1. Celtic Music News
=========================

Greetings Celtic Music Lovers,

A couple weeks back I got an email regarding the review of Moloney,
O'Connell & Keane's CD, "Kilkelly". Anyone who's heard that title
track knows just how amazingly powerful the song is. As a
songwriter myself, I can only hope that one of my songs may one
day be a tenth as powerful as that song.

So I was extremely touched last week in Missouri when a lady in
a wheelchair who didn't miss a single performance called us close
and told Andrew and me, "I'm in pain all the time. The only time
I feel fine is when I listen to your music."

I love hearing comments like that. The power of music is just
amazing. Nearly every artist you hear in this newsletter thrives
on making a difference with their music. As independent musicians,
this is not an easy task. So I want to thank you for taking the
time to listen and buy all of our CDs. I want to thank you for
helping us all achieve our goals. I know I have.

Last week, I handed in my resignation at the University of Texas
at Austin. July 8th is my last day working there. After that I am
blessed with the opportunity to make music my profession.

So thank you all for your support. I hope you will take a moment
to tell your Celtic friends to subscribe ot this magazine,
download some of the the music offered by bands like you will
hear today...

I met the first band, Three Quarter Ale, at DragonCon in Atlanta,
Georgia. Like many bands who perform at Renaissnce Festivals,
Three Quarter Ale is fun and puts on a great show. You can catch
a peek of that when you listen to their live rendition of the
old Scots song "Twa Magicians".

The second band, Tara's Fire, is an Irish folk group from Ohio.
They have a knack for good songs of death, destruction, and
drinking. Well, that sums up a good pub band, huh?

I wish you all many fulfilled dreams. Slainte!
Marc Gunn, Bard

CELTIC BAND FEATURE #1
=========================

"Two Magicians" by Three Quarter Ale

Three Quarter Ale is a Ren-rock band based in Atlanta, GA.
Comprised of players Ariana Pellayle (Becky Cormier), Rosemary
Quench (Rivka Levin), and Wicked Pete Speakeasy (Dolph Amick),
Three Quarter Ale combines the lilting charm of 17th-century
madrigals and traditional favorites with the high-energy
impact of modern folk-rock for a truly arresting sound.
The toast of the Georgia Renaissance Festival pub crowd,
Three Quarter Ale's tempting blend of lively harp, flute,
guitar, and ethnic percussion with delicious three-part vocal
harmonies in turn uplifts, enchants, and makes listeners want
to dance in their seats.

CELTIC CD FEATURE
=========================

"Take Two" by Sean McCabe and Cady Finlayson
by Catherine L. Tully

Artist: Sean McCabe and Cady Finlayson
http://www.violincady.com/
Album: Take Two
http://cdbaby.com/cd/seanandcady/from/celtic/
Year produced: 2000

With the pairing of Cady Finlayson on the fiddle and Sean
McCabe's smooth voice--how can you go wrong? This 16-track CD
is packed with expert playing, traditional sounding tracks and
a little experimentation here and there to boot. In other words,
there is a little something for everyone.

If you are a traditionalist, waste no time--go for track four--
"Rising of the Moon." It gives you that good, familiar feeling,
like relatives are in the living room singing old songs. For
those who get their toes tapping with Irish Step Dance music,
there is a jig, a reel and a hornpipe in store as well.

If you are in need of a pick-me-up, try track nine--"Nobody Wants
to Know You When You're Broke." It will pretty much guarantee a
smile on a rough day. Most of the songs have the upbeat style of
Irish music--even when they speak of sadness. The first track,
"Northerners" which talks about the difficulties in Ireland and
leaving the country is still a terrific listen and doesn't leave
you feeling glum.

Cady Finlayson's skill is obvious, and the CD does highlight it.
The fiddle playing in track 12 struck that lovely yearning that
only truly skilled players can make you feel. It will leave you
with a lump in your throat. At times she is in a supporting role
to McCabe's voice, but many of the tracks let her shine as well.

Track 15, "Take These Blues Away" is the prayer of a widow, and
does a nice job of marrying the two artists together in sound.
It is also McCabe's strongest "storytelling" style-song. The
entire CD does a good job of mixing it up so that you are never
sure what to expect next, although you are assured an interesting
ride, regardless. All in all this mixture of contemporary Celtic
folk and traditional-style music works.
