Slainte, Celtic music lovers!
ST PATRICK'S DAY APPROACHES
Just a few more days until St. Patrick's Day, the Christmas
of the Celts. We've decided on a fairly light schedule for
a change. Maybe this year, I'll actually spend more time
celebrating my birthday rather than playing music all day
with the Brobdingnagian Bards.
Speaking of St Paddy's Day, I wrote "A St Patrick's day
Poem" last year, if you'd like to check it out, go to
http://www.marcgunn.com/cgi-bin/bard_lore/jump.cgi?ID=110
And of course, my song "Happy Birthday from Ireland" makes
mention of this wonderful time of the year.

Hopefully, I'll be able to get my annual St. Patrick's Day
edition of the newsletter out on time. Still collecting a
bunch of wonderful websites featuring free downloadable
Celtic MP3s for St. Paddy's Day.
NORTH TEXAS IRISH FESTIVAL
At the last minute, I decided to take my sister and head up
to the North Texas Irish Festival. Really wish I'd planned
it sooner and could've stayed longer. We had a blast!
Saw a bunch of bands I'd first heard about on MP3.com,
like Brendan Nolan, who does one of the most amazing versions
of "Green Grow the Rashes O'".

My sister totally dug The Elders out from Kansas City. Her
comment, "Celtic rock is so much better than regular rock."
Well, The Elders put on one heckuva show with kids dancing
on the stage and couples dancing in the aisles.

I missed the Trinity River Whalers, but I did get to chat
a wee bit with Randy Christian while sharing drinks in the
hospitality lounge. They're still working on their first
CD, but I'm pretty sure I've got an to feature them in
in the near future.

Course, my perennial favorite, Ed Miller was there. Heard a
song I've heard him sing before. I forget the name, but I've
GOT to learn it. Absolutely beautiful! I could also tell Ed
was having a smashing time jamming with members of Carey
Street and even Cathie Ryan.

Course, Cathie was the one I was most anxious to see. I first
read about her in Dirty Linen. It peaked my interest. And I
wish I had caught her sooner, cuz we sat down at a table in
the hospitality room, and she was sitting there. Would've
loved to talk to her about an interview or better an MP3
feature! Ah well. At least I found out what all the hype
is about. Cathie Ryan is just enchanting with a beautiful
smile and voice to match it.

Oh, and I also finally got to see E.J. Jones' (formerly of
Clandestine) new band, The Willow Band. They were fantastic
as I knew they would be!

"Broken Hearted I'll Wander" by Dolores Keane & John Faulkner
http://amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000005CRV/thebards
Dolores Keane has been recording music since age five and was
one of the founding members of De Dannan. Together, with John
Faulkner, they have recorded several albums.
I picked up "Broken Hearted I'll Wander" during a Green Linnet
CD sale and am thrilled with the purchase. Fantastic traditional
Celtic songs and tunes. I love their vocals throughout. I'd like
to tell you a favorite track, but I can't seem to pinpoint one.
I love 'em all: "The Ploughboy", "Month of January", "Will Ye Go
to Flanders", "Tommy Peoples/Mary Shore", "Johnny Lovely
Johnny","The Low Low Lands of Holland", and even a mouth music
performance of "Eddie Curran's Favorite". This is traditional
Irish music without the overdone effects of just about every
band today.

"Cool Doctor" by Brothers 3
Brothers 3 performs traditional Celtic songs and dance music in
wide variety of musical settings from jazz and World Beat to
country-western, pop, and rock. Using over two dozen instruments,
and drawing on the collective experience of seven friends and
family members, we put on a fun, high-energy show that simply
has to be experienced!
I missed them at NTIF, but I've been hearing a LOT about this
band on the Texas Celtic music circuit. The "Cool Doctor" is a
set composed of "Cooley's Reel" and "Dr. Gilbert's Reel" in a
high-energy fusion setting that starts off like something outta
late-night cop drama or something. Great beat. The sound reminds
me of a tune I heard from the Old Blind Dogs, including some
of punchy start stops. With any luck, mayhaps I'll get to hear
the band live one day.
