B# Readers Respond To Grace Slick

In response to the Grace Slick article that I
posted on yesterday, several "B# Newsetter"
readers wrote in to voice their opinions that
I have published below. For privacy purposes,
I have omitted their names and contact info.

1. "First of all,who CARES what she says about
anything? In fact, aside from her long dead career, her
name is not even spoken in music circles, and it's not
like she has done anything musically in the past 500
years. The only thing sadder than old rockstars is a
grown, old, dusty,a nd insignificant HATER, flapping
off her gums, and I was not aware she did any art
either, since I know NOONE who bought any of it.
Sometimes it pays to keep one's feeble opinion inside
the skull and behind loose lips.

Let's be real and logical. If no one wanted an older
artist on stage performing, they would not come, and
the shows would end, period. There is a supply and
demand, except for her, and instead of hating, maybe
she can get some gear or stagger to a studio, and
make some music so more than 10 people will recall
who she is before she kicks the bucket. Whatever i
do not like, I do not go see, buy, or talk about,
because wasted breath is something fools do, just
talking and interested in hearing their own bs. Now,
let's all go about our business, dismissing that nonsense,
and go ahead and discuss something worthwhile...
talk is cheap..."

2. "I've read Grace's autobiography, and my girlfriend
married Marty Balin years ago, so I have MET the
woman...She's cool, it's just that she was never into
the music as a life calling...She got into a good situation
early on...could sing well and milked it for a while. She
wrote some great stuff and had a fine voice, but it
wasn't her BIG DREAM, I don't think...

When you HAVE to create music, when it's what
you've dreamed of since you were a kid, you don't
think in terms of "retiring'..You're always thinking of
ways to reinvent yourself so that you have the chance
to CONTINUE to do the thing you love so much.
Being 50 myself, it's always a challenge, so you learn
to appreciate the moments when it's good and
summon the strength to jump the hurdles when it's bad.
Oh...and after 45...NEVER LET YOURSELF GET
FAT or SLOVENLY. It only makes things a lot more
difficult. HA!

Thanks for a great article."

3. "I say if you can pull it off as a rock star over the age
of fifty as some have..and retain a fan base do it!..
some will look ridculous no matter what age..some go
off into other genres as they get older..after all,
musicianship and the art of playing music isn't just for
the young."

4. "I agree with your comments entirely, particularly
since age discrimination is a serious problem that
violates human rights. I would cut her a bit of slick
(pun intended) however in that I doubt she meant all
musicians. That would be insane. I mean jazz players
are in top form way beyond 50. Classical as well.
And rock musicians have proven to age well also.
Being in your 60's does not mean you are incapable
of producing vibrant and meaningful music. I guess the
more I think about it the comment is very idiotic. I
would hope since that was years ago, perhaps she
would have revised her thinking since then. I've been
a fan of hers since way back and I'm just getting ready
to perform piano again in public. I'm past 55 and am
playing the best of my life. We don't need some
gestapo telling us we can't play music! I mean what
was all the liberation talk about anyways. I ain't
changed, just got smarter."

5. "Probably a better way to look at her statement is all
rock 'n' rollers OF MY ILK over the age of 50 look
stupid and should retire'.

X just toured through Atlanta and the show was
amazing by all accounts, and all over 50. Members of
Yes are all (mostly) over 50 and they sell out their
appearances. Not alot of rnr posturing going on in
those bands.

I think the Stones have most devolved into
caricatures of their former selves. I'd like to see the
Journey/REO Speedwagon/Heart tour this summer to
see how they are holding up, but fear it is not well.

So, I guess it depends. There are some 20-somethings
that should retire too;^)"
