=====

In response to the Ashlee Simpson fracas that occurred
a few weeks ago via Saturday Night Live, one of my
hometown newspapers (Houston Chronicle, Tuesday,
Dec. 7th edition, Section E/Page 3) decided to do an
expose' on how to catch those vile, law-breaking,
potentially criminalistic lip-synchers.

The piece titled, "Lip-synchers don't face the music:
Subtitled: Easy clues to catch performers on the sly,"
on second look, was actually syndicated by New York
Newsday, and authored by writer Rafer Guzman.

So, sit back and review the article so that if you ever
find yourself alone in a dark alley (whether the inner
city or suburban type), and you surprisingly encounter
a would-be, murderous lip-syncher hell-bent on
disrupting your way of life and quality of existence, you
will immediately have these defensive tactics at your
immediate recall and disposal.

So, here goes...

=====

1. Serial Lip-Synchers: How to spot 'em

Audio professional say their trained ears and eyes can
unmask a lip-syncher a mile away. But the average
concert goer can spot one, too, says Timothy Powell,
owner of Chicago's Metro Mobile Recording, which
handles audio for PBS' Soundstage series.

So if you're going to see Jingle Jam Wednesday at
Reliant Arena, here are some tips on how to spot a
faker:

A. Out of synch

Look for the obvious, such as lips moving when they
shouldn't. But if you're up in the cheap seats, remember
that sound travels slower than light. You may be hearing
a live vocal just a moment after seeing it sung.

=====

B. First word

Watch the singer's first word. It's the hardest to nail when
lip-synching. "Once the vocal starts, they're pretty much
going to lock onto it," Powell says. It's the first line, when
they come in, that gets them."

C. The "turn-away"

Look for the "turn-away." To hide any first-line flubs, lip-
synchers will turn away from the crowd, then face forward
again once the song is well under way. "You'll see that at
football games a lot. When they've got it, they'll turn
around and keep going."

D. Where's the mike?

During Ashlee Simpson's infamous Saturday Night Live
appearance in October, Simpson's mike was down by her
waist while the vocal was going. But watch for subtler
moves, too. If the singer's mike seems to stray and
there's no noticeable change in volume or quality, fakery
may be afoot.

E. Listen for the "pops."

Headset mikes - the kind used by Madonna and Britney
Spears - usually provide poor sound because of their
small size and nearness to the mouth. If the mike is on,
you should hear occasional "snorting" from the nose and
"pooping" sounds on hard consonants like "p" and "b."

2. Risky Live Performances

As a result of former Pantera guitarist Darrell "Dimebag"
Abbott's murder on Wednesday, December 8th at
Columbus, Ohio's Alrosa Villa nightclub, we have created
several polls for your interest at the B# RoundTable's
discussion list. We graciously request and appreciate
your opinion. To participate, simply go to:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/BSharpRoundTable/polls

Poll results will be forwarded to you on Dec. 27, 2004.
