Perhaps due to the oncoming holiday season, coupled
with the current political climate, there appears to
be a distraction to the point of "standstillness"
within the independent music community somewhat, in
regard to continuous and aggresive pursuit of music
careers.

As such, in the interest of "inspiration," I have
excerpted brief comments from an article/interview
with independent recording artist, Ani DeFranco,
whom I consider one of the most widely recognized
and successful independent musicians today.

May her achievement from a traveling one-woman Folk
artist to her current status within the business
aspect of the music industry, which is mentioned in
the 3rd paragraph, be an inspiration to you...

Also, if you have the opportunity to do so, read the
history of a Washington, DC band called "Fugazi,"
which also parallels Ani DeFranco's independent music
career and financial success.

I had the opportunity to personally speak with "Fugazi"
regarding their independent success back in the
early '90's.

As the saying goes, "If they can do it..."

ANI DEFRANCO:

By Alan Sculley/City Beat/Cincinnati

Throughout a trailblazing career that now spans 13 albums,
Ani DiFranco has written her share of topical material,
with women's rights, the death penalty, sexuality and
patriotism being just a few of the issues she's confronted.

That DiFranco wouldn't shy away from such sensitive issues
is no surprise. After all, she's gotten used to being a
lightning rod for attention, much of it stemming from
aspects of her career and life that make her an unusual -
and inspiring - figure on the music scene.

DiFranco's well-documented business history is no less
unconventional. Now 29, she started her own label,
Righteous Babe Records, and released her first album at
age 19. Today that little label has grown to employ
17 people and has total album sales of more than 3
million. Over the years, she's steadfastly resisted offers
to sign with major labels, making her a hero for
do-it-yourself musicians everywhere.
