At the turn of the century 1900, the western civilisation was spreading
its wings over the world, colonizing, baptising and oppressing other
cultural expressions. One of the most significant manifestations of this
era, is the archaeological excavations and explorations in Mesopotamia,
Mesoamerica and Egypt. Professors, adventurers and other explorers of
the romantic spirit of the times haunted monuments and grave chambers in
their task to steal as much as possible to bring home to the safe
western enlightened civilisation. Whole monuments and temples were taken
in parts, shipped over thousands of kilometers and reassembled in
European capitals, where austere authorities proudly announced their
gratitude.
These white-bearded men in dark costumes are personifications of a
schizofrenia that distinguish that time. They are both bandits and
saviours.

This is a sister-work of Ten is the number, produced parallel with
partly the same material, but with oppositional methods. Where "Ten is
the number" is structural, calculated and abstract, "Evocation" is
sensitive, expressive and narrative.

Bisclaveret - A Polish dark ambient/dark wave duo presents its album
Psyche noMine. It took two years to conceive, resulting in 6 songs
(clocking at around 53 minutes). Musically, it's a piece for those
interested in moving, yet extraordinary art. Lush strings, industrial
rhythms and even noise tones at times summarize the background for
Dragos' voice coming from the other, subconscious side of his mind.
Lyrically, it's a concept-album of sorts. All the lyrics deal with human
sub consciousness. The words on 'Psyche noMine' shows a man entangled in
the arcane of the world, somebody who does not notice phenomena around
him. The man whose recklessness or even arrogance so natural for him is
the cause for him being lost in the surrounding reality. The album's
ambiguous title suggests what receivers will deal with when listening to
new Bisclaveret album.

In an article some years ago, literature nobel prize winner W.S. Naipul
was asked how he was able to create characters, and have so much
understanding for people. His answer was short: "You don´t write because
you understand, you write because you don´t understand."

To him the motivator for writing was that he had an ambition to
understand the characters in his novels. I laborated a bit with this
idea when working on the piece Cave songs. Prehistoric religions have
always been a source of inspiration to me - but I have had problems to
approach them in a direct way. Cave songs is based upon a live session,
and through the fragments I sometimes feel a hint of the powers of

This is complicated and explosive. This is innovation and progression.
This is another heavy testament of pure musical genius from IAAOTL.
Entirely instrumental, this album could easily make musicians stand
openmouthed, wondering just how such music is written. No matter how
chaotic they seem, all the compositions are dense and carefully
structured. There are no improvisations or solos despite the influences
of prog-rock or avant-jazz in their music. But there are lots of complex
and dissonant guitar interplay, angry and crushing angular riffing,
insane time and key changes, mind-pounding and panicked sounds,
thought-expanding pauses and weird noise-drones. An A-Bomb To Wake Up is
too overwhelming and complicated for an average listener to listen to,
and much less to understand. This is something that has to be heard to

That word came into the orthodox religious tradition from Hellenic:
irmos – a motet, and logeyo – to collect. As a single-genre chapel-book,
Irmologion was first compiled from a number of irmoses in the 10th
century in Byzantium. A full version of the Russian Irmologion includes
about 1050 irmoses and reproduces a specific classical structure, which
is submitted to so-called “8-glas system” when the irmoses within each
“glas” follow the exact order of 9 songs of the Canon.
The purpose of this brief inquiry is to explain the album organization:
9 tracks (Irmos 1-9) in sequence which is of great importance for the
perception of music. In fact, IRMOLOGION is far from interpretation of
canonic motets; this more resembles a horror-documentary soundtrack
redefining one's dark vision of the world intoxicated by deceits,
illusions, and errors. Consistently dark and deeply disturbing chants
grow up from some distorted references to holy hymns and raise up
everything to the level of apocalypse. Here, the Ceremony is no more a
source from which the author draws his inspiration but an act provoking
him to create a stunning alternative and send this painful challenge to
the tempting and rupturing dogma.

MAGNUS ALEXANDERSON: STRETCHED IN THE DARK, CD

Magnus Alexanderson born January 17th 1961. Studied guitar,bassoon and
musical theory in his youth. Studies at the composition class in
electronic and computer music at EMS/Royal College Of Music in Stockholm
between 1980-82 for Lars-Gunnar Bodin,Rolf Enström,Tamas Ungvary and Jan
W Morthenson. Continued studies in composition privately for Lars
Sandberg (1982-85) and Miklos Maros (1985).

Magnus Alexanderson has mainly worked in the electro-acoustic field. His
music has been performed at festivals worldwide often in combination
with video projection by visual artist Sachiko Hayashi in their duo
MASH. He is also a performing improviser on the electric guitar and
electronics, most notably in the group Decision Dream. They released the
piece Steamroom Variations on the Canadian label Red Toucan in 2005.

MOLJEBKA PVLSE: SADALSUUD, CD

For this album Mathias Josefson, a sound-artist from Stockholm,
collaborated with a number of his colleagues who provided him various
source sounds to work with.
The name Sadalsuud refers to a star of the same name in the
constellation of Aquarius. The name comes from an Arabic phrase meaning
"the luckiest of them all". Nevertheless the album is rather
earthy-sounding, yet mystical and surreal, almost claustrophobic at
times. The sound is vaguely reminiscent of some works by Nurse With
Wound, Maeror Tri or The Hafler Trio, but carries the trademark Moljebka
Pvlse feel. An unsuspecting pre-listener described Sadalsuud as "a visit
to a supposedly haunted house, though only once you've entered the house
you begin to grasp the real meaning of haunting."

PÄR JOHANSSON: THE EMPTY PALACE, CD

Pär Johansson was born in Södertälje, Sweden in 1972 and besides his M.
Sc. in computer engineering, he has studied music, acoustics and Chinese
language and culture. He was a student of electroacoustic composition at
EMS in 1995-97 for Anders Blomqvist, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Andreas Hedman,
Jens Hedman, Erik Mikael Karlsson and Peter Lundén. Since then he has
also worked there as an administrative assistant and lecturer in
acoustics and sound synthesis.

Pär Johanssons music is narrative, sometimes containing recognizable
sounds, but it is not conventional programme music, though the source of
inspiration often is literary or philosophical. Nor is it conceptual
sound art since the aesthetic aspects of a piece are just as important
to him as the underlying ideas. The intention is that it should be
possible to listen to the music without any background knowledge.

Pär wants to avoid an overly intellectual approach to music, while not
abandoning the formal stringency typical of Western art music, and
strive for an abstract, emotional narrative not unlike that of a Chopin
ballade. His works contain several parallel layers in counterpoint - a
trait borrowed from ancient art music. This method of working in layers
has led him to compose almost exclusively multi-channel works. [Label info]

Conceptual album of Shadow Theater, a fusion of two German acts
Flutwacht and Vincenzo Bossi. The album was performed and recorded live

alternated with impressive harsh industrial sounds and power electronics

U.S. CHRISTMAS: SALT THE WOUND, CD

Though often counted among the bands associated with the so-called
underground stoner rock scene, the U.S. CHRISTMAS influences span much
further than that that scene’s foundations in 70’s hard rock or 80’s
heavy metal, delving into psychedelia, space rock, experimental and
beyond. Fusing their influences, USC developed a sludgy, feedback loud
and heavy rock sound that helped them take up a very specific place
among so-called modern avant-underground movement.

Salt The Wound is the third album in the band’s discography and the
first officially pressed release. It is comprised of some of the
selected, rerecorded, and rearranged songs from their first two albums,
Prayer Meeting and Bad Heart Bull, plus three live tracks of which two
songs do not have studio-version analogues yet. Seven studio tracks for
many remain the high point of USC as extreme downer acid-psych-space
rock. Finding a perfectly steady balance of trapping crunchy rhythms,
strung-out guitar riffage at the core of molten swirling and bubbling
synthesizer lava, and echo-drenched vocalization obscurity, they managed
to create a uniquely defining work. It’s a great introduction to the
band for those brave enough to withstand the assault! [RAIG]
