Hi all,

I was recently asked for contact information for the Irish singer Mary
McGonigle. I hadn't heard her name in several years, and can't find anything
helpful on the Internet. I think that the last time I saw her was up in
Milwaukee Irish Fest, and vaguely recall that she was living in New York either
at the time or before.

Anyone know?

Thanks,
Maureen Smith

I am part of a production company run by Welsh comedians and as I have done
stand up in the US at various private functions over the years, I am under the
impression that there are many Welsh societies in the US who would welcome Welsh
performers.
If this is the case, it would be great to arrange a small tour to the US to
perform, and prosily make a documentary.
Do you have any contact details to assist me in pulling this off?

Calendr Castell Caerfilli / Caerphilly Castle Calendar 2010
My name is Fiona Thomas and I am the chair person of the Friends of School /
Cyfeillion Yr Ysgol, Ysgol Gynradd Gymareg Y Castell, Caerphilly. We are a group
of enthusiastic parents prepared to working to enhance the school lives of all
the children in the school.
I emailed many of you a year ago to tell you all about an exciting project we
were undertaking with the children of the school and Cadw.
We have produced a professional calendar for 2010 containing images of
Caerphilly Castle taken by the children of Ysgol Y Casetell. On the 22nd
October, we are holding an exhibition of the childrens work at the Great Hall,
Caerphilly Castle to officially launch the project.
We promised the children their calendar would be sold worldwide. To enure this
happens, we are appealing to Welsh people all over the world to support us by
buying calendars. This can be done by looking at the schools website
www.ysgolycastell.com and following the link to order a calendar via our paypal
account. Postage on multiple orders can be arranged. This might be a trip down
memory lane for some of you.
This project has become a labour of love. All proceeds will go directly towards
the old school hall which is undergoing redevelopment at the present time. This
hall will then be a combined school and community hall accessible to us all. A
true community venture.
If you have strong links with Caerphilly or just want to support a worthwile
Welsh project, please view the calendar on the website www.ysgolycastell.com or
contact me directly for more information. I will be happy to answer any
questions. Please include our story in any local newsletters or webpages you
might have.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for your support, Diolch yn fawr iawn.

ATTENTION ALL WELSH ORGANIZATIONS:
Welsh organizations already affiliated with the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu
Association (AWOs) are asked to send their updated contact information,
including mailing address, email and website to: Mona Everett, 1314 Woodvale
Drive, Madison, WI 53716 USA, or email it to mona_sydd_yma@..., as soon as
possible. The list becomes outdated when there is a change in the local
organization (new officers, etc.) and mail can be returned or misdirected.
(Requests for this information have already been mailed to both the postal and
email addresses on file, but not all are reaching the intended destinations. If
you have already updated your society's info, you will have received a
confirmation and you do not need to send another update.)
All Welsh organizations and societies are invited to become members of WNGGA,
by completing the membership application, available on the WNGGA website,
http://www.wngga.org/, and sending it to:
WNGGA Headquarters, Dr. Stacy Evans, Executive Director, P.O. Box 410,
Granville,
Ohio 43023, with a $50 one-time payment, which entitles the organization to a
lifetime membership in WNGGA. Member organizations receive the newsletter
(HWYL) and are entitled to vote during the Annual General Meeting, which is
held during the North American Festival of Wales (NAFOW). Perhaps the most
important benefit of joining WNGGA will be the opportunities for networking and
sharing of ideas among member societies, both at the annual NAFOW, and
throughout the year. By working together, we can all be better.
WNGGA works hard to support local Welsh societies and organizations.
Won’t you support WNGGA by joining now?

Saint David’s Day
time to start thinking about how you, your friends, schools and colleagues will
be celebrating our Patron Saint’s special day. Following the incredible success
of 2009’s civilian National Saint David’s Day Parade (NSDDP) when over ten
thousand enthusiastic participants and onlookers filled the streets of Cardiff,
there are two things that can be transferred to anywhere in the whole world to
help you feel part of this civilian event – singing the official song ‘Cenwch y
Clychau i Dewi’ (Launched last year at the Assembly by the Presiding Officer,
Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas and sung this year for the fourth consecutive year) and
creating a banner similar to the incredibly beautiful and photogenic
Pembrokeshire Banner which will soon be going to its permanent home in Saint
David’s Cathedral.
Copies of the song can be bought for Male Voice, Female Voice and Mixed Voice
(SATB) choirs (Ideal for Welsh ‘Gymanfa Ganu’ singing festivals), schools and
soloists and downloaded from www.ylolfa.com

Adirondack Park, NY,to host Welsh arts, culture and history
As part of its 2-year tour of the USA, ‘Turner to Cézanne – Masterpieces from
the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales’ will be at the Everson Museum of
Art in Syracuse, NY, from Oct 9, 2009 – Jan 3, 2010.
National Museum Wales counts among its treasures the Davies Collection, an
extraordinary group of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings that is
remarkable for its breadth and quality. Assembled between 1908 and 1923 by
sisters Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, the collection is exceptionally strong
in Realist and Impressionist works and includes masterpieces by, among others,
Cézanne, Daumier, Manet, Millet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and Van Gogh. Further
information http://www.everson.org/home.php
Just an hour’s drive away in Oneida County, the exhibition entitled ‘Welsh in
America’ will be at Remsen, New York, until November 2009. ‘Welsh in America’ is
a 12-panel exhibition, researched and produced by the Welsh Assembly Government
in New York, that tells the story of the Welsh contribution to life in America
from colonial days to the present. It is housed in Remsen’s historic Stone
Church which is listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic
Places.
Welsh immigration to the Remsen/Steuben area began over two hundred years ago in
1795 with fifteen families and continued well into the twentieth century. During
that time Remsen held a pre-eminent role in Welsh immigration to the United
States.
Remsen continues to celebrate its Welsh heritage and is part of a unique project
which is being carried out by the Remsen Development Corporation. ‘Ty Gwaith
Crefft’ will be a community fashioned around a railroad-oriented, mixed-use,
neighborhood in upstate New York in the early twentieth century and will include
artisans and small-scale fabricators from both Wales and New York State. The
project will interpret the history of Remsen and the legacy of Welsh immigration
to the area and will build social, cultural, and economic links between Wales
and the Welsh community in North America. For further info visit

Hello,

I am working on a project to assemble information about the life and work of
Irish poet and playwright Sigerson Clifford. His most famous poem is 'The Boys
of Barr Na Sraide', which was also put to music.

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information to find Online, other than a
very brief biography and a list of his books. I was hoping to find people who
could provide detailed info, even photos. etc.

Regards,
Wilfried F. Voss

Every year, the People's Choice Podcast Awards are held to find out
who the favorites are in podcasting. Like most awards competitions,
it's a popularity game. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was nominated
for the second year in a row. But in order to win, I need your votes
every day until November 30th.

Please do me a wee favor. Go to http://www.podcastawards.com and for
the ICMP for Best Podsafe Music.
Then, email your friends and ask them to vote as well.
Then, repeat and rinse until the end of the month.

A win in the Podcast Awards doesn't mean vast amounts of money or
fame, but it does show the world that you love Celtic music. And you
think it deserves attention. And until next year, if the Irish &
Celtic Music Podcast wins, it will get that much deserved attention.

Thanks a million.

Of course, when I was referring to Hebrew I was referring to a best case
scenario.

And Hebrew being a language of a great classic the Old Testament or Hebrew
Scriptures and all the rabbinic commentaries has a special allure that Latin
once had (and still does to a diminished degree). My father studied Latin
at school and so could read Virgil in Latin but he had only a passing,
corrupt , oral knowledge of Gaelic which was his father and grandfather's
native language.

But they were both -essentially- illiterate in Gaelic as they were not
taught the language.

So it is curious that my father and grandfather both being Gaels could read
and write in French, Latin and English but almost not at all in Gaelic.

When they went to school in Scotland (1890-1927) used Gaelic was
discouraged if not prohibited. Those who grew p in the great cities because
English dominant and Gaelic survived only as part of the oral and musical
culture. I became interested in Gaelic and Scots poetry chiefly because of
my interest in clan histories, slogans, songs piping and traditional music.

I cannot remember a time when I did not know Caisteal Folais Na Theine
(Foulis Castle Ablaze ) and Biodh eagal Dhe oirre! (Reverence you to God or
Dread God; the ancient clan Munro motto). My grandfather taught me to count
in Gaelic (and Punjabi too) by lining up my toy solders. He also taught me
elementary commands in both languages. In his stories he would often
punctuate his stories with Punjabi ("marv e" he is dead changa dost (good
comrade)..changa gori spahis (the good white soldier) 'covering fire day-do"
(give him covering fire) nan lao (bring bread; food); panee lao (bring
water) chai lao (bring tea). I remember these off the top of my head but if
I think about it I could remember more and naturally he knew so much more
than I because they ate, drink and slept with Indian Regiments of the 27th
Division and they had almost daily contact for five years. In another age I
would have been an NCO in a Highland regiment or in the Indian Army.

In his day Scottish Highlanders were expected to be the interpreters and go
betweens with the Dins (soldiers of the Indian Army) so he had some basic
oral competence in Punjabi (which is an Indo-European Language closely
related to Latin and Gaelic). They often went on scouting patrols with the
Dins and never spoke a word of English. They and the Punjabis communicated
in a Punjabi-Gaelic-English patois.

Educationally all the adults in my family were all English dominant, however
though I think our bilingual background and respect for Latin and French as
universal languages gave us a cosmopolitan interest in languages. My
father never discouraged me from studying Gaelic as a hobby but there is no
question he favored my studying Spanish, Portuguese and German formerly as
he considered these to be culture languages with great utility. For that
reason I never studied a single day in Scotland; my father considered
Scotland to be part of our past. He was not against Gaelic in the sense of
being hostile but he was convinced that "English was the language of the
banks and the long-range guns." In other words as the Romans won the war
in Gaul so the English and English-speaking Lowlanders won their wars so
Latin, French and Gaelic were (the old pre-Flodden languages of the court)
were dethroned. 'He believed that Lingua Francas were languages based upon
high culture or empire; minority languages were doomed to be swept away or
assimilated like Gaulish or Old British (a native language of the Scottish
lowlands).

Many people date the decline of Gaelic to the Highland Clearances or
Culloden but my father thought the decisive movement was Flodden (1513) when
the last Gaelic-speaking King of Scotland (James IV) was killed. At that
time most of the Scottish Roman Catholic aristocracy could speak French,
Gaelic and read and write in Latin or French. A whole generation of Scots
were wiped out in that battle and it may have changed the cultural history
of Scotland as well.

Mary Queen of Scots, for example, could not speak English (she was a native
speaker of French and could read and write Latin) but as far as I know she
knew little or no Gaelic. When she spoke with her friends among the Highland
Chiefs she probably spoke in French or Latin. This probably explains part of
her alienation from her own people; it was more than just religion.

Gaelic is hurt by the fact that

1) it is not a true national language (unlike Welsh) ; it one is the
ancient ancestral languages of the native Gael, Pict and Briton.

2) It's hinterland of Gaelic speakers has diminished almost to the
vanishing point; once less than 50% of a population speaks a language there
is no language majority to immerse oneself in.

3) 80% of Gaelic speaking people intermarry with non Gaelic speakers
and most do not live in Gaelic speaking communities. Some of their children
will be Gaelic speakers but many if not most will not be.

4)       Planned Parenthood has come to the Scottish Islands and Highlands;
at one time a high birth rate helped offset the high immigration rate but
this is not true any longer. I read that there are scarcely 2000 Gaelic
speaking children living in households in which both parents are native
Gaelic speakers. No language has a long future if it does not have
demographic vitality. The desire for independence came too late for French
Quebec and I think there is little chance that Scotland will ever vote to
become an independent country especially as non Scottish ethnics emigrate to
Scotland. They, like immigrants to French Canada, will have no interest in
Scottish Gaelic culture or Scottish Independence.

5) The Gaels are very religiously divided embracing different sects of
Christianity. I could be wrong but essentially I have observed there is a
Roman Catholic minority in some places and Evangelical Christians in
another. This division means that Gaels do no have a strong unified
religious tradition to sustain them and unite them.

6) The decline in the Scottish Regiments and Territorial units is
another factor. I have heard it said that the Army discouraged the use of
Gaelic but on the other hand when my grandfather served in the Argylls it
was the most Scottish institution he was ever associated with bar none.
There is no question the Scottish Regiments kept piping and promoted a
pride in Scottish national feeling In the First World War there were
hundreds of volunteers from Nova Scotia in my grandfather's Regiment (the
1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) who were native Gaelic
speakers. English may have been the language of command but at the squad
level they men spoke and sang as they pleased. There was an active piping
culture and many companies -all recruited from the Highlands and Islands
were predominately Gaelic-speaking. In fact the only education in Gaelic my
grandfather ever received was while in the Army. What Gaelic he could read
was from the Psalms and the New Testament which was the only Gaelic book he
ever saw (or owned). But he really couldn't read; he used it as a memory
aid it seems to me. He really just memorized some psalms and some portions
of the Bible. He could not write them out properly so he was for all
intents and purposes illiterate. (though of course he could read and write
English reasonably well for a person with only an elementary education; he
went to sea at age 8.

At one time the Churches were a very important community and educational
force for Gaelic if not the most important. I don't think any one will
disagree that Church attendance and participation has declined in Scotland
though it Gaels in general have high attendance rates than the general
population. One place Gaelic thrived was in the hymns and prayers of the
people.

Also I believe the decline in church attendance tends to diminish the use of
Gaelic and well as the decline (in young people) in the interest in
traditional music.

The allure of English-speaking pop culture is very great. Youth only
interested in movies , video games and computers tend to be English
dominant.

On the plus side, Scottish Gaels are more literate than at anytime in modern
history and Scottish Gaelic is popular

and fashionable in a way it hasn't been in centuries.

Gaelic is available on the Internet and via mass media, This allows heritage
speakers to support the language and retain or regain the use of the
language.

But the decline of the Scottish birthrate to ZPG or even Negative Population
Growth guarantees there will be a diminishing number of native speaking
children.

So by the 22nd century Gaelic may go the way of Manx and exist only in
folkloric tradition. I reverently hope this is not the case but I am being
realistic. That worse case scenario is probably more likely than a
Hebrew like resuscitation.

By the 22nd Century if present population trends continue not only Gaelic
will be endangered but other European languages as well.

French and Italian, for example may become minority languages in their own
hinterlands.

As incredible as that seems, it is a real possibility if one looks at birth
rates, assimilation rates and immigration rates to Europe.

Demography is destiny. The hands that rock the cradles rule the word and
it is their mother tongue that shall endure because tomorrow belongs to the
big battalions.

A seal fein fuair an t-eineach HONOUR has had its own day,

Ag so an dile dheireadhach This is the final flood

A dhuid fa chre do chadal that shut your sleep under clay

Rug a re go Roghadal. That brought his life span to Rodel.

Hebrew sadly is a special case- there were so many immigrants from
Europe and natives that Hebrew was the only way they cld talk to each
other(Yiddish did not include the middle eastern Jews). Irish was
being taught much earlier but it didn't take the same way because
people could speak English.

It's amazing how fast Hebrew became a mother tongue - but hard to
emulate.

Hebrew sadly is a special case- there were so many immigrants from
Europe and natives that Hebrew was the only way they cld talk to each
other(Yiddish did not include the middle eastern Jews). Irish was
being taught much earlier but it didn't take the same way because
people could speak English.

It's amazing how fast Hebrew became a mother tongue - but hard to
emulate.

Dear Todd: I am delighted to know that Manx has be resurrected ; if it can
be done with Hebrew it can be done with Manx. It is all a matter of
making it the lingua franca of a family or community.

I wish you all the luck in the world. I was vaguely aware that there were
some movements to preserve the language or restore it. I know recordings
were made of the last fluent native speakers.

Manx music and Manx songs are very special as is Ellan Vanin herself. I
have known a few Manxmen in my life including men who fought along side my
grandfather's Regiment in the Struma Valley (they served in the 27th
Division together). I visted the Menin Gate with one of the last veterans
of the 27th Division and he was a Manxman.

I have read some Manx songs and it seems very similar to Irish Gaelic or
Scottish Gaelic but especially the "English phonetics" of the Book of the
Dean of Lismore.

Irish knew what the Manx speaker was saying. They may miss a word or
two, but the context was readily known. We also had two Welsh speakers
that year, and all of the Celtic speakers jumped in a round table
discussion about the languages that the public absolutely loved. Of
course, the Welsh speakers and the Gaelic speakers couldn't communicate,
but they were very aware that they shared a huge number of common words.
In any case, the last fully fluent Manx speaker only died in the 70's.
There were still several mostly fluent speakers alive then, and they
have managed to pull the language from the edge of extinction to the
point today where there are more than a hundred fluent speakers, with
several native speakers (meaning children who learn it as a first
language). A couple of thousand can speak it with some proficiency. They
are a very interesting group and quite a lot of fun.

Well, Bruce

Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) is pronounced “Gallic”; my grandfather who was
born in the Scottish Highlands in 1886 often referred to his native language
as Highland Scots (as opposed to Lallans or Lowland Scots). He said it was
a dialect of Irish Gaelic (pronounced Gael-ic) and many people called
Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) “ERSE “(Irish) when he was young but he never
did.

He never considered “Erse” to be denigrating. Most Highlanders consider
themselves to be Gaels and to have racial ties to Irish Gaels as well as the
Cymric (Welsh/British people).

My grandfather often said “the Scots and the Irish are the same people
except half of them don’t know it and the other half don’t want to know!.”
He was referring to the attitude of so many who wanted to out English to the
English and hide their Irish/Celtic roots. That was a very common attitude
in the late Victorian or Edwardian period in Britain. My people by the way
always considered themselves Islanders or Highlanders and referred to
Ireland and Scotland as “the Isles”. Their homeland was their native
place (Cioch Mhor) or the Gaidhealteachd (Highlands) and sometimes they
spoke of “Alba” (the land of the mountains white) as Scotland. They also
called it Scotia and Caledonia but those were poetic usages I think.

They rarely if ever, quite innocently, referred to themselves as “British”
because to them British people were their WELSH cousins and they themselves
were not Welsh. They never, it hardly needs to be said, spoke of themselves
as English or Europeans. They were Highlanders, Islanders or Gaels.
People who lived on the Continent or An Roinn Eorpa were the other though of
course it seemed to me my grandfather was aware of his kinship to the Gauls
of old. He often called his kilt the “Garb of Auld Gaul.”

The English (or Sassunachs) and the Europeans were the other. My Auld Pop
referred to English women, for example, as “South o’ the Dyke Lassies” and
routinely called English “Saxon.” As a joke he used to say anyone who
married French women or Italians or Spanish were marrying lassies ‘very much
to South o’ the Dyke’ but aye closer to Rome. As a boy most of the priests
in my grandfather’s region were educated at the Scots College in Rome or the
Scots College of Valladolid (Spain); some were Irish Franciscans. He had a
very strong sense of belonging to Christendom and believing in the unity of
Christendom in way many Calvinists did not. Of course, many people in my
family intermarried with Irish people in Glasgow and I know there were a lot
of Tallies (Scottish born Italians) in my grandfather’s parish in Govan.
Glasgow has long been a very cosmopolitan town not unlike Brooklyn or
London.

The Scots language was always called Beurla Albannach (Anglo-Scottish or
Scots). “Gnath-bheurla na H-Eireann” was (Anglo-Irish). His language he
always called ‘the Gallic” or “Highland Scots.”

Manx Gaelic (spelled in a phonetic English pattern) has been extinct,
except in an artificially restored way, since the early 20th or late 19th
century. It appears to be very close to the Scottish Gaelic of the Western
Isles and Argyll.

Today I think it clear that Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic are two
languages as separate as say Portuguese and Spanish but they are also very
closely related. I have heard many Irish scholars say that Scottish Gaelic
is (or was) a dialect of Irish Gaelic

The habit of calling Irish Gaelic “Irish” seems to be a modern one from the
dates of the Free State. It is a simple fact that “Irish” and “Ireland”
are not Irish words! Gaeilge is the Irish Gaelic word for Irish Gaelic.

As a final note my grandfather always called many city girls “paltry women”.
“They wadna survive a Highland winter until Easter.” He was of the opinion
that healthy, strong and beautiful women were well-rounded and solidly
built. To him the ideal woman was a woman with womanly, matronly look. I
suppose our ideals of beauty have been shaped by the childless or nearly so
Hollywood ideal. If we honored motherhood more we would not put the figures
of childless teenagers as the ideal.

He had nothing but scorn for boyish bony gamin-like women. To him they were
hardly women at all. Personally, I tend to agree with him.

Mise le meas (that’s me with respect)

I hope you'll all forgive me for bringing up an old question, just to
satisfy my curiosity.

Linguists speak of three languages which form one half of the Celtic
language family group. These three gaelic languages are
*Irish Gaelic (Gaeilge)
*Manx Gaelic (Gailck)
*Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig)

The habit in Ireland is to call Irish Gaelic simply "Irish". Scottish Gaelic
is called simply "Gaelic".
That is not a rule, a regulation or a definition, it is an observable
habit..

I assume - it's only an assumption - that Manx Gaelic is called "Manx
Gaelic" in Ireland. If anyone here KNOWS definitively, what the Irish call
it, I'd be pleased to know it, too.

I'm curious about the habit in Scotland (and on the Isle of Man). Does
anyone KNOW what the three languages are called there? Again, I'd appreciate
knowing.

Bruce

Hi Bruce

I think you'll get some variables on this depending on region.

For much of my life I lived on the Isle Of Mull in Scotland.
and we said

Scots Gaelic - a word pronounced "gallic"
and some made it sound like "garlic"

Irish Gaelic - actually called "gaelic"

Manx Gaelic - called "manx"

Now in Co. Sligo, Ireland where I live

Scots Gaelic called - "scot's gaelic"
sometimes called "old gaelic"

Irish Gaelic called - "irish"
but there are two Gaelic languages here
"irish" as taught in schools and
"old irish" that some traditionalists are fighting to hold onto

Manx Gaelic called "manx"

To those of you I met at the Games, a big HI <waving>, and I hope you had as
much fun as I did!
One special lady, Arlene Radasky, author of The Fox and fellow fan club member,
came by to see me at Seaside.
I have enjoyed meeting many of you at the Scottish Festivals this year--thank
you so much for stopping by. I always love chatting with Steve‘s fans.
Also, I want to send out a special thank you to those of you who have sent me
the names of venues to contact.

Etherean Music
Dear Steve McDonald Fan Club Members,
Etherean Music has had financial challenges for many years, and Steve has stood
by us as a true friend and music partner. Our efforts to improve Etherean
Music's financial situation have not yet had the results we were hoping for. We
are unable to support Steve as we would like. Steve and Etherean Music both
agree that giving him all his rights back is the right move so he can pursue a
new beginning for his career. Thankfully Jackie has been diligently growing the
fan club and promoting Steve's music at numerous Scottish Festivals. I am
grateful to be passing on Steve's label management to someone with such a loving
and supportive heart and capable hands. We are all working diligently to assure
a smooth transition. All CDs can now be ordered through Jackie and Steve
McDonald Music and the Fan Club. Thank you for continuing to support Steve and
his music. I know Steve is working on a new release, and we wish he and Jackie
tremendous growth and success with all the music and the live tour they are
working to put together. Like the Scottish spirit, this music will live on!
With Blessings and Good Wishes,

This Month‘s Sweepstakes Winner:
The Sweepstakes contest winner is this month is Teresa Casio . Congratulations,
Teresa! You’ve won an autographed CD!
Please contact me at jackie@... with your snail mail
address and choice of the new Sons of Somerled, Highland Farewell, Legend or
Scotland the Brave so I can send your autographed CD to you!
Those of you who didn't win are entitled to a big, disappointed :::sigh:::.
However, the good news is that a brand-new contest is already up and running at
www.stevemcdonaldfanclub.com . Read the lyric excerpt, and name the song it is
from to get your name in the drawing.

So that was great news for Teresa...but how about the rest of you, now that last
month’s sweepstakes is over? Well, those of you who didn't win should not
despair: I've still got plenty of prizes, and I'm going to continue to give one
away each month, which means more opportunities to win! So if you've been
putting off entering, now is the time!

There is a new song for the Sweepstakes!
Here is the lyric:
“He came to Iona

With his brother, Columba

To build a church

In the name of Christ…â€

And I bet those of you who have listened the Stone of Destiny CD already know
the answer! Best of luck to everyone who enters (I wish it could be all of
you!).
One entry is good for each monthly drawing, so if you haven't entered yet, what
are you waiting for?
We'll be drawing a winner at the end of every month. But all of last month’s
contest entries have been tossed out. The first of each month the new
sweepstakes starts. Go to http://www.stevemcdonaldfanclub.com now and fill out
the form for a chance to win.

If you want more information, all of the nitty-gritty details are on the
website. Click on over to www.stevemcdonaldfanclub.com , click on the Over To
You button, then the Sweepstakes button, and get your name in the contest. Best
of luck to you all!

Our Forum is a section where members of the fan club can write on any relevant
topic, such as Steve’s music, concerts, albums, and what you would like on the
website. The topics can be chosen by the fans themselves, and you could reply to
each other’s suggestions and opinions in a thread.
Also, please keep those Forum Questions for Steve coming! He loves to hear from
you, and answers all your questions. There are two pages on the Forum, one for
questions for Steve (please keep your forum questions to only being about his
music, albums and gigs/tours) and one for fan discussions.

Check it all out at www.stevemcdonaldfanclub.com and click on the Forum.

On The Road Contest News
Arlene Radasky, you are this month’s On The Road winner!! You have done so
much to spread Steve’s music to everyone! Thank you from both Steve and me!
Here is a link to Arlene’s website www.radasky.com please visit it, and read
her book The Fox! And here is her latest blog:
Jackie, Steve and The Fox

Almost two weeks ago I went to Ventura to meet a friend for the first time and
go to some Highland Games for the first time. It was a weekend of firsts and I
was glad it happened.
The friend is Jackie Bishop. I met her online through Steve McDonald. Actually,
it was when I emailed Etherean for permission to use some verses from his songs
in my book, The Fox. Along with permission, Dorie sent me to Jackie, the
President of the Steve McDonald Fan Club.
She and I began an online friendship, both living in Southern Calif. And hopping
we could meet one day. As time went on and I finished my book, I sent both Dorie
and Jackie a copy, in thanks for helping me.
Jackie sent me her finished book, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and we bonded in
another realm, we are both writers, and darned good ones at that! I am letting
her know what I did to get my book out into the world and she is in the process
of thinking about her next steps.
She has been a fan of Steve McDonald for years and got to know him and gained
his trust because of the great way she handled the Fan Club. Etherean has come
to the decision to close and Steve asked Jackie to handle his music distribution
in the United States! Talk about one happy lady! And I agree, Steve could not
have made a better choice.
She is excited and coming up with ways to get his name and music widely known.
She is looking into venues for a concert tour and, supported and accompanied by
her husband Dan, started attending all the Highland Games within their reach.
And so the SeaSide Highland Games in Ventura became our midway meeting place.
She had invited me to bring my book, The Fox, so I had several copies with me to
sell. I also had bookmarks, postcards and stuff, mine and other authors (we
support each other in every way we can) to hand out. I found out that if I could
have taken credit cards, I would have sold more. However, I did sell two books,
bought some signed and not signed Steve McDonald CDs (some of which I need to
design a contest around) and just plain had a great time talking to Jackie and
Dan.
I am also very impressed with the hard work she is doing. She designed a new
business card and the banner she uses, gives away an embroidered canvas bag with
a purchase of 3 CDs, steps out to get to know everyone around her, while
marketing Steve’s wonderful music all the time.
I am so happy to have been able to meet her, face-to-face, talk and leave with a
hug. Her life has taken on a new challenge with Steve's music and I hope to be
able to help in a small way by introducing Steve to those who read my book, The
Fox. If you have visited my website, you know how important his music is to me
and now I know the person who is distributing it! Whoot!
So if you have listened to the podcast of The Fox and have heard Steve’s
music, or read The Fox and would like to purchase Steve’s CDs, contact
jackie@... or Steve McDonald's Fan Club.

We need some more of Steve’s fans to blow their own horn!
I know that everyone who loves Steve’s music tells their friends about it, and
shares his music. C’mon now! Write in and let me know, and I will post your
stories, and enter you to win an autographed CD!
The Steve McDonald On The Road Team is a very special group of Steve’s
listeners who help promote his music. I know through your e-mails to me that
many of you are already doing this by telling friends about his music, posting
about his music on message boards, and asking for his CDs in stores. Thank you
all for your efforts! We’re thrilled by your support, and I'd love to
encourage you to continue to spread the word about his music. On The Road Team
membership is open to all of his listeners, and benefits include your name
listed on the front page of the On The Road Team section of the Fan Club
website, and a chance to win autographed CDs in a monthly drawing for On The
Road Team members only. Joining is easy...visit the On The Road Team section and
click on "Invitation" to see what you need to do. Whether you decide to join the
team or not, we appreciate your support!

Congratulations to the Trust for setting up such an incredibly interesting

David Thompson Welsh Canadian Explorer
Regarding David Thompson, I am also an admirer of his accomplishments. I have
found that he was born in Anglesey, I do not remember the source of that
information.
TV Station KSPS of Spokane, Washington have made a ducumentary called "Uncharted
Territory" which will be premier on November 04, 2009 at 7.00pm. The St.David's
Welsh Society of Edmonton, Alberta donated $5,000 towards the film, they have
also built a cabin at Devonian Botanical Gardens in Devon, Alberta to
commemorate his achievements.
I have just returned from Creston, British Columbia, in the the tourist
information brochure I read he was the first white man to see Kootenay Lake. As
I traveled past the source of the Columbia River I marveled at his persistence
at finding the course of that great river in a maze of mountains and other
rivers.
In the Canadian Geographic of October 2009, I read that "The Writings of David
Thompson, Volume 1, The Travels 1850 version" edited by William E.Moreau of
McGill-Queens University Press and Champlain Society is for sale. Volume 1 is
available of a new three volume edition.

Calling all Price/Burtons
Calling all Price/Burtons. I am researching my Price/Burton ancestors, my late
grandfather was Esiah Price and he had many brothers and half-sisters
named Thomas, Jack (John), Amos, possibly Jacob, Nell (Ellen?),
Emily and Tilly (unsure of her full name..Matilda?). I believe Esiah to
have been born in Newtown, Montgomeryshire; also Thomas but I do not
know where the rest of the family were born. I would be very pleased
and delighted to hear from anyone with any knowledge which may help me.
Thank you so much.

SAN FRANCISCO/BAY AREA WELSH CONVERSATION COURSES
Now brace yourselves, I don't want to shock anyone, but you should not be
disappointed if you find that you are actually able to converse in "the language
of heaven" after just a short time in class. These classes aren't taught in a
lecture style. Instead, you will be meeting new friends and sharing ideas with
them from day 1 - all through the medium of one of the most beautiful languages
in the world.
These beginning conversation classes will be taught in 4 week sessions with
optional "field trip/activity based" practice sessions offered every other week.
The first will start in mid September followed by various 1 day courses on
specific topics which will be appropriate for Welsh speakers at all levels. So,
if you already have some Welsh at your comand you will be very welcome to join
in the adventures.
Right now classes are planned for San Francisco but other locations may be
considered depending on student demographics. The day of the week/weekend is
also flexible based on student needs.

scheme works!

Bryce MacPhearson, a highland warrior, kidnaps Akira MacKenzie on her
wedding day to honor a promise he made to his dying father. While
Akira's strength in the Lord becomes a witness to Bryce, she struggles
to
overcome her anger and resentment when he forces her to wed him, hoping
to end a half-century feud between their clans. While Akira begins
to forgive, and Bryce learns to trust, a series of murders leaves a
trail of unanswered questions, confusion, and a legacy of hate that
once again rises between their clans. Clearly, a traitor is in their
midst. Now the one man Akira loves no longer trusts her, and her own
life is in danger. Can Bryce look beyond his pain and seek the truth?
Will Akira discover the threat against her before it's too late? How
will God turn a simple promise into bountiful Highland blessings?

Designer sues Riverdance duo
01 November 2009 By Susan Mitchell

Riverdance duo Moya Doherty and John McColgan have vowed to fight claims by
fashion designer Jen Kelly that they used his designs without permission.

The owners of the Riverdance show said they would vigorously defend the case,
which will be heard in the High Court this week.

Kelly, a haute couture designer, is suing Riverdance promoters Abhann
Productions and Tyrone Productions for breach of contract and is seeking
royalties from Riverdance's profits.

Kelly designed and made hundreds of outfits that were used in the Riverdance
shows in the mid-1990s. After receiving initial design fees for the show
costumes, Kelly claimed he was paid about €60 in royalties per performance until
2001.

Kelly has claimed Riverdance continued to use and modify his designs without
licence or payment. McColgan and Doherty claimed an agreement was reached in
November 1999 under which the designer accepted a substantial sum to finalise
his involvement.

McColgan said there was never ``any unauthorised exploitation of Kelly's designs
by Riverdance''. He said Kelly's designs had not been used since 2001.

Emmy-award winning costume designer Joan Bergin was hired as the costume
designer for Riverdance in 1999. It is understood that Bergin will give evidence
in the High Court case which starts on Thursday.

The action is the latest in a series of legal claims brought against Doherty and
McColgan.

Michael Flatley, the show's original lead performer and one of the original
choreographers, sued for a share of the show's profits. After years of legal
wrangling Flatley received a substantial sum in an undisclosed settlement.

Pat Faulkner, a former managing director of Abhann Productions, received a
multimillion euro settlement from Abhann in 2000 after taking a legal action
against the firm.

As well as his work on Riverdance, Kelly has created outfits for the singer
Enya, President Mary McAleese and Mary Robinson, her predecessor.

He has retained DFMG Solicitors who successfully represented Karen Millen in its
dispute with Dunnes Stores.

The supermarket chain was found to have copied Karen Millen designs.

Passing on this important e-mail.

Apologies if you are a member of many various yahoo groups and e-mail

Hi lovely people,

Please see the details regarding the benefit below:

Date: November 14, 2009
Time: 3:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Location: Plaza Pub, 1605 New York Ave, Arlington, TX, (817) 460-7346

The benefit is for Ryan and Heather (Watkins) Skagen. They recently
experienced a tragic loss when their 9 day old daughter, Aura Kay
Skagen, passed away due to complications from a 36 hour delivery. The
benefit is our local Celtic community's way to help with the financial
burden now faced by Ryan and Heather. Thanks to the efforts of Deanna
Smith-Scotland and Craig Scotland, there will be numerous items for a
raffle and silent auction. Ed, the owner of the Plaza Pub, is having
food catered in as his "donation to the cause". To partake, we'll ask
for a donation.

The musical line up for the benefit will be:

4:00 - 4:45 - Beyond the Pale
5:15 - 6:00 - Bards' Crossing
6:30 - 7:30 - Needfire

Immediately after the benefit, the Trinity River Whalers will start
performing at 9:00 p.m. They will be including a tribute to Curt Marcus
(Heather's uncle who just recently passed from a fatal heart attack). I
understand there will be a slide presentation with photos of Curt and
long time friends and family. The Whalers will be performing songs that
are particular favorites of Curt's. I'm sure there will be lots of
stories and toasts floating around the Pub that evening as friends and
family gather to talk about their favorite memories of Curt.

Many thanks to everyone who is donating items for the benefit and to the
musicians and Shadow Walter for sharing their time and talents with us.
Thank you SO MUCH for your generosity!

Please come out to the benefit, help with donations - and then stay
afterwards for the Whalers. It'll be a night to remember!!! Spread the
word............

Cheers,

On Saturday November 14, 2009 (3:30-7:30 pm) a benefit is being held at
the Plaza Pub in Arlington Texas. This benefit is for the Skagen Family.
On October 5, Aura Kay Skagen was born to Heather and Ryan Skagen. She
was beautiful and wanted, and loved beyond measure. She lived a mere 9
days. She was a gift to her parents, family and the world, as her last
gift was the donation of organs and tissue. Aura has enabled 6 people to
have a second chance at life. We are raising money to help her parents
cover the expenses that have been incurred. We hope that the Plaza Pub
will be full and we will raise a ton of money!

Many of you know Heather Watkins Skagen, she has been volunteer at NTIF
for many years, in fact she has been attending since she was 2 years
old. She served as a vendor coordinator in the Automotive building for
several years. She was married at the festival in March of 2009.

Here's where you come in....if you are in a band , and can send cds for
a raffle, If you are an artist and can send a piece of art for a silent
auction, a vendor, who wishes to donate merchandise, if you have
tickets to a sporting event and would like to donate them....please feel
free to contact me. We ask that you keep Aura, her family and the people
who received her organ and tissue donations in your thoughts and
prayers. We are sending this to our facebook, and myspace friends, as
well as our artist and vendor friends all over the country, and around
the world. Please forgive us if you get this more than once.

Thank you all!

7N Quotes:
"Explosive Seven Nations blows Palace into orbit ... you'd be hard

powerful self-penned tunes and transcendent live shows. A musical force
to be reckoned with, Seven Nations' day has come." - Albany Times-Union

"Arguably the best independent band in America." - Watauga Democrat

"Seven Nations is blazing a new path in the "indie" music world for
others to follow. Rarely has there been a CD with such variety so
skillfully played, a testament to the multi-talented Seven Nations." -
Brigid's Feast

"Full of hooks, addictive melodies, and precise musicianship, Seven
Nations may be the next frontrunners for the summer tour feel-good band
of the new millennium." - MusicBlitz

"The music was riveting ... folks were dancing in the aisles ... the
cheers were deafening." - Independent Mail

"Seven Nations, which melds bagpipes and fiddles with blazing electric
guitars and drums ... exited their tour bus and walked in to a standing
ovation." - San Francisco Chronicle

"Absolutely hypnotic!" - The Item

"Wow, what a discovery! Each song is laden with hooks and melodies that
stick in your brain, thanks to songwriter Kirk McLeod, who pens the best
lyrics since Phil Lynott. This is the stuff of legends."
- Chaos Realm

"The band's music is a highly textured blend of sounds, tones, and
emotions, all uniting a common theme. " - Jacksonville Times-Union

"Seven Nations taught a crowd of nearly 10,000 one important lesson:
bagpipes rock." - Lancaster Intelligencer Journal

"Not only does this music make you want to get up and move to the beat,
but the band's overwhelming abundance of spirit and energy keeps their
audience begging for more." - St. Augustine Record

"One of America's soon-to-be-most-widely-recognized Celtic bands." -
Creative Loafing

"Billed by Planet Radio DJs as the "Dave Matthews Band with bagpipes,"
the five man group takes rock and roll, Celtic, and folk music and turns
them upside down." - Indie Music.com

"...if such a thing is possible, the band's stage shows are even more
energetic than their recordings."
-Rambles Magazine

"The packed house chanted and rocked with enthusiasm. When the
opportunity comes to see them again, I know I'll be there." - Global
Music Evolution

"Seven Nations could do for a Celtic and pop music mix what the Squirrel
Nut Zippers did for rocked-up swing." - Denver Post

"This is a group to watch for in the future." - Green Man Reviews
