Exclusive Online Recording Bands

I am preparing to write an exposé/essay, and will likely
conduct interviews with several bands that have recorded
and produced projects exclusively online even though
none of the members were in the same studio, state, or
possibly even the same country while recording and
producing their project simultaneously.

What???

Oh yeah...this is very real, and is already occurring.

As an example, check out Bill Lawrence's amazing
songs as well as just how distant his fellow recording
members were geographically at
http://www.myspace.com/billlawrence

Then, read his "About Bill Lawrence" section as he
explains his recording process. Simply amazing are
the only words that come to mind.

My first witness of this pioneering type of production
was with the 1986 joint video project of Michael
McDonald and Patti LaBelle titled, "On My Own."

The duo recorded their parts separately. Patti Labelle
filmed the video in New York and recorded her part in
Philadelphia while Michael McDonald did both in LA.
And, if memory serves, the two of them did not even
personally meet until they were accepting their
Grammy award(s) for the song.

While this is still a relatively new and rare phenomenon
that has now translated online, more acts are now
being formed and operated on intrastate, interstate, and
even intercontinental levels while executing this amazing
synchronized process of recording.

While the risky tradeoff for some acts is, possibly, a
lack of personal closeness or professional musical
familiarity between band members due to a lack of
live regular performance interaction and continuity, on
the other hand, more projects, goals and successes
can now be realized for far more artists while at a far
less expense.

As with other areas of the "new" music industry, this
will further serve to decrease the financial glut of the
recording phase, making it even more affordable while
maintaining the services of "live" musicians.

[---NOTE:---]

This is a wonderful alternative, particularly, for recording
artists who reside in small towns or rural areas who do
not have a resourceful pool of technically proficient
musicians available at their disposal, and whose careers
slow dramatically, or even stall as a result.

Simultaneously, with such developments following on
the already successful heels of worldwide online
distribution sites (CD Baby, iTunes) as well as
successful online radio stations (Live365.com) and video
stations (YouTube.com), combined with the ability to
now reach the global music consumer directly without
the need to play politics with traditional radio stations
and major record labels, I envision a day when the
"Music" world struggles to recall the existence of major
labels or the respective roles they previously served.

If you have recorded/produced a final music product in
this manner and exclusively online, or you are aware of
an act that has done so, I would appreciate learning of it
as a part of my future study.

In advance, thank you.
