ANDREI SUCHILIN: IKI, CD
(RAIG)
Iki originated among the townspeople of Edo, especially around the
pleasure quarters in the late eighteen century. Middle to lower class
Edokko praised iki fashion, enjoyed iki situations, behaved with iki
discretion to couples, and wished to be iki persons… Iki was defined as
consisting of three marks: erotic allure (bitai) with pride (hari) and
resignation (also sophisticated indifference, akirame).
In the past ten years Andrei Suchilin has scored for the images of many
Russian underground film-directors. Featuring three dark and brooding
collage-pieces with lots of artful quotations, this is not easily
categorized. Over ten musicians of various background got involved in
making this recording. The music evokes a variety of soundscapes, found
noises, classical miniatures, and rocky grooves. It flows with the
imaginary movie-action, reflecting the intensity of the images yet
doesn't overpower them.

ANTON BATAGOV: MUSIC FOR PIANO, CD
(RAIG)
In the beginning of his professional career Anton Batagov won the
recognition as an exceptional performer of the piano-music from
classical and modern composers, and later he introduced to the public
self-produced electronic and experimental works. However, both who
pinned on the artist the “pianist” label at one time and the “composer”
label at another were deluded.
Recorded in January 1999 at the Radio House Studio in Moscow, “Music for
Piano” was taken on special significance for its author but was stored
in archives. It looks now like Batagov attempted to avoid the inevitable
appearance of a new label in conformity with that work: for the first
time in his practice he performed his own piano-music! One year after he
wrote: “These years I’ve once and for all bid farewell to the authorship
complex as applied to others’ or my own music. All these abstracts of
individuality, your own or someone else’s style, innovation, and
etceteras are nothing more than the manifestation of egoism and the wish
to confirm one’s vain ego-superiority over other egos.”
Batagov’s Music for Piano, released in the end of 2003, remains beyond
any particularized expertise or criticism. It reveals the development of
the artist’s personal aesthetics: the next creative act that helps
escaping “the temptation of fixing personal (and global) errors and
neurotic illusions and then presenting all these as one’s
individuality.” A true meaning of what Anton Batagov did more than five
years ago is a continuing movement along the path of Knowledge. With
this in mind, a listener will definitely comprehend the delicate and
charming nature of Batagov’s piano-performance, as well as the pure and
blessed spirit of his piano-music.

CISFINITUM: BEZDNA, CD
(Monochrome Vision)
New album of Moscow-based project Cisfinitum is the experiment in more
emotional rather than in musical domain. Deep and profound, it's
touching the most dark corners of human soul and takes it to the
imaginary otherworlds. This peculiar quality of Cisfinitum music is
achieved through extensive use of soviet analogue synthesizers (ANS,
Polyvox, Yunost-21, Formanta amongst others), but the spiritual beauty
of "Bezdna" is also created by violin and omnipresent voices.
Psychoactive dark ambient combined with melodic incantations.
Limited edition of 500 copies.

DARRIN VERHAGEN: BLACK FROST, CD
(Dorobo)
If black ice delivered the 'searing pain upon arrival' to the black|mass
trilogy, black frost serves as something of a gently uncomfortable
antidote. Bordered by lowercase, delicate electroacoustic, sinecore and
glitch terrain, frost presents material considered, precise yet modest
in tone.
Black frost is the 2nd part of the black | mass series.

HARVEST RAIN: NIGHT CHORUS, CD
(OPN)
Harvest Rain’s first official full-length CD, “Night chorus”, is a
collection of 15 haunting songs recorded between 1995 and 2005. 'Night
Chorus' features about an hour of stunning music, some of which has been
done in collaboration with such great artists as Axel Frank (Werkraum -
vocals, guitars, keyboards, flute), Tor Lundvall (vocals, soundscapes)
or Amanda Votta, a brilliant Canadian flutist While the band found and
followed its own path in the so-called "dark folk" scene, the term was
and still is much too restrictive to give a precise idea of the band's
unique songwriting and playing. Haunting loops, eerie keyboards, ghostly
whispers, ethereal guitars are all a part of "Night Chorus".

IRMOLOGION: S/T, CD
(RAIG)
That word came into the orthodox religious tradition from Hellenic:
irmos – a motet, and logeyo – to collect. As a single-genre chapel-book,
Irmologion was first compiled from a number of irmoses in the 10th
century in Byzantium. A full version of the Russian Irmologion includes
about 1050 irmoses and reproduces a specific classical structure, which
is submitted to so-called “8-glas system” when the irmoses within each
“glas” follow the exact order of 9 songs of the Canon.
The purpose of this brief inquiry is to explain the album organization:
9 tracks (Irmos 1-9) in sequence which is of great importance for the
perception of music. In fact, IRMOLOGION is far from interpretation of
canonic motets; this more resembles a horror-documentary soundtrack
redefining one's dark vision of the world intoxicated by deceits,
illusions, and errors. Consistently dark and deeply disturbing chants
grow up from some distorted references to holy hymns and raise up
everything to the level of apocalypse. Here, the Ceremony is no more a
source from which the author draws his inspiration but an act provoking
him to create a stunning alternative and send this painful challenge to
the tempting and rupturing dogma.
Hand-made cardboard packaging designed by ZonderZond further advances
IRMOLOGION sound and vision (limited to 350 copies!).

KAMMARHEIT, ASLEEP AND WELL HIDDEN, CD
(Cyclic Law)
First “official” cd from this Swedish master of what we could term
Apocalyptic Dark Ambient. After a streak of cdrs and an apperance on the
Nord Ambient Alliance compilation CD, Kammarheit offers us a unique
album of tortured sonic landscapes taking us on an unsetteling journey
through darkened dreams. Homogeneous dark ambiences combined with serene
drones and put together as a shadowy collection of dreamy, melancholic
soundscapes, Kammarheit forms images of long lost ruins, barren lands
and gigantic, rumbling machines. "Asleep and well hidden" was created as
a tool for dreamers, a place to flee to when the outside world comes too
close...
First pressing of 500 copies comes in a 6 panel textured cardboard
sleeve with a 9" by 15" poster. 6 Tracks. Running time; 40:31

KAMMARHEIT: THE STARWHEEL, CD

Sweden's Kammarheit has finaly returned from 2 silent years to offer us
an eloquent, more profound and highly personal album.
The deeply serene drones and melancholic soundscapes are as always the
main focus, but this time Pär Boström introduces an engulfing spiritual
depth to his soundscapes. Here is a new glimpse of the world of
Kammarheit, here's the second meditation.

LE FORBICI DI MANITU: TAGLIARE, 2xCD
(Small Voices)
Veterans of the Italian experimental scene, Le Forbici di Manitù
celebrate in their own peculiar way twenty years of underground activism
through an album recorded live in their cellar, offering new
arrangements, essential and direct, of (nearly) all the “songs” in their
back repertory, appeared from 1983 until today on a dozen of different
releases (cds, compilations, rare cassettes and singles). Laying aside
for this time conceptual electronics, noise-oriented audiogames and
imaginary soundtracks, the atypically affable voice of Manitù Rossi
guides us through an heterogeneous collection of surreal ballads of
desperate love and disconsolate odes to the most despairing normality,
grim dark songs about serial killers and nervous psycho-funk hymns
inspired by old b-movies, touching elegies to deceased Pop artists and
sad reflections on the state of indie music. As a bonus, covers and
hommages between the lines to The Associates, Nico, The Beatles,
Kraftwerk, Wire and Cocteau Twins. On the second cd we find instead
remakes and remixes of other songs by Le Forbici di Manitù, recorded in
the studio through a network of friends and special guests. We hear the
enthralling G-Pop of Valvola & Mac Donald Duck Eclair and the deviant
electro-funk of Technogod and Erasermen, the bizarre avant-punk of
Maisie (with the plagiarist Plozzer) and the rarefied ambient dub of
Teho Teardo. And let’s not forget the tour de force of the hallucinatory
title-track Tagliare (literally “to cut”), an electro-rhythmical
sequence by Le Forbici di Manitù reworked by several international
artists (Mana ERG, DJ Balli, Lloyd Dunn, Rod Summers, T.A.C., Massimo
Giacon, Nocturnal Emissions) and then mixed in a phenomenal cut-up dj
set of over 23’, performed by Marani and Taver of DuoZero.

LE FORBICI DI MANITU: TERRORE NELLO SPAZIO, CD
(Small Voices)
One of the most enigmatic, eclectic and cosmopolitan bands of the
Italian electronic scene returns with a singular sonorization -
originally commissioned by the sci-fi festival Invasioni and performed
live in Cosenza in Summer 2001 - paying a tribute to the cult movie
Terrore nello spazio (1965, a.k.a. Planet of the Vampires and The Demon
Planet) by Mario Bava (1914-1980), the undisputed and unforgotten
Maestro of Italian gothic and macabre cinema (with films like Black
Sunday, Black Sabbath, Blood and Black Lace, etc.), an ingenious and
ironic innovator of the low budget productions that was appreciated and
revalued in France, UK and USA much earlier than in his native country.
Based freely on the story (later plagiarized by Ridley Scott’s Alien) of
the spaceships Argot and Galliot, attracted to land on a dying planet by
ectoplasmic alien-vampires that in order to escape to other worlds need
to take possession of the body of astronauts turning them into living
zombies, Le Forbici di Manitù have created a sharp-witted hybrid of
B-movies retro-fascinations and stylized genre contaminations, by mixing
samplers and analogic electronics with an instrumentation hinting at
jazz (flute, clarinet, congas, vibraphone) and disseminating the score
with surreal cut-ups of dialogues from vintage films (where horror queen
Barbara Steele can be heard in conversation with the high-brow
characters played by Monica Vitti or with the silly comedians Franco and
Ciccio), to permeate it with a mid-Sixties mood.
Active since 1983 with an always transforming line-up - in this case
composed by six individuals - rotating around the mysterious figure of
the founder and guide Manitù Rossi, Le Forbici di Manitù start off with
Terrore nello spazio the celebrations for their 20th Anniversary, that
will continue in the following months with the release of the double
album Tagliare (live + remixes). Moving freely between pop songs and
electronic experimentation and crossing through the most diverse genres
and styles, from conceptualistic noise to therapeutic trance-ambient,
from folk-noir to technoid d’n’b, from progressive suites to plagiarist
symphonies, the band has published till now, besides various cassettes
and tracks on compilations, six CDs for prestigious Italian and
international labels. [Small Voices]

MUX: THE SECOND CONFESSION, CD
(RAIG)
From the seamy side of life, the disease is spread by nauseating
vermin. It overtakes two St. Petersburg’s residents, EDX and DAN271.
They called themselves MUX. They armed themselves with analogue
synthesizers, noise devices, instruments, computers, etc. They confessed
war against the routine that had made infernal fools of their beloved
compatriots… Noisy electronic textures are twitching and cramping upon
convulsive cadences; rusty consonances are scratching your brains;
indistinct rock movements are bringing short relief; but a new paroxysm
of grief electro-shock therapy is reaching you again and over.

SHINJUKU THIEF: MEDEA, CD
(Dorobo)
Originally composed for a controversial staging of the classic greek
tragedy, "medea" is shinjuku thief's most dramatic, dynamic and sinister
work to date. Notwithstanding its extreme violence, it might also be one
of their most beautiful.
Fragile melodies sung by boy sopranos float above demonic choirs and
malevolent orchestras only to be ripped apart by screaming sheets of
industrial noise.
Oscillating between lush musical seduction and a level of brutality as
yet unprecedented across the band's backcatalog, "medea" will appeal to
fans running the gambit of dead can dance, raison d'etre and in
slaughter natives in one corner to merzbow, and brighter death now in
the other.

T.A.C.: SPLINTERED, CD
(Small Voices)
Less than a year’s passed since the release of “Twilight Rituals” and
T.A.C. are back with a new full length album, maybe the band most
accessible effort to date. But don’t expect a pop oriented sell out…
Instead be prepared to fall inside T.A.C.’s kaleidoscope once again. And
again…
While supposed to slow down their recording activity for a while, during
the summer of 2003 the band undertook a series of free form
improvisational sessions that in a very short time brought to a bunch of
fully produced new compositions… their twelfth release actually. T.A.C.
sonic trip goes on through unexplored territories, forcing the borders
between electronica and new psychedelic soundscapes, making room for
gentle ballads merciless deconstructed…
Enter now T.A.C.’s surreal and swirling world. The tribernetic shamans
are back… [Small Voices]

T.A.C.: TWILIGHT RITUALS, CD
(Small Voices)
“Twilight Rituals” is the complementary twin album to “Waiting For The
Twilight”, created during the very same recording sessions.
"Twilight Rituals" also is the matrix of “WFTT” but, according to T.A.C.
wicked logic, being conceived before it had to be released after…
T.A.C. keep on in pursuing their aural alchemy of psycho-ambient
soundscapes, and hypnotic songs achieving atmospheres not so distant
from “Waiting For The Twilight”. This time sounds are more determinate
and static but once again not easy to be classified and still carrying
the listener in a surreal world without any fixed reference-point .
"Twilight Rituals" presents obscure hypnotic atmospheres, faint..., in
which everything is mixed and confused…; where the sound is scanning and
the light is indefinite..., with a sort of sensation of big suspense and
the "things", especially sounds, are never what they seem to be… Sicked
chants and hyper-electronical sounds, destructured (un)human female
voices with acoustics soundscapes...
This is the DEFINITIVE sound-trip from the future past. [Small Voices]

T.A.C: WAITING FOR THE TWILIGHT, CD
(Small Voices)
After a long time of hibernating sleep, this unforgetted experienced
italian band is back in a magnificent body-form, with a new upsetting
sonic paradox...
T.A.C. has created a virtual drome where never heard acoustic waves
collapse into boundless technoid cages, wrapping dehumanized scared
voices from the atavistic twilight of dying future!
The shining (master)mind of the SB restrained this symptons in form of
luminouses distant experiences in an ALIEN URBAN dimension. A
TRIBERNETIC SHAMAN will transfer you in a world of visions, combining
sicked chants with electronical sounds, destructured (un)human female
voices with unbelieveble acoustics soundscapes... Image a sort of cross
between Coil, Matmos, a sort of post-modern obscure evolution of
trip-hop and future hyper electronics music...! A swirling interplay
that aims at sweeping away old musical categories, anyhow doomed to
strain and break under their own burden.
They pursue a declared commitment: to explore the depths of the human
nature and to stimulate the listeners' imagination. DREAM IN LIGHT...

TH26: LA HAINE, CD
(Small Voices)
TH26 were created in the fall of 1993 by Corrado Altieri, musician
involved from early eighties in various wave/post-punk bands. Soon the
band moved to “electronic & industrial” sound territories , with links
ranging from Maurizio Bianchi (the true father of power-noise) to
Klinik, and from Throbbing Gristle to Adi Newton's Antigroup. "La Haine"
presents 11 tracks of pure rhythmic & synthetic pleasures !!! TH26 offer
a CEREBRAL and AGGRESSIVE music with incursions in a sort of
isolationist ambient-noise. Deviated songs and rumoristic experiments
plus great uncompromising hard distorted & filtered vocals...!!! The
album delivers a wide spectrum of sounds: TH26 offer you a rich and
mature work..., sure a great gem for hard-electronic music lovers !!!

THE HAFLER TRIO: ONLY THE HAND THAT ERASES CAN WRITE THE TRUE THING, 2x10"

"ONLY THE HAND THAT ERASES CAN WRITE THE TRUE THING" is a set of four
"rituals" (plus one locked groove) using four voices for four very
different purposes, all on two 10" clear vinyl records with gatefold
sleeve, shadows, and titles. It uses some new techniques for voice
processing developed by THE HAFLER TRIO within the last two years, based
on the properties of resonances of voices to affect acoustic space, and
the meaning behind The Utterance. Something to hand down to the
grandchildren.
This amazing album is packaged in a luxurios gatefold jacket pressed in
heavy cardboard.

TROUM: AUTOPOIESIS, PIC-LP
(Small Voices)
This picture disc was designed by SELDON HUNT (www.seldonhunt.com) with
an amazing artwork and include four exclusive tracks of beautiful drone
music and hypnotic & oneiric ambient experimental music.
"Autopoietic Transformations" [Troum, from the liner notes]: The four
tracks on this LP are all linked to each other, as they all use
fragments or basic structures of their own. In this way they build a
circular system that relates only to itself, although it is at the same
time dependent from the environment (the producers). It is able to
transform itself without losing its integral whole and basic
organization. Each track here acts as 'product and producer', it has
influenced or is a part of the other tracks and uses also parts of
others. The idea behind this is to see music as an own entity, that uses
us to create and transform itself. The idea is to change the regular
viewpoint of seeing ourselves as the focus and being separated from the
environment. The world is not an object, nor is music. Music is in
ourselves and we are music, the same as we create it.

WOMBA: THE 27TH BAKU COMISSAR, CD

In accordance with the album title, “The 27th Baku Comissar” (26 Baku
commissars were Azerbaijan revolutionists who formed a sort of people’s
governing body, the Soviet in 1918, but were arrested and shot soon
after by interventionists from the British Task Corps) offers 27
fragments of minimalist drone aggression which shrives fleshes down and
shakes bones up. Not noise, but a textured and tangled experiment
schemed to subdue tympanic membranes and seduce one’s numbing
consciousness. At times, a paranoiac voice is added to sampled natural
and found sounds, and the creation can suddenly change to pseudo-rocking
song and back again to harsh-sounding electronic. WOMBA, which came into
the world from Kubov’s home laboratory in 2001, has pioneered
zvezdaz-movement and forced contemporaries to accept the inevitable.
