1. Celtic Music News
=========================

Greetings friends,

First, I wanna thank everyone who cast their vote for the
Brobdingnagian Bards in the Austin Music Poll. The results will
be announced in March during SXSW, the largest independent music
festival in the nation. We were fortunate enough to play there
three years ago. God willing, we'll win an award there this year.

As a special thank you and since Valentine's Day is rapidly
approaching, I was able to procure a free eBook get a free ebook
from Romantic.com to give to you. It's called one "101 Romantic
Ideas." And I hope you find something wonderful to do with your
loved one.

The Secret World of Celtic Rock Revealed
http://celticmp3s.com/magazine/2005/02/secret-world-of-celtic-rock-revealed.shtm\
l

Two years ago I had an exciting idea to release a Celtic Rock CD.
Man, I've outdone myself! No. I take that back. It's not me. All
I did was compile some of the best independent Celtic Rock bands
around and organize them onto a CD. The result is destined to be
a hit CD among contemporary and traditional Celtic music lovers
alike--"The Secret World of Celtic Rock."

Update Your Subscription for a Special Gift
http://www.celticmp3s.com/subscribe.shtml
The move is complete. I want to migrate as many people as possible
to the new list, where you can choose between HTML OR Text.

I'm probably stupid for doing this, but what the hell. Everyone
who migrates their email address to the new list and emails me
that they made the move will receive a FR*EE downloadable copy
of my CD, "Soul of a Harper," which was picked as CD favorite
of Austin's Celtic Storm radio program in 2003. That's no picnic
for the Live Music Capitol of the World.

I'm probably psycho for doing this since there are over 5,000
subscribers to this newsletter. But I'm love the new format, and
you will be too. Pick the HTML or text version, and you will love
the new newsletter.

Just email me when you make the switch, and I will email you a
link to download this popular CD.

CELTIC BAND FEATURE #1
=========================

"Tom O'Connor's/The Joy of My Life/Handy with the Stick" by Téada

Téada's characteristic lively blend of instrumentals and vocals
in the traditional Irish idiom has seen the band evolve into
the busiest touring act in the traditional music scene in recent
times. Having first come to attention through an appearance on
the innovative Irish television series, Flosc, in 2001, Téada
has since gone on to capture the imagination of many thoughout
the world with a creative and spontaneous musical approach,
seeking to capture the intricicies of traditional artform
within a contemporary band context.

CELTIC CD FEATURE

"Kinnitty Sessions" by Lunasa
by Michelle Osborne

Artist: Lunasa
Album: Kinnitty Sessions
Year produced: 2004

Lunasa's first album arrived on the scene in 1997, a natural
outgrowth of their time spent playing together. Since then,
they have produced 4 more albums, as well as several solo albums.
Lunasa's musical sound is defined by the uilleann pipes (an
instrument that most of these Irish "super groups" sadly seem
to do without) and the use of an acoustic bass. Unashamedly
influenced by jazz music, Lunasa's music is filled with a variety
of syncopations and lush harmonies that are expertly woven into
both traditional and newly-composed tunes.

The Kinnitty Sessions album was recorded live in front of a
small audience (though the sound quality is so good you wouldn't
actually know this) in Ireland's supposedly haunted Kinnitty
Castle. The opening track is typical Lunasa and is a true joy to
listen to. The first tune is an entirely traditional rendition
of the jig, the Stolen Purse, played on pipes (Cillian Vallely)
and flute (Kevin Crawford). The second tune, An Síoda, brings
in the accompaniment in a syncopated pattern that is Lunasa's
jazz-influenced sound at its best. After a brief pause, the full
group launches into the final tune, Brendan McMahon's Reel. Yes,
that's right. One of the hallmarks of Lunasa's tune arrangements
is their change between tune types in the middle of a set.
While this is far from traditional, it brings an unexpected
and refreshing twist to the music.

Other highlights on this album are Kevin Crawford's whistle
playing on the reel set entitled Island Paddy (besides a gorgeous
whistle tone quality, his technique and style are amazing to
listen to), a gorgeous uilleann pipe air entitled The Wounded
Hussar, and a fantastic moment on the Walrus track where three
members of the ensemble (Kevin and Cillian are joined by Sean
Smyth, the fiddle player) all play low whistles and weave in and
out of harmony and melody with each other.

Like Solas, Lunasa is not quite pure-drop trad. But if you want
a fun album to listen to, this, or any of their other four albums,
comes highly recommended. You can find more information on Lunasa
at the Lunasa website.

Celtic MP3s Music Magazine writer, Michelle Osborne, a native
to the central New York region, plays both high and low whistles
regularly with the Syracuse Irish session. Besides being heavily
involved in Irish traditional music, she is also a classical
clarinetist and composer.

CELTIC BAND FEATURE #2
=========================

"Moving Air" by Enam

Enam's music appears to be a mixture of Celtic, New Age,
African, and even Medieval influences... By using multi-layer
techniques, he was able to play all the instruments and sing all
the voices. Some of his mesmerizing compositions do not have
traditional lyrics as such, but they contain combinations of
pronounced and sung sounds that invite the listener on an
otherworldly journey.
