Well this hadn't started out as a tribute issue. I was enjoying
some fine harp music when today I learned that Derek Bell,
harpist for the traditional Irish supergroup The Chieftains
passed away today.

I was looking for some great Celtic music for my Celtic harp
station when I came across HarpSong. HarpSong is a flute and harp
duo made up of the talents of Jennifer Grady (flute) and Karen
Almquist (harp and soprano). The duo performs throughout the
greater Willamette Valley of Oregon. HarpSong performs a variety
of styles including Celtic and Folk, as well as Classical,
Popular, and Holiday music.

The song that caught my ear is an old Irish hymn "Be Thou My
Vision". I first feel in love with this song after hearing David
Nevue's piano version. But as I was skimming for some great
songs, I put this one, and wham... I stopped skimming. I was
hypnotized and listened to it again three more times.

The text is the original, which was translated by Mary E. Byrne
and was published in 1905. It was versified by Eleanor Hull and
included in her Poem Book of the Gael. (1912).

Derek Bell is probably the most famous Celtic harpist after
Turlough O'Carolan. He's performed with The Chieftains for
a good thirty years, but he's also shared the magic of his
instrument as a solo artist here. "The Mystic Harp" is an
incredibly beautiful example of his work. It'll appeal to
traditional music lovers as well as those who love the
harping of artists like Loreena McKennit. A powerful and
moving album and one that will get much play on your CD
player.

After many years of performing the concert grand harp with
orchestras Victoria was invited to perform Celtic harp for a
popular dinner theater attraction. She fell in love with the the
beauty of performinc Celtic music.

She now owns several Celtic harps ranging from a 19 string lap
harp to the 36 string harp and performs regularly at Celtic
festivals. Victoria is also a talented vocalist and has performed
a wide range of operas and theater musicals. In addition to her
solo work, Victoria has recently toured and performed with
Roberta Flack, James Ingram and popular Irish performers Maura
Erskine and Billy Finnegan.

"Dancing Heart" is an beautiful original piece by Victoria
Schultz. It's listed as New Age, but it lakes all the extra fluff
which makes it even more exceptional. Just a woman and her Celtic
harp performing mesmerizing music together. This works perfectly
since the CD is designed for meditation with harp music.
