2. 3 Pints Gone - "The Beaches of St. Valery"
http://www.3pintsgone.com/
http://www.mp3.com/3PintsGone?cm
=================================================

I first met 3 Pints Gone two years ago when they were known as
Wild Mountain Thyme. I saw them at the Mid-Missouri Renaissance
Festival and since then we've become great friends.

3 Pints Gone plays Celtic traditional-style folk songs at bars,
Celtic fairs and Renaissance festivals around the United States.
Their distinctive sound is full of high energy and harmony-rich
arrangements.  They entertain by telling stories through the
songs that leave the audience feeling like an old friend.

Last year at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival I was musing
about that. There are a lot of funny acts at faire. 3 Pints Gone
has their share of hilarious songs like "The Moose Song" and
"Scotland Depraved", but ye know it's their ballads that really
grab ye and that bring their fans back again and again.

Bill Masino is an Italian who sings like a Scotsman burdened by
hundreds of years of oppression in "The Beaches of St. Valery."
Bill told me that he thought this title track to their recent
album is "one of the most important songs written in the 20th
century." It's a powerful tale about the 2nd World War and the
heroes who fought and died, but were forgotten and one that will
leave you fighting back the emotions!

3. HOT CELTIC MUSIC CDS & MORE
Lunasa - "Lunasa"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005LN2I/thebards
=================================================

In October 1997, Ireland's all-star quintet Lúnasa released their
first CD 'Lúnasa', a mix of concert and studio tracks gathered
from their prolific year together. It was immediately hailed as
one of the finest, freshest recordings of Irish music in years,
called "moving, pulsating, and thrilling to the very marrow" by
Folk Roots and "a true must-have disc" by the Irish Voice. From
the start, Lúnasa met with instant acclaim. Their first album
became an immediate best-seller in Ireland, topping Hot Press'
folk charts and nominated one of the year's top ten by the Irish
Echo in the USA.

Since that auspicious beginning, Lúnasa has become one of the
most sought-after bands on the international Irish music scene.
The band's inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves are
steering Irish acoustic music into surprising new territory. On
their first American visit, word-of-mouth led to sold-out shows
and rave reviews. "A standing-room only crowd in New York
confirmed Lúnasa's reputation," wrote the Irish Voice." This is
the hottest Irish acoustic group on the planet."

4. Cianan - "Black Is The Color"
http://www.iconmusic.com/cianan/
http://mp3.com/cianan?cm
=================================================

Cianan draw their strength from both traditional folk training,
and modern live performance technology, offering a vibrant slant
on Celtic music. Featuring instruments such as the uilleann
pipes, the appalachian dulcimer, mandolin, low and high whistles,
recorders, cittern, fiddle, and guitar, the four-piece manage to
balance their traditional folk music origins with their modern
edge - drum loops, samples and sequencing. Playing a mix of
Irish, Scottish and original songs and tunes - along with some
better known radio fare - Cianan view traditional music as the
source of their inspiration, rather than their ultimate
destination.

"Black is the Color" is wonderful song best known from the
Southern Appalachian Mountains in the U.S., but it's believed
to be based on an 18th century English tune. Despite the origins
a number of Celtic bands have taken it to be their own and
transformed it into a marvelous Celtic love ballad as Cianan
has done combining mandolin, guitar, beautiful backup vocals
and so fantastic lead vocals to create a magically romantic song.

5. The Highland Clearances
http://www.theclearances.org/
=================================================

From roughly 1785 to the late 1850s, landowners in the Scottish
Highlands evicted small farmers on a massive scale and used the
land for sheep farms, which proved more profitable. This site
tells the stories of those evicted, from their perspective and
that of contemporaries such as Karl Marx and Harriet Beecher
Stowe. Articles describe the breakdown of clan society that led
to the Clearances, and how the complicity of locals and the
inaction of the Church helped the Clearances succeed. Some Scots
tried to resist eviction, but many more, encouraged by the
British government, emigrated to Canada and Australia. The
stories of these uprooted people live on in this site.
