1. Celtic Music News
=========================
Greetings Celtic Music Lovers,
I've had a busy couple o'weeks. Self-imposed of course. I found
I REALLY Like podcasting. I want to do MORE of it. So what did
I do? Last week, I released the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast #3.
I think I'm gonna up the episodes to every other week. I think
I can pull that off. Plus, I have access to sooo much music I
want to share and that a weekly ezine doesn't allow me to do.
So I'm gonna aim for an hour-long show of Celtic music that you
can listen to again and again and find the great music.

In case you missed the news, The Rogues have a brand new CD out
called RogueTrip. Plus, they have an all new lineup that includes
EJ Jones, formerly of the Texas Celtic supergroup, Clandestine.
That's important because on Rogues 5.0, the band featured "Bonnie
Portmore" with an amazing arrangement that included brass horns.
This time, EJ Jones is leading a new popular arrangement of the
song on flute. It is breath-taking. The Rogues are also the
latest addition to Song Henge.
After The Rogues is Highland Fling. I highlighted Donna Germano
a few years back when she was on MP3.com. She's back with a new
duo with her on hammer dulcimer and Susan Kidney on fiddle with
a beautiful set of Irish tunes that I featured this week in the
podcast #3. What a great combination.
Slainte!

CELTIC BAND FEATURE #1
=========================
"Bonny Portmore" by The Rogues
Smokin' bagpipes and driving percussion only begins to describe
a Rogues performance. Heart stirring music, performed like only
The Rogues can, will make your experience unforgettable.
Everyone becomes a Scot during a Rogues' show, and watch out,
you might be moved to jump up and dance before it's over. Through
their high-spirited and moving music, humour, and the best set
of knees this side of the Tweed, The Rogues create a Celtic
joyride with their blend of Scottish bagpipes and drums.

CELTIC CD FEATURE

"Harp and Shamrock" by Cady Finlayson
by Catherine L. Tully
Artist: Cady Finlayson
http://www.violincady.com/
Album: "Harp and Shamrock"
Year produced: 2004
After hearing Cady Finlayson's gorgeous fiddle-playing on the CD
Take Two (with Sean McCabe) my expectations for Harp and Shamrock
were high, and I was not disappointed. Cady's latest effort is
terrific and I found my only disappointment was that the CD had
to end!
With a good mix of music, Cady's band is every bit as skilled as
she is. You'll hear everything from hornpipe music to a waltz to
a song called Going to Milwaukee which is a fun, easy listen.
Don't miss the title track, Harp and Shamrock/Crock of Gold for
a funky, unique musical arrangement that still somehow manages
to have a traditional thread running through it.
There is enough going on in this CD to keep things interesting
without too much of a departure from the good stuff that people
expect in a Celtic album. You'll hear the reels and jigs, but
this is not background music. Save it for a day that you can
listen to it uninterrupted so you can enjoy it fully. It is
just that good.

CELTIC BAND FEATURE #2
=========================
"Jack Broke the Prison Door" by Highland Fling
The echoes of a fiddle ringing through the mists of the Scottish
Highlands travel through time to the Blue Ridge Mountains of
North Carolina. Susan Kidney on fiddle and Donna Germano on
Celtic harp bring a combination of traditional Scottish melodies
and new compositions to celebrate the beauty of two mountain
ranges united by a common heritage. Highland Fling combines
Celtic harp and fiddle, as well as guitar and hammered dulcimer,
to interpret lively dance tunes and haunting melodies of the
Scottish masters. Inspired by the beauty of the Blue Ridge
Mountains, Susan has written tunes named after such local areas
as Devil's Courthouse and Graveyard Fields, showing the close
relationship between her own Scottish heritage and the music of
those who have settled in the Southern Highlands. Donna's Celtic
harp and hammered dulcimer provide both a compliment and contrast
to the strains of the fiddle in lively dance tunes and beautiful
airs alike.

Shays Rebellion is new to the celtic music scene. Their
music is a delightful journey through traditional celtic
music with a hint of bluegrass and a wee taste of rock and
roll. The three-part harmony they create is 2nd to none.
The band includes: Don Calsyn (fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki,
bodhran and guitar), Cheryl Noble (flute and whistles) and
Corki Demers (guitar, mandolin and bodhran). They have
just completed their CD which is now available
Kilnaboy (added: 29-Aug-2005)
http://www.kilnaboy.co.uk/
Kilnaboy was hatched in the cold dank Feb of 2004.
Comprising of drunken boys on heat with a mission to spread
their own peculiar brand of dirty, filthy folkery pokery to
the world. Bringing traditional folk into line with the aid
of punk and roots undertones. The eclectic brand of upbeat
magic and madness will have you jumping from table to table
and flailing the dance floor wildly.
