Subject: Boycott Universal Music Product!!!
Universal Music Group is hurting the music business and trying to
take away your rights to listen to CDs you have legally purchased.
They are also harming thousands of artists and musicians by
aggressively suing MP3.com, the best thing to happen to musicians and
their freedom in over 50 years.
Help support the musicians, artists and your music-listening rights
by boycotting ANY tapes, records, or CDs by Universal Records and
forwarding this e-mail to EVERYONE!
When you legally purchase a CD, you should have the right to listen
to that CD anytime, anyplace, including over the Internet. A company
called MP3.com has been the pioneer in providing a service called
My.MP3.com which allows you to "beam up" CDs you LEGALLY own so that
you can listen to your record collection on computers via the net.
Artists get paid. Songwriters get paid. The labels get paid. The
program increases record sales. My.MP3.com is GOOD for artists,
musicians, and their fans.
Four of the five major record labels understand this and have entered
licensing arrangements with MP3.com to provide their streaming
services to their music-buying customers. Kudos to Sony, BMG, EMI,
and Warner for being visionary in their support of you listening to
music over the Internet.
However, rather than supporting your rights to listen to music,
Universal Music Group has sued MP3.com to stop the progress of this
program. This week, in the first round of their lawsuit, an ill-
informed judge, who obviously knows little about the Internet (U.S.
District Judge Jed Rakoff), ruled in Universal's favor. This ruling
is meaningless, as it of course is being appealed. (It's important
to not confuse MP3.com with "Napster," as MP3.com has always
supported copyrights and the legal distribution of music.)
It's time that Universal realized how powerful the Internet can be
and how THEY do NOT in fact control the rights to consumers to listen
to the music they have legally purchased. It's time to show
Universal just how powerful the lines of communication on the
Internet are. MP3.com has been one of the most positive forces in
music today! They have helped over 75,000 artists find a voice for
their music, and I'm sure Universal would love nothing more than to
see these lesser-known artists stopped so they can continue to spoon
feed us what THEY are selling. Rather than working in a reasonable
manner with MP3.com, Universal has unfortunately chosen to take the
aggressive, litigious route.
If you are a supporter of music, and want to see MORE music
available, and the rights of artists respected, please help our
cause. Here's how you can help!
1. Forward this e-mail to EVERYONE you know. In a matter of days
Universal will feel the power of millions having read this message
and will no longer be able to hide behind their attorney's but must
face the consumer standing up for their rights. If only five of the
people you send this to forward it to their friends, who in turn
forward it to five, etc., in just TEN generations, almost 50 MILLION
people will know the story!
2. Boycott ALL Universal Music product. This lawsuit is about greed
on Universal's part (don't let them fool you with saying it's about
protecting rights, it's about money! Why else would four of the five
major labels have joined with MP3.com???) So, the only thing they
will listen to is what hits their bottom line. Below is a listing of
all the labels who are part of the Universal Music Group along with a
listing of Universal artists. STOP BUYING MUSIC FROM THESE ARTISTS
AND LABELS!!!!!! Every time you do, you only put money in the legal
coffers of Universal to try and stomp out your rights! DO buy the
music from Sony, BMG, EMI, and Warner. Before buying a CD, look for
the record label.
3. Write your state Senator and tell them how you feel about this
issue. Let them know you support protecting copyrights, but are NOT
in favor of penalizing MP3.com or others who are simply trying to
provide you a convenient way to listen to the music YOU HAVE
PURCHASED! If MP3.com loses this lawsuit, it could mean upwards to
$250 million which is currently being used to support 75,000+
independent musicians and YOUR RIGHTS to listen to legal music, and
given to Universal to further squelch your rights. Don't let that
happen! You can get the e-mail address to your Senator at:
