HI Everyone!

It's March 1st and I'm so happy to announce that the Featured Writer of the
Month is now up on the website! If you loved Frank McCourt's 'Angela's
Ashes' and books by Roddy Doyle, you'll definitely love Brendan O'Carroll's
look at the comic misadventures of his protagonist, Agnes Browne, which
begins with the scrappy and funny 'The Mammy', set in Dublin, Ireland.

Don't forget to check on the previous Featured Writers like Frank McCourt,
Morgan Llywellyn and Maeve Binchy. You can also order their books directly
from the Celtic Cafe pages. I will be adding the Amazon UK links to all the
corresponding books featured in the bookstore and hope that you all enjoy
your stay at the Celtic Cafe.

If you have a writer in mind for future features, do drop me a line!

Take care,
Velvet

Hello, I have just come on to your list. If there is anything I can advise about
Dance Injury and its avoidance, please let me know. I make the famous Hullachan
Pro Irish shoes. We sell everything we make as we choose to remain a small hand
make shoe company, but I still want to make my knowledge available to dancers
that need a little advice about problems. Otherwise access my site and join our
dance injury forum. Its free. There is a huge number of articles on anatomy on
my site that may also be useful to dancers and teachers alike.

For my North American friends, I am lecturing at the Gaelic 2000 Summer School
in Boston on anatomy and the physiology of the dancer and having open
discussions throughout the week. In addition I am giving advice as well as
fitting at the North American Irish Dance Championships in San Francisco . Happy
dancing everyone
Sincerely, Craig Coussins

Hullachan is a 'Millennium Product Company'. We are proud to announce that the
Hullachan has been chosen for display at the 'DOME' Visit our new site on

Hey everyone,

as a real "Conan-maniac" I had already supposed something Irish to come up on
Paddy's Day, and now that it seems to be an Irish Dance troupe...well, GREAT!!
;o))

My only problem is that I am actually living in Germany, and as far as I know
the Conan shows on the air here are not similar to those in the States (due to
the time difference, I think). This goes so far that I was once watching Conan
somewhen in early January this year and they were doing "In The Year 2000"...
kinda weird, but what the hack...*g*

So now I would be thankful if anyone of you could tell me how to get informed
about what will be on here, and of course I need to know about the Paddy's Day
show...!

thanks in advance,
cheers

Thai-nie, I believe it's 5 hours difference. As we have over 340 subscribers to

Dare I mention that buying it from Amazon.com via the link at Rambles helps
to defray the cost of running the magazine....

(I hate to bring such things up, 'cause it makes me sound like a mercenary,
but that's the only way I can recoup some of the expenses.)

**EDIT NOTE from Bernadette: Tom, this brings up a good point that I want to
mention. I did not set up the Celtic Cafe with the idea that it would ever be a
"commercial site" and I don't mind paying for the costs of the registration and
the fees of the website being online.

However, Velvet does a tremendous amount of work as Webmistress Extraordinaire,
and I told her that any income from the affiliate programs she has set up on
www.celticcafe.com is hers to provide at least SOME remuneration for her
efforts. As you are no doubt aware, the few pennies that come in when someone
orders through an affiliate program don't really add up to much.

So, we DO encourage the visitors to the Celtic Cafe and Rambles E-zine websites
to consider, if they are going to order online anyway, to do it through our
affiliate programs. For instance, if I went to www.amazon.com to order a CD, it
wouldn't help us at all. However, by clicking on the link from either of our
sites, you or Velvet get "credited" with a TEENSY-TINY "commission", and it
costs the purchaser the same, whether going through a link on our site or at the
Amazon website directly.

PLEASE do help support the Celtic Cafe and/or Tom's wonderful Rambles site by
doing this, won't you? It would be GREATLY appreciated by us all. Thanks!

For a change I actually got to see one of these morning program
appearances!!! It was good to see Colin, Jean & the other dancers, but GMA
sure made us wait! I was thinking that I had the wrong day or something...
the show hosts never even mentioned DODG for the first 3/4 of the show.
I know DODG has changed somewhat since I saw it in London (early Dec.), but
I must tell you all, it's WAY more spectaular that that short bit could hint
at.
Aside from wishing there was more, my only complaint is about those pants
Jean was wearing...... reminded me of the old (classic) Star Trek uniform
pants. *LOL*

I don't have any specific news regarding this rumor, but it's probably a good
idea to have some blank tapes on hand, Conan has had dancers from RIverdance
on the show before, so I guess there's a chance. Also keep an eye on the
Letterman show, he's had Riverdancers on too, and the Chieftains a couple of
times as well.
I have, however, found note (on their website I think) that AFRO CELT SOUND
SYSTEM will be on Conan's show on March 15th. Check it out.

Hi, all!

We have another, wonderful NEW Celtic Cafe Onelist to tell you about!

Our friend "Celt" has had a mailing list of folks to whom she would send weekly
dance steps that they could practice along with a particular dance off the Lord
of the Dance, Riverdance, Feet of Flames, etc., videos. That list is now
CelticCafeDANCERS and I'm very pleased to say that our own Sally of Sydney, who
TEACHES Irish dance and is the Moderator of the CelticCafeAUSTRALIA Onelist is
Celt's co-moderator.

Some of the subscribers are already sharing information about how to do some
traditional Irish steps, such as the one following, thanks to Nathalie in
Belgium. If you are an aspiring dancer, and want to get help like this so that
you can learn some steps at home, join the CelticCafeDANCERS list and learn
along! :-)

Happy stepping! :-)

Twist ankle movement (don't know how you call that):
R Front Toe touches floor (to your left) then R heel goes down and at the
same time you twist your Toe to your right, then step left behind. You're
supposed to hear three beats. It's the movement Bernadette's does in
Break-out when she chases Gillian away, she does it turning around herself.
If anyone can tell me how it's called!
So, let's go back to the set:

After the Hop on L, twist ankle three times
Hop on L again and do one more twist ankle
Tramp R in front, L backtoe, L frontheel (there are three beats no hop
inbetween)
Hop onto L, Jump R over to front
L step B
R step F

L Treble hopback
R Treble hoponto
L step B
R Treble hopback

Hi, all!
I have one single ticket available for DODG's opening night performance, at
Radio City Music Hall in NYC, for next Wednesday March 8. It's $75. I ended
up with an extra. It's in the Orchestra section (meaning it's NOT up in a
balcony) about twenty five rows back. If anybody would like to buy it from
me, let me know! I'll be at the show so I could leave it at Will Call for
you.
Thanks

Thanks, Lutz! :-)

Thank you, Karen, for the information about this great book
being made into a TV mini-series! "The Mists of Avalon" is my
favorite book, along with Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", both
of which I've read about 5 times. I think Angelica Huston
will make a great Vivianne (except she's a bit tall, isn't
she?), and Julianna Margulies will make a good Morgaine (I can
think of other actresses whose looks, but maybe not
personalities, better suit my own picture of Morgaine) if they
stay true to the characters as written by Marion Zimmer
Bradley. They both have the long, dark hair that the faerie
women had. Wonder who's going to be cast as Arthur, Merlin,
Lancelot and Guinevere?

I have to agree with Melyssa about conflicting feelings about
this wonderful book being made into a movie/mini-series. I
remember what happened to that other wonderful book, "Clan of
the Cave Bear", when it was corrupted into a movie! And "Lord
of the Rings", though animated, didn't fare too well, either.
Let's just hope that the director and producers of "The Mists
of Avalon" stay true to the book.

Does anyone know if there is a web site for this production?
Where can we get more information on the production? Maybe we
can start a campaign, pleading with them to be true to the
book!

Peace & slán beo,
Diane

From Craig Coussins
DANCING ON DANGEROUS GROUND.

I went to see this show a week after it opened. Before I start I should give you
my credentials for writing about any stage show. I see over thirty different
shows, ballets and operas each year and have done so for nearly 40 years. I used
to be a dancer and then an actor and now I make shoes for dancers. I have no axe
to grind and tell it how I see it. I did read some unqualified critics try and
compare it to existing shows but that is extremely unfair and their crits were a
bit suspicious as they were more intent on making inane remarks about peoples
body shapes rather than the shows first class production. Maybe there was an
ulterior motive for these. Who knows! I wish to redress the balance. Ok thats
the qualification bit finished.

The Story:

Dancing on Dangerous Ground is based on the legend of Finn McCool with this part
of the story, The Hunt for Diarmuid and Grania being the element of the
production.

The Fianna were the fearless standing army set up by the High King of Ireland,
Cormac MacAirt. His master at arms, Finn McCool was the leader of this army and
each soldier swore an oath of allegiance to Finn. Their exploits were stuff of
legend and the story of Dangerous Ground is based on the heroic exploits of Finn
McCool. But Finn has grown old now and while still a great man, has lost his
youthful zest for life. Diarmuid is Irelands finest warrior and leader of the
Fianna. A trusted friend of Finns and a hero to the army.

In the legend, Grania is Cormac's daughter, renowned for her beauty as well as
wilful nature. Finn desires her hand in marriage as his own wife, Manissa, has
died. This was to be Finns third marriage. Grania is well aware of the benefits
to the houses of McCool and MacAirt and her duty to form a bond between the two
families. She agrees to the marriage but does not realise that the handsome hero
she knew when she was a child was now a shadow of his former self.
During the wedding banquet there are elements of sorcery that result in Granias'
lust for Diarmuid. He reluctantly agrees to run off with her.

Finn and the Fianna in an epic saga of music and murderous mayhem pursue the
couple. During this Diarmuid's initial reluctance changes to a feeling of love
for Grania.

There many variations of the ending of this Saga but Dancing on Dangerous Ground
pulls no punches.

As the treachery reaches its inevitable conclusion the lovers are seen to return
to the mists of time and, perhaps, eventually find contentment.

Dancing on Dangerous Ground is not Riverdance. Its certainly not Lord of the
Dance. It has all the passion of both but it is absolutely, completely and
irrevocably different. I mean big time. Yes its an Irish Dance show. That is
true, but it is also a show with a structure. A story and a plot.

If you want a show with a sugary ending and a big hug for everyone then forget
it. This show cuts none of that. Its a mixture of Carousel, Romeo and Juliet and
Titanic. If you think that every story should have a happy conclusion then think
about some of the worlds great tragedies. Hamlet, Carmen, Othello, MacBeth,
Rigoletto, Phantom and the aforementioned Romeo and Juliet. All of these works
are eternally popular because of their tragic endings and Dancing on Dangerous
Ground is the new kid on the block. With a particular Irish twist.

The story is woven around one of the ancient myths of Eire. A beautiful young
woman marries an older man who is a great hero. She then falls in love with
someone else, younger and more virile, and ensnares by magic the young man of
her dreams. He is the captain of the guard and a younger sexier hero. They elope
and he meets his end at the hands of her husband and she is banished. The two
spirits find each other and are forever entwined in the hereafter. Thats the
plot. The way this story is told is like nothing else you have ever seen. It is
beautiful. It is amazing. It will tear at your own heart. It is, in other words,
a great show.

The dancing is stunning in the true sense of the word. It is astonishing. Colin
Dunne is without doubt one of the finest dancers of his generation. He was of
course world champion nine times in a row. He was awarded the title of the
Greatest Irish Dancer in the World by the principle newspaper in Ireland, The
Irish Post. Playing the brooding young hero unsure and mixed about his feelings
for the heroine, with his, almost, animal magnetism exemplifies the character he
plays. No posturing with this leading man, no 'look at me' kind of playing, no,
he is just extremely masculine and very Irish. He uses the stage to its absolute
maximum as his own personal space. Is the character is lured into the elopement
by the tricks of a woman, or would he have gone willingly? Only you must answer
that riddle.

Jean Butler is one of the most consummate dancers on stage today. Gone was the
almost expressionless dancing of Riverdance. No, here was an exciting vibrant
dancer of such quality that few if any could equal her for, technique of dance,
stage presence and ability. Her acting is second only to her dancing. She is
painfully beautiful. Travels in mid air like a feather. Her facial expressions
of joy, lust and eventually when she felt that terrible pain, twisted into
something that tore at my heart. It made me weep. This woman can act the socks
of any leading film actor. Her character is one of mystery. Is she a witch, is
she an enticer of young men, is she an unfaithful wife or is she a young woman
who finds the love of her young life and does not wish to let it go. Again only
you as the viewer will be able to make that decision.

The cast is also superb. Their timing is synchronised to the millisecond. Truly
excellent quality dancers have been use here and some of the set dance scenes
were extraordinary. Certainly three or four dancers really stood out but all
were clearly working very hard to build the intensity of the action throughout.
On one small point I would have to say that Jean should give some of them a
little help in facial expressions as they seemed to be concentrating a little
too hard rather than acting the story but, after all, it was the first week.

The music is astounding. Its so full of passion and is clearly, intricately,
woven into the story. Because of its beauty it will no doubt become a classic.
Seamus Eagan and Solus are the new wave of Irish Music, a music that reaches far
above a cultural sound.
The costumes by Frank Gardiner are purposely mixed from period to modern to
reflect the ancient world of the old king and the new vibrant world of the young
lovers. It was a good idea and the qualities of the period costumes are superb.
The man that designed The Last Emperor, Dangerous Liaisons, Evita and Rob Roy
has captured the essence of the great Saga perfectly.
The set is a steel structure that allows free movement on different floors,
stairs and heights. The sound of the metal excites the senses as the dancers use
it to the full. The designer, Tim Hatley is a set designer for all the major
Opera Companies, The Royal Shakespeare Company and the recipient of many awards.

I must comment on the lighting. I have seen over a thousand major shows and a
master lighting technician creates the lighting in this one, or I should say a
lighting artist. It carries the passionate feeling of the show in every single
scene. Pat Collins has been lighting designer for New York City Ballet, Martha
Graham, American Ballet Theatre, the Met, NYC Opera, and the prestigious Royal
Opera House. She has understood the story and imparts it in light and shade with
panache.

Its funny how I started to see this unique show in so many different lights. On
one level it was the most exciting tap dance show on stage today, on another it
was a beautiful Irish story performed as a ballet. On yet another a tragedy that
took you from the beginning to its inevitable conclusion. You will cry. You will
be uplifted and you will enjoy this amazing performance from some of the worlds
leading dancers.

I know that if you love a good story you will go back repeatedly to enjoy
Dancing on Dangerous Ground. I certainly will.

Dancing on Dangerous Ground will go on an 18-month world tour. Get a ticket when
you can. You will not regret it.

Water From The Well - The Chieftains (BMG Classics)

After a decade of basking in the reflected glow of musical guests, The
Chieftains take back the spotlight on this entrancing collection of
traditional
Irish tunes. Water From The Well is the first "solo" project from the
venerable
group in more than five years, and it's a welcome feast.

Paddy Moloney, the piping leprechaun who has led the band for more than 30
years, couldn't resist inviting along a few friends, including Ashley MacIsaac
and Altan. But it's the rich tunes and their loving treatment by The
Chieftains
that are the real stars of this generous recording - 17 tunes in more than an
hour of music.

The magic of these grey-haired Gaels is how they unfailingly invigorate the
ancient music with vitality, whether performing an elegant 17th-century Irish
harp piece or a driving set of reels in flautist Matt Molloy's pub in
Westport,
County Mayo. Though they've recorded with every breathing musician over the
years - from The Rolling Stones to Chet Atkins - the group members have but to
dip into their own bottomless well to restate their title as true
Chieftains of
Irish music.

Hi Alex and all interested in Tourdates about FoF in London,

I wondered, if I should post this message in CelticCafe or CelticCafeFLATLEY.
But I think someone, who don't **love** (like mine :-)) Michael Flatley, and
wanna go to FoF wanna get this message. Here we go:

Today I went to the travel agency in Passau (asking for flight and hotel in
London, because I wanna see FoF in London), and I know the guy working there
very well, and told him that I wanna see Michael and FoF there and he told me,
that he has read about upcoming tourdates for London (Dublin, he was not sure)
and other dates, that everyone could book soon. So he told me, that he will look
for this information, and if it is true and then phone to me immediatelly.

So when I get the information I let you all know ...

Best wishes from Germany
Simone

P.S. Greetings to Bernadette. I was very happy about the vote!!! I love this
list, like it was and like it is. And it is so great here, because everyone, I
got aquainted because of this list, is so kind and great. Go ahead!!! **g**

And the best tourdates-site I have ever seen!!! Thank you, Alex!!!

Hi Bernadette,

I'd like to point your attention at my website, that has been updated
recently, and contains all kind of information about Clannad and it's
members, like pictures, links, press-releases and so on. I think it's
very interesting for those who love Celtic music. On the other hand i
don't know if you allow people to use this list to promote their site.

Kerstin Kuhne just called from Erfurt, Germany to let us know that
the Feet of Flames show is completely different from what we know
from the Hyde Park "spectacular." There is EGYPTIAN influence, can
you imagine? :-:

Michael Flatley looks GREAT!!! The sad news is that Daire Nolan,
Gillian Norris and Bernadette Flynn are NOT the leads in FoF with
Michael. They are apparently with Troupe 1 in South Africa.

Completely new costumes too! She called from the break and will try
to call back again at the end of the show to let us know more.

WOOHOOOOO!!!!!

Hi, all!

Kerstin called me again after the show and gave me more of a report.
I'm SO fascinated by all the changes!

For one thing, apparently Michael doesn't have his belt taken away,
and there is something about someone in danger of being beheaded.
YIKES! Beheaded?! And Egyptian influences? What are we in store for?
Wow! What a show!

Kerstin says that the opening is just fantastic, SO amazing. And the
full band is there, and the music is more "rock," more "modern,"
according to her.

No "Cry of the Celts" and no "LOTD" -- the dance numbers. The new
show is not much like the FoF we know from the video at all.

One of the costumes is "glow-in-the-dark." She's not sure what to
make of that! LOL Sounds interesting, to say the least!

Steve Brunning is Don Dorcha, Sarah Clarke is Saoirse, and she is not
sure who Morrigan is. I'll be talking with her and some others in a
few hours when they get back to the hotel, after they all have a
great time drinking Guinness and comparing notes with the other Cafe
friends.

Yes, Ronan and Marie Duffy are there too. Ronan, she says your new
music is SO great! Can't wait to hear it for myself! :-)
