We have been using it in the Northeastern District, and chapters use it.
Last Fall, when something went wrong on OUR server, there wasnobody to help
figure it out. The only way to fix it was to completely re-=install the
server software from ground up. That worked, but caused a lot of grief.
Last weekend, when I went to test it for a script on the NED server, the XML
errored out. The error message was from the Kenosha server. Had anyone ELSE
tried to use it, I would have HEARD it from themabout the NED server being
down...... And any effort to explain the situation is useless, since in
general, people want to believe that my server is not reliable (despite the
fact that it has been up 98% of the time for about 8 years). When there were
problems with routers in between source and desitination, my server was
blamed. People don't "See" the Kenosha server or the servers en route to our
server, so they will always blame your server, and no amount of explanation
will convince them otherwise - indeed, I believe they will adjust their
trust in YOU downward.
With a local login, you have better control over the resources. So we will
be totally replacing the NED site with a Cold Fusion site. The data will be
refreshed periodically as it is now. For the login, we wqill allow everybody
to change their login password, so if they want, they can make it match
their Kenosha login. This wil l also enable a host of other super options.
Our plan is to have a Schools registration, Contest Registratsion(?), an
Activity Calendar that allows the upload of the Consent Calendar for an
event, local chapter listings, etc. Furthermore, since we can thencontrol
the login, we can have different group priviledges. That way, some can have
administrative privliedges. And that way, the webmaster can get out of the
business of being the conduit for all information going onto the page. It
can become a TEAM effort.
What we will lose, unless I can figure out a workaround, is the Society
options on the NED Member page. They haven't LOST them since they can log
into the Kenosha site for those. It might even be possible to arrange is so
that if we link out to the Kenosha member-only site, they will not have to
log in.
Well, that was a long answer.
The short of it......
It is quite reliable, except for a few times when it has gone down for a
while - one time for a whole weekend, right in the middle of a season where
men were trying to log in to get to member information for something like
COTS registrations. It is a great idea, but it is not 100% in my opinion.

Does anyone know how reliable the member login system will be with
its
XML-RPC now that Scott Hoge is gone? Anyone still using it?
I never got around to implementing it, but I now have a chapter
that's
interested in using it, but with Scott gone I have no idea how
reliable it is now or in the future....
Anyone?

I am using just the member login part of the package, not the download part,
and it is still working. If you have problems, send a message to Don
Harris.
