Looking forward to attending the Cardinal District convention in October.
Is there any news as to whether there is a QCA breakfast or supper???
Was also wondering if anyone knows if there is a shuttle that runs from the airport to the headquarters hotel.
Miss all my Cardinal friends and hoping to sing with each and every one of you.

Cardinal District newsgroup members -

The following gives more information on a workshop being hosted by the Indianapolis chapter on September 6, as mentioned in the latest issue of IN-KY Notes.  This is something that could really help our chapters, so please give it serious consideration, and note that pre-registration is required.

Subject: Barbershopping Workshop Extraordinaire

To:  Music Directors, Presidents, Music/Performance VPs and assorted other leaders

From:  Chuck Greene

Hello Guys!

Let’s do something absolutely wonderful for barbershopping.  Let’s cause your chapter to grow, become a great organization and accomplish its goals in great ways.  The new strategies and tools needed are ready now.

An exciting barbershop workshop is planned for Saturday, September 6 in Indianapolis.  It's a workshop—not a seminar, not a lecture.  Participants will interact as a chapter—checking out the new strategies, test-driving the new tools and taking them home.  The workshop is entitled “Compellingly Attractive Chapter Meetings.”  Each of your chapters is invited to send the Music Director or Interim Music Director (mandatory) plus two to seven additional participants.

Compellingly attractive chapter meetings are the heartbeat of viability and the most important pre-requisite for growth.

The workshop has been given a number of times.  In this latest rendition, you will get the benefit of the refinements from feedback.  Some participants from former workshops wrote:

Ø       Let me tell you from my astounded heart, that last Saturday’s workshop was the spark that will bring a flame back to our hobby. I, along with others, were inspired by what you have done. I only hope you can achieve this on an international basis.

Ø      Many members have told us that these are the best meetings we've ever had.  We all agree we're getting more done and having more fun!  We highly recommend Chuck Greene's workshop titled "Compellingly Attractive Chapter Meetings"--and his approach to chapter development--to any chapter, regardless of skills or goals!

Ø      The workshop was as well planned as any I've seen, ever—barbershop or professionally. The concept and his reasoning were appealing. It was fast-paced, logical, innovative, and participatory. It was an eye-opener for everyone. I highly recommend the program. It's a fresh approach to revitalizing our hobby. And it was a heck of a lot of FUN!"

Ø      I have been a member since 1962 and for several decades have assumed that if I lived to be 90 I would be on hand when the Society "turned off the lights."  I was thrilled by your Workshop on Chapter meetings because the material gives us a chance to ... "Save the Society."  The 7 deal-breaker value characteristics are an excellent measurement metric, the learning techniques are the best I've ever seen, the many tips on procedures are terrific, and the scripting approach brings it all together in an extremely positive way.

Ø      It’s been just over 3 months since your workshop and we are so proud of ourselves!  It’s working!

Chapters within roughly a 3-hour driving radius of Indianapolis who have a Music Director and active membership of approximately 18 or more are invited.  Also, a few Society leaders, District leaders and others who have expressed interest in the workshop are invited.

The workshop content is aimed at near-term growth and long-term viability.  You’ll return to your chapter knowing how to build it into a great organization—what to do on meeting nights (short of hiring the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes) to make meetings compellingly attractive to prospective and current members.

The workshop is chocked full of specific strategies and tools—over 30—to inspire chapter growth in this day and time.  Most of them will be new to you.  They are primarily Music Team purview, championed by the Director(s).

Asheville, NC Chapter began beta-testing the strategies and tools in 2006.  In the last 2 years:

  • the chapter's active membership increased by over 80%,
  • over 70% of the prospective members who visited a meeting joined, and
  • the average age of the chapter’s active membership dropped by 9 years.

These stats are better than the overwhelming majority of Society chapters.  And the growth happened organically—no major marketing push or advertising blitz.

Guys, it’s not too good to be true.  The grounding for this work is deep.  It’s from research and beta-testing—no armchair guesses, no pet theories, no social seminar—this is the real deal—you can check the website for the research details and background: www.21stn7th.com .

The workshop content is the result of over two years of graduate-level studies dealing with these questions:

  1. What are the causes that have driven over 90% of North American non-profits with a club or chapter structure into decline over the last 40 years?  [The Society is a classic case among thousands of these organizations in decline.]
  2. What strategies have revitalized the few who are thriving again?

The causes of decline have affected every organization on the continent.  They are forces we cannot control—forces of social context and generational change.  Society chapters must adapt to these forces in order to thrive.

And now we know how.  We have envisioned and beta-tested successful strategic solutions.

“Compellingly Attractive Chapter Meetings” is the first in a series of three workshops.  More specifics on the content of the first workshop and on the basis for the workshop series are attached.

Here’s the thumbnail rundown:

Workshop Title:           "Compellingly Attractive Chapter Meetings"

Premise:                      To survive and thrive, Society chapters must choose strategic priorities
that adapt them to become 21st-century-viable organizations.

Purposes:

  1. Teach what strategic priorities are necessary for chapters to adapt and thrive.
  2. Provide and demonstrate over 30 new tools and activities to create adaptive change.
  3. Instill believability and hope by framing the activities within a strategic vision.

Date & Time:                Saturday, September 6, 2008, 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Place:                          Christ Lutheran Church

                                      345 N. Kitley Ave.

                                       Indianapolis, IN  46219
Workshop Cost:            $75 per participant submitted in advance w/attached registration form

Registration Due:         Monday, August 25

What/Who to Bring:

Ø       One CD boom box with each chapter group

Ø       The chapter group itself: Music Director plus 2 to 7 other members (Mus/Perf VP & President recommended in the mix but not mandatory—any interested members are welcome.) The Music Director needs a smart chapter team with him (her)—choose well.

To Register:

Fill out the attached Registration Form, pen a check to 21st & 7th LLC, and mail both to:

        Chuck Greene
        219 Windsor Forest Circle
        Fletcher, NC  28732

Okay, guys, that's pretty much the deal.  The opportunity is at hand to experience a fast-paced, super-fun workshop full of new stuff that has the power to revitalize most chapters in the Society.

Please check the website www.21stn7th.com , read the attachments, have discussions and decide.  Please respond by Monday, August 25—if you need a bit more time, email or call and we’ll be as flexible as a baritone in the woodshed.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Hello folks,

This is a heads up that the Cardinal District fall convention is
right around the corner. It will be held in Louisville again at the
Clarion hotel and convention center.

The contest manager has just been set up on the BHS website, so you
can go there now and start registering.

Also, please start checking the status of your BHS membership and
ensure it is up to date. Each competing quartet or chorus member
needs to a dues paying member by the weekend of the contest.

Email me with questions at: aaronkdale@...

Talk to you all soon!

Gary,
I can speak to the reason why the show was not appearing on the District Website.  The District posts the show dates when the BME/SESAC Show Clearance Application and Fees are paid.  I saw your previous emails and contacted your Chapter Secretary that I needed the application and fees  Apparently, he was not aware of the procedures for show clearance.  I received them last week and sent them out within 2 days of receipt.  I forwarded the spreadsheet for posting to the District Webmaster, Brad McAlexander at the same time.

We've been having perrenial trouble with the timeliness of the INKY Notes and we are looking into alternatives.  It sounds like your are going to have a great show!  Break a leg!

Is there any reason why we haven't received any InKy Notes for a
while? Also, the district website hasn't been updated in some time.
The last quartet champ listed in the History section is 2004, Boundary
Line.
There is also no mention of the Circle City Sound show this
weekend on the website. Why? So, just in case anyone was looking for
something to do this Saturday. The Circle City Sound is having our
show featuring your current district quartet champs, The Edge, and
TKO, the current JAD quartet champs and Nashville qualifier. Go to
www.circlecitysound.org for tickets. We are really close to selling
out so, don't wait till you get there, you may be left out in the rain.

Thanks for the kind words, they are appreciated!

Now, if you could just find a winning lottery ticket for us to share.............

From a registrant's perspective, is there anything on the District's website about CCC that could or should have been included?

See you in July........

11-13 July, 2008 at Indiana Wesley University, Marion, Indiana

It's bigger, and better than last year! You asked for it, and you
got it! More classes, more variety, and more fun. Yet, despite the
recent rise in fuel costs and economic worries, we are able to bring
all of this to you at the same rates as 2007! You are absolutely
correct! We are again offering our "Just for you special", at
those "Register 4 and only pay for 3" rates! But that's not all!
We didn't mention our new and exciting giveaway! Maybe we should
look at all of this in more detail…….

More classes – In 2007 we only had 6 classes. In 2008 you have 14 to
chose from! We know you are really impressed with our growth, but
please keep reading…………

More variety – We've added 5 new classes just to help you improve
your vocal techniques. But wait, there's even more!

Have you always wanted to learn how to use that great music program
Finale? Well this year we have a class that can do just that for
you. Then again, maybe you always wanted to try your hand at
arranging? If so, we suggest you attend Jon Nicholas's class on
Beginning Arranging. Do you know a barbershopper today who doesn't
like to sing tags? You do? Then you must bring him to the Tag
Singing class being taught by the Cardinal District's own "tag
masters", Aaron Hughes and Garry Texiara. There are many more
classes to select, and we strongly suggest that you take a look at
the Class Descriptions link on the District website to find the ones
that are right for you!

More fun – You will begin your CCC experience with a great Friday
night show featuring the Harmony Explosion Chorus, The Edge, and
wait, there is even more! You will also be entertained by a "Mystery
Quartet". That's right, a Mystery Quartet!!! But we can't let the
secret out. You have to be there in order to find who they are!
Then immediately after the show, we will gather in the Student Center
to continue registration for the late arrivals, and we'll even mix in
some socializing and tag singing. After that, you will finish out
the evening by treating yourself to a quiet night of restful sleep in
those luxurious accommodations that we have reserved just for you in
Reed Hall!

On Saturday, it only gets better! 3 great meals in IWU's "4 star
restaurant", excellent classes, quartet coaching, chorus coaching,
and…. well, there's just too much to list here! Why not take a look
at the Class Schedule link and read all about it? Then wrap up the
day by attending a "Meet the Champs" show featuring all of the
quartets who received coaching, the Fort Wayne chorus, and
the "Mystery Quartet". Oh, did we forget to mention that there will
be a pizza party going on during the show? Followed by a second,
that's right, a second night of restful sleep in those luxurious
accommodations we provide for you in Reed Hall! I'm telling you,
this Cardinal Chord College is the best thing that's come along since
canned beer, crunchy peanut butter, or even Oxy-Clean!

Sunday, you will enjoy a gourmet breakfast, followed by a two hour
class, a general session, and you should be on your way home no later
than 11:30 AM.

Register 4 and pay for 3 – This seemed to cause some confusion last
year so let's see if we can explain….. Normally, if 4 people (some
might call that a quartet) registered at the individual rate of $175,
it would cost them a total of $700 to avail themselves of this
wonderful opportunity. But, because you are special to us, we can
offer the following: If a quartet, or 4 men from the same chorus
register together (they don't have to be in a quartet), they only
have to pay a total of $525 (or $131.25 each). That's a total
savings of $175!

In addition to our individual registration rate of $175 that includes
all that CCC has to offer, we are also pleased to offer a commuter
rate of $127. This includes shows, classes, and meals, but no
lodging.

Don't wait to take advantage of these outstanding pricing
opportunities! We are only offering these rates to the first 1000
men who register!

The giveaway – We're sure you have heard those old adages of "Beware
of strangers bearing gifts", or "If it sounds too good to be true, it
probably is". But in this case, we have to add one more….. "Trust
me"!

Here's what will happen if you do: We are giving away a scholarship
to the 2009 Harmony University! That's right, a scholarship that
pays your tuition and allows you attend the second best school
offered by the Society (CCC has to be #1). The drawing will be held
Saturday night at the "Meet the Champs" show.

But wait…… here's the best part about this great opportunity! There
are no tests to take, no puzzles to solve, or even any shipping and
handling charges! In order to be eligible, all you have to do is
register to attend Cardinal Chord College! It's that easy, and hard
to imagine isn't it? Will your name be drawn? There's only one way
to find out…. Register for CCC!

More information - The valuable links on the District website
provide a lot of useful information, like registration forms, plus
several items like directions to IWU, a map, and schedules that can
be printed and brought with you to CCC. These links should answer
many of your questions. But if they don't, or we've overlooked
something, please feel free to contact the CCC registrar, Steve
Albert, at salbert@bluemarble. net or (812)-825-8989.

We'll see you at CCC 11-13 July!

Albert, at salbert@... or (812)-825-8989.

We'll see you at CCC 11-13 July!

District-Wide Message - Spring Convention in Louisville

To All Cardinal District Barbershoppers,

As you know, the Cardinal District Spring Convention and Contests will be held April 4-6, 2008 at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Louisville, KY.  WOW - just a month from now!  My primary motivation for this letter is to encourage all of you...each of you...to attend the convention this Spring, either as a competitor or an enthusiastic supporter of our quartets and choruses.

As District Director of Events, I coordinate all aspects of convention weekends.  I negotiate the best rates I can with the hotels we use.  Sometimes, as we have in Louisville this year, the convention and the contest venue are in one location.  The room rate is $89.95 per night.  While we believe that to be a competitive rate, there may be less expensive places to stay in the area.  I STRONGLY encourage you to stay at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center.  Be there to mingle and sing with your buddies.  Be there to provide encouragement to all our competitors while you root for your favorites!

While I hate to put this in monetary terms, the fact is, money is a factor here.  The district derives the majority of its income from our convention weekends.  The cost of registration helps pay the expenses associated with putting on a convention and contests (auditorium fees, lighting, sound, judges expenses, etc.).  Revenue from conventions are also put into the district travel fund to help offset some of the  competitors' expenses to go to International.  The remainder is available to support other district programs and expenses.  I negotiate with the hotel for competitive rates, with the plan that our folks will stay there.  The hotel, in return, doesn't charge us for all the function space we use.  If our barbershoppers use other hotels, which we understand is happening this spring in Louisville, then we're in trouble!  The Clarion needs to recoup its expenses.  If they then charge the district for all the space we use, the district loses money on the convention.  What do we do....raise convention registrations fees and/or district dues?  None of us want this to happen.

If you booked a room in Louisville, but not at the Clarion Hotel, I respectfully request you cancel that room and join us at the Clarion.  Help us fulfill the block of rooms we committed to the Hotel.  Be there with us; have fun with us!

District conventions are a great time for us to get together with our barbershop buddies, and share our love for this hobby.  It's also a time to compete.  In the spring contests, quartets vie for the opportunity to qualify for the International Quartet Contest (this year to be held in Nashville, TN).  Collegiate quartets hope for their chance to compete at the next level (also in Nashville in July).  Senior quartets will be battling it out for the title as District Senior Quartet Champions.  But the majority of men in the contest will likely come from choruses trying to win one of the coveted Plateau Championship trophies.  In this contest, choruses are grouped in plateaus based on their prior contest scores; choruses are competing with others in their plateau.  It has nothing to do with size of the chorus, but with how well they've sung in the past!  We have four plateaus, and therefore, four possible champions to crown on Saturday afternoon.

During the weekend, the District will present several awards.  Bulletin Editor of the Year, Chapter of the Year, and District Barbershopper of the Year are some that are on the docket for this spring!

Saturday evening, after the quartet finals are over, we'll have an opportunity to hear the Kentucky Vocal Union (our representatives to the International Chorus Contest in July), plus current and past champion quartets.  We'll also hear from our qualifying quartets this year, plus the Collegiate qualifiers and the District Senior Champs.  All of this is included in your convention registration fee.

I apologize for the length of this message, but I have a couple more details that need to be addressed regarding this convention and contests.  There are a limited number of Hospitality Rooms available for our chapters to use.  They are available at NO CHARGE if a member of the chapter rents the adjoining sleeping room.  This is a great deal, and one we have been able to negotiate ONLY with the Clarion.  If your chapter wants one of these Hospitality Rooms at no charge, contact the Clarion at once.  They will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis.  When they're gone, they're gone!  But, please, identify who from your chapter will be in the adjoining room.

The stage in the contest venue is raised above the floor.  We have steps on and off the stage.  If you're competing in a quartet or chorus in this contest, and need assistance getting on stage (or know someone who does), please let me know as soon as possible so we can make the appropriate arrangements.

Attached with this e-mail are copies of the Housing and Convention Registration Forms for the Spring Convention.  Please note the March 20 deadline for securing rooms at the convention rate and getting your convention registration discount.  If you prefer, you can also find the forms on the Cardinal District website at <www.cardinaldisttrict.org>.  Either way, fill them out and send them at once.

I look forward to seeing you at the Spring Convention, April 4-6, 2008 at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Louisville, KY!!!!

Brad,
Attached is an article for the next IN-KY NOTES covering the upcoming Spring Convention in Louisville.  I am concerned about timing, however.  The contest is only 6 weeks away.  Will the IN-KY NOTES be printed, mailed, and received in time for folks to do anything about it?  My fear is, "no".  Regardless, it needs to be included, but I think I need to have another way to get the message about the Spring convention to our district membership.  Any ideas?  Ben or Gary, feel free to reply here.....
By the way, I sent them to you already, but I also re-attached copies of the Housing and Convention Registration forms which also need to be in the IN-KY NOTES.

Subject: More HQ Updates...Feb. 4, 2008

Gentlemen –

Here’s some more news from HQ on status of Systems, processes, etc.  District folks, in an effort to simply keep everyone informed, please get this out as far and wide as you can to every member. This is a great opportunity to continue to connect and show your support to our members.

We’d be most appreciative if you will send these updates to your chapters OR to every member of your districts… that’s ultimately who we want receiving the information.  Not simply Chapter secretaries who don’t check email or forget to forward it to chapters!  Attached is the current PDF update on steps and processes.

TO:  All Members of the Barbershop Harmony Society

UPDATE:  February 4, 2008

Membership Updates:

·        Our online EBIZ system continues to develop every day.  We have new updates happening quickly, and improvements are being made on what content is already there. Please check back often to see if what you have been wishing for has appeared.

·        CHAPTER OFFICERS show BLANK if your chapter secretary has not entered the officers prior to January 31.  If you need help getting the secretary added for a chapter, and subsequently need guidance on adding the remainder of your officers yourself, please contact membership@....

·        We are aware… that we have sent out a few new member kits to the wrong members.  Some who receive them have been simply renewal members (of 27 or 32 years!), but our IT system fixes are coming quickly for this problem.  This is NOT a wide spread issue, but if you have erroneously received a new member kit, when you only needed a member’s new Membership Card, please contact us at membership@....

·        We are “in with the new” and “out with the old” – on almost everything related to Membership & Chapter administrative tasks.  Almost everything is available on Ebiz for Chapter Management, but there are still some functions not yet available on Ebiz.  https://ebiz.barbershop.org

·        Feel like Nobody’s Listening?  We assure you we are.  The messages are so voluminous that we may not be able to reply to every single comment you have, but please rest assured we ARE listening, and in fact your help is very much appreciated.  It’s precisely because of your feedback that some fixes have been able to happen so quickly.  Keep the constructive suggestions coming!

Music Updates:

·        ONLINE CJ-20 forms… are working.  For NOW, the page on the old members only system is working in integration with our new system.  However, nothing else on the old Members Only site is working with live data.  We hope to have this rolled over onto Ebiz very quickly, but for now, it works fine, and it simply in another place.  Registrations ARE being processed, and if you receive an e-mail error, fear not… your registration has gone through.  To register quartet/chorus competition info, go to:  https://secure.spebsqsa.org/members/login.asp - After entering Members Only, choose Contest Entry (CJ-20) under the heading Contest and Judging Community.

Call For Papers - March 2008 GUBOQS Gazette

To: Harmonetters,SPEBnet
Bcc: Distr LS; AHSOW - BQPA

This is the call for papers for the March 2008 issue of the GUBOQS
Gazette*, an independent pro-quartet publication. We publish success
stories describing regular quartet encouragement sessions held during
chapter meetings. We seek creative ideas which influence SPEBSQSA
members to try quartetting.

Do your quartet sessions give every member an opportunity to sing
with three others at every meeting? Email me a one page article
describing your program. The target date for your article is two
weeks from today.

Thank you,

Val.........

The Cardinal District COTS was held on 5 January,

CCC will occur approximately a week after International.   A firm date has not been established for 2008.

Last year at CCC we had 8 quartets receive coaching, and we ran a "Register 4 men and only pay for 3" program.

By doing this, the cost for a Friday night show, lodging Friday night, coaching on Saturday + meals,
Saturday lodging, and Sunday breakfast was $525 for the entire quartet.   Pricing for 2008 has not been
established.

I'm sure we could probably find some way to fit in an Illinois quartet, but only if you disguised yourself as Hoosiers!   :-)

Gentlemen,

I'm an interloper from Illinois - but I attended COTS last year
in Columbus and was made an honorary member of Cardinal District. (At
least that's what they said when I bought them 8 rounds of beers....)

Illinois seems to be having some problems with it's district
events - COTS has been "delayed" and IDAH (which I *think* is the
rough equivalent of your CCC) has been cancelled completely.

WHEN do you have some events coming up that I can bring my
quartet to attend? CCC? COTS? Others of interest to 4 guys who wanna
sing better and have some fun at the same time?

The other question is (and I'll have to write down the answer
this time...) is that there is allegedly a large formalwear outfit in
NW Indiana that has an annual warehouse sale - coming up soon I
think - where one can get tuxedos and the like for a song (...)

Anybody know where and when?

Thanks,

As background......

There are 5 experienced Bloomington, IN barbershoppers who presently sing with other chapters because the Bloomington Chapter has been slowly dying for several years.  The chapter is down to 5 men, and so we experienced barbershoppers put our heads together, came up with a plan, and we are trying to revitalize/save the Bloomington Chapter.   In this regard, we have found a rehearsal hall for Thursday evening rehearsals, and have 25+ men standing by to begin singing/rehearsing.  Regretfully, we have no director and so we are on a director search.
