InSpain (Irish Network Spain):
your date with Ireland in the heart of Spain.

  <http://europeanirish.com/wiki/index.php>
<http://europeanirish.com/wiki/index.php> [phpwiki]
<http://europeanirish.com/wiki/index.php> Wouldn't it be great to meet many
other Irish people in Spain? Imagine an Irish meet-up for Irish people living in
Spain - to share their ideas, thoughts and to get to know one another.

Add to it, all Spanish people interested in Irish Activites and Ireland.

Well That's what this is. On the weekend of the All-Ireland Gaelic Football
Final - 18th to 20th September, Madrid will host this first social meeting of
Irish people in Spain.

As you may know, one of the aims of EuropeanIrish, is to establish links between
the Irish/Ireland-lovers and the Irish events related to each country in
Continental Europe. And this requires a deep study of the relevant social groups
in each area. Not so long ago, the EuropeanIrish team in Spain started
developing a new venture called ‘InSpain’ (Irish Network Spain), a platform
hosted by EuropeanIrish that gathers and provides coverage of all the news
related to Ireland and the Irish in Spain.

<http://www.europeanirish.com/news_spanish.php?news_id=1994>

GAA:
European Hurling & Camogie Championships – Zürich Round

GAA: Switzerland wouldn’t normally spring to mind when thinking about
Ireland’s greatest game, but the financial capital of Zürich will reverberate
to the clash of the ash on July 11th, as the penultimate round of hurling’s
European championship takes place that weekend. Belgium GAA are poised to lift
the trophy for the first time in the competition’s history, but hoping to
throw a spanner in the works will be last year’s winners Luxembourg, and the
hosts Zürich.

Zürich will also host their first ever camogie match as the final round of the
European championship, with a team made up almost exclusively of non-Irish
players. Luxembourg are current leaders of the camogie championship, after wins
in Belgium and Luxembourg, but a win for Zürich should see them claim their
first ever title.

Last night a mistakenly sent a message to this group. I apologize to everyone.

In sending an email, I typed a wrong letter in the "To:" field, and
my email program auto-completed the address as
"celticcafe@yahoogroups.com" instead of the email address I had
intended. I was foolish not to be paying enough attention, and I
didn't notice my mistake. I take full responsibility for this. But
perhaps it should not be quite so easy to post messages to the group.

PRESS RELEASE: FLOOK announce one-off gig in BELFAST

As youre undoubtedly aware, the musical phenomenon that was FLOOK
officially decided to call it a day in late 2008.
After much arm twisting however, theyve agreed to play a one off
concert, as part of the biggest event ever to hit the island of
Ireland the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge (13-16 August 2009).

As the Gateway to the Tall Ships, Custom House Square in Belfast will
play host to a veritable feast of fantastic folk, trad, roots and
world music over the four day period, culminating in what is turning
out to be possibly the most exciting evening of traditional music this
year.

The Titanic World Ceilidh runs from 8pm-12midnight on Sunday 16th
August and features Brian Finnegan, Sarah Allen, Ed Boyd and John Joe
Kelly (aka FLOOK!) PLUS very special guests.

Eager not to miss the chance to film this unique event, BBC Blas Ceoil
will be hosting the evening and also presenting a variety of special
guests. Contractually we cant give you the details of who all those
people are just yet but if folk, roots and traditional music are
your cup of tea, we guarantee you wont find a more exciting line up
this year!

Tickets are priced at a recession busting 12 each and are available
from http://www.gotobelfast.com/tall_ships_belfast_2009/entertainment.aspx

Los Angeles Taffia
It's interesting to read of the 'taffia' in Los Angeles.
They may watch and support Welsh rugby in each others garages but do,
from what I can tell, nothing to enhance Wales or Welsh culture in Tinsel Town.
The Welsh Church has been a part of the Welsh scene in Los Angeles for 120 years
and is truly the very last vestige of Welsh culture in the whole of Southern
California.
We are now reduced to maybe 10 people coming on Sunday. Our average age is above
65 years.
Twenty years ago our Gymanfa Ganu, held twice year at that time, saw up to 300
attendees, now we are very fortunate to see 150 people once a year. Our Saint
David's Day celebration, where we often bring in artists from Wales, is
similarly diminishing in attendance. I read sometime ago, and here I paraphrase,
the Welsh celebrities in California tout their Welshness when it suits and
benefits them and on days of international rugby. Hmm! I wonder.

Did you know that the first American novel," The Journal of Penrose, Seaman "
was written by a Welshman?
Did you proud Welsh people in America know that the very first American novel
, " The Journal of Penrose, Seaman " was written by a Welshman? His name was
William Williams.
First published in 1815, this current publication is edited by excellent ,
patriotic Welsh author , Mr Terry Breverton,of St Athan, near Cardiff.
T D Breverton has also written first class, informative books such as "The
Book of Welsh Saints " ; The Book of Welsh Pirates and Buccaneers and books
on Welsh pirates, Sir Henry Morgan and Bartholomew "Black Bart "Roberts.
I think that author , Terry Breverton is worthy of greater support from Welsh
folk across the world, so that he can carry on his invaluable work of
documenting our history and place in the world. His latest book is about Owain
Glyndwr.
Please tell your friends about his web-site , www.glyndwrpublishing.co.uk .
Terry Breverton deserves the support of Welsh people and friends of Wales
everywhere.

Alabama Welsh
One of our projects for the summer months is for individuals or small groups of
AWA members to attend events & festivals in your community, town, city or county
& handout AWA leaflets. This is easily done as you will not have to set-up tents
or canopies with tables, chairs or ice-cooler in tow.Just simply walk through
the crowd at your chosen event & handout leaflets explaining who we are & that
if their names are not on our list perhaps some of their families or friends
names are & to please pass the leaflets on to them neighbors or co-workers.
Simplier yet, is to just walk around in the parking lot of an event & place the
leaflet under their vehicles wiperblade. You`ll be home in no time & AWA
information will be in afew more people`s hands. Its not hard to do.
Also, never miss an opportunity to plug AWA in little local periodicals &
newspapers, many have free sections just for this sort of thing.
Our next meeting is Saturday July 25th 5 PM at Paul`s Bar-b-que about 4 miles
north of Pell City, Al. at the intersection of US Hwy. 231 N. & Hyw. 144. So
please mark your calendars NOW. See all of you then.

Welsh societies in California
I was referred to you by Eryl Aynsley after I contacted her asking if she knew
of a Welsh Society close to me in San Luis Obispo county. She did not but
suggested I contact you as someone who might know and if not, could possibly put
a little announcement in your newsletter.
I was born in Birkenhead in Cheshire and lived from the age of six until nine in
Dyserth in Wales before moving back to Birkenhead and later, Southampton. I
came to New York in 1966 and moved to california in 1972. All my family is still
in the UK with a few of them living in North Wales and the rest in Hampshire and
Cornwall.
Are Welsh roots were Jones and Lewis and on my mother's side: her grandmother
did not even speak English, she told me.
I would appreciate hearing back from you.

The Colorado Welsh Society is pleased to present a program on the Colorado Welsh
Miners in Boulder and Weld Counties, Colorado. This program will be held on
July 11, 2009, at the College Hill Library, 3705 W. 112th Avenue, Westminster,
Colorado. The program is from 3:00 to 4:45 PM. Paul and Carol Lightsey will
present this program on
The advent of coal mining in Colorado began concurrently with the gold rush of
1858-59 that essentially started the European migration into Colorado. By 1870,
coal mining was flourishing and the primary economic product of Boulder and Weld
counties. By 1900, nearly 2000 Welsh had moved to Colorado; some directly from
Wales, but many emigrating first to the coal fields of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre
Pennsylvania first. This presentation will describe the early history of the
role of Welsh coal miners in Colorado and the Lewis Home - Miners Museum in
Lafayette, Colorado.
This program is free and open to the public. After the program please join

Hi all,

Here is a message from the MySpace blog of Niamh N Charra...

slan,
Ceoltoir2009

We are thrilled to announce that Niamh's "Deoraiocht an tSaighdiura" track from
her debut album, has been nominated in the 2009 JUST PLAIN FOLKS MUSIC AWARDS.
The nominees which were announced today were chosen from over 560,000 songs,
submitted from various sources including CD Baby, and the gruelling selection
process took a total of 14 months.

Niamh is nominated along with 19 others in the "Celtic Instrumental Song
Category" which the organizers define as both traditional and contemporary
original Celtic Music. The awards are organised by Just Plain Folks Music
Organization, the world's largest grassroots music organization, and are the
largest of any kind in the world. Due to the sheer volume of music considered,
the awards are only issued every 2 years, and will take place this year in
America's music capital, Nashville, in August.

For more information, please check out her website at

Both Riverdance and Michael Jackson fans may enjoy this.

Taken from a Killinaskully Halloween Special a couple of years ago

Killinaskully was an excellent Irish comedy series that ran in Ireland
for 6 years with many of the characters performed by Pat Shortt.
He plays at least 4 of the characters in this hilarious clip,
which to me is a bit of a tribute to much more than MJ RIP ...

Welsh Long bows
Does anybody know their origin?
1415: Cornish archers fight under a banner depicting 2 Cornish wrestlers at the
Battle of Agincourt. This was calibrated by Michael Drayton (1563-1631) in his
narrative poem 'The Battaile of Agincourt' ...
(per CornishWorld.net)
...The longbow was first recorded as being used by the Welsh in 633 C.E., when
Offrid, the son of Edwin, king of Northumbria, was killed by an arrow shot from
a Welsh longbow during a battle between the Welsh and the Mercians -- more than
five centuries before any record of its military use in England...
  (per TheMiddleAges.net)
...Henry (V of England) dealt a crippling blow to that nation (France) at the
battle of Agincourt ... England with her fierce Welsh bowman, seemed an
unstoppable force...

The choir performed at Narooma Golf Club, at Wolumla Hall for the Sapphire Coast
Music Society and in St Andrew's Church, Canberra with the Sing Australia Choir.
We also sang the Australian and Welsh national anthems on the marble staircase
inside Parliament House, and performed In Flanders Fields and the Australian
anthem at the Australian War Memorial. On April 25 we will sing again at the
Anzac Day service following the march at Sydney's Anzac Memorial.
The coming months have fewer concerts but engagements will increase sharply
later in the year.

Nice to see Nights In White Satin and Mull Of Kintyre
enter into the catalogue of Celtic Heritage.

Robin Williamson, not so long back appointed Chief of the
Order or Bards Ovates and Druids, like the current
Archbishop of Canterbury today, has recently been singing
Celticky versions of Ace Of Spades (Motorhead)
and a beautiful Wild Horses (Rolling Stones)

while our local pubs sessions now regularly include timeless
classics like Brown Eyed Girl and Fulsom Prison Blues.

On one side I'm expressing a hint of satire
but in my heart I love these interpretations
of pop and rock songs in the style these Celticky
singers and musicians are used to.

..... and its seems millions of others do too.

More!!

There are so many Irish pubs around here in need of some extra energy and great
music! :)

Sadly. No gigs in Dallas at that time. Not sure when the next show is in Dallas.

Hey guys,
I saw a great Celtic band last month at Sullivan Hall in Greenwich
Village, NYC. They're coming back to the same venue this Saturday,
June 20th. If you're in the area, check it out. Its such a fun show.

The name of the band is Scythian. They are rooted in celtic traditional
music, but they mix it up with Celtic rock, and strains of Gypsy and
klezmer. They're young, (cute!), and put on a high energy dance party!

Check them out here: Scythian

Welsh expats in Australia
I'm starting to put together plans for our coverage of the Ashes in Cardiff next
month and I am keen to hear from Welsh expats from around the world about what
they will be doing to watch it.
I'd also love to hear from anyone who may have emigrated from Wales to
Australia, or who may be from Australia with family in Wales.
Basically I am looking for anyone from around the world who has a good story to
tell that may be good for our newspaper and website.
Would you be able to put a message out to your members in your weekly email and
ask for them to get in touch with me?
Many thanks for your help,

Japanese Welsh
Thank you very much for sending me Wales Worldwide.
It is fantastic to know for me how people Welsh is actively expanding their
influences of Welsh Spirit and heart all over the world. It is not only the
case of Welsh people, even Japanese who used to live in Wales for spending their
time during their job in Wales and sometime with their family. So many children
graduated local school and used to learn Japanese language in their Saturday
School in WWhitchurch in South Wales.
These Japanese has very pro-Wales and loves Wales as their 2nd home country.
We Japan has the Clwb Hiraeth which is composed of people who used to work in
Wales and has really Welsh heart. Sir Howard is honoury member, Mr
Nakamura, EX vice president Sony, Mr Murayama, President Kansai Airport and Mr
Kaminaga, President Sumitomo Precision are the member of club.
It is just for your information, we have certain Welsh network (St. David's
Society, Welsh Language study and
The Clwb Hiraeth).

Quakers
My Welsh ancestor, Davis Smith, was born into a Welsh Quaker congregation which
immigrated to the Altoona, PA area in 1812. I understand that the records of
that immigration are in the Sharples Library at Swarthmore College. I lived in
Swarthmore in the 1960s, but had not yet become interested in Welsh history so I
never looked up that information at the library. Family lore says that he
worked on the railroad that carried canal boats across the mountains. That was
the Allegheny Portage railroad, which opened in 1834 and is now a National
Historical Site Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site (U.S. National
Park Service) I no longer live in Swarthmore and have no easy access to the
Sharples Library. Has anybody looked into that resource, and can tell me more
about that migration?
Just incidentally, Quakers, many of whom were Welsh, were a major factor in the
settlement of the Philadelphia area. This is evidenced by the fact that so many
of the Philadelphia suburbs have Welsh names (Bryn Mawr, Bala Cynwyd, Llanerch,
etc). Pennsylvania was chartered in 1681, and the first proposed name was New
Wales. This is really surprising, because Penn was English and had estates in
Ireland,
Eventually Penn attracted other persecuted minorities including Huguenots,
Mennonites, Amish, Catholics, Lutherans, and Jews from England, France, Holland,
Germany, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, and Wales. Essentially all the 17th century
settlers of America were religious refugees. That was especially true of the
Welsh, because Wales was a hotbed of Quakerism, which was persecuted by the
British Crown.

Boston
Celtic Week at WHRB 95.3 fm, streaming on the web at whrb.org
I have a week long program of Celtic music where the only
requirement is that the lyrics are in a Celtic language. Spread the
word! If bands want to donate material, please have them email me
their mp3s.
I already have quite a large selection of Welsh artists singing in
Welsh.
The program will be on WHRB Cambridge, 95.3 fm (Boston, MA), and
streaming over the web at WHRB.org.
In addition, over the summer I'll have a Celtic music program on WMBR
Cambridge, 88.9 fm (wmbr.org) every Saturday at 6 pm. That will also
be available on their website.
Musical suggestions of artists to check out are always welcome. I'm
especially looking for jazz and classical music with lyrics in a
Celtic language, though all genres are welcome.
Thanks for your help !!! Diolch yn fawr !!!

TALKING ABOUT WALES.
by John F. Wake
  'WHERE IN WALES'
"Giving stress a kick"
Do you like pubs? I suppose most of us do even though some may only sip a
lemonade.
With all the stresses and concerns of modern day life thank Goodness Wales still
possesses
little havens of tranquility. There are still pubs in Wales where no cars whizz
by, no
traffic noise and one can escape for an hour in another world. Most public
houses in the U.K,
especially in villages, have a church adjacent or very nearbye. I visited one
such pub in
Wales where all the ingredients of 'escapism' were present. Rural views, an
ancient church adjacent, no traffic racing back and fore, a rustic interior, a
good pint, lovely food and friendly people. Enjoy the pub and church in this
short two minute video and see why an hour there can slow you down and put life
into perspective.(And the beer aint that bad either!!) Just for an hour the
world didn't seem to be such an hectic place...............

Colorado Welsh Society
This presentation will describe the early history of the
role of Welsh coal miners in Colorado and the “Lewis Home - Miner’s
Museum” in Lafayette, Colorado.
This program is free and open to the public. After the program please join
members of the Colorado Welsh Society at the Exchange Tavern, 11940 Bradburn

Dylan Thomas in Sydney
Lovers of Dylan Thomas in Sydney will enjoy a special day on Sunday 14 June
when they board a modern charabanc for the daytrip to Swansea (NSW) and back,
reliving the famous story of The Outing. We won't try to re-create the story in
its entirety - no-one will get drunk or break glasses and we will reach our
destination at the seaside. We regret that primus stoves will not be allowed on
our charabanc, but we will have wonderful DVDs of Dylan to show along the way
and perfect locations for dining, sipping a convivial drink and basking in
Dylan's descriptions of seashores and seabirds. There will be readings in caves
and on rock platforms and beaches reminiscent of Worm's Head and Rhossili. You
won't need a bow tie, but please don't leave your false teeth at home like Mr
