On Saturday 4th July, I travelled to my hometown of Grimsby, to see the tribute band RAINBOW BAND play at Yardbirds. As I turned into the top of street where the venue is located, the song 16th century Greensleeves could be easily heard blasting out of the venue, as the band performed its soundcheck.
I had my new mobile phone with me so decided to put its video camera to use!
After the soundcheck, I talked to Spyder, who is the chief RAINBOW RISING roadie (as I call him).
He explained that he is co-organising the Rock and Bike Festival 2009-07-05 (17 – 19 July)

RAINBOW RISING is now scheduled to appear on Saturday 18th July (at the event) as the immediate support to the headline band THE LEVELLERS.
The event is charitable, in that, after it has covered its expenses, all remaining proceeds will be donated to charity; Parkinson’s Disease, East Midlands Air Ambulance, Premature Babies Unit, MacMillan Cancer Support plus smaller local charities. The venue is a professional site, with a 25m wide main stage and a 28kw PA rig. There will also be a separate indoor arena with another smaller stage. There is also a Kids Zone with CRBS-checked staff, painting, arts, crafts, rides and an eight-lane racetrack.
After talking with Spyder, there was chance to talk to the rest of the band and other people whom I know before the show was due to start.
I recorded the first song from the back of the venue but then decided to sit next to Spyder for the rest of the gig. The audience seemed very familiar with the songs and hopefully (despite the limited quality of my phone camera video) you will be able to see the enthusiastic response to the show. My friend Jason frost
Had driven up from Norfolk to see the show and after the gig he said:
"I have been a long-term Ritchie Blackmore fan and have seen recent video footage of OVER THE RAINBOW but for me, RAINBOW RISING puts on a far more consistent and professional show. Raggie handles the vocals very well on all compositions and guitarist Barry is very good. You can tell by the way that Barry plays that he is very passionate about the music and is totally inspired by the original Blackmore licks and music that he is trying to do justice to, in his performance.
You can easily tell that the whole band are really into it; they are each very passionate about it and this helps to unite them as a band. For me, they help to keep the RAINBOW musical dream alive. It is not every bar that you can walk into and see a rock band playing the music of RAINBOW. I have travelled 110 miles today, in the hope of being blown away by the music of Ritchie Blackmore. The inclusion of Jealous Lover was a bit of a surprise to me, as I prefer the Dio era myself but all the musical line-ups of the original RAINBOW band were good. It was good to see that represented in the show tonight – definitely".
