THE DISAPPEARING POPULAR SONGWRITER
It appears that the 'visual' aspect of artists
within the commercial music industry continues
its gradual rise, emphasis, and precedence over
artists' talent and audio quality.
This is ironic, since the music industry began
as a strictly aural/audio experience. Often
the visual appearance of a lesser talented
artist, is the determining factor of success,
over another artist who is more audibly talented.
Yet today, the lines between audio and visual
are nothing, if not significantly blurred, with
the most outwardly expressed and resulting
actions validating such, being those of successful
singers who segue into acting careers, or models
and actors who, alternatively, segue into
singing careers.
Courtesy of Suzanne Glass' Indie-Music.com
newsletter, via USA Today, comes yet another
relatively disheartening perspective and darkened
outlook on the music industry, particularly, with
respect to the current status and future of
the singer/songwriter.
Artists addressed within this article, however,
include; Joan Osborne, James Taylor, Paul Simon,
Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Stevie Wonder,
Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello,
Prince and Tracy Chapman, Sinead O'Connor and
Sheryl Crow, among other industry executives.
