Does anyone have any idea why all of a sudden out of nowhere a track would lose volume on its' own? This is pre-bouncing and post bouncing. A track (guitar) that had previously sounded just fine on numerous playbacks all of a sudden takes a noticeable volume drop about 20 seconds into the song and stays at the volume for the rest of the song. Any ideas as to why? Besides re-recording, what might have gone wrong? Is there a problem with my BR-600?

Thanks for the advice/thoughts/help....

Peace

I've finally gotten to the point where I  can record reasonably good stuff on the BR864, and now I can't get it onto the computer. The manual for the wave converter says connect the recorder to the computer via USB and it will show up on "my computer". It doesn't. I've confirmed that the cable is OK. WTF?

You need to push the USB button and then select the BACKUP function.

This guide explains it in detail:

Chris-

thanks for the quick response; I had just figured that out when i got your note. (facepalm!)

I should have been more clear about what my objective is. I have recorded a reasonable version of a song on the 864. I would like to move that song onto my computer. can i assume that this is possible? the converter appears to move each individual track discretely, so i have all four INDIVIDUAL tracks on my computer, which is NOT what I want, as this is useless. I'd like to be able to burn the song to disc, email it etc.

I've successfully backed the file up onto my computer, but I want to convert it to a wave file I can use. Is this possible?

you need to create a stereo mix-down of your tracks, and optionally
"master" it. This is what the "Bounce" and "Master" modes of the BR-600
are for.

The general procedure is this: with the Bounce mode you mix down all
your individual tracks on to one stereo track on track 7/8 and in Master
mode you apply the master effects to this stereo mix down, thereby
bringing it up to nominal level and enhancing it through the use of EQ,
multi-band compressor and limiter.

Mastering is entirely optional, but you need at least to mix down your
tracks to a stereo track to be able to export your song as such to your
computer.

You could alternatively export all your individual tracks to the
computer and do the mix down with a software like audacity or a digital
audio workstation, but this is an advanced topic, which I will not delve
into here.

For details about using the Bounce mode, please check the manual. If you
still have questions, please don't hesitate to ask for advice here.

Hi Chris-

I should preface this by saying that I am, in fact, NOT a moron, although considering the trouble I've had trying to record a song on a digital recorder and get said song to my computer, I sure feel like one!

I bounced the four tracks to two. I mastered it. I made note of the V tracks to which it was saved. When i went to "convert" it to a Wav file, it was nowhere to be found. the same version of the song, on four tracks, is the only choice for transfer to the computer. I'm fully expecting to be told I'm on Candid Camera and that the Boss 864 is just a cruel joke.

seriously, people record stuff with these boxes all the time. How can it be that this is so difficult?

so are you saying that when you select the song in the wave converter,
only four tracks show up in green? To which V-Track did you bounce your
mix down? I'm not sure how this works on a BR-864, I only have a BR-600,
but have you checked the V-tracks directly on the device itself, i.e. do
the tracks to which bounced the mix-down show up as being used?

Are you sure you hit record when doing the bounce and then the
mastering, not just play?

Anyway, if your mix-down is nowhere to be found, but you still have the
four individual tracks, just do the bouncing and mastering again, and
make sure at each step to check that you git the results you expected...

FIXED! If I had known that the 864 is fine for recording but that a different software package would be necessary for the creation of a usable WAV or mp3 file, I would have been cranking out CDs a long time ago. Audacity seems perfectly suited for what I'm trying to do.

Actually, Dave, you can create WAV files on the BR-864 without any additional software. See pages 161-163 of the BR-864 Owner's Manual. The only thing you can't do without additional software is convert to MP3, but that's easily done on the computer.

I prefer to use the BR Wave Converter to convert my BR-864 tracks to WAV format because:

1) It's faster. The BR-864, like most other BRs, uses USB 1.1 which is quite slow. But, if you remove the CompactFlash card from your BR-864 and insert it into a USB 2.0 card reader attached to your computer, the BR Wave Converter will treat your card reader as if it's a BR and allow you to convert your tracks to WAV format much faster. Also, the processor in your computer is probably much faster than the processor in the BR-864.

2) With the BR Wave Converter, you can convert your tracks to WAV format even if the card is filled to capacity. But if you convert on the BR-864 instead, this isn't possible because the card must always have enough free space available to hold the WAV files.

3) The graphical interface of the BR Wave Converter is easier to use than the BR-864's small display and menus.

I have had  lots of success using my BR864 (now BR600) in concert with Audacity
All the music here  http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=606123  was recorded on a BR recorder transfereed to PC, then mixed and rendered with Audacity. A simple process that gives excellent results.

I can create one WAV file for each track, but I want to create a WAV file that has all the tracks synched, the way i recorded it. Apparently the way to do this is to mix down to two tracks, then master and export. I tried that, and have no idea where the song I "mastered" is. I'm kind of sick and tired of wrestling with this thing, and now that I've found a very easy method of creating CDs I'm putting the 864 manual away for good.

You're right, that's the procedure in general.

> I tried that, and have no idea where the song I "mastered" is.

It should be on one of the V-tracks of track 7/8. To be exact, on the
V-track, which you select in step 3-5 when you have entered mastering
mode (see page 65 of the manual). If it isn't there, you probably just
forgot to actually record when mastering. I might state the obvious, but
when doing the mix-down and the mastering, you actually have to play
back AND record the whole song, it's not something that happens
automagically or in the background when you enter bounce or mastering mode.

Anyway, if you created a mix-down before mastering, which is is a
necessity, you should have at least this stereo mix-down on some track.
If this isn't there, you could not even have mastered your song.

C'mon! I thought you said yourself, you're not a moron. It's not that
hard. The mastering effects on the BR are actually not half bad and
really help to enhance the quality of your tracks - provided the
recorded material is any good ;).

Chris-

yeah, I'm really not bad, generally speaking, with computerized stuff. I just have a blind spot, I suppose, from having things so easy back in the days of Portastudios, where i could record on three tracks, bounce to the fourth, re-record and port it all to a two-track in an afternoon. Of course the results were hideous, but that was for a variety of reasons.

HOWEVER, now that i have an EASY way to do what I'm trying to do, there's no pressure, and I will take the time to learn how to do it right. I know in my heart that you are correct, that it is NOT that hard. On the other hand, maybe i just want to prove that I'm not deluding myself when I claim, with such certainty, that i am not a moron;-)

thanks for the help-

That's cool! You're not lost to the dark side of the force yet then ;)
Use the force of the manual! ;) Honestly, you decide how you work best

I would like to prchase a footswitch for my BR600 to turn the record function on
and off. Do I need a momentary or latching or does it matter?

BOSS/Roland recommends using a FS-5U (see page 192 of the manual):

http://www.roland.com/products/en/FS-5U/

It's a momentary switch. Any switch of this type should work even a
keyboard sustain pedal switch. Most of these have a switch to toggle
between normally open or normally closed.

Hi guys, I'm a Br-600 owner for 4 years, and I made a careless mistake yesterday
I'm hoping is easily fixable.

I was exporting tracks to my computer (not using the WAV converter). Instead of
opening the USB folder and dragging T1V3 to my desktop, I inadvertently dragged
the whole USB folder to my desktop...then opened it and exported my track. I
noticed later there was a USB folder still on my desktop that's not usually
there.

I haven't been able to export or import with this card ever since, though other
cards work fine. I'm thinking the USB folder on my desktop needs to go back to
the first compactflash card somehow...is that correct?...if so, does anybody
know a way to do this?

If it's possible, I'd prefer a method that does not use the WAV converter...I
don't have it installed, nor do I have a card reader.

Thanks for any info...

You need to format the card first then move it over..

NO! No need to format the CF card! That would delete all the songs you
currently have on that card.

Just create an empty folder called "USB" (all upper case) within the
"ROLAND" folder on the card with the windows explorer on your computer.

For reference, the filesystem structure on your CF card should look like
this (trailing slash denotes a folder):

ROLAND/
     BR0/
	 DISKINF2.BR0
         SONG0001.BR0/
             ...
         SONG0002.BR0/
         ...
         SONG000n.BR0/
     TONELOAD/
     SMF/
     USB/

Yes, I read your message and the original post. I still say, based on
the information present, that formatting the card should not be
necessary or might be even harmful if he still has track data on it that
he might want to keep.

Thanks for the responses...I think I'd like to try it without formatting it.

Chris, how would I actually get the folder back on the card? When I hit "USB"
and then "import", it asks for a track to assign it to. I don't know of another
way to get it in there.

After connecting the BR going to USB, select BACKUP instead of IMPORT
and hit enter. Then a file manager window should open on your computer's
desktop, i.e. a windows explorer window if your on windows or a filer
window if you're on OS X. If it doesn't, check for a new drive icon
called "BR-600" on the desktop or under "My computer".

Then use the facilities of your computer to open the ROLAND folder on
this drive and create the USB folder in it. When you're done, use the
right click menu on the drive icon to disconnect the drive and then hit
the "EXIT" button the BR.

You obviously have more information on this matter or you are reading
something from his posts that I wasn't able to.

Anyway, I gave my advice on what I think is worth trying. It's the OPs
choice to follow it or yours, so I will be silent about this matter from
now on.

Thanks Chris...hitting 'Backup' was the key move...I actually had one too many
USB folders there (!), so I deleted one, figured the rest out, and it worked.
Now I can import and export tracks again.

Btw, your instinct was correct...I still had tracks I wanted to save before I
wiped the card. I've learned a lot from you and 64 Gtrs on this forum...thanks
again for the info!

Rick
