EDITOR'S BLURB:

Blurb 1: Do you know the difference between being the
"driver" and "rider" in your Music career? If not, please
read the below article, as well as take the survey at the
end of it. Afterward, I would appreciate your thoughts
on both.

Blurb 2: Alas, that Missouri gentleman, Bob Baker, is up
to his old tricks again...putting out GREAT books! If you
are a musician with a MySpace.com site (I'll lay odds
10-1 that you have one), you will be incredibly enlightened
by Bob's new book's revelations on how to use MySpace
to catapult your exposure and popularity into the
cybersphere.

This book is incredibly eye-opening on how you can
(almost instantly) turn the Internet's largest social network
into your largest fan and sale base. After reading it, you
will agree that you only *thought* you knew how to use
MySpace effectively for promotion, sales and exposure.
So, check it out at http://www.MuBiz.com/bb-bf.html

Thanks!

I. "The Music Highway: R U A Driver, R Rider?"

I once knew a man who could not drive a vehicle. In fact, he was
afraid to even try to learn. Just the idea of his having to make
decisions on which direction to turn, how fast to go at the
appropriate time, or even that his friends and neighbors would
see him moving down the road in a vehicle would make him,
literally, break out in cold sweats.

Yet, interestingly, from the time he began studying Geography
and History in school, this individual had a burning desire to see
the faraway places that he learned about, of which his driving
limitation only increased his frustration.

As a radio/video promoter and media publicist, I often encounter
musicians who are not "drivers" but are only "riders" in their
Music careers.

Like the man above, they want to go miles down the road toward
success, but they are afraid to get behind the wheel, insert the
key in the ignition, turn it, put their Music car(eer) in "Drive,"
place their foot on the gas pedal and be on their way. In fact,
some are so afraid that they won't even open their car(eer) door
to get inside.

Some client prospects will write me asking me to listen to their
music to judge whether it is "good enough" to release. This is a
decision that every musician has to, ultimately, make on his/her
own. This is, for the most part, the result of a lack of
confidence in one's talent, ability and competitiveness to
successfully function in a larger arena and risk embarrassment for
rejection.

And, although compliments from outsiders can greatly serve you,
no one can truly tell you how to arrive at that point of
understanding that you, indeed, have what it takes to succeed...
it is simply a personal peak that you will (or will not) reach.

I have often heard of famous actors or musicians who are extremely
shy, even though they are on display to the world. Even if this
is somewhat true, it is not entirely so as it is obvious that they
have reached some point of confidence by their being able to
function publicly.

Note: At this point in this article, I had a breakfast appointment
with a renowned former football player and coach who, as a player,
is known for literally splitting the helmets of opposing team
players on the field on regular occasions. And, the only reason
that he could not respond to a Chicago Bears' NFL draft, was that
the the U. S. Army felt that he would better serve his country's
playing field. Ironically, he then played football for the army.

The coach explained to me how different the football player of
today is, compared to when he played. He stated that there is
not the same degree of love for the game, and that it is more
about politics, money, entertainment and fame. In other words,
the sports industries, for the most part, have their own
incredible number of "riders" instead of "drivers."

Although not every musician is interested in obtaining success on
national and international levels, my experience is that most are,
particularly, if the nature of their music subscribes itself to a
"commercial" genre, which most do.

However, many musicians appear to be "riders" on the Music
highway, rarely ever getting their Music vehicles out of first
gear and, consequently, never even reaching the speed limit. As
such, to help you determine whether you or a "driver" or "rider"
in your own career, and to assist you in considering taking charge
in a much larger role of your car(eer), please partake of the
below survey:
_________________________________________________________

"Driver"/"Rider" Survey:

1. You have several upcoming gigs at area nightclubs:

A. Your promote them through your local media and pass out fliers..
B. You don't promote them because that is the job of the club.

=====

2. There are a couple of charity or non profit organizations in
your area that are planning their annual fundraisers:

A. You contact them and offer your entertainment services freely,
since this will make more people aware of you and, subsequently,
increase your sales and performance opportunities.
B. You don't contact the charities because they are not paying,
and you are not going to waste your valuable time on non-paying
gigs.

=====

3. As a performer:

A. You work only on weekends, even though you are aware of
other performance opportunities that are available through the
week.
B. You work as much as possible understanding that, not only
will it increase your income, but various levels and outlets for
exposure as well.

=====

4. You are aware of a wonderful gig that is coming up, but you
cannot make it:

A. You help another band out by advising it of the gig's
availability.
B. Since you cannot make the gig, you do not want another act
to gain from it either.

=====

5. Your gig is out of town:

A. You leave everything to chance and don't concern yourself with
such important details.
B. You prepare for it by making certain that you have all
equipment necessary as well as all performance agreements in
writing and deposits on hand.

=====

6. Your rehearsal or performance is scheduled to begin at
8:00 p.m.:

A. You are there by 7:45 p.m., and have already tuned up,
re-strung, sound-checked, or otherwise.
B. You show up at 8:10 p.m. because it's fashionable to be late.

=====

7. Six weeks ago, you agreed to a gig at a local night spot,
however, your long forgotten boyfriend/girlfriend has just come
to town and wants to hang out on the same night:

A. You honor your previous commitment with the performance, and
explain your situation to your former significant other.
B. In making a decision, you think to yourself, "Aw shucks, I
can let this gig slide...there will certainly be other gigs."

=====

8. You have encountered a situation that is, undoubtedly, going
to cause you to be late at a rehearsal or performance. You:

A. You don't worry about it, with the understand that you will
get there when you get there, and they should be glad that you
even showed up at all.
B. Contact the appropriate person(s) and let them know.

=====

9. You just heard this great band on KTUF 666 FM. You:

A. Immediately decide that your sound and songs truly suck
and, first thing Monday morning, you are going to re-develop
your sound to become similar to this great band.
B. Realize that, while this is a great band, it isn't who/what
you represent and you will maintain your uniqueness.

=====

10. Breaking one of your group's cardinal rules, you allow your
boyfriend/girlfriend to come to your rehearsal. And, without
being asked for his/her opinion, during a break, he/she advises
the group that what is missing in your sound is a bagpipe, and
he/she highly recommends you add John Doe/Jane Doe to your
band. In response, you:

A. Take John/Jane aside and thank him/her for the advice, but
also explain that this is a band decision for all members.

B. After bursting a vein, you instantly respond to John/Jane
that since he/she could not tell the difference between a guitar
and a saxophone, even if each was labeled, he/she should shut the
H-ll up.

=====

In passing/failing, give yourself 10 points for each correct
answer, per the below grading system. It should be noted that
a grade of 70 (or 7 correct answers per the below grading system)
is considered "passing."

CORRECT ANSWERS:

1A, 2A, 3B, 4A, 5B, 6A, 7A, 8B, 9B, 10A
_________________________________________________________

Epilogue: Oh, and about that man who could not drive? Well, one
summer, he and his brother (who could drive) were returning from
a trip when his brother suddenly became very ill as they were on
an isolated highway.

Out of desperation and in fear of his brother's life, the man
gathered the courage to drive in an attempt to locate the nearest
hospital for his brother, which happened to be in a town
approximately forty miles away. Upon arrival and examination, the
doctors explained that had the brother not made it to the
emergency room within twenty more minutes, he would have died.

The man immediately realized, through firsthand experience, the
importance of learning to drive, and he is now a driver for the
Greyhound bus company, finally enjoying being able to see the
distant places he could only previous dream of in class.

Again, shall you simply remain a "rider" in your career and being
taken against your will by someone else who is behind your
steering wheel to places you do not wish to go? Or, will you
become the "driver" of your own car(eer) and reach your intended
destination in time before it is too late?
