindblad put on a concert of musique concrete in
Gothenburg, together with Bruno Epstein and Sven-Eric Johansson. The
sleeve notes to these discs tell the story. "This was the first concert
of its kind ever in Gothenburg, and caused a scandal. The audience got
angry and aggressive when they heard the experimental music and
afterwards demanded their money back. The concert was totally slated by
the press, one reporter describing it as pure torture". This about sums
it up actually. Some of the tracks presented here - 1973's
'Associationer', for instance - are pretty much unlistenable. This is
not to say that they are bad. In fact large parts of this appeal to me
very much indeed. The compositions are extreme, in the same way that
Karel Appel's "Questioning Children" is an extreme painting, or
Peckinpah's Straw Dogs is an extreme film. They are not there to be
enjoyed. They are there to be endured. And therein lies the
satisfaction. Anybody with the faintest interest in electronic music
should listen to these discs at least once, if only to put Lindblad's
successors - from Merzbow to Autechre, from Eric La Casa to Sonic Youth
- into context. I have to confess that when I received this disc I had
never heard of Rune Lindblad: now, hearing his works, I am in awe of
him. [Fluxeuropa]

TOMAS BJELKEBORN: PAST TIME, CD
(Elektron Records)
Past Time is a selection of compositions by Thomas Bjelkeborn between
the years 1987-1996. All of them are highly artificial-sounding pieces
of electro-acoustic avant-garde, with some short but effective vocal
clips in them. In keeping with the genre, the material is highly
disjointed, and I for one couldn't get any real grip on it despite
several (17 full listen-throughs, to be exact) attempts. The segments
each track is formed of come in short, dissimilar burst that are hard to
concentrate on. Yet at the same time the number of elements is low
enough to prevent the formation of a wall of noise -effect out of the
diversity. The are several absolutely wonderful parts, but those are
hard to wait for amidst the chaotic whole - especially since the
shortest of the tracks is almost 9 minutes long, and the great segments
just a few seconds at most each. A fascinating exception to this is a
brilliant two-minute wave of noise at the end of the Beatles-ish named
Within Without, an example of noise music at its best. In the end, Past
Time leaves me absolutely cold. Nevertheless its combination of
stylishness, excellent echo structure and the exemplary sound production
quality common to Elektron's records hints very much that it might be an
album many fans of electro-acoustic music would enjoy a lot. It's seems
to be a high-quality work that's just not to my personal taste.

WEREJU: THROUGH THE DEPTHS OF UNKNOWING, 2 X CD
(Electric Requiems)
Eerie, droning ambient soundscapes from Ireland, of all places -- two
cds worth, in fact, although the total running time is under an hour.
(Yes, I know that doesn't make sense -- don't look at me, I'm an
innocent bystander here.) The sound falls somewhere between the more
abstract work of Aidan Baker and the epic fall-of-drone works of Fear
Falls Burning -- it's all gliding instrumental melancholy and heavily
processed guitar, dark soundscapes that resemble the ambient sound of
waves crashing on a distant shore while trawler horns bleat in the fog,
or perhaps the hollow and disquieting sound reverberating through the
subterranean tunnels surrounding the river Styx. There's a soothing
quality to the depressed drone, though, with pleasing sonorous tones and
an elegaic feel to most of the material, a sound that's every bit as
intriguing as it is meditative. This is music for mystical journeys
through darkened inner landscapes -- with stark and brooding artwork to
match -- that should hold plenty of appeal for droning dark ambient
enthusiasts.
