Inspiring and fun Bible-related article for Christmas by an unknown author.
1 CORINTHIANS 13 - - A CHRISTMAS VERSION -

By an unknown author

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling
lights and shiny balls, but do not show love, I'm just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies,
preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at
mealtime, but do not show love, I'm just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all
that I have to charity, but do not show love, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes,
attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's cantata but do
not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child.
Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband.
Love is kind, though harried and tired.

Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas china
and table linens.

Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful
they are there to be in the way.

Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return but
rejoices in giving to those who can't.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures
all things.

Love never fails.

Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust,
but giving the gift of love will endure.

Unfortunately some sad news about a former Candlewood/East classmate.

Debbie Perri (who married Todd Rainey) passed away yesterday. Her brother
Darin is married to a friend of mine and that's how I found out.

Even if you weren't in contact with her, it's always sad to hear of a person
dying so young, especially leaving children (2).

She had lymphona some years back and was recently suffering from some lung
ailments.

Dear Subscriber,

Hi again!

We moved out to Hopkinton (starting line of the Boston Marathon) almost
4 years
ago. This Saturday I'll play a show at the new Main St. location of
Enter Stage
Left (our local theatre troupe). Please come on out and join us in my
new
home-town for a cozy (read "small room") night of new songs and golden
oldies.

And there's still time to email song requests - hopefully, with advance
notice I
can re-learn the ones I've forgotten...

Hope to see some of you!

Thanks for your support, and take good care,

Barbara

Hey everyone -
Below is the latest e-mail from Barbara! By the way, a few weeks ago I
managed to make it back east for Barbara's mini-set at the Kickin' Cancer
Benefit in
West Boylston. It was a very very cold day outside and poor Barbara's hands
were freezing, but it was a great short little set from her! She played Big
Sky, Grown Up Love Songs, Happy With You, Notion, Deep Country, and Always
Singing Now. I taped it so if anyone would like a copy, let me know and I can
send
you out a cd.

Just a quick note - in case you haven't checked Barbara's website lately,
she's got another mp3 up, a couple new photos (looks like the main photo changes
daily), and on the news page, a link to some soap opera cds that Barbara's
featured on. I clicked around the soap cds and it looks like Baby is on one of
them and a new song that she wrote with Terry Silverlight called True. I just
ordered them!

Dear Subscriber,

Hi there Everybody,

It's been a long time since I've gotten in touch. I just got back from a trip
to Nashville where I got to hang with some amazing songwriters, as well as my
friends Lydia and Merlin (from Performing Songwriter Magazine). It was quite
a retreat for me, and I'm glad to have started on some new material. Now I'm
happily back home, enjoying this sparkling Fall weather, and putting in some
time in my new "home studio." (I managed to move some toys and art supplies and
various assorted drum parts out of the spare room to set up shop.)

I also recently played a lovely private show up in New Hampshire, and got to
dust off some old songs that were special requests from the Birthday Girl.
I've done several of these types of shows over the past few years, and they are
really surprisingly delightful. So, if I never seem to make it to your area -
which is most everywhere!- you may want to consider hosting your own private
concert. All you have to do is ask! I may just be able to swing it, on - as my
host in NH dubbed it- my "great basements of suburbia" tour.

Hope to see some of you out at this show. It will be great good fun to play
with a band like this! Check out the details at this link (but please note the
venue has changed to the location listed below).

http://www.patiorecords.com/musicfest2004.html Saturday, October 23rd 7:30PM
Music Fest 2004 McDevitt Middle School Auditorium 75 Church Street Waltham, MA
For advance tickets, please email musicfest@..., or call and
leave a message for Terry Eagan at 781-894-0706. All ticket proceeds will be
donated to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Foundation towards a future garden
patio adjoining the treatment facility in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Please join Amy Fairchild, Georgette Fry, Tannis Slimmon, Rick Fines and me
for a memorable musical evening!

Take care all,

Barbara

I just stumbled upon this... Barbara will be playing the Rock for
RAINN show in Boston on Sept 25! Details are below but if anyone is
going and can tape it, I'd be thrilled!

RAINN, The Rape Abuse Incest National Network. RAINN is the non
profit organization that runs the national rape crisis hotline (1-800-
656-HOPE). RAINN receives no government funding and relies entirely
on contributions from individuals and corporations. We have held
fundraisers in 2001 and 2002, raising over $10,000 and spreading
awareness of RAINN.

This year proceeds will also benefit Jane Doe Inc.'s Save
Massachusett's Rape Crisis Center Campaign.

latest note from Barbara:
Hi!
It's been a long time. Thanks for signing up on this list. You know what to
do if you need to be removed! (Just let us know.)I just wanted to say hi and
to let you know about a few upcoming shows in Massachusetts. This Saturday
I'll be at The New Song Folk Club here's the info:

March 8th at The Gallery Cafe:
685 North Bedford St. (Rt. 18)
E. Bridgewater, MA

Scott Cannon opens
Tickets are $9

Next month I will be at the new Capo's in Lowell.
Friday April 4th
98 Middle Street, Lowell
978.453.5755
http://www.caposfolk.com

In May and June, I'll be close to home in Cambridge.
Saturday, May 3 I'll be at the Nameless Coffeehouse in Harvard Square (in the
church across from the movie theater) for their anniversary benefit show
along with Linda Sharar, Oen Kennedy, and the "avant-folk duo" Danzig &
Woolley.

Saturday June 7th I'll return to Club Passim.
47 Palmer Street, Harvard Square
617-492-5300
http://www.clubpassim.org

I hope to see some of you out there! I have been basically "retired" except
for writing and co-writing some new songs, some of which have been featured
on TV several times, and some I hope to record. I am woefully behind on my
web site, having let it lapse into near obsolescence. I do hope to get some
news up there someday, and fill the world in on the current state of my
haircuts and my beautiful babies (now aged 6 and 1!) Thanks for your
patience.

It's always good to hear from some of you, thanks for keeping in touch. I was
invited to sing at a birthday party in December, and had a great time. (Happy
40th to Carla!) If anyone would like to inquire about private house concerts,
please feel free to email me. It just might be do-able!

Take care, and stay warm. Think crocuses! Green buds on trees! Days above 30
degrees!
Barbara

Hi Everybody,

First, sorry for the confusion. Due to the last-minute nature of my
previous e-mail update, my husband Phil rushed it out for me without
double-checking my schedule - he said the July show would be my last
Boston area appearance. In fact, I have 3 more shows on the books before
taking my 2nd-Child Sabbatical.

Second, I wanted to let you all know about the CD sale in plenty of time
for you early Holiday Shoppers (ha!) All BK CD's are only $10 (actually,
$9.99!) and if you want to pick up all 4 titles including the CD re-master
of my original full-length cassette recording "Live," you can do so for
$30 at www.cdfreedom.com or 1-800-937-3397.

Next, the schedule:
Saturday September 15th 8m Club Passim, Harvard Square 617-492-7679.
With our buddy Jeff Cohen of Pancho's Lament as special guest opener. His
song "Truth About Romeo" is the theme to the tv show Jack and Jill, and he
co-wrote the Evan and Jaron hit "Crazy For This Girl." Super nice guy and
great songs.

Saturday October 13th 8pm South Church, 292 State St., Portsmouth NH
603-436-4762 (or contact greenmolly@...).
This show is a benefit and will feature our buddy Todd Thibaud as special
guest opener; another super-nice-guy and great-songwriter and wicked funny
too. We will be sharing our awesome band and singing together a bit too.
Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at Bull Moose Music in Portsmouth,
Stroudwater Books in Dover, Water Street Books in Exeter, Brooks Pharmacy
in Durham, or the South Church office. Here is a word from the folks at
South Church:
"South Church affirms the worth and dignity of all people. South Church is
a place where we bring our rich diversity of experience together in quest
for meaning and connection. Ours is a relational faith and though we may
think differently, we walk together, we work together and play together.
The South Church Concert Series 2001 is a nonprofit fund-raising effort.
100 percent of proceeds generated from these concerts will be donated to
the general operating fund of South Church."

Saturday November 17th 8pm Circle Of Friends Coffeehouse, Franklin MA
508-528-2541.
Daryl Purpose, OK, yes, another super-sweet guy with great songs, and A
Past (come and find out...) will be sharing the bill with me.

Lastly, it's been great hearing from some of you from time to time. I
appreciate all the notes and inquiries about whether I'll be visiting your
town anytime soon, and in some ways am very sad I won't be. I will try to
keep in touch however, and will make a serious effort to stay somewhat
more current at the website. I continue to have songs included now and
again on tv and possibly some upcoming movies and so maybe you'll hear me
out there haunting you anyway! Also, a couple of the new songs I've
co-written have received some very cool publishing interest, so who knows,
you may hear my words in someone else's voice someday soon, perhaps with a
Nashville twang. As I turn my intention toward nesting this coming fall
and winter season, I wish for all of you the comfort, joy, sense of
purpose, and the tiny flutter
of Life inside (metaphorically in any case!) that I am feeling now at this
wonderful time.

Hope to see some of you out there!
Be well, and keep in touch.

Hi! I'm very excited to be hitting the road soon! Please check on the
dates below and see if you or your friends can come on out to a show
somewhere! I'm also very excited that my new CD "Barbara Kessler" is now
starting to get airplay around the country and is now available at stores!
All these exclamation points! You can find them at Borders Books and Music
as well as fun and funky independent record stores around the country,
such as Bionic in southern California, Homer's in Nebraska, Music
Millennium in Oregon, Schoolkids in North Carolina among others. You can
check www.cimsmusic.com to find the stores near you – they are featuring
"Barbara Kessler" in their listening stations for the month of September.
(My first two records are on order and will soon be available at these
outlets as well.) Thanks to Reg and Don at CIMS and the Redeye
Distribution team for helping out my "cottage industry!"

Thanks also to Lisa in California who started this BK discussion e-list:
www.egroups.com/community/barbarakessler
She also has this swell little page on me where you can find BK bootlegs.
http://members.aol.com/sufisdance/BK.htm

Wow. I'm being discussed and bootlegged. I like it.

Hey, I just got contacted to do an interview with JAM magazine in Italy –
they will be featuring me in their October issue – molto bene, no? The
record is now being distributed there, as well. Who knows, I may get to
tour there yet! Thanks for all your help, Mauro!
Thanks to Barbara at Heavy Hitters for getting me some TV time! The songs
Baby and Bridge Mix and Sense of Possibility (co-written with my album
producer, Adam Steinberg) have been used on Jag, Passions, and One Life To
Live. I already told you about Car Talk… show #26 used my song Take a
Ride. Too much fun.

Well, thanks to all of you for your support, and I hope to see you out
there!

from Barbara's e-mail announcement:

Hi everyone,
Welcome to all the new folks on the list!
I will list the dates first, then a quick hello and catch-up.

Tuesday, August 1st 8:30pm
Johnny D's, Somerville MA
617-776-2004
Fishman Transducer's hosts the night in honor of their 20th anniversary of
making acoustic instruments sound GREAT when plugged in (including mine)!
It
will be me and my buddy Jennifer Kimball splitting the night with our
bands
and singing together!
Best of all, it's FREE (thanks, Fishman) My friends Bob Malone and Shecky
will be sitting in, along with my wonderful band Phil Antoniades on drums,
Jeff St. Pierre on bass and Thomas Juliano on guitar.

Thursday, August 10th 9pm (don't be late!)
Seven Stages, Euclid Ave, Atlanta GA
404-522-0911
Band showcase during the Atlantis Music Conference

Sunday, August 13th
Eddie's Attic, 515 B North McDonough, Decatur GA
404-377-4976
Solo-songwriter showcase night hosted by Kristen Hall also including
Michelle
Malone, Caroline Aiken, Kristian Bush, Matthew Kahler, Sam Shaber and
possibly others - ohmoygawd as we say on Long Island (or oh my guh-ness as
my
3 year old daughter says)

Saturday, August 19th 8pm
The Valley Players Theater, Route 100, Waitsfield VT
802-496-8910
This will be a split bill with our friend Todd Thibaud (another stop on
our
Two Songwriters, One Band tour) and is part of some big arts festival
going
on there then. The radio stations WGDR and WNCS already have my new record
and are spinning it and talking about the show - feel free to phone in
requests!!! 877 FMPOINT or WGDR at 802-454-7762.

Thanks for all the inquiries regarding the Midwest tour mid-September.
Dates
are being worked out for Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Louisville,
Terre
Haute, Champaign, Omaha, Chicago, Ann Arbor, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia.
The record, "Barbara Kessler," is being distributed nationally starting
the
end of August and sent to radio starting this week. Even if club dates
aren't
booked, I will most likely be visiting many more areas to perform
in-stores
and radio interviews. I will update my website and this list as things
come
together.

Response to the record has been so positive, I'm very excited to finally
be
"officially releasing" it. Already, the track "Bridge Mix" has been used
in
the national daytime television drama "Passions." How weird is that. I
love
it, though I've never seen the show... Oh, and recently I was informed at
a
show (thanks John, Debbie, and Emily!) that my song "Take a Ride" was
featured on NPR's car talk! Now that I was bummed to miss -- and I'm a
regular Click and Clack fan.

Soon there will be BK Sampler Singles available to send to friends if
you'd
like when you order my CD at my website or at www.cdfreedom.com. It will
include a couple of tracks from my previous two albums as well as a couple
of
new ones from Barbara Kessler. (That's the odd thing about a self-titled
release, you have to keep saying your own name.) You can also order at
1-800-937-3397.

I feel there are other things I wanted to tell you, but it's so late and
so
much to do in order to ACTUALLY get all this done. I appreciate having
understanding supporters like you! Especially those of you in my
year-that-never-ends Singles Club - a new CD will be going out shortly
(some
surprises on it) and no, you don't need to send any new subscription
money.

Looking forward to sharing more music with you, enjoy the rest of summer!
Stay well,

bk

reflection and wry, girlish reminiscence, sung in an airy voice brimming
with
personality." Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

hi everyone! I've had a few people unsub :( (yeah, I know there's not much
discussion...) so I thought I'd post a little note saying hi and letting you
know what Barbara is up to..

Barbara is currently out in San Francisco vacationing with Phil and Emilia at
Phil's parents' house :) I was trying to harass her into playing a gig while
she was out here but since it was such a last minute trip, she wasn't able to
set anything up.. I almost had her booked to play in my living room in
Gilroy, but since it's a little off the map and kinda far from the Bay Area
(where she's played previously) she decided not to come down. And she called
me at home to tell me that :) anyway, she's supposed to eventually come back
out here and I've given her the names of a few house concert venues in
Berkeley so hopefully we'll see her out her soon.

Anyway, if you don't have her new album, it's great :) and her website was
redesigned a little while ago and includes lyrics to the new cd, so check
that out for those and some tour dates.

Discuss!

:) Lisa

hey all - this is the update from Barbara...I'm psyched to be able to hear
some of the shows on the net :) yay! and now I have to go look at the new
site... please go see BK live and tell me about it so I can live
vicariously...

---
Hi all,
I am teary, and joyful at once - listening to Jennifer Kimball's "Veering
From The Wave," a marvelous album, and preparing to play and sing with her
tonight at the Kendall Cafe, 9pm, the second show of my month-long
residency
there. That's right, I'm songwriter-in-residence there every Monday in
May,
and in New York City every Wednesday at The Living Room. (7pm)

For those of you outside Boston, feel free to check out the show,
streaming
live (huh?) unfathomably (to me) from www.radioboston.com. Really!

The *Flash* website is finally done, and I've been getting great feedback
from folks, but still need to spread the word.
http://www.barbarakessler.com/flash/ Make sure your volume is turned up!
As
of now, that is the only place to get the new record, although it will be
in
Newbury Comics by the end of this week, for you New Englanders, and will
be
distributed soon (our scheduled "official release date" is September 5).

There will be a feature on me in this week's Boston Globe (I think this
Friday...) and it's just in time to help me spread the word about this
wonderful concert and benefit, CD. The concert is this Sunday, May 14th
7pm -
Mother's Day at the Somerville Theater and features me plus these other
mom
songwriters: Mary Lou Lord, Jan Luby, Lori McKenna, and Ramona Silver. It
is
the official release show for the CD I produced called Hope: Mothers
Helping
Mothers. I'm psyched to play a show with these incredible women, and to
share
a backstage area with some other little kids! The CD will also be
available
at www.barbarakessler.com and at Newbury Comics. Here is the track
listing:

HOPE Mothers Helping Mothers
Diane Zeigler - I Know My Baby's Cry
Sara Hickman - It's Alright
Laurie McClain - Only Four
Ramona Silver - Honeydew
Lori McKenna - Hardly Speaking a Word
Suzzy Roche - Breathing
Ashley Cleveland - There Goes My Baby
Barbara Kessler - Persephone
Eliza Gilkyson - Lantern
Karen Taylor-Good - Heart of My Heart (Where Did You Go)
Rachel Bissex - Dancing With My Mother
Jan Luby - Ordinary
Tish Hinojosa - Baby Believe

The organization it benefits is called Project Hope and they state:
Project Hope shelters mothers and children, operates programs that move
families to economic stability, and works with them to advocate for
systemic
change to support families and end family homelessness. Project Hope
believes there is an inherent potential in every human being and is
working
with families to bring forth that potential.

It has been a pleasure listening to songs by other mothers and both
reliving
and anticipating the certain joys, triumphs, and trials of mothering.
There
were many more submissions than I could ultimately use, and contact has
been
positive with even more "famous" songwriting moms, so there could very
definitely be a volume 2.

Thanks so much for your support and enthusiasm, and I look forward to
hopefully get out to the other parts of the country (and beyond!) not
listed
here. There are some other shows I'd like to tell you about:

5/13 The Reedy River Folk Festival
Brashier Campus of Greenville Technical College
Simpsonville, SC http://reedyriverfolkfestival.web.com
tickets at Horizon records: 864-235-7922, TNT Music 864-962-0775
with one of my all-time idols! Karla Bonoff! Cliff Eberhardt (who sang on
my
first record, Stranger to this Land) Dogwood Moon, Jack Williams, and
others...
5/14 Somerville Theater (see above)
5/20 Acoustic Cafe, 2926 Fairfield Ave, Bridgeport, CT 203-335-3655 with
band!
6/20 Lizard Lounge, 1667 Mass Ave. Cambridge 617-547-0759 with band and
Todd
Thibaud!

Tours are being planned for the West coast, and the Midwest. Please feel
free
to suggest any venues you know about, including house concerts. Thanks. I
hope you're enjoying spring. It is going to be around 90 f degrees again
here
today.

"Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel
and kiss the ground." RUMI

Be well,
Barbara
