I just wanted to tell you that I went to this show at the First Unitarian Church
last Friday night. Thanks to this site/post for the info about it or I wouldn't
have known.
I live in California but was back in Massachusetts for the week for work. I
actually thought of going to his earlier show at the Iron Horse but I had jet
lag and it was too far away for a Sunday night when I was already trying to
overcome a three hour time difference.
Friday it turned out was not easy either. Work ran late and I ended up skipping
dinner and driving to places I've never been in the dark and a light rain. I
ended up calling my wife back home to give me directions via Mapquest and
arrived with two minutes to spare. The map showed two Littleton's, one on each
side of the interstate.
It was a great experience. Little New England town, in an old historic church,
the type you see on postcards. A small church but a pretty good crowd. I'd
seen Bill 11 years earlier and everyone was older....Bill, the audience,
me.....but the voice was the same.
First to perform as a young women named Karaugh Brown, http://karaughbrown.com
who's recent CD was produced by Bill Morrissey. She reminded me a little of
Shawn Colvin. Interesting lyrics of some of her songs. Soulful.
Then there was a break and the organizers sold apple cider and muffins and
cookies and CDs and such. Cider and a cookie would be my dinner that
night.....and a few CDs.
After the 20 minute break, Bill on stage/alter and sang a song, then was joined
by fellow New Hampshire musicians Seth Austen and Beverly Woods
http://www.sethausten.com/ . In my opinion Bill seemed to feed off playing
with them. I certainly enjoyed the trio. Bill joked that he was glad the New
Hampshire primary was over with because he was tired of waking up every morning
to find John Kerry shoveling his driveway. I wish I could remember all the
other little one liners he threw at us that night, but that's one of the best
things about live folk music that too often gets left out in CDs.....all those
little stories or jokes between songs. I guess Bill grew up nearby as they
mentioned that someone in the audience went to school with him.
Seth Austen impressed me as well with the numerous instruments he played to the
different Bill Morrissey songs. I, who play no instruments at all was in awe.
By the way, the cover that Lucy Kaplansky (who was also playing nearby that
night) sings that Don just mentioned in his post, well, Bill did mention that
and then sang it. He ended the night with "Birches".
After the show Bill was available to anyone who wandered in the back and so I
promptly went back there and got him to autograph my CDs. I wish I'd brought a
camera but more importantly I have a great memory of that night. It was more
than worth waiting until Saturday to fly back home.
People in New England are lucky. They have singer/songwriters like Bill
Morrissey and a long list of others performing in their backyard almost any
given week. What is there about that area that is filled with places to see
these artists?

Subject: [Birches] Bill Morrissey Trio at Littleton, MA
Hi Everyone:
Bill Morrissey Trio alert:
Bill will be playing with back up musicians at the Firehouse Coffeehouse at
First Unitarian Church in Littleton, MA on Friday night (March 5th). Then,
the next Bill Morrissey Trio performance is at the Mountain Culture Festival
in Hunter, NY on July 10th.
That's all we've booked with the trio for the rest of the year. And, no band
gigs are currently booked. If that changes, I will let you know.
Best,
Ellen Karas
