The Ancient Harmonious Society of Woodshedders, Inc. (AHSOW) is
pleased to announce that these seven fine ear-singers joined AHSOW at the
Cardinal District's Fall Convention in Louisville, KY:

Name                 Hometown            Chapter

*Kevin Hughes Terre Haute, IN Terre Haute, IN
  Dave Landes Terre Haute, IN Terre Haute, IN
  Warren Weitkamp Vincennes, IN Terre Haute, IN

* = qualified on all three harmony parts + "woodshed" melody. (Note: Some
men may not possess Tenor or Bass vocal range, but they are outstanding
woodshedders on the voice-parts within their range.)

      Please congratulate all of these gentlemen on their abilities to
harmonize to melodies by ear without referring to written or familiar
arrangements. (These accomplishments merit mention in chapter and District
newsletters, too!)

      The Cardinal District's welcoming support of AHSOW sets a new standard
for all other Districts. AHSOW is grateful to convention chairman Ken
Buckner and absolutely everyone else in the Cardinal District's
administration.

      AHSOW's youngest member, 11-year-old Patrick McAlexander, ably helped
qualify new members and also woodshedded recreationally.

      Jeremy Conover, AHSOW's District Educator & Certifier in Cardinal,
directed the Terre Haute chapter's Banks of the Wabash chorus to the
District championship. We will see Terre Haute at the Indianapolis
International.

      Your next chance to indulge in authentic woodshedding could well be at
your District convention. After that, expect another opportunity at the
Sacramento Mid-Winter. May you ear-sing with highest quality, with
abandon, and until the Tenors drop in their tracks!

I'm sure that some of you don't subscript the the BBShop Harmonet Group - so I wanted to send this along to you and ask that you pass it along to those that you think would be interested in knowing about this and might be willing to pass it along to a friend that will be in Indianapolis next week.

Here's what I posted to the Harmonet this evening - if you have friends in other chapters / districts - Please pass this along to them. Thanks.

//////////////////  Harmonet Posting  ////////////////////////////

I need your help.

We all know that there are a lot of barbershoppers that are not "Harmonetters" - so I'm asking a favor of you fine folks that are. PLEASE help me get the word out about the new format that we are having for the Saturday Night Chordatorium in Indianapolis next week.

I'm asking that you forward this message to your chorus distribution list - especially to those that are going to be in Indianapolis next week. It would be a shame for them to miss out on this opportunity by not knowing about it.

Ask yourself, where can you go to hear in one evening NINE International Quartets each presenting a 12 minute show? And it's all for FREE? Here's the list of the quartets that you'll hear that evening:

Storm Front,              Quest,             Saturday Evening Post,             Flashpoint,             Ignition!,             Metropolis ,             3 Men & A Melody,             12th Street Rag  and Cardinal District's own -                   Keep 'Em Guessin'!

PLUS - The Gold Medal Champs always stop by to sing (of course they may be in this list of 9! Who Knows!?!)

The Chordatorium will be held in the Westin Grand 4-5 beginning at 11:00pm or as soon as the Quartet Finals are over. We'll continue as long as we have quartets and barbershop loving people there to listen. A Cash Bar will be available.

If you have members of your chorus that are coming to Indianapolis - please encourage them to attend the Chordatorium. This will be a wonderful environment to hear these nine quartets - along with other fine quartets, including the 2006 Champs - present a show package in a relaxed environment. You will be able to see what these fine quartets will be like if you hire them for your chapter show. We also have time built into the schedule for other "walk-on" quartets to sing as well.

Please help me get the word out by sending this to your chapter / district friends that will be in Indianapolis next week. If you will be here - stop by and say hell0 on Saturday night!

AHSOW remains "AH, SO RELEVANT"!

      The Ancient Harmonious Society of Woodshedders (AHSOW) cordially
invites all Cardinal District Barbershoppers who will be attending the
upcoming BHS International Convention in Indianapolis to visit the AHSOW
room for some great ear-singing experiences.

      You'll find our woodshedding haven in the "Senate 1" Room in the
headquarters Westin. Hours on Monday will be as staffing levels permit.
Hours from Tuesday on will be continuous except during AHSOW meetings, the
quartet quarterfinals/semifinals/finals, and the chorus finals. As O.C.
Cash desired, we shall woodshed "until the Tenors drop in their tracks."

      The "Senate 1" room is on the Westin's second floor, conveniently near
the escalators and the bridge to the Convention Center.

      Singing, service and support will be available to you if you are:

- as yet unexposed to woodshedding, & you wish to be introduced to the art;
- a newer or infrequent woodshedder wishing to practice & refine your skills;
- someone who loves to sing/learn/harmonize to largely unfamiliar melodies;
- wishing to learn how singing "woodshed" Lead helps you sing "performance"
Lead;
- a chapter officer looking for beneficial variety in your weekly programs;
- a chorus director looking for ways to keep your troops involved &
"belonging";
- an accomplished woodshedder seeking the "ultimate" quartetting experience;
- a current AHSOW member wishing to qualify on an additional harmony-part;
- a prospective AHSOW member wishing to apply your skills toward an audition;
- wishing to expand the number of singers with whom you can always later
interact;
- wishing to expand the repertoire that you can sing with others;
- a Barbershopper who prefers to be active, rather than passive, in this hobby;
- a current AHSOW member wishing to greet and harmonize with some good pals;
- just plumb excited about "discovering" harmony & ringing chords!

      By participating in authentic woodshedding and indulging in the beauty
of the great old songs that lofted Barbershop to its heights of today, you
continue the links between our past and our present. You may also discover
talents in yourself that you may not have realized. You can take these
songs and talents back home for the benefit of our Society and, indeed,
everyone's life that you can touch through this special approach to
Barbershopping.

      Again, you can find all this in the "Senate 1" Room in the Westin Hotel.

      AHSOW's educators, officers, certifiers, and members will be pleased
to welcome you in Indianapolis. Feel free to tell us which aspects of
woodshedding most interest you -- and be sure to arrive ready to sing by
ear!

are, too, to discuss and hear about ways to further woodshedding in your
District.

      The AHSOW GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday,
July 8 in the "CAPITOL 3" ROOM. Come hear some great updates and
information; come with your productive ideas for the betterment of AHSOW;
come meet your AHSOW President and other officers. You'll get out in
plenty of time for authentic woodshedding with your friends!

Q: "I've heard of AHSOW but never took the time to visit. Convince
me why I ought to. What do you offer?"
      A: The Ancient Harmonious Society of Woodshedders, Inc. IS the
beating heart of Barbershopping -- "how it all began." You get the
unparalleled pleasure of creating harmonies by ear to melodies you've never
heard. Even better, you get to discover that you can do it. It's not just
an individual thing for yourself alone, either -- there's much, much more.

      Q: "What do you offer that no one else has?"
      A: In every other aspect of Barbershopping, there's an Authority
Figure standing over you, ready to tell you that you're flat, or you're
behind the beat, or your note is wrong, or you're inadequate in some way.
In authentic woodshedding, or "discovery singing," there are THREE types of
notes -- not ONE of which is "wrong." You need to visit AHSOW in
Indianapolis to hear more about this.

      Q: "What do you offer of value?"
      A: Holy mackerel! Far too much to list here. Go to
http://www.ahsow.org and click "Home Study." Download the fourth document.
Read it, and really let it sink in.

      Q: "Does authentic woodshedding really fill my need?"
      A: It will now, it will later, and it will long-term, for you
personally as a quartet/chorus singer and for your chapter. Come down to
the AHSOW room in Indianapolis and get a plan that suits YOUR situation.

      Q:  "Is it real-world?"
      A: There's nothing "realer-world" than all that you'll get from
ringing chords to the sky -- chords that YOU have created YOURSELF. And
how cool is it that you can share this with your buddies and chapter
leadership, too?

      Q: "Will it work? In our environment?"
      A: Combine the benefits with your enthusiasm and see how well it works!

      Q: "How will it have a positive impact on our people?"
      A: True story: At 2:30 one Sunday morning at a recent convention, a
couple of guys from the last-place chorus dragged into the local AHSOW
room. They had the biggest hang-dog looks that you've ever seen. When
pleasantly invited to join in, they said, "Aw, we can't do this -- we came
in last." In 45 minutes, they had created a Barbershop arrangement of
their very own, all by ear. Informed that they had just achieved what O.C.
Cash and the boys had done, they sprang up in excitement: "We've got to
tell our chorus director about this!" Two happier guys you've never
seen... and two RETAINED MEMBERS like you've never seen.

      Q: "How will a program of authentic woodshedding have impact on our
success?"
      A: Psst! Read that handout that you just downloaded!

      Q: "Will my chorus director and Board buy in?"
      A: If they're sharp, they will, and they can take pride in the
immediate enjoyment they're providing AND your collective success over
time. If they don't buy in, ask why!

      Q: "Will my chapter people use it?"
      A: If your program of authentic woodshedding is introduced and run
properly, you bet they'll use it! Authentic woodshedding means
ENCOURAGEMENT and DISCOVERY, and everyone likes that.

      Q: "How will we produce and profit as a result of regular authentic
woodshedding?"
      A: Ohhh, boy -- keep doing it and see your levels of EVERYTHING increase.

      Q: "Fabulous! How do we get all this?"
      A: Visit the "SENATE 1" ROOM in the headquarters WESTIN HOTEL during
the Indianapolis convention. Pick up a smorgasbord of handouts and
products. Talk with your AHSOW hosts. Ear-sing for fun. If you're good
enough, go for the credibility of AHSOW membership. View AHSOW as YOUR
VEHICLE for more of what you want in Barbershopping.

      Remember: The AHSOW room is a destination, not an option. Be there!

Hello Cardinal District!!!

Just got signed up on this message board and thought now was as good a
time as any to make my first post.

As we all know, the Cardinal Convention is coming up in just 2 short
weeks. I see, as of today, that we've got 9 quartets and 4 choruses
signed up for competition. Since today is the deadline, I'm sure that
number will grow before days' end.

I'm looking forward to competing for the first time in a quartet (2nd
year barbershopper), and I can't wait to hear some great harmony from
all of the quartets and choruses.

See you all in Muncie!!!

Josh and all:

First of all Josh, welcome to the wonderful world of Barbershopping. I spoke to Ernie Nickoson late last night and from what I understand, he has registrations from at least 21 quartets. Swing Time threw our hat in the ring late last night and I know of one other quartet that was registering at the same time that we were registering. So, on with the show!

I'm sure they will have the draw and post the lineup to the Cardinal District website soon. I would also like to ask Ernie Nickoson and Gary Denton to try to communicate better with each other and the district in the future. What I mean by that is, I believe that some people tend to watch to see who has registered for a contest or how many have registered. If you only see 4 choruses and 9 quartets registered the last day of registrations, it may lure you into a false sense of security, or concern, and this may affect your decision to compete or not to compete. It would be nice to see the results updated daily especially the last week or two of registrations.

Good luck to all the contestants! See you in Muncie!

Singcerely,
Ed Hardman

Well, I'm pretty happy with the way things turned out in my first
quartet competition experience. We got some great pointers from the
judges on how to make improvements in our performance. Several things
that we just hadn't developed yet in our 2-3 months together as a
quartet.

We got a lot of encouragement from members of the district and we
really appreciate all of the positive comments.

Looking forward to competing again soon. Congrats to the guys from
The Arrangement, you guys were great.

Hey all and Josh,

Thanks for sparking up some conversation on this district forum.  Communication on this forum can help the district grow stronger, so keep it up!

I wanted to let everyone know that the Cardinal District Quartet Champions Association is available for coaching to any Cardinal quartet who may feel the need to gain improvements on the performance front.  If your quartet or a quartet in your chapter is interested, please contact me at beeritone@... and I will try to get you matched up with a coach in your area or of your choice.

Part of the mission of the QCA is to help our quartets improve and we want to continue this tradition.  The fees are solely up to the coach, but the QCA encourages its members to seek travel expenses only.  If possible, a donation plus travel would be helpful.

Thanks!

Hey all,

To get some conversation going on this site, please share some of your convention stories from Muncie.  I know a lot of great things happened like some guys singing late into the night with Greg Hollander, great contest stories, the Arrangement gave you goosebumps, tags late, you picked up the KEG CD (shameless plug), or any other story you may have.

Share your stories!

Congrats to the Arrangement!  That lead... uh... I mean tenor... no baritone was one smooth singer!!  When is Bob Kendall going to try some bass?

Also kudos to all other quartets for their efforts!  It's great to see some new talent popping up.
