1. Celtic Music News
=========================

Greetings Celtic Music Lovers,

I'm really happy to feature two of my favorite Celtic artists
around: Ed Miller and The Elders

I was honored to help Ed Miller get on MP3.com a few years back.
His dedication towards the Songs of Scotland is inspiring, and is
a continual favorite Celtic artist of mine, but a download from
his latest CD will be testament to how great his music is. Once
you get a taste of "Ferry Me Over" by Ed Miller, you will be
begging for his CD.

The Elders I heard about from one of the Brobdingnagian Bards
fans last year. I think I mentioned that I wanted to put together
a Celtic rock CD, and Cynthia immediately got me in touch with
them. So I had to see them live at North Texas Irish Festival
last year. My sister and I were blown away by their passionate
blend of Celtic rock. Not only were The Elders the perfect touch
to my upcoming compilation CD, "The Secret World of Celtic Rock,"
but they like Ed Miller will perform at the North Texas Irish
Festival next weekend.

If you want to find me at NTIF, I'll be wearing my Clan Gunn kilt
watching these two stellar artists!

---

I HAD to share this.

I got a phone call today from a fan from Oklahoma. I could hear
my friend Emilee bouncing up and down on the phone. She told me
*someone* posted a flyer for my upcoming "Irish Drinking Songs
for Cat Lovers" CD in the local PetSmart.

Yes, I am at last working on that CD. Fourteen tracks are
recorded. I have TV stations, newspapers, and now fans in the
middle of Oklahoma PetSmarts calling to find out when this CD
will be complete.

I plan to finish by mid-summer. There's a lot o'fun music.
Listen with a light heart and a love cats, and you will have
a blast. If you want a sampling or would like to sponsor the CD,
tell your friends to visit http://www.catdrinkingsongs.com/ .

CELTIC CD FEATURE
=========================

by Michelle Osborne

Ask anyone about great American fiddlers and the name Liz Carroll
is sure to come to the forefront of anyone who knows anything's
mind. Beginning with winning both Junior and Senior All-Ireland
championships before she turned 20, she has produced four
brilliant solo albums received a National Heritage Award
Fellowship (1994), and was named "Irish Traditional Musician
of the Year" by the Irish Echo (2000).

Lake Effect (the title a tribute to the particular type of heavy
snowfalls that occur in Chicago and the northeast as winter
storms come across the Great Lakes) is Liz's most recent solo
album. Accompanied by John Doyle on guitar, the album is a
beautiful showcase both for Liz's fiddle playing and her
composition skills. It takes a true understanding of the
tradition to compose tunes which seem to be a part of it and
yet still retain their unique character. She does this easily
and has, in fact, done this on all her albums.

A quick glance at the back cover of this album highlights one
peculiarities of this album: The Turtle Island String Quartet.
Rarely does the combination of classical ensembles with Irish
traditional music produce anything but very trite music.
Traditional music dressed in a tuxedo and paraded out as
"Celtic." With Liz's touch, as well as this particular string
quartet, this is not what we get. Instead, we get the Catherine
Kelly's/Lake Effect tune set, an absolutely brilliant setting
of a traditional tune, followed by one of Liz's own. The setting
itself is jazzed up, with rhythm set up in the lower instruments
and interjections by the higher violins. While not entirely
traditional, it fits the music amazingly well and is the
principal highlight of this album. Other highlights are the
Liz Carroll tune "The Ghost," a beautiful air composed for a
scene in a Marina Carr play, and an absolutely brilliant
rendition of the traditional tune, "The Morning Dew."

CELTIC BAND FEATURE #2
=========================

"Ferry Me Over" by Ed Miller

What can I say about Ed Miller. I adore his work. Ed is a
a native of Edinburgh, Scotland who now lives in Austin, Texas.
He is a product of the 1960s folk revival in Scotland and moved
to the United States in 1968 to complete his graduate work in
Geography, and later Folklore, at the University of Texas at
Austin. He is also the host of a folk music program on Austin's
public radio station, KUT-FM.

Ed Miller has had a profound on my musical career. I first met
him at a Scottish gathering in Austin, Texas. It must've been my
second year performing Celtic music. He was a stunning performer,
and focusing on the songs of Scotland, he inspired me to start
studying the music of my own Clan Gunn heritage.

Now we're working on our Scots CD, "Real Men Wear Kilts," but
I honestly can't see how it could compare to the strong confident
songs of Ed Miller. He's a brilliant storyteller and a majestic
singer. I hope one day I'll be half the musician of Ed Miller.
