A Couple Of More Great Offers For Musicians
My music business eBook titled, "12-Step
Program To Music $ucce$$," has recently
enjoyed its best sales month ever, and is on its
way to setting a new sales record.
As such, I would like to offer up to four sections
within it that continue to make it such a success
to musicians who decide take me up on my offer at
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/BSharpNews/message/250
The above link references my proposed gig
promotion and publicity services that include
three discount levels based on up to four
gigs/performances within a given week.
The number of eBook sections will be distributed
to musicians based on the number of discounts
musicians take from within the above offer on a
1-to-1 basis, again, up to four gigs within a
particular week.
As examples, with one paid gig promotion service,
you receive a single section from the eBook.
With two paid gig promotions, you receive two
sections from the eBook, etc.
This should be understandable when you review
the above info, but if not, feel free to email me
or contact me via telephone for clarity.
And, an even better deal for musicians who opt
to take my combined worldwide radio promotion,
video promotion, and print media publicity, with
the rate at only $175 weekly with no minimum
number of weeks required, includes their
receiving the complete eBook.
Check out subjects the eBook covers at:

My apology, in advance, for the weird code

Your "Extra" Music Means "Extra" Royalties!
If you have "extra" music available that you
have no immediate plans for releasing, or music
that is simply sitting on your hard drive and not
being released, I am also the Director of
Marketing for Houston-based Eartastic Records
at http://www.eartastic.com
Although our label's first artists that we have
signed have come from within the Hip Hop and
Rap genres, we are strongly interested in and
focused on signing artists from *ALL* genres of
music in the interest of reflecting a diversified
roster for as many music fans as possible.
And as such, Eartastic Records is currently
signing recording artists who have music that
has never been released, or music that has
never been made available for sale in any form
or context.
This means that, if you already have music on
such sites as CD Baby, iTunes, or similar sites,
these particular songs do *NOT* qualify as
consideration.
However, again, if your music is still asleep on
your hard drive, or on a burned CD-R, and you
have NOT taken it any further in getting it
manufactured, distributed, promoted, or sold,
these particular songs *DO* qualify for review.

Get Your Gig Broadcast "Live/In Real Time" WorldWide!
A "live/in real time" professional video broadcasting
service has just begun offering a significant
discount off its normal corporate video broadcast
rates to bands and solo artists who would like to,
not only have their performances recorded, but
who would also like to have their performances
broadcast worldwide "live" and in "real time."
You can either travel to the Rockford, Illinois-
based broadcasting service for the service, or it
can come to you. A great idea would be for you
to join with several additional performers to not
only reduce your costs even further, but to also
diversify the evening's performance with other
acts.
This is an incredible opportunity for independent
musicians to *REALLY* take their performance
career to the next performance and recording
levels, and at the same levels as major label
artists have experienced for only a fraction of
the costs.
And, speaking of costs, in order to receive a
very nice discount off the company's normal
corporate rates, you will need to mention my
name ("Kenny Love") as the referral source who
directed you to it.
You can get complete details by visiting the
website at http://www.liveonlineconcerts.com.

Older Musicians & "Making It Big"
Below, is a situation that a reader just sent in
for my suggestion on how to overcome it. I am
sure there are more musicians out there who
have experienced or, are experiencing this
same problem.
Therefore, in the interest of benefiting these
musicians who may, possibly, be on this list, I
have provided my response below.
________________________________________
"Kenny,
Older musicians in Chicago, at least myself, are
having problems getting into bands because
bands seeking musicians will not consider a
musician over, say 35, regardless of that person
having played their instrument for perhaps 20
years.
A lot of older musicians want to make it big too
and would put everything they had into it (single
ones rather than those with a spouse, mortgage,
heavy duty job, etc, though. Found that the
hard way). Have you any suggestions? Thanks."
=====
KL: What you are facing is "commercialized
imaging" that has now run rampant through, not
only the Music industry, but the Entertainment
industry, in general.
Initiated and implemented by the major labels,
for years now, it has been long hidden under the
subtle guise of "marketing," in the interest of
$elling music to the younger music fans who,
statistically, are the bulk source of entertainment
purchases overall.
Consequently, and particularly with commercial
genres, talent often comes in at a distant second
when, in my opinion, it should be the first
prerequisite.
My suggestion for you would be to place ads in
newspapers, such as your local weekly Chicago
Reader and, specifically, include the age range
that you are seeking.
I can already hear someone rustling up an "Ain't
that discrimination?" protest? Well, I don't know,
is it? Because if so, it seems that you were
discriminated against first, and this is simply your
only alternative to obtaining your desire. Actually,
you probably won't hear a peep from anyone.
If you want to make an even stronger case, or
if you want to head off any possible negative
feedback you may receive (as I once did for our
label signing "young" recording artists), state
your case in the ad that older musicians are
being shut out of most bands' considerations of
their participation as players, and that you are
creating a band in this age group for this
purpose.
While on one hand, you should not need to
explain yourself to anyone, on another hand, the
inclusion of this information will diffuse any
possible backlash.
Through advertising, you may be surprised to
learn there are other musicians in your position
who feel the same way as you. Yet, perhaps,
they have not considered placing an ad such as
the above, or that they are simply waiting on a
"leader," of which the charge now appears to
be on you. :-)

Below are two simple, yet, powerful mathematical
music formulas that end with completely different
answers that equate to positive and negative...
_________________________________________
A. The "Addition" Formula:
Gigs + Promotion = Many People At Your Shows
Result: More Fans, & Music/Merchandise $ales!
B. The "Subtraction" Formula:
Gigs - Promotion = Few People At Your Shows
Result: Low-To-No Music/Merchandise $ales!
_________________________________________
Which answer above is likely to produce the
desired result for a career musician whose income
(partial or majority) relies on gigging regularly and
consistently?
Hint: The answer is "A," of which the complete
"how-to" scenario is laid out in its entirety at

Some More Morning (Or Mourning) Musician Humor...
As you probably do as well, I recently received
an email out of nowhere from an, obviously,
well-meaning marketer who only had my best
interests at heart :=). Of course, I could not
resist the temptation and opportunity for a bit
of light humor. The interchange sorta went
this way...
________________________________________
Email Marketer: "Kenny, are you sick of being a
loser and having to put your dreams on hold?
Tired of finally struggling to find success in an
area you have long desired to be a success in,
and are now ready to knuckle down and forge
ahead?"
KL: "No Sir...thank you for your interest and
kind efforts, however, after long and much
consideration, I have arrived at the conclusion
that there is far more to life than success. For
instance, the opportunity to continue struggling
so that your struggling skills always remain sharp
and at their peak. And, believe me...there is no
greater feeling to know that whatever arises in
your life, you can instantly adapt and turn on
your Richard Simmons attitude and get through
this struggle as well, and as you have with the
many in your past and the many to come in your
future. Therefore, I have found it rejuvenating,
no, actually invigorating to keep my dreams on
hold just for the purpose of sharpening my
struggling skills because, in doing so, it gives me
something to look forward to each day."

In Advance, My Apology To All Drummers :-)
A drummer, having had his fill of being the butt
of many drummer jokes, decides to change his
instrument. After some careful thought, he
decides on the accordion. He visits a music
store and speaks to the manager.
"I'd like to look at your accordions, please."
The owner, while gesturing to a shelf in the
corner, responds, "All our accordions are over
there."
The drummer goes to the corner, browses the
instruments for a few moments, then tells the
manager, "I think I'd like the big red accordion
that is closest to the wall."
The store owner looks at the drummer with a
questionable expression, smiles slightly, then
says, "You're a drummer, aren't you?"
The drummer, amazed, responds, "How do you
know? No, don't tell me...you're psychic, aren't
you?"
The store owner, hesitates for a moment, sighs,
then answers, "Heck, no...not at all...that `big
red accordion' in the corner is our store's
radiator."
__________________________________________
A researcher arrives in a remote third world
country known for its natives' deadly violence
from where few outsiders have ever returned.
As such, the natives rarely see anyone who
looks different from themselves.
The researcher, aware of the consequences,
has come to gather data for his thesis on the
mating behavior of the country's giant alligator.
However, prior to leaving his homeland, and with
having been advised and warned of the country
by his superiors, for his safety and security, the
researcher decided it best to conduct some
background on the country prior to his leaving.
In his investigation, he learned that the natives
communicate by drums from village to village.
He also learned that the communication can
range from the slightest pleasant greeting to
the notice of an oncoming war between villages.
On the first night, and after having been asleep
for several hours, the researcher is abruptly
awakened to a strange rhythm being played on
tribal drums.
As the drums become louder, seem to be coming
closer, and the rhythm becomes even more
strange, the researcher awakes his assistant and
says, "I don't like the strange rhythm of those
drums."
More loudness, more closeness, and more
strange rhythm ensue.
Now becoming slightly fearful and rising to his
feet, the researcher says louder, "I really don't
like the strange sound of those drums!"
Suddenly, the drums stop, now raising the
researcher's panic button and paranoia levels to
a new high.
Then, a voice from the darkness and in the
direction of the drums cries out, "Hey man, chill
out already! He's not our regular drummer! Our
regular drummer is playing a Jazz gig tonight!"

"New" 'Affordable' Service For Gigging Musicians:
Actually, this service isn't "new," as I introduced
and tested it for a limited time a couple of years
ago. However, I have decided to bring it back
in a permanent role because, from speaking with
more than a few gigging musicians since testing
it, it appears to be a vitally needed service, and
one that few, if anyone, is providing.
As a performing musician, if you are having to
make sure that the public is aware of your gigs
by your providing press releases and notices to
the radio, television, or print in your gig's area,
or worse, if you are relying on the media efforts
of your venues, you know what a pain that can
be as well as the incredible amount of time it
takes to be effective.
But, if you are not contacting and notifying any
media about your gigs, you are probably missing
out on quite a bit of income through:
* Lost music sales from people who would buy
your CD at your gigs, if only they had heard or
seen a notice about your gig on their local
television and radio newscasts, or read about it
in their local newspapers
* Lost music sales from people who would buy
your digital music download after they returned
home from your gig, if only they had known
about your gig from their local TV, radio, or
press
As I said, I know it can be a pain to stay on top
of all the media sources available in each gig
area, especially if you are gigging consistently.
But, the local offline media is vital, and you still
need them, particularly, for letting local people
know about your gigs in their areas.
After all, let's get real...how many people do you
know in your own local area who actually go
online to a website to learn what artist is
performing at their favorite clubs tonight or this
weekend? Come on...let's count them together...
1...2...2-1/4...2...2...
See what I mean? From my experience, usually,
only the top-of-the-line ritzy ditzy clubs that are
too expensive to go to in the first place are the
few that halfway maintain their website's show
lineup.
Okay, enough foolin' around...
[---WHAT I WILL DO FOR YOU---]
In each of your gig's areas, I will contact all
television stations' newscasts and talk shows,
all radio stations' newscasts and talk shows, and
all print medias' music, lifestyle, and arts and
entertainment editors about your gig.
My goal will be to get you on-air interviews
(which may require your coming into the gig
town a wee bit earlier in the day), and calendar
listings in the print publications. With radio
stations and print media, interviews can be
conducted via telephone from your home base.
[---MY RATES---]
My rates start at just $30 per gig, per week or
7-day period, with each additional gig having a
10% discount, again, as long as your additional
gigs are within your first gig's week/7-day period.
Here is a break-down example based on your
having 4 gigs within a given week:
Gig 1 on Tuesday evening costs you $30 for my PR
Gig 2 on Wednesday evening costs you only $27 for my PR
Gig 3 on Friday evening costs you only $24 for my PR
Gig 4 on Saturday evening costs you only $21 for my PR
Now, assuming you have 4 gigs within a week or
7-day period, your cost above is only $102 for
that week's promotion and publicity for all gigs
combined. On each additional gig, you save 10%
off the initial $30, for a maximum savings of 30%.
And, it doesn't matter if your gigs are all local,
regional, national, or international, again, as long
as they occur within the same week or 7-day
period.
At the very least, if you only have one gig in a
week, you only spend $30 to ensure you are
covered with the television and radio stations in
your gig's area, as well as the gig's area print
media.
You will probably agree that you would spend
almost that much in lost time, packaging, and
mailing out press kits to the media on your own.
If this sounds like a great fair deal, and you are
interested, please let me know when you would
like to get started.
In advance, thank you.

As the Music industry and its related business
continue to evolve, it is a testament that none
of us ever learn every thing there is to know
about it, regardless of whom we are or what
position we hold within the industry.
Through the years, I have, personally, written
hundreds of articles advising musicians on how
to dramatically improve their music careers
while I have also served the Music industry
simultaneously as a radio/video promoter and
media publicist, thus, "practicing what I preach"
for almost 20 years.
Although my articles/columns are syndicated
worldwide to over 100 online & print publications,
they have all appeared in my "B# Newsletter" at
http://yahoogroups.com/group/bsharpnews
which is sent to over 2,000 musician subscribers.
Yet, I still continue to learn something new
about the Music industry, almost daily.
For just as physicians "practice" medicine and
attorneys "practice" law, so it is with musicians
in their "practice" of music, with one distinct
difference. With the art of music, the "practice"
is uniquely two-fold in that it applies to both the
artistic realm and the business aspect of music.

> They have a record of everything that I
> downloaded, why not let me just pull the

KL: I only have a 3rd grade education, but let's
see...could "security" be the reason? After all, it
is fairly easy to see that, in certain circumstances,
an email address, user name, password, id #s, etc.
could very well be passed along to others, thus,
allowing them to get the free re-download, which
would actually be their first time, and which would
then constitute an original lost sale to the seller,
whereby the original download may, otherwise, be
copy protected. I'm no geek, and this is my limited
brain sans steroids at work here.
Poster:
> Now I'm pissed.
KL: As are we all, about something.
Poster:
> Since Apple does will not allow me to download
> these albums again, I've vowed never to

KL: Have you seen the popular film "I Am Legend?,"
starring Will Smith? Should you maintain that
attitude to society's mass acceptance of
technology that makes life significantly easier, in
the very near future, you may be in a position to
relate firsthand to this film, in terms of music.
Poster:
> Sorry, but I'll keep my hard copy CDs.
KL: Ibid. No, let me continue...I hear they make
perfect drink coasters.
Poster:
> If music is going to become completely digital,
> then these companies need to come up with
> some kind of policy that allows customers to
> get their music back in case of a disaster.
KL: I have a suggestion...
Until the company policymakers create such
policies, in the meantime, why not pay Wally
World, er, I'm sorry, Walmart (I am in receipt of
a court order to never refer to Walmart as "that
name" again in public) a visit in the interest of
purchasing (investing in) blank CDs, or whatever
the latest format is.
Then, imagine the newfound fun in creating
archive records of your music, endless hours on
hours, for future offspring who could not care
less as their resistance was futile, and they were
assimiliated by The Borg into the digital world.
Each weekend, they now gather at your humble
abode and enjoy participating in the ritual of
uploading, auctioning, and selling your music on
eBay as collector items.
I'm thinking, for you, this new venture will
probably contain the level of excitement as a trip
to Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch just in time
to see the IRS hauling off the llamas, the giraffes,
and, oh yeah, those long-forgotten lads who came
along just for the rides back in '84, but then
experienced the Rip Van Winkle effect (their story,
not mine).
As opposed to a couple of copies, I might
suggest your consideration of a minimum of five
(5) such copies.
Poster:
> Pray that CDs never go away…
KL: Tsk, tsk...are you aware of the (pardon the
pun) record-setting statistics now occurring with
the closing of physical music retail stores? Have
you noticed that traditional "physical" distributors
that once delivered physical products to music
retailers have merely become a faint memory?
Math Problem Time:
(Note to General Public: Under no circumstances
should Kenny Love be allowed to *EVER* tutor
any of Earth's citizens in math, as the mere
attempt at such an execution is certain to cause
utter chaos and worldwide pandemonium).
[---Back to Topic---]
Math Problem: No stores - no distributors = no
physical product as the justification.
Prayer for CDs to never go away? Are you aware
that CD sales continue to plummet faster than a
bride's wedding ring at learning her groom
had just fled before the "I Do's?"
With digital music, at this point, reflecting a sales
power at a 30% increase over this same time last
year, there ain't that much prayer in the universe.

"Count Your Blessing!"
By Kenny Love
Ever heard the phrase, "preaching to the choir?"
If not, it, basically means attempting to make a
point or convince someone who already agrees
with your position on a particular matter.
Well, I tend to be my own worst critic, even
surprising people at how I occasionally self-
criticize.
Because while it is normally human nature to
tend to not only reject criticism, externally and,
especially internally, I found years ago that
when I was truly honest about myself and my
own shortcomings, it helped me improve both
greatly and faster in the area in which I was
lacking.
In fact, this personal therapy became so helpful,
as off-centered as this may sound, I actually
looked forward to opening up myself to, well,
self-analysis.
Some friends have occasionally suggested this
exercise of mine was a result of my refusal to
compensate duly certified psychiatrists or
psychologists.
In any event, this is about me "preaching to the
choir," with the choir being me. And, should you
choose to come along for this ride, you may find
it a bit bumpy albeit helpful.
On several occasions, I have believed and/or felt
that I was 'burned out', so to speak, on the
music industry and tired of various aspects of it.
As a result, I would sometimes opt to venture
into entirely unrelated fields.
However, another phrase that applies, "the
grass appears greener on the other side, but
isn't," readily describes what was often the
result.
Because, when I had briefly gone into these
areas, I realized that most people who were in
them were not blessed to awake each day (or
night) and go to a job that they had been born
to do.
From birth to high school graduation, I found
that most people had not made a conscious
decision to do the things they were doing to
make a living.
Most often, many people had subscribed to and
had become victims of life, either through a lack
of planning for their true desires, or through
circumstances.
If you consider it, most people with whom you
are acquainted are probably not doing what they
truly want to do in order to earn a living. And,
when they see you working at something you
enjoy, and earning a living at it, jealousy and
envy can (and often does) arise.
Accordingly, most people work all of their lives in
jobs they, at least, dislike, and may even hate,
as a result of the trapping of ongoing bills, such
as; home mortgages, car payments, etc.
The desired vocations that they may have once
had and, perhaps, still do have, are pushed
aside in the interest of "security" of their lives
while maintaining their acquired existence
without a perceived risk.
Yet, most never account ahead of time for the
negative psychological connotations they are
likely to experience as a result of not continuing
pursuit of their dreams.
And, I am acquainted with far more bedroom
musicians, wannabe actors, and heartbroken
authors than I should be. I am well aware of
how some of these folks' true desires and
closeted ambitions eat away at them daily like
corrosion on a battery post.
When I see the misery that is expressed on their
faces, I am forced to revisit my music vocation
and career to consider just how incredibly
blessed I truly am.
I then consider how, each day, I awake and go
to my office to do the one thing that I completely
understand more than anything else in the world,
in an industry that I have been involved in to
some degree for the past 46 years since I was
only four years old (I am now 50).
In fact, one of my main inspirations for my
life-long foray into the Music industry was due
to my being given a miniature trumpet to play
during a March of Dimes parade, of which I could
not play it, and it was taken away and given to
another boy.
Ironically, I not only went on to command First
Chair trumpet in both my junior high school and
high school bands, but I also played trumpet in
both my College and Army bands as well. Funny
how a little 4-year-old anger can be inspiring.
But, what about you?
Do you suffer burn-out with your music career,
or with the music industry itself? No one could
or would ever fault you for doing so, particularly,
in the state the industry is today.
But! Consider the unique talent that you have
to create from your heart, mind, and soul in an
inanimate area of life that continues to be
misunderstood by so many, yet, enjoyed by
most through their experiencing it through
performances, recordings, etc.
Also, when starting to experience burnout,
consider evaluating the alternative of working at
a day-to-day grind (job) that has no remote, nor
the slightest connection to your psyche.
The mere brief daily loss of freedom, decision-
making, and control that you have given up to
earn a living doing something, whereby, every
waking minute is utter frustration.
If your music is not simply a hobby, and you are
serious about becoming successful in your music
career but have not yet attained that level of
success yet, and you are working elsewhere in
an unrelated job, you readily understand what I
am speaking of. But, if you have not had the
misfortune of doing so, try at all costs to never
fall into such an area.
Because, the absolute utopian existence is to
have a "job" that you like extremely well, or may
even love, then create avenues for earning
income with it that supports you.
We should all be so fortunate, shouldn't we? I
believe that if we were, a significant amount of
the stress in our lives would be instantly
eliminated accordingly.
I suppose that a sort of litmus test for the music
industry, for both music personnel and non music
personnel alike, would be to try to imagine the
world without music for even a day...no music in
television commercials, no movie soundtracks, no
music to listen to on that cross-country trip, no
music, no music, no music...
At the end of a 24-hour period, I venture to say
that it is very likely that more than a respectable
number of us would probably be ready for the
rubber room at the local state mental institution.
This goes triple for people I know who cannot
even get out of bed before the stereo is blasting.
So, count your blessing that you are a part of an
industry that most, if not all, of the world needs
for practically every aspect of society, and of
which you are one of its unique creators.
And, after refreshing your perspective, take it
with your renewed and newfound vigor to its
next level in enabling it to improve your financial
support and well being.

"The Power Of Using The *Right* Resources"
(not only is using the right resources important,
but equally important is their order of use)
By Kenny Love
No musician wants to talk about "it"...I don't,
you don't, and they certainly don't. In fact, just
to think about "it" always sends shivers down
your spine and chills up your legs, doesn't it?
So, what is "it?"
Well, "it" is the mass confusion that has been
heaped on us by the Internet...this mixed
blessing/curse, if you will, that has created so
many online outlets and sources for exposure.
Yet, it, simultaneously seems to freeze you in
your proverbial tracks when attempting to decide
just which of those outlet and source paths you
should travel down first, then second, then...well,
you get the photograph.
Sure, you hear of bands on MySpace making it
big by starting out there and creating not only
a buzz, but a noise equivalent to that of an
angry jackhammer on a block of concrete.
Then, the questions come to you, such as;
"How did they do it?" "What exactly did they do?"
"How do I go about getting the same results?
Well, the following information may not exactly
be the trail to the Holy Grail, but if you analyze
it, I believe you will readily see how its organized
steps, execution, and follow through may serve
to assist you with a focus that quickly helps you
not only finally realize your dream, but a reality.

* Airplay Direct (http://www.airplaydirect.com)
Airplay Direct has been around a couple of years
now, and does an incredible job of self-promotion.
Yet, you wouldn't know it if you spoke with more
than a few of my past promotion and publicity
clients, as when I mention the service, most
have never heard of it.
But, if you are not utilizing AD, you are not only
losing money, but you are also wasting valuable
time, and here is how...
Airplay Direct completely eliminates your spending
time and money on packaging and shipping CDs
out to radio stations like so many recording artists
continue to do.
Instead of doing it the "old school" way and
taking a chance on your product being lost or
stolen en route to stations, Airplay Direct allows
you to open a free account and upload three of
your songs, again, for free in order that radio
stations may download them.
But, perhaps, the best part is that your music
can't be stolen by someone pretending to work at
a radio station and getting your music for free,
because AD certifies that each station contact is
actually affiliated with and connected to a
bonafide station. Likewise, each station contact
is assigned a user name and a password in order
to access the site.
* CDs (Compact Discs)
The most recent statistics reveal that as CDs
have continued their downward spiral in loss of
sales, digital music downloads were up 30% more
than this same time last year.
And, although I haven't visited a record store in
years, a friend informs me that there is almost a
reward being considered for anyone who can find
a record store today.
When he told me this, I was immediately reminded
of those Easter egg hunts when I was a small boy,
whereby, I failed to produce few, if any, eggs for
my efforts.
Personally, I am of the opinion that independent
recording artists, aside from having just enough
CDs manufactured to justify for those crying
knucklehead radio personnel and print newspaper
editors who still insist on having "something they
can hold in their arms like a newborn baby,"
should otherwise completely forget about having
CDs manufactured for sales purposes.
Why? Well, there ain't no dang record stores
left in which to place them! And, doing so would
further serve to significantly reduce most of the
recording artist's costs in this particular area.
* iTunes
iTunes now controls approximately 70% market
share. Enough said, but since I like to hear
myself talk, I'll continue anyway. Some "eager
beavers" are giving it a 90% market share but,
realistically, I'll take the mean/average and bet
it's actually closer to 80% market share.
Now, considering that retail stores are closing,
CD sales are continually declining, yet, digital
download sales are up by 30% over this time last
year, you don't even need a high school diploma
to understand what is going on here.
It's now a digital world, Charlie Brown!
* MySpace
Like an idiot, I, stayed away from MySpace for
quite a number of months before embracing it,
but I must now say that it is probably one of the
best creations ever for musicians, particularly,
as it relates to the new digital music world.
Despite complaints, mostly by the media, of its
less than enthusiastic cosmetic appearance, of
which I could not care less, one of the most
important factors that got my attention is its
intricate ability to narrow down demographics
ranging from countries to zip codes. In other
words, you can customize your marketing and
tour route expeditiously.
* Radio Stations
Who woulda ever thunk it? Radio, and I'm not
just talking about little small market "unimportant"
stations (major labels' words, not mine), but I'm
talking about MAJOR market stations, like in LA,
New York, Chicago, etc. are now BEGGING for
artists to upload your MP3 files! Can you believe
it? Many even have online forms that allow you
to complete prior to uploading your MP3s.
But, why?
Actually, that last dumb question should be
considered rhetorical in its nature, because we
all know WHY they are doing this. Obviously,
their godlike presence has now been greatly
dissipated like the witch in the Hansel & Gretel
story.
Well, maybe not THAT bad, but they have
certainly had the wind knocked from their
fluttering sails, with the incredible number of new
online radio stations, satellite stations, record
labels folding, artists not sending them CDs, etc.
Life can be oh so tough sometimes...
Suggestion: Before going back to the "old school"
process of mailing out media/press kits to stations,
again, use email to direct them to your Airplay
Direct site to download your single, along with a
combination of using online/Internet radio stations,
such as at http://www.live365.com and similar
online radio station networks.
If stations still demand the compact disc, of which
some will, at least you now have an asset through
Airplay Direct that evens your odds with the radio
stations that will download the file.
* Rhapsody
Sooner or later, and probably more soon than
later, I believe that music is going to, inevitably,
be presented to the public for sale in two primary
formats, which are:
1) Digital Sales, of which are already and obviously
prominent.
2) Service-Paid Streaming, which should normalize
into, become mainstream, and be adopted by the
public rather quickly, since its process will very
much operate the same as paid cable and similar
services operate already.
Music fans will then be able to listen to music 24/7
at one low price, thus, saving themselves money.
At the same time, this is, yet, a further positive
asset for recording artists since this will now add
another new income stream.
* Worldwide Social Networking Sites
(You Mean There's More???)
Reverting back to MySpace for a moment, it is,
indeed, powerful. However, I have a pleasant
surprise for you.
If you go to http://www.google.com and type the
phrase, "list of social networking websites," in the
box, then click the first link on the page, I believe
you will be happy when you discover the myriad of
additional social sites that exist, along with their
incredibly large numbers of subscribers who are
eagerly awaiting your music.
_________________________________________
Now, with all of the preceding info, do you, sort
of, get the idea I am attempting at all costs to
save you money that will, by default, allow you
to greatly increase your profit$?
It is almost as if a new sentiment has now come
on the horizon that, basically, says, "In order to
make money, you gotta save money."
If anyone understands this, please send me a
sign that you, indeed, do. Because, it's 3:12 a.m.,
and my insomnia has just kicked into overdrive.

Are you long fed up with people who don't know
an F# from a B-flat always attempting to decide
the price musicians should sell their music?
The worst ones are the ones who strongly feel
that music should be freely given away. And,
since that isn't a reality, many then pirate it
and illegally file share it.
Well, today, I surfed upon some individual who
had posted a rant/rave on this subject. And, he
had ideas that I felt warranted a response, of
which I have dissected and responded to below.
In fairness, please read his post in its entirety

> What they want to do is sell iPods
> prefilled with music from Universal
> Music's massive library.
KL: I see nothing wrong with this, as the music
serves as a (sort of) incentive and bonus.
Companies unrelated to music companies have
been doing similar deals with their products since
the beginning of time, and will continue to do so
after the clock has stopped ticking.
> Then charge a subscription fee for unlimited
> access to the rest of their music.
KL: I see nothing wrong with this either, as it
too is a familiar "buffet" landscape, with some
of the most notable situations being your local
cable provider or your satellite service.
> Also Universal wants a kick back for every
> iPod sold.
KL: Well, the "kickback" is after the fact,
meaning, the iPod has already been sold and
such a kickback doesn't affect you as a
consumer whatsoever. Perhaps, it is more of
your own personal issue in simply being aware
that such a payment is being passed along from
your retail payment which, again, should not
affect you. After all, it isn't as if you must pay
two different vendors directly for the same single
product.
> This kind of all the music you can listen to
> thing is not new; Rhapsody and Nabster have
> been doing it for awhile now. I have tried
> music services like this and didn't like them. I
> found that the limitations (DRM) were too
> strict and I would rather spend my $14.99 a
> month on a new DRM free album from Amazon.
KL: No, it is not new, and you are going to find
more and more services coming out with this
"subscription" process as it simplifies and
satisfies all parties concerned.
> The music industry needs to understand, we
> don't want to pay for music.
KL: Your statement here directly contradicts
your previous statement where you say, and I
quote, "I have tried music services like this and
didn't like them."
> The music industry needs to understand, we
> don't want to pay for music. That means they
> need to think of other ways to make revenue.
> Just look at what Radiohead and NIN are doing.
> They are giving away their music (or selling it
> very cheap) and are still making money.
KL: At this point, I must express my lack of
understanding on how many people fail to see
that music is the product created, produced,
promoted, and distributed by musicians.
This is the same as with a soap maker, a farmer,
an auto maker, and every other commercial
product or service manufactured or provided.
However, with the literary arts and, particularly,
music, because it is an intangible state, it is
significantly devalued.
Yet, try to imagine certain instances or sectors
of our society that could function and be
attractive to its target markets without the
support of music.
In fact, as musicians, let's try the age-old
experiment of boycotting society by taking a
day and not playing a single note of music.
Then, I believe everyone who doubts the validity
and the role that music plays in our worldwide
society would have a different perspective.
Also, I'm not sure what you do as a vocation to
put food on your table, but I'm sure that you
don't give it away or do it for free. And, I'm
sure that if the suggestion was even made that
you should do it for free, whatever it happens to
be, it would incite not only a personal insult, but
anger within you as well.
> Don't get me wrong, I am happy to see some
> big players in the music industry trying new
> things, but when they are in the wrong
> direction it makes me remember why they are
> struggling in the first place. Subscription fees
> and kick backs are not the answer. They need
> to learn how to add more value (and/or bacon)
> to their products, and then we will want to
> buy them.
KL: In closing, I find myself questioning what
makes consumers, such as yourself, immediate
"experts" on the music industry and its mechanics.
While I disagree with much of the "corporate" side
of the music industry, too often, I have found
consumers want to dictate and direct something
that few of them have any remote knowledge
regarding its operations.
Add to that, a great number still pirate music
and illegally share digital files even though
music's retail prices are at an all-time low. And,
when consumers speak, more often than not,
they are speaking about the direct income of the
musicians themselves, of which I take great
offense, since I too am a musician who earns my
own living through various aspects of the Music
industry.
Too often, anger can be felt, heard, and seen
from consumers such as yourself because music
is not free as you wish, causing me to wonder if
Bill Gates would also consider giving away about
a billion copies of his software upgrade, since it
too is classified as an "intangible" product.
After all is said and done, you always have the
option of not purchasing or supporting an artist's
work, thus, saving yourself an incredible amount
of stress and wasted time writing essays such
as this.
And, no, I won't buy you a beer as you
requested because, not only was the post
unenjoyable, it showed your overt lack of
concern for another's way of earning a living,
and in this particular case, my fellow musicians.
And, besides, I'm a wine man myself. Château La
Mondotte Saint-Emilion red, if you please.

Some Of Us Are Never Satisfied
Perhaps, Mick Jagger said it best ("Can't get no satisfaction")
because society appears to thrive on drama, regardless the
level or aspect. As such, I felt compelled to recently respond
to a portion of a rant/rave by a forum poster who couldn't
seem to decide in which format he likes his music (analog or
digital).
Upon conclusion of your review of the below, and to post your
opinion on this subject regarding which music format delivers
the best sound experience for you, let's start an argument, er,
I mean, discussion over on the "B# RoundTable" at

Kenny Love's Response:
In the words of Bill Cosby, "I am so sick and tired (or tired and
sick?)" of this age-old argument, that I could, well, anyway...
For years (pre-digital age), people moaned and groaned about
the "scratches" that occurred on LPs, primarily, due to their
own misuse and lack of proper care which, ultimately, was also
the reason for a certain percentage of increased vinyl record
sales. That's right, Mr. Superstar Vinyl Recording Artist of
yesteryear...some of your sales awards may have very well
been a direct result of a certain number of your fans
accidentally destroying their initial copies of your vinyl record.
Then, upon realizing they could not live one moment longer
with a less than perfect copy, returned to the retail store to
purchase, yet, another. And, maybe, just maybe, we ought
to now re-tally those sales again, just to be sure you actually
earned those Gold, Platinum, Multi-Platinum, and Diamond
awards.
The "warmth" that some listeners later claimed to be missing
from the new digital forms of music was not even a
consideration during the pre-digital age. Why? Well, because
of an UN-availability of a better sound. As such, you couldn't
miss what you never had since there was nothing else to
compare it to.
So, what have we suddenly become in this new digital age of
super technoogy...bionic, whereby, we can audibly discern the
most subtle of nuances between analog and digital so well that
we can make, pardon the pun, "sound" judgment calls? Many
people I know can barely hear their alarm clocks going off in
the morning during the first ten rings! Suddenly, sound is "too
clean," "too clear?" Isn't this what we sought like Moses in the
Promised Land?
Perhaps, here is a theory of what has occurred to many
nightclub deejays who have refused to relinquish their vinyl
and would rather die at the claws of Louisiana swamp beasts
before surrendering it. Incidentally, my apology to Louisiana
swamp beasts...after all, some of my best friends are...
Perhaps, just perhaps, mind you, there has been an ongoing
government conspiracy (not reasonably unlikely with the Bush
Administration and well within the confines of an X-Files format),
whereby, certain nightclub deejays have been captured under
the cloak of darkness as their heads are enveloped with a dark
cloth and they are whisked away in a black van to the sounds
of screeching tires and revving engines, then taken to an even
darker warehouse where a lone light descends by a fine string
from the ceiling.
The nightclub deejays' are then forced into a chair that has
been strategically placed under the light, then purged of all
they know and are aware of, subsequently lobotomized, with a
reinstatement of specific brainwashing computer code of which
its sole purpose is to activate their newly installed programming
that initiates and spearheads their proclamation and support of
vinyl records having a lifelong historical place in the annals of
the Music industry.
<Whew! Don't you just abhor run-on sentences? I hate 'em!>
Indeed, the nightclub deejays have now become the modern
day Patrick Henrys chanting "Long live vinyl! Long live vinyl!
If I can't have the liberty of vinyl, then give me death!"
And, unseen by the deejays, actor Mark Wahlberg, fresh from
his starring role in "Shooter" while refusing to return his
Cheyenne Tactical .405 military rifle to its rightful armory, cocks
its hammer as he awaits at an elevated distance of 1500 yards,
with the deejays trained perfectly in his sight.

How To Succeed In Getting Gig/Tour Press
By Kenny Love
I am, once again, writing articles and columns for a number
of external music and arts/entertainment publications (both
online and print versions), and you are likely to see them in
a few additional areas.
As such, one of my new editors recently received a
question from a musician who is having more than her fair
share of problems obtaining print media coverage in areas
where her band is touring.
I have maintained the correspondence flow chronologically
so that you can follow its progression.
Hopefully, my advice can benefit you and your band as
well should you experience similar difficulties with obtaining
print media support for your gigs/tours.

Hi Corey,
I love your blog, i read it a lot. I started touring with my
band last fall (we were in New York City before that...), and
we're about to leave on another tour for our debut ep.
Booking is going as well as can be expected starting out,
but we're having a hell of a time getting any press...we
have a kit and an epk, and a press release, and we send off
everywhere, but we're in that limbo spot where honestly,
not many people care about our music enough yet...any
suggestions? If you have time, our stuff is at:

I'd really appreciate any advice or feedback, and if you'd
like to write something, I wouldn't be disappointed.
Thanks for your blog, and what you do!

Megan,
First, I am going to check out your music and see if there is
anything I can do.
Next, I am going to copy a man named Kenny Love. He has
over 18 years of experience helping musicians like yourself.
Also, Kenny is going to be guest blogging on the Musicgoat

Hi, Corey:
What has been occurring for several years (if not longer)
and, particularly, with local and regional print publications,
is a little thing called "nepotism."
I utilize this phrase to describe print papers that will only
devote "ink" (press coverage) to their local/regional up-
and-coming musical artists, with the only exceptions being
granted for mega superstars or outside artists who are
coming into the media sources' area for performances, of
which the latter describes Megan and her group.
And, since she and her band are, indeed, touring and
"qualify" for coverage in their performance areas, they
should conducte an in-depth search on the web (using
Google) for print media in each of their tour stops.
As an example, and in Megan's situation, if she is playing
Richmond, Virginia, she should simply use Google to search
phrases such as:
* "richmond, virginia print media"
* "richmond, virginia print publications"
* "richmond, virginia music magazines"
* "richmond, virginia arts and entertainment magazines"
* "richmond, virginia daily newspapers"
* "richmond, virginia weekly newspapers"
or similar key phrases.
She should then contact the print editors or music editors
in each area where she will be appear and inform them on
her performance location, i.e., name of venue, date, time,
etc. and also request if the editor would be interested in
interviewing her/the band in advance of their performance.
At this time, she should also direct the media to her
website for advance review of her music, biography, etc.
With print publications, she can do interviews via telephone,
or if the media prefers "in person" interviews, she could
simply schedule the interview earlier in the day prior to her
performance, which will mean she will need to get into
town a bit earlier than normal set-up time.
Megan should also bear in mind that, with print publications,
"lead time" (the amount of advance time publications require
to review projects before writing about them) is very crucial
in order to ensure media coverage.
Daily newspapers, generally, demand a minimum of 2-3 weeks
"lead time" and, possibly, longer depending on the publication.
The "trick" is to stay anywhere from 3-4 weeks ahead with
the ("lead time") of each tour appearance.
Example: For an upcoming May 3, 2008 appearance, daily
print media contacts should be initiated around April 10th at
the *latest*.
Likewise, she should also contact radio station talk shows,
television morning shows, prime time talk/interview shows,
television newscasts, and cable music and entertainment
shows at *each* station in each of her tour cities.
Should she secure any media interviews, she should then
notify other media contacts in the same area that she will
be interviewing with the particular source, in an effort to
influence them to consider her as well, in addition to
requesting their reviewing her already scheduled interview.
This can (sometimes) serve to foster a bit of competition
between local media, with all being good for the musical
group.
To add even better "fuel to the fire," she should invite all
media contacts in *each* area out to her performances.
This can, potentially, serve as background media coverage
*after* she has performed, and the opportunity to get
TWO bits of media coverage, thus, prolonging her exposure
in a single area.
She should be sure to provide complementary media passes
for all local media contacts that have agreed to come out
to the show, as well as inform the venue owners of the
media contact names. This should be tightly coordinated
and confirmed with venue owners or managers.
While this seems a bit more work, as you can see, there are
definite advantages and as well as "extra" opportunities for
media coverage within a single tour location if conducted
well.
Now, multiply this degree of opportunity within *each* tour
area, and she is likely to create quite a buzz on her tour
route as well as have a degree of successful results through
implementing this proactive process.

"A Change Is Not Coming...It's Already Here"
By Kenny Love
SPONSOR: http://www.eartastic.com/kl/VS.html
It has been several months since I posted an
article to the list relating how musicians and
recording artists can dramatically improve their
careers within the Music industry. If you are
new to the "B# Newsletter," you can review it,
along with a number of its article titles at
http://yahoogroups.com/group/bsharpnews
However, I believe you will agree today's "essay"
has long been needed, and is vitally applicable
to surviving within today's 21st century music
industry that is, at a minimum, unpredictable.
By the way...my independent promotion and
publicity services have now been limited to my
working with clients in the Classical, Jazz, and
Gospel genres, as I am also now co-owner of
Houston-based Eartastic Records and am
serving as its Director of Marketing
( http://www.eartastic.com ), which segues
into the subject matter ("Change") of my below
article.
Upon your conclusion of reading it, please feel
free to submit your comments regarding the
article to me at kennylove@...
_________________________________________
[---The Mechanics and Elements of Change---]
Probably nothing else prior to the current U. S.
election process and, specifically, Senator
Obama's campaign, has utilized the phrase,
"change," more. Almost everywhere one looks,
people are ripe for, subscribing to, and even
demanding change for this, change for that,
change as an alternative to the long existing
status quo.
Jazz recording artist Dr. Donald Byrd, whom I
had the pleasure of seeing in concert during
my college years as a Music major, once
released a highly charged uptempo rhythm
loop back in the 1970s titled, "Change (Makes
You Want To Hustle)." The few but compelling
lyrics are...
"Change...makes you want to hustle,
Change...things just rearrange,
Change...makes you want to hustle,
Change...nothing stays the same...
You can hear the highly driven piece at
http://www.rhapsody.com/donaldbyrd (track #4)
In a nutshell, and its simplest form, I believe
the message people are, basically, sending is
that they want, expect, and demand
improvement. But, not just any level of
improvement, mind you, but remarkable
improvement with a capital "I."
The interesting thing is, I cannot recall
witnessing so many people, in so many
different areas, within so much diverse
environments, demand improvement at the
same time.
However, the changes I wish to focus on in
this article have, are, and continue to occur in
the Music industry. And, although a few
people are uncomfortable with certain changes
that are occurring in the Music industry, one
thing is certain...change is inevitable, and
nothing will stop change and its first cousin
known as evolution.
As examples, as simple and quickly as it has
become for both radio station and nightclub
deejays to download the same quality of music
as is produced on compact discs from sites such
as Airplay Direct ( http://www.airplaydirect.com )
and, thus, making operations within the Music
industry far easier for everyone at every level,
and certainly less expensive operationally, it is
disconcerting when these particular music
industry personnel resist emerging from their own
private "Dark Ages" by still insisting on receiving
physical product through postal mail.
With sites such as Airplay Direct, not only are
packaging and shipping costs eliminated entirely,
but for the most part, time and chances of loss
or theft via mail is virtually (pardon the pun)
eliminated as well.
An additional element for nightclub deejays is
many still utilize antiquated technology, such as
vinyl recordings, while citing the "warmth" of
vinyl as the reason for their choice of voice.
Yet, the reason the industry and the public alike
abandoned the vinyl format and opted for the
compact disc was due to vinyl's sensitive
physicality. In other words, the vinyl format
would "melt" if not left in a perfect temperature,
could be warped, or scratched, all which
compromised listening pleasure.
Ironically, some music producers are actually
creating "scratch" effects on some recordings
of their songs on compact disc in order to
satisfy some deejays.
Some nightclub deejays are vehemently opposed
to joining 21st century technology and, thereby,
performing their shows via laptops or iPods while
patching their sound through club house systems.
Some are still dragging heavy double 15-inch
cabinet speakers with them to their gigs.
For musicians and recording artists, however,
change has reflected both good and bad. It
has reflected good in the sense that more
online promotional, publicity, and sales outlets
and resources are now readily available than
ever before. Again, this is about obtaining
more convenience at both artist and consumer
levels.
Yet, simultaneously, it has reflected badly in
the sense that, not only has an unforeseen
glut been formed through these additional new
resources making it easier and more affordable
for, practically, anyone to throw music up on
the 'Net for sale, but with so many outlets and
resources, more time is now required for artists
to bring attention to their target markets and
fans.
This, ultimately, fosters a juggling act for
artists that is confusing, at best, for most
through their continuous wondering which
proverbial door(s) to go through for success
as a result of their limited and undercapitalized
budgets and time.
[---What Musicians *MUST* Do NOW To Survive---]
If musicians/recording artists are to survive
(and thrive) within as well as escape the highly
competitive glut that is increasing even as I
type these words, there are some actions that
*MUST* be immediately taken to insure career
longevity, of which I refer to as "talent
multiplicity."
Simply put, and to both adopt and embrace the
new 21st century methodology, this is about
multiplying your talent, then applying it to as
many feasible areas as possible.
This readily supports a statement I heard years
ago that says, "Create a single product or
service, then learn how to sell it a million
different ways."
[---Areas To Consider For "The Multiplicity Effect"---]
* Learn To Read Music
This may seem an "old school" worthless idea
to some and, perhaps, even unnecessary in
this age of automated production, but allow
me to show you how you can greatly benefit
from learning to read music, at least, to some
degree.
If you currently cannot read music, you are
likely limited to producing your own music as a
solo artist or, at best, working in an equally
limited band situation. Consequently, you are
likely cut off from earning the bigger end of
music performance income with other
organizations, even in your own area.
However, in learning to read music, consider all
the music income doors you could then open,
availing yourself to whatever prizes are behind
Door #1, Door #2, Door #3, or more awaiting
treasures.
Treasures such as performing in upscale
orchestras, as theatre accompaniments, or
better yet, consistently going on plush tours
with major recording and/or performing artists
whose backup bands or music ensembles are
usually required to read music.
* Learn To Play Multiple Instruments Equally Well
The art and science of "multiplicity" can also
have incredible results when activated with a
product or service that is in demand. As an
example, let's say you learn to play several
instruments very well, i.e., guitar, bass, drums,
keyboards.
Now, in having accomplished such, whether
you reside in a decent size town or small
community, one thing is for sure...you have
just multiplied your marketability with the
opportunity to experience 3-4 times as many
calls for jobs.
What does that really mean?
Well, it simply means you could easily find
yourself in great demand for either one (or all)
of your instruments for live performances, thus,
also increasing both your studio recording
and/or your live performance income accordingly.
* Become An In-Demand Master Producer
If you have a great command of the mixing
board console, along with having equally
creative talents and technical skills, why not
boost your income by producing talented area
artists who are musically creative but who also
don't have a clue on how the technical end of
getting music produced and processed occurs.
Obviously, to corner your local or regional
market, you will need to either have a
reference disc, or better yet, a website for
allowing prospective customers to hear your
production skills via your audio files in advance
in order to secure these future clients'
production work.
* Get Your Music Onto Film/TV Show Soundtracks
Actually, I've addressed this particular subject
in past articles, yet, it bears repeating due to
the lifetime residual income royalties that are
easily attainable, yet, are being missed out on
by most musicians and recording artists.
This is, primarily, because they are both
unaware on how to best locate these sources
as well as intimidated by one of the "bigger"
elements of the Music industry.
Formally referred to as "music licensing," this
ongoing financially lucrative area is a dream
come true, particularly for independent
musicians, and here is how and why...
Back in the late 1980s/early 1990s, after
experiencing great ongoing negotiating difficulty
and expense in trying to obtain and license the
music of major label recording artists, film and
television program music supervisors finally had
enough and began opting to work (almost
exclusively) with independent recording artists
for their upcoming sound tracks, as they found
Indie artists far easier to contract with and
significantly less demanding.
Obviously, this was another costly and greedy
misstep by major labels and their attorneys
that they have lived to regret.
It wasn't that the major label artists
themselves were difficult to deal with in this
instance, but their label representatives and
attorneys were the primary causes, with their
ever present corporate greed and price
gouging presented to film and television music
supervisors.
Now, most music heard on film and television
soundtracks today is that of independent
recording artists, and is how many Indie
artists quickly become popular on a large scale.
I also feel that ongoing corporate greed, such
as soundtrack negotiation failures and a loss
of this particular lifetime income source for
major label artists continues to contribute to
major label artists abandoning their labels
permanently at a high rate and taking control
of their careers.
Then, add to that, the difficulty major labels
are having in signing independent artists today
in an effort to replace artists they are losing.
The independent musician and recording artist
of today is more confident than the artist of
yesteryear, and is more likely to take the reins
of his or her career from the start.
In my opinion, this current music business
trend foreshadows an extinction of major
record labels as we have known them, with
the extinction occuring very soon.
Now, in closing this article, imagine your being
able to easily utilize a minimum of two of the
above areas (or more) simultaneously while
also imagining one of the most important
aspects...the income possibility that can now
become a reality.
Several areas addressed in this article also
carry corresponding products to assist you in
easily getting started in the above respective
areas for increased music career benefits at

Call For Your Thoughts & Opinions On Music Industry
I am preparing a report for the MuBiz.com blog

thoughts and opinions of "B# Newsletter" readers
on how the Music industry should fix itself with both
artists and fans alike.
Please feel free to email me at kennylove@...
with your ideas on:
* how it can be repaired
* what needs to be done
* where repair/fix should begin
* who needs to do what
* why it needs to be done
* when repair/fix should begin <==a no-brainer, right?
If you have not, yet, had the opportunity to offer your
own opinion elsewhere, please feel free to rant, rave,
and get it all off your chest, so to speak, internationally.
Additionally, understand that your name and position
within the industry will be included as a part of your
response. And, if you provide your website, we will
gladly include that in your post as well.
The blog will be posted on this coming Monday
(December 3, 2007), and will be pinged and sent to
hundreds of blog services that are, literally, read by
millions of people worldwide.
So, if interested, please get your information to me as
soon as possible so that I can begin preparing this
report.
