SUBINTERIOR: THE CHRYSALIS SECRET, CD-R

"The Chrysalis Secret" is Andrea Freschi's fourth work and comes after
the self-released "Outfall" and "Insomnie" (both recently re-issued as a
full-lenght disc by Silentes), and "Obstacles", which was released in
Japan by Deserted Factory.

"The Chrysalis Secret" is a long evocative track divided in three parts.
The journey begins with a sort of repeated bell-like sound which is soon
backed by an unsettling and obsessive echoed pad.

Along the road we encounter deep drones - both of a windy and metallic
nature - and abstract textures keep on overlapping themselves creating
slow but ever changing atmospheres, like an infinite serie of
reflections created by subtly different distorting mirrors. Low
frequencies make room for more recognizible sounds of what seem to be
flowing water and animals. We can even imagine (...or are they really
there?) a few piano notes at some point... Sometimes the music seems to
stop and drones turn into a minimalistic affaire, but suddendly melodies
emerge from the background filling the air with colours for a while,
just before turning back to black again. Intertwined with some
isolationist passages, "The Chrysalis Secret" offers many abstract
moments and more complex sections of aural psychedelia. We can't help to
recommend it, even to our most demanding listeners. [Afe]

THELEMA: BURNT MEMORIES, CD

Nine years after their last release (Night of Pan), the Italian
Dark-Folk Wave band par excellence have finished a new collection of
songs, now available on SmallVoices. The band was born in the winter of
1984, when former Throbs of Pleasure Giorgio Parmigiani and former Les
Blousons Noirs Massimo Mantovani met in some punk rehersal room in
Modena, their hometown. The third original member was former T.A.C.
Gregorio Bardini, and together they gave birth to a band influenced by
the ideas, philosophy and magickal opus of Aleister Crowley. “Thelema”
was the obvious choice for a name. Thelema were immediately hailed as
one of the best gothic bands in Italy, even if their roots were punk and
their leanings were more towards experimental and industrial sounds, as
the many tapes produced through the years testify. The original cell,
Giorgio and Massimo, has never been broken, altough many other musicians
have joined them through the years. One thing must be said: even if
their releases are not many, they never quit. Even when the band split
(more than once and for long spans of time), the magickal link between
them always kept them busy working, through music or other media, on the
discovery and realization of their True Wills. And now they’re back.
Mature and disillusioned, self produced. Once again, they’re hard to
label. Once again the sounds have changed. BURNT MEMORIES is different
from NIGHT OF PAN, which was different from TANTRA, which was different
from ROSA+CROCE (see their site - www.thelemaband.com - for a list of
all their releases). The old strenght is not immediately here, as the
music seems softer (but - who knows? - the live set could be a BIG
surprize) and more oblique (Eno is one of Massimo’s heroes) than ever,
but the violence is still present in the lyrics and in the story/concept
which links all the songs in BURNT MEMORIES, and so is the Magick, that
they never abandoned and which has never abandoned them.

exceeds the permissible maximum 800 times – and the city of Karabash,
situated on its banks. This settlement, full of slag with some lead and
arsenic and surrounded by the remains of the forests burnt by sulphur is
located at a dead-end siding of the South Ural railway. It has a second
name – Pirit, which in Russian is an anagram of the word “yperite”. It
fully reflects what people living and born there have to experience -
central nervous system and glands deseases, cancer and mental disorder.
