true story bambi. I just had bought a national res ukulele at hilo music and
the wife was hungry so we spotted a KFC and got lunch.
I got done first so I started playing it when the manager came out and asked
if I knew that song, so we sang it and she told me the story.

Queen lilokalani wrote this mele in the late 1800's
after she sign the U.S. turn over of her kingdom.
it is said that at her home in what is now Waikiki
she spyed her handmaid out in the gardens giving her lover
a good nite kiss.
missing the love she shared with her husband John Dominis
she wrote the words of this song, now at that time the only
western music was the songs that the missionaires had sung
so if you listen to the verse it sounds like "how great thou art"
this also is the time of the royal bandmaster John Berger so most
songs sound like german marches, not untill 1917 did we hear
songs that sound hawaiian.

Hi all. New to the group, and new to ukes. I'm a working drummer gone
to the dark side. Besides, maybe it'll help my ear for tunes, I gotta
sing backup pretty often.
Started with a Silvertone. Not bad for the price, you didn't expect a
Strat. Picked up a Gretsch off Fleabay. Decent price, compared to a
friends' vintage Martin! Much better. Chords aren't exactly flowing,
but easier, and cleaner. Besides, I can't afford vintage Gretsch drums.
They're *really* outta line. Main set's a '68 Ludwig.
It came with older, unknown clear strings. They seem ok, the A string
seems a little dead, but that seems to be what that string sounds like
on other ukes. Is it worth changing them out? One school seems to
play'em 'till they break. I've also heard really good things about
Aquila Nyguts. Any comments?
Cleaning/polish. It's an oldie in good shape. don't wanna screw it up.
I've heard lemon oil is the thing to use. Others push {expensive}
guitar polishes. It's mahogany. Again, help?!

      Thanks, Bill D.

Hi Bill,

Go ahead and change the strings.  It's a relatively cheap investment, and could make a significant improvement.  I really like the sound and feel of Nylgut strings.  You might want to try them on your Silvertone as well.  If you go to the Fleamarketmusic.com bulletin board and do a search on "strings" you'll find a lot of discussion and differing opinions.

I used "Old English" to clean up an old Harmony Baritone, and it worked great.  I think that is the same as Lemon Oil.

Good Luck!

Lisa

It is great to see so many different and interesting ukulele groups
online. I teach and play ukulele in San Antonio, and we will be
having our 4th annual festival in April. More later.

In keeping with the season, I am offering a couple of fun-da-mental
songs. Some in English and Hawaiian.

Hope everyone had a great T-day.

Hi all, from the central coast of Cali. It's cold and wet here, posted
an arrangement of "Help me Rhonda" to bring back summer! Off to the
local uke shop {alternatetunings.com}. Mike's a great guy, always a
help. Played some Nationals, now I really want a resonator uke. Really
liked the mahogany bodied one. The brass one was cool, too. Anybody out
there got a used reso f.s.? Anyone played one of Johnson copies?
They're a bunch cheaper, but none around here to try.
    Thanks and aloha, Bill D.
