"Spancil Hill" by Straight Furrow
Hometown: Dereham, Norfolk, England
A UK three piece with a powerful mix of traditional Irish
and original tunes and songs. Haunting aires to raise the
hair on your neck and rip-roaring dance music get your feet
tapping.
I've listened to Straight Furrow's instrumental MP3s for a
while, but somehow I missed their songs. "Spancil Hill" is a
marvelous upbeat and grooving version of Michael Considine's
immigrant ballad. You can definitely hear Straight Furrow's
Fairport Convention influences, but it's the fair straight
forward, honest folk sound that admire most from this
barndance band. They've been a hit online and are once again
a new hit in my book of great Celtic folk music!
Influences: Renaissance, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span,
Mike Oldfield

CAPTURED LIVE CAUGHT ME ON FIRE
What?! You don't own Pubcrawler's new CD "Captured Live"?! Are
you crazy? Go out and get it... right now... don't wait.
I first met Pubcrawler a few years back when they were performing
at Fado's. A year later, they moved to B.D. Riley's Irish Pub on
Sixth Street and started a residency there. I lost count how many
years they've been at B.D. Riley's, but every Friday night, you
can go down to Sixth Street and listen to some great Irish pub
music by Austin's #1 Pub Band--Pubcrawler. And best of all, they
finally made a CD. It was recorded live at B.D. Riley's.
Okay, I admit I was a little hesitant about getting the album.
Pubcrawler is not a very traditional Irish music group. So I went
to their website and listened to a few of their free MP3s. The
music was a lot of fun, so I bought the CD. I then found out the
individual songs are not nearly as enjoyable as experiencing the
entire album.
Neville Stewart, the token Irishman plays bass, bodhran and sings
backup. Wes Pasco plays guitar and sings lead. Wayne Duncan
rocks away with some great Country-style percussion on drums.
And Sean Orr kicks arse on fiddle. While their music may not
sound totally traditional, they've created something outstanding
that combines the best traditional Irish music with contemporary
pub rock music.
Though this is a band meant to be heard live, this CD does a
brilliant job capturing that live performance. It's packed full
of energy and excitement. Often after you hear live music, you
want to run out and buy the CD. Well I did the opposite. I got
the CD, and this week, I'm running down to B.D. Riley's to catch
their live show!
So hurry up. Go to http://themidtown.com/pubcrawler/ and order
you copy of the CD, or get it at Things Celtic before it's too late!

"Danny Boy" by The Irish Gypsy
Hometown: Somerset, NJ USA
McCall Farrell is a classical trained opera singer with Irish
roots and a passion for many genres of music. She's a 26 year
old soprano located in the DC Metro Area, currently recording
her first compilation cd of original & traditional Irish tunes.
Another beautiful voice I first heard on MP3.com, McCall Farrell
has an operatic diamond voice as she sings the Irish American
classic "Danny Boy".
I was chatting with some folks today about the place of Irish
American music and it's place in the Celtic music world. The
lyrics for "Danny Boy" were written by an English lawyer,
Frederic Edward Weatherly (1848-1929), to an old Irish aire.
The song was popularized by many of the old American ballad
singers like Bing Crosby. Despite these beginnings it was
embraced by the Irish American community and is an important
part of the Celtic culture.
Influences: Kate Price, Elizabeth Futral, Evanescence,
Loreena McKennit, Connie Dover
