Dear Friends of Golosa, the University of Chicago Russian Choir,

We are happy to announce that Golosa will once again be performing at the
annual University of Chicago Folk Festival.

We will perform from 3:30 to 4:30 on the afternoon of Sunday, February
3rd, in the 3rd Floor Theater in Ida Noyes Hall.

If you come in the morning to hear the other performers, I hope you
will stick around for us as well. We were able to travel to Siberia in
Septmeber and spent two weeks there with our folk-singing friends,
learning our craft and making closer contact with the people who have been
singing this music since they were children. The time we spent in Russia
has been of great benefit to us and we're singing better than ever, so
don't miss your chance to hear us! If you've never heard us before or if
you haven't heard us in a few months, this is a great opportunity.

If you would like to know more information about the Folk Festival, please
visit their website at:

http://www.uofcfolk.org

best wishes,

Noel Taylor, director, Golosa

Hi all, just want to mention that I'll no longer be sending out A Cappella
Always program updates on this region-specific mailing list, but you can
keep up with the world's only 24/7 a cappella radio station by subscribing

Dear friends of Golosa,

I didn't say anything about the cost of coming to see us perform at the
Folk Fest on Sunday, Feb. 3. That's because it's free!

I should add, however, that although there is no charge to see us or to
attend any of the workshops taking place on Saturday and Sunday in Ida
Noyes Hall, admission is charged for the big evening concerts in Mandel
Hall. Information on prices is available at the Folk Fest website:

Looking for a special surprise for your sweetie this Valentine's Day?

Surprise her--or him--with a SINGING VALENTINE!

I know, you've probably already thought of that . . . but if, for
some reason, you've decided not to have your own group serenade that
special someone, a barbershop quartet might be just the ticket.

Find out more at www.singingvalentines.com -- a clearing-house for
men's and women's barbershop groups that are presenting Singing
Valentines this year. The site is a free service operated by the
Barbershop Harmony Society, SPEBSQSA. Details (such as pricing,
etc.) are provided for each participating group. View & select 'em

Subject: Chicago a cappella Jazz Concerts in Early March
munn1938
Send Email Send Email

Chicago a cappella (the vocal group; unrelated to this news group
except by interest) turns its talents to the art of vocal jazz and a
cappella pop in three early March jazz performances titled "Stormy
Weather." Dates and venues are listed below. The nine singers of the
acclaimed group will bring their intimate blend and feel for
sophisticated harmony to standards such as Cole Porter's "Night
and Day," George Gershwin's "Summertime," and Hoagy Carmichael's
"The Nearness of You," as well as pop classics by Stevie Wonder and
Brian Wilson. The finest a cappella arrangers in vocal jazz are
represented, including Ward Swingle, Jennifer Shelton Barnes, and The
Real Group's Anders Edenroth. "Stormy Weather" will be an evening
of pure enjoyment.

In "Stormy Weather," Chicago a cappella will showcase some of the
greatest standards of American song, all sung in beautiful and fresh
a cappella arrangements. The nine singers will wrap their voices
around the sinuous melody of Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets In Your
Eyes," the jaunty rhythm of Irving Berlin's "Steppin' Out
with My Baby," and the familar strains of Rodgers and Hart's "Blue
Moon."

Jazz fans will get their due, as the group sings Duke Ellington's
classic "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," and Bill Evans's
"Waltz for Debby." The arrangements for the concert include charts by
Ward Swingle, whose Swingle Singers re-defined jazz singing.

While Chicago a cappella has defined itself as a primarily classical
ensemble, the singers have always displayed remarkable versatility.
The group's arrangements of songs by Paul Simon, Lyle Lovett and
k.d. lang have always been show-stoppers. Founder and artistic
director Jonathan Miller states, "From the start, I always intended
the group to sound convincing, no matter the style: Renaissance
music, spirituals, Gregorian chant, and even vocal jazz. I have
enjoyed the chance to dig deeply into the jazz and pop repertoire for
this concert, and the singers sound terrific." Among the members of
the group with extensive backgrounds in jazz and pop are soprano
Kathleen Dietz, who has toured as backing vocalist for Kenny Rogers
and sung with the adult-contemporary band Soleil Moon. Tenor Harold
Brock and mezzo-soprano Amy Pickering perform regularly with the
80's cover band "high in the lower 80's." Baritone Matthew
Greenberg has appeared with the pop quintet Table for Five, and mezzo-
soprano Susan Lerner sang the world premiere of an original piece by
award-winning Chicago jazz-blues composer Peter Saltzman. In addition
to Jonathan Miller, who sings low bass, "Stormy Weather" will also
feature mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Grizzell, tenor Erik Carlson, and
baritone Aaron Johnson.

The "Stormy Weather" Concerts may be heard at any of three Chicago
area venues and three dates:

** Saturday, March 2, 8:00 p.m., at Unity Temple, 875 Lake Street in
Oak Park
** Saturday, March 9, 8:00 p.m., at The Newberry Library, 60 W.
Walton St. in Chicago
** Sunday, March 10, 7:30 p.m., at Northwestern University's
Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place in Evanston.

Hi there netters,

Wow, what a night at WVRM with T.J.Barranger, Rich Pearson and myself on the air with The "APPLAUSE" Show airing for 4 1/2 hours..... 4 new listeners, 17 emails, and even Tom Carrol calling in from Georgia....you can't get any better than that.

As most of you already know the barbershop world lost a great man this week with the passing of Hal Purdy, member of the Livingston Dapper Dans of Harmony for many years, host of Purdy's Corral and consumate giver to the world of barbershop harmony.

The APPLAUSE TEAM is planning a tribute night to Hal either on 3/7 or 3/14 and we need your help.  We expect to invite his daughter Mary Jo to be with us.... we hope to have the tape of an interview (albeit short) that I did at Bolton Landing in 2000, and other special things for you that night.

We need quartets and choruses (representatives) to email us with their stories about Hal and their relationship with him or experiences at Purdy's Corral, or personal stories about their times with Hal.  If  your quartet has a special recorded song that you would like us to play during the tribute show, send the title along with your email.  If we have your CD in our library, we will certainly play the song.

No matter what the occasions, your "Hal" story will be welcomed.  We are sure that the tribute will be a very VERY special part of the evening's activities.

Hi there lovers of acappella music!

We had a wonderful night last Thursday bringing you great a cappella music from the studios of WVRM in Upper Montclair, NJ.  We featured some single cuts from about 7 Southwestern District Area Quartets and choruses as a teaser <g> for the upcoming "All Southwestern District Area" show featuring SAI, SPEBSQSA and Contemporary groups from that area of our country. Grady Kerr, our good friend in Texas is helping The "APPLAUSE" Team to plan that special evening.

By the Way, If your District  would like to see a special show dedicated to YOUR area recording artists, please email us at applause@...  and we will help get the project organized.

A reminder to those who knew and loved Hal Purdy of SPEBSQSA fame.... we will be doing a "Tribute" to Hal, his years with the Dapper Dans of Harmony in Livingston/Montclair NJ, and the wonderful happenings at the annual "Purdy's Corral" at the Int'l SPEBSQSA convention.  We are looking for your "Hal Purdy/Purdy's Corral" stories, and your requests for songs you would like to dedicate to the memory of this great man.  If your group has a CD and you want a specific song played....email me today at  RMTMUSIC@...  and I will let you know if we have the CD in our library.  If not, you can send it ASAP and we will include it in the tribute.

T.J. Barranger, Rich Pearson and I continue to enjoy presenting the best of barbershop and a cappella music to you each Thursday.  Thanks for all your emails and comments.  We are very close to getting our new computer that will bring you clearer streaming signals, as well as the unlimited band-width of WARP Radio.

Hi there gang,

What a great evening of a cappella music last Thursday as we featured more than 50 groups performing 76 songs during the show.  Rich Pearson, T.J. Barranger and I were thrilled that many of you emailed us and gave us your comments.  We were also embarrassed that the streaming signal appeared to be having problems and some of our listeners were bumped during the broadcast.  The GOOD NEWS is that the computer for implementing WARP RADIO has arrived and we will be getting the WARP stream up and running within 10-14 days.

If you are a group that has a redording, we would love to feature your music on The "APPLAUSE" Show.  All you need to do is email us at  applause@... and we will email you instructions on submitting your CD for airplay.

If you sent your music to our old station prior to December of 2001, we want to remind you that all the music that was sent to the former station was retained by them when we moved the show.  If you are in doubt about whether we have your music, please email us and inquire.  We have been using our personal collections for the first month and a half...and we would like to begin building the WVRM Library.  Thanks for your support.

The week after Easter , on the 4th of April, we will be having the "Hal Purdy Tribute"  Lots of great music, some guests, and some surprises.  Tomorrow evening's show will feature some sacred music of the Easter Season.  In late April, we will be having an "All-Southwestern US Area SAhow"  featuring the music of groups in the Southwest District and  Region, from barbershop to a cappella.  It should be a great evening...don't miss it!

Hi there gang,

We had the most wonderful time last night broadcasting some of the greatest sacred music as we approach the Easter Holiday and, for our Jewish listeners, continue the celebration of Passover.  T.J. Barranger and I were so impressed this week as we located and scheduled more than 50 songs from barbershop, contemporary and Vocal Jazz artists appropriate for the season.  In addition we played 23 other songs to round out the evening. Our cohort, Rich Pearson, was preparing to travel this weekend to see his family in upstate NY, so TJ and I held down the fort.
We welcomed four new listeners (by emails), received 6 requests from regular listeners, and answered three questions about artists during the night.  Please keep those emails coming in...we love to hear from you.

We hope you all have a safe holiday weekend, and that, if possible, you spend it with friends and family renewing those bonds that are so special to our lives.  Remember the motto of The "APPLAUSE" Show...."Music Is the Universal Language....Speak It To As MAny People As You Can Every Day Of Your Life".

Notes on future shows:
Next week, April 4th  will feature a segment on Hal Purdy, that wonderful barbershop icon that we lost just recently.  Stories, songs, special guests and special calls will bring to life the memory of this incredibly loved man.  If your group has a "Hal " story, please email me privately this week at RMTMUSIC@... and we will include it in the segment.
Sometime in MAY, we will be having an "All Southwest" region show featuring the music from groups located in the Southwestern region of our country.. from the library of SPEB's recordings, SAI recordings, Contemporary A Cappella groups,a nd Harmony Inc.  groups.  We hope that , if your group has a CD and you are located in the Southwestern part of our country, you will email us to receive the "Guidelines For Submitting Music" to The "APPLAUSE" Show here on WVRM Radio.

Hi there gang....

We had a wonderful night musically welcoming the season of Springtime.  We located 73 songs that included 4 requests, 2 dedications and 4 tunes from
new" cd's sent to the show.

Some notes about future shows.  In May we will be doing the "ALL SOUTHWEST REGION" Show which has been orchestrated through the great work of Grady Kerr, President of P.R.O.B.E. and the Southwest District of SPEBSQSA.
Sometime in the future we will air the "Hal Purdy Tribute".  This show has proven to be the most challenging when trying to assemble all of the key people in the studio and as telephone guests.  We hope that this show will be before the end of April.

If your chapter has a show coming up, you can email the facts about the show to the APPLAUSE Team at :  applause@...   We will be happy to announce it during the "Concert Central" portions of the nightly show.

Hello:

Greg Vaden from the a cappella group elmoTHUMM here.  I wanted to get the word out that there will be an a cappella Fest held October 13th at the Northshore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie.  If the venue sounds familiar that's because it's the site of the last several Harmony Sweepstakes events.

elmoTHUMM will definitely be participated as will two other award winning groups to be announced.  You can stay on top of all the details as they develop at www.elmothumm.com or e-mail me for updates at singers@....

See you in October:

Hi there lovers of A cappella Music,

Some of you are receiving this for the first time as a result your involvement with the International Barbershop Harmony Society.  We appreciate all of the hard work you do for the International, District and Division level committes and chapters within the Society.

As much as we try and promote the show, many, MANY of you still do not know about The "APPLAUSE" Show, a weekly radio show that brings our local (Montclair, NJ) and our Internet audiences 4 1/2 hours a cappella music every Thursday night from 6:30-11:00pm Eastern Time.
