over. It was on a loop, so this happened every hour or so. Wow all the
memories are flowing back into my head. Anyway. If anyone knows where
I can get an audio or video of this concert it would greatly be

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I'm glad we're able to resurrect your memories of the Jam. I bet when they finally opened up the gates you realized where the Stage was right away :-)

May I suggest you enlarge the Cover Photo to see some real neat stuff
in there. You'll see close-ups of people, the massive Stage, the
equipment in the back, the worktrucks...Everyone upfront leaning
towards the Stage is a thrilling site to behold.

I'm trying to get to the "moderate" feature, as I've noticed a few spam
messages lately. The Yahoo Features aren't that user friendly unless
you're well-versed in them, so I hope I did it right. Let's hope it
works. I'd rather have no messages than SPAM messages on California_Jam.

the air? watching 10,000 back lit one gallon jugs spinning through the night,
with water spilling out was one of the most awesome visuals i've ever seen.

Veru Cool to find ya all. I was at CalJam in '74 and drove a mixed
group of six friends to Onatrio at dawn in my boat-sized 1962 Mercury
Monterey. I can't remember who I took, in fact, I can't remember many
segments of the event except total astonishment. I believe I took
some "medicine" that may have impaired my 17 year old brain. We made
camp on the higher level to the north looking down into the vast
valley of morphing bodies wandering through the speaker towers. It
was cool in the morning, and I was obsessed with wearing my thick
Navy Pee-coat with no shirt beneath, just tattered levi's and
sandals. My hair was the longest of my life, perfect for Costa
Mesa/Newport beach life I lived. My friends watched the camp as I
wondered off to explore this temporal world buzz with activity. I was
alone ( I think )and the rest were coupled up.
My medicine kicked in about 10:23 am, maybe Rare Earth was playing I
think. Now I regret the mind-altering intake, because the event was
staggeringly momentous. I drank water like a sponge and burned up in
my coat. I stood in a portapotty line for 33 minutes, a long queue to
rival any E-ticket ride at Disneyland, and noticed couple going in
together to relieve themselves in ways I coul;dn't concieve and I
hope they didn't concieve. Although, being genetically created at
CALJAM would be notable. That child would be about 32 years old now??
I remember being nearly incapable of urinating due to substance
conflicts. Some dude banged on the door and asked if I was alright. I
finished and stepped out and looked like I had been in a sauna,
dripping sweat. I remember saying "Is the 8th floor Kitchen Products
department?" and got a laugh.
I made it center crowd between the Back speakers and stage, on the
south side of the chain link alley they built. I ended up in the
middle of a large group of groovin' black folk who accepted me into
their mid-field party as Earth Wind and Fire playing something about
the Sun. I danced with an awesome black chick as only a funky white
boy can. They were gems to me. I finally made it back to my camp
after hours of crowd walking and listening. I knew the whole layout
and guided them to every needed facility. Then I'm sure the MC said
he was bringing LINDA LOVELACE to the microphone? I couldn't believe
it. Was that real?
Later, I did force my way to the front chain link fence to get close
to Black Sabbath's set. BAD CHOICE. My skinny little body was impaled
upon the rusted chain link during all their songs. I had a diamond
mesh impression pressed deeply into my chest, which is why I believe
I didn't grow chest hair until 30 years old. I sang along but
couldn't hear myself from the ringing. Today I am 60 percent deaf,

radio nowadays ) and will try to remember more. I just met a
wonderful hot, smart woman here in California and it turns out she

Greetings all! I just want to let you know the reason I'm moderating
our Group for the time being is because someone's exploiting a flaw in
the main server trays and a lot of junk spam is flowing in to ALL the
Yahoo! Groups like these.
It's amazing they've figured out how to post totally junk messages to
the Yahoo! Groups without even having to register. But they haven't
figured out how to get past the moderation mode (yet!)
That's the only reason I'm channeling the flow for now into the Number
One Newsgroup on Yahoo! which is THIS One.

The Anniversary's coming soon. Right now in '74 they're building the

Hey Rick, I never have seen a photo of that event, but
I remember that my three friends and myself were sooo
stoned that we stood up to protect each other from
what we thought were FULL 1-gallon bottles coming down
to break our necks! We were in the center and saw the
wave of bottles coming, it was awesome. Does anyone
else remember the toppless babe with the sparking
yo-yo? Tom

Hi Fishyboots and welcome aboard! This year, just like every
unfortunate other year, I know of no solid plans for a California Jam
Rebroadcast from my Tapes or from anyone else. Mike Stark the
California Radio Personality mentioned to me a few months ago that he
was planning on doing something, as I think he's got a bit of Wereo
stashed away on his own. Not a lot like *I* have, but he's got a bit.
It's not for lack of trying on my part. I've tried to stay in touch
with several ppl at KLOS but I only get a lot of stonewalling from
them. Bob Coburn from ROCKLINE seems Most Sympathetic to the Cause but
we're still here with no California Jam Rebroadcast planned.
I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you that I will be on the
phone later on today with a heavy duty copyright agency who *may* take
up our Cause. It certainly would be nice if they did, because if they
do it's gonna lead to a lot more ink sort of like the fabulous "One day
in 1974 ..." which is a major component of this Group of course.
I think it's absolutely a travesty that the legacy and my Recordings of
the mighty California Jam seems to be more oppressed today than ever. I
think the Legend of the California Jam and what I did there is one of
the most incredible things that ever happened on Earth. I'd even go so
far as to say I captured the only three hours of radio that EVER
mattered.
Everyone knows how I feel about this. I'm doing this to the best of my
abilities. Help may be on the Way soon. Thank you all for posting here
and for keeping the interests of the Jam going >>>

I like the way you said it was 'awesome.' It WAS awesome!
I wish I could've been there to see it. Unfortunately by the time I
found out about the Jam it was too late to go. It was already when
the second broadcast was coming my way. At least luckily I had the
tape-recorder set up!

I'm still considering doing something on my Internet show in April
on Cal Jam I.
I've got an extremely good stereo video copy of the "overview" show
which includes one song by each of Cal Jam artists which I can draw
clips from. I also just bought the ELP DVD that includes all of the
footage that did air and the audio quality is pretty good. I also
understand that the Deep Purple DVD is very good quality, so that is
another possible resource.
Scott was kind enough to send me his tapes on CD (and the "overview"
show on cassette). I have encouraged him to do some preservation of
the tapes because he's already lost some portions of the show from
tape breaks (Sabbath) and magnetic tapes do go bad after about 10
years. The overview show that he sent me on cassette is no where
near the quality of the version I have.
When ABC aired the shows Scott was able to catch the shows that
featured ELP, Sabbath, Black Oak, Rare Earth and Deep Purple. He
didn't tape the show that spotlighted the Eagles and Earth Wind and
Fire, which, too me, is the real heart of the Jam.
I still believe, especially after seeing the ELP DVD, that, at some
point we'll all get to see the entire ABC broadcast. Those tapes
are out there and will surface -- as did the Deep Purple and ELP
sets did.
Again, I'm personally looking forward to the Eagles stuff to come
out. This was very early in their career and included Jackson
Browne, who, at the time, was not that well known, sitting in.
There are some bootlegs of the Eagles stuff, but the quality is
marginal.
Anyway, I'll try to do something on one of my April shows, but in
the meantime I did a two hour salute to Sabbath on my last show that
is currently replaying at http://rock50.com/stream.html at 11a,7p
and 3a (pacific time). The salute includes "Children of the Grave"
from the California Jam and an extended interview clip with Bill
Ward talking about that important show. Check it out. I'll keep
you posted if I'm going to do anything in April.
