Dear Friends of the Golosa Russian Choir,

It's been a while since I've mailed to this list, but we do have exciting
news!

Golosa will perform a 45-minute set at the opening ceremonies of Chicago's
Millennium Park at 3:30 pm on Saturday, July 17th, 2004. We'll be outdoors
on site #5. There is no charge for admission.

Please visit our website at:

http://www.golosa.org

and click on "upcoming events" for a map of the Millennium Park site which
includes the exact location of our performance area.

You can also visit the official Millennium park website at:

http://millenniumpark.org/

Click on "Millennium Park's Grand Opening Weekend Events" and from there
on "Opening Weekend Events" for a list of all the performers who will be
there to entertain you all weekend long.

I have reproduced below some directions on how to get to Millennium Park
by public transportation, taken from their official website.

I hope that you will come out in support of your favorite Russian choir
for this fantastic event. We'll see you there!

Noel Taylor, director

Hi Gang,

The following comes from Marty Israel, host of the Tuesday Night Swipes Show.

Hi everyone!

On Tuesday, July 6, the Tuesday night entry of The Harmony Network, Tuesday Night Swipes, will be back on the air.  Since most of you do not live within a two mile radius of Upper Montclair, New Jersey, the easiest way to hear the show is to go to www.harmonize.com/thn and follow the directions.

This week’s feature cut is something quite special.  It will feature the legendary Walter Latzko’s ten personal favorite Walter Latzko arrangements, as performed by the artists he himself specified.  Actually, it will be the top twelve, because he didn’t want to leave out any particular performers, but he did indeed choose each arrangement that you’re going to hear.

To give you an idea of the caliber of what we consider the feature cut, next week’s show (July 13) will feature the greatest and most ambitious barbershop arrangement ever written and performed!  Of course, to find out what that is, you’ll just have to tune in.

This week, though, we will also be premiering the new Michigan Jake CD, along with the goofy cut of the night and the mystery cut of the night, which, if you are the first to contact us via the chat room, e-mail, or the telephone and exactly identify the performers, you win a CD!

So, tune in.  You’ll be glad you did.

Canto ergo sum

There will also be a new mystery cut.  Last night, nobody correctly identified the Rapscallions singing Please Mr. Columbus, so nobody won a CD.  Perhaps there will be a winner next week.

All this will be on next week’s Tuesday Night Swipes, part of The Harmony Network.

Hi there netters,

Rich Taylor here, host of the "APPLAUSE" Show and President of THN...The Harmony Network.  You are receiving this as a member of a discussion group that loves barbershop and acappella music. Many of you know me from the International Barbershop Harmony Webcast where I have been "begging" for money for the last 5 years to insure that those broadcasts continue.  People all over the world have contributed to that cause and the webcasts appear to be headed for bigger and better things.  I am personally thankful for all who have partivcipated in that funding effort.

For the last 15 years, my good friend Bruce Checca, has been the driving force behind the Bolton Landing Barbershop Festival, the annual Labor Day event held in the beautiful upstate village of Bolton Landing, NY.  More than 30,000 people have enjoyed performances by world class barbershop quartets, choruses and acappella groups from around the world.  Each year, up to 10 champion groups appear, and this year, the 2004 International Quartet Champs, GOTCHA, will be performing.

Since the events of 9/11, the attendance at the 2002 and 2003 festival has been significantly lower than expected and, for the first time since it's inception, the Festival sustained losses in those two years.  At the present time, the Festival is in a deficit situation, creating the inability to pay the "up front" costs of airline tickets and deposits for this years festival.

I am forwarding a copy of a note Bruce sent to many of those who have attended the festival in the past 15 years.  He needs our help NOW in order for the 2004 Festival to take place.  Please read his note...understand the emotion from which it comes, and if you can help, please let him know now.  The decision has to be made this week.

Thank you for all each of you offers to the world of acappella music.  Without  you, the genre may have died many years ago.  I appreciate each one of you.

Hi,

Here's the deal...

The Bolton Landing Barbershop Quartet Festival has a big problem that needs
addressing RIGHT NOW if it's going to be able to take place this year!

WE NEED $15,000 IN FRONT MONEY THAT WE DON"T HAVE!!!! Deposits are coming
due, airfares need to be paid, etc!   No $15,000 .... NO FESTIVAL! It's that

simple!

Now, if somebody wants to donate $15,000... GREAT! ...but not practical....

BUT... if I can get $100 from 150 people.... THAT"S PRACTICLE!

So if you've been to the festival, you know what it's worth to a lot of
people!   Is it worth a $100 tax deductible donation (to the Bolton Landing
Chapter) to see this thing continue???

I'm in Louisville this week talking to everybody I can to raise the cash!
Somebody suggested we were going about it wrong... we didn't need $15K... we

needed $1000 from 150 people!   ... so here I am!

Send me a note if you want to make a donation, and then mail it to Bolton
Festival Fund, PO Box 60, Clifton Park, NY 12065.

This has been an all-consuming passion for 10 years of my life, and I'm NOT
going to let it go down wihout a fight!

Hi Gang

Marty Israel the host of Tuesday Night Swipes asked me to forward this to you.  Hope you can tune in.

Hi everyone!

Tomorrow evening, Tuesday Night Swipes will be featuring the most ambitious barbershop arrangement ever written and performed: Walter Latzko’s Academy Award Medley.  This medley from 1973 features EVERY Oscar winning song from the award’s inception to the (then) present day.  The performance is by the 1973 District Champion Montclair (NJ) Chorus, later to merge with the Livingston NJ Dapper Dans of Harmony.  This 35 minute medley will be played in its entirety and all featured performers will be identified.

As per recent Harmonet discussions, we will also include Misty, as sung by Crystal Clear and Riptide, as well as the Mystery Cut of the night where the first correct listener to identify the performers will win a CD,  the Goofy Cut of the night and your requests if you call in, e-mail, or join in on our chat room.

Hopefully we’ll chat then.

Hi there all who will read this letter.

Many of you know I have been involved in the Bolton Landing Barbershop Festival for the last six years, and have been on the Executive Committee sinc the Chapter was formed last year.  The Festival suffered losses due to poor attendance in 2002 and 2003 following the fallout of 9/11.  This year's Festival was facing prior deficits of $15,000 and , as many of you have read, appeals from the Executive Director Bruce Checca were made to help "Save " this year's Festival.  In fact, Bruce announced this week that the chances were slim that the Festival would take place this year.

Tomorrow, in Clifton Park NY, the Executive Committee and leaders will be meeting to discuss an offer from the County to assist in producing this year's Festival.  I am proud of the work Bruce Checca has personally done to bring about this opportunity, and to several members of the chapter who are working as we speak to confirm the future of this annual event.

WE NEED YOUR HELP !!  ON TWO FRONTS!!!

1) If you have been on the fence about attending this year's Festival, OR if you have never attended and thought about coming this year, may I invite you to visit the Festival Webpage and make your reservations.  The Festival this year has some pretty incredible talent and activities including the Inaugural Bolton Landing Festival Dinner where we will celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the 139th Street Quartet,  proceeds of which will start a Foundation to provide Scholarships to deserving students in the Lower Adirondack Region of New York State.

We have GOTCHA, the 2004 International Champions as the headliner quartet, and an additional Line-Up including Flipside and Wheelhouse, Top 10 finishers at the Louisville Contest, The Perfect Gentlemen, entertainers extraordinaire fromLos Angeles, and the list goes on....  Add the 4 feature shows, the quartet contest in the park, and the "Musical Quartet Scavenger Hunt" and you have an incredible weekend.

All Events Tickets start at only $55.00 for the entire weekend, and go up to $150.00 which includes the special Foundation Dinner (intimate dinner with only 100 seats reserved with the 139th Street Quartet)...   If you delay in purchasing the all-events passes, the price goes up (after the stated date).

2) The Festival is still in need of financial contributions.  If you are in the position to make a tax deductible donation to help relieve the $15,000 debt, please email Bruce or me and let us know that you believe in the Festival and tell us how much you can afford....any amount will be appreciated.  If you, individually, or if you have a company that can make a tax deductible donation of $100.00 or more,  we will add you or your company's name to a special "Festival Believers" Program insert for this year's Festival.

I  promise you, on behalf of the Executive Committee and officers of the Bolton Landing Chapter  that the Executive Committe will work diligently tomorrow to insure that your experience in Bolton this year will be memorable.  My invitation to you is to live the experience....something that doesn't happen at any Festival in the country.

Hi there!

"WHEN YOU'RE DOWN AND OUT, LIFT UP YOUR HEAD AND SHOUT, "IT'S GONNA BE A GREAT DAY"!

2004 Bolton Landing is a GO!!

I can not tell you how happy I am to be able to report that this year's festival will happen over the Labor Day Weekend in the beautiful and scenic village of Bolton Landing, NY on the shores of Lake George!

With a 14 tear history behind us and the  tireless efforts of the festival's Executive Committee, we have secured some stop-gap funding from the Warren County Board of Supervisors. The county officials have recognized the artistic value of the annual festival and have acknowledged the festivals value to the Lake George tourist industry.

Our job now is to show them that the festival will continue to be supported by the a cappella community and that you, the attendees, can make the festival a financial success as well.

This years headliner quartet is GOTCHA!, the newly crowned 2004 International Quartet Champions of SEPSIS, Inc.  They are not scheduled to appear east of the Mississippi until November of 2005, so Bolton Landing will be your only opportunity live in concert during their championship reign!  The top 10 finishers "Wheelhouse" (8th) and "Flipside"(6th) and Harmony Sweepstakes Champions, "Perfect Gentlemen" lead the men's contingency. "Swinglish Mix", 2003 Queens of Harmony from Sweet Adeline's International, lead the ladies contingency. Friday Nights activities include "Foundation Dinner", a celebration of the 30th Anniversary of 139th Street Quartet, and the "Quartet Medalist Showcase" in the Harmony Dome.

Add to all of this the "Quartet Contest in the Park", the street singing "Quartet Scavenger Hunt", an afterglow and activities available on Lake George, and you have more than one great day,.. you have 3 great days!

Event Passes begin at $55.00 (until 8/31, $65.00 after 8/31). Add an additional $45.00 ( $100.00 / $110.00 total, depending on when purchased) and also become a member of the Festival Chorus.  Or choose the $150.00 "Foundation Dinner" Package and receive an Events Pass, Dinner with 139th Street, and make a donation to the Bolton Foundation to help spread the word about a cappella singing to youth.

If you have ever considered attending the Bolton Landing Festival, may I extend my personal invitation to attend this year. you will NOT regret it!!

Order you Events Pass on-line at WWW.BOLTONLANDINGCHAPTER.ORG, or by mail to Bolton Landing Chapter, PO Box 60, Clifton Park, NY 12065.

Hi there to all who have followed the Bolton Landing Saga this year.

As a member of the Bolton Landing Fextival Executive Committee, I am forwarding a letter from Bruce Checca, the Executive Director of the Festival and President of The Bolton Landing Chap[ter.  Bruce has worked tirelessly this year to try and make the Festival a "go".  When he thought the County would help, he was very relieved....howeever, as you will read, the Town Supervisor has changed his offer and the chapter is unable to proceed.

The committee will be contacting all of those people who have pre-ordered tickets regarding the refund of their money... and we will be working this weekend with the Village officials at the Village of Lake George to plan next years Festival.  The Village of Lake George has publicly stated that they WANT the Festival in their community and are willing to work to insure it's success.

I just want to personally applaud and thank Bruce Checca for his unconditional love for the Festival, it's guestt quartets,a nd the people who have attended over the years. Thanks!

As of late yesterday afternoon, the Bolton Town Supervisor has decided that the funds that the county gave him for this  event will only be available if we agree to pay it back... a guaranteed loan....

When I originally went to him last week to tell him that we were going to pull the plug, I told him that without $20,000  in corporate support or donations to pay off existing debts, we would not have the funds available to make this year a go. He asked about a bank loan, and we told him that we could not do that, as it put us that much farther into debt, with no guarantee we would have a way to pay it back.

He came to US with the county fund idea.

So, as of NOW (Thursday, July 22, 2004 at 1:20pm) the festival for 2004 is NOT going  to happen and we are notifying EVERYONE of that fact.  We have had too many change of plans already, and I REFUSE to subject you guys to any more!

I also need to apologize to all of you for keeping you on the hook like this. I guess it was just my hope that somehow it would all work out. I've spent 10 years of my life doing this and was looking  at it through too many pairs of rose-colored glasses I guess.
I'm sorry. I hope that you can forgive, and maybe even forget. I'd hate to lose any of you as friends over this....

I've told the festival board that we need to start right NOW to raise funds for any festival in 2005 and beyond, and that I WILL NOT put on anything that isn't 100% advance funded as far as costs go! I WILL NOT put myself in this position again! Either we have the thing paid for at least 6 months before it goes off, or it gets cancelled!... before airfares, before deposits...

Thanks for all the effort to make it happen on YOUR part, and again... I'm sorry I put you through all this.

Joaner Here! :- )

The Harmony Network's Monday night show, 7 to 10 PM Eastern Time,
formerly entitled "Joaner and Bea in Harmony", has been changed to
"Monday Nights with Joaner". This is due to Bea Howley's busy
barbershop schedule...singing in one chorus, and directing another!
We offered to double her salary to get her to stay on...but nothin'
times two is STILL nothin' ! We here at THN wish her all the best in
her endeavors!

So now you will hear Joaner and "me" in harmony, the "me" being the
"guest of the moment"! Last Monday's guest was Marge Priddy,
an "almost-charter" member of my chorus, Ramapo Valley SAI, who
is currently singing with Hickory Tree, this year's delegate to
the SAI International Contest in Indianapolis from Region 15 !

Marge had a major role as "Granny" in the Hunterdon Harmonizers'
last Christmas Show, "The Blizzard of Ourz". (I had two smaller
part as Mom and the Virgin Mary...BOTH roles a real stretch for
me! :- ) She encouraged me to join Ramapo Valley by offering
to make my "Hot Time" costume....a major undertaking....and a
promise of which she claims to have no recollection!

Marge is also the mother of my NEW Baritone, Jeanne Viscito, who
persuaded her mom out of "retirement" when SHE rejoined Hickory
Tree (after a long absence, during which she served as the Mayor
of Berkeley Heights, NJ.) We are Three Jeans Looking for a Lead...
we have two prospective ones, but neither is willing to change her
name, so that we can call ourselves "Two Pairs of Jeans" :(

Ah, but I digress! If you tuned in to "Village Radio Dot Com"
last Monday, you were treated to these selections:

Hi everyone!

I want to echo what Joaner so adequately described in the post for her Monday Night Show on the Harmony Network.  It was wonderful and I would look for more shows of this type to be done, as a great time was had by all.  AND, of course, Just4(Kicks), Debut and The BUZZ were fantastic.  Just4(Kicks) has a new CD, Debut’s is coming out shortly and we’re already looking forward to BUZZ2.

This week, the Featured Cut will be a great “live” performance by one of our legendary champs from the 60s (although the performance is from the 70s).  We also have a new Mystery Cut, and if anyone can correctly guess the identity of the performers, they will win themselves a CD.  Last week, Jeff Steinhardt correctly identified the Mills Brothers and won himself the new Michigan Jake CD!

There will also be the Goofy Cut of the night and maybe a couple more surprises!

Tuesday Night Swipes is a proud program on the Harmony Network.  To tune in, go to www.harmonize.com/thn and follow the directions to the live broadcast, which is on 7:00pm-11:00pm.  We hope to hear from you during the show!

Hey everyone! My name is Sean P. Gorecki. I'm 20 years old. I'm
from Crystal ake in McHenry County. I'm looking to join or start an A
Cappella Group in the greater Crystal lake or Chicagoland area. Some
of you may have heard me at the latest Harmony Sweepstakes. I was in
the front row and one of the Nightwatch members was looking for a way
to stall and I shouted for him to tell a joke. Next thing I know,
he's handing me the mic telling ME to tell a joke and my father is
telling me to do some vocal percussion...so I did the latter. I have
a good ear, especially for bass notes and have been practicing VP for
about 2 1/2 years. E-mail me at random_sean@... if you are
intersted. Take care everyone!

Just wanted to send a note confirming the events described by Sean.
Let's face it - we were flailing out there and needed help.
Thankfully, Sean stepped up and injected life into an otherwise
mediocre hosting job. Also, anyone who is able to sit in the front
row for a whole NIGHTWATCH appearance deserves a medal of honor, or
at least a spot in an a cappella group. So hire Sean...you won't be
sorry...

Hi Gang,

With all that is happening on the network, I have been behind in thanking all of the artists that make our weekly show a success.  On July 15th, we celebrated the championships of Gotcha and The Ambassadors of Harmony, the 2004 Champion quartet and chorus of The Barbershop Harmony Society.  In addition, we featured some of the best music from the libraries of THN...The Harmony Network.

Before I tell you the artists that made  the 7/15 show great, I want to remind you all that you can hear acappella music, from barbershop to doo wop four nights a week...YES THAT'S 4...NIGHTS each week.

On Monday Night, we air "Monday Nights with Joaner", hosted by Jeannie Garrett, a Sweet Adeline Singer from the Ramapo Valley Spotlight Chorus.  Her show features a wide range of music in all styles of the acappella world, including barbershop, contemporary, vocal jazz and great street harmony.

Tuesday Nights finds Marty Israel in the studios as the host of "Tuesday Night Swipes", featuring barbershop and acappella harmonies.  Marty has a "feature cut" and a "mystery cut" every night where listeners can win a CD for guessing the artist.

Wednesday Night finds "The East Coast Acappella Review" hosted by Linda and Garry Cascio. ECAR is a Doo Wop and Street Harmony showcase, with incredible information about the groups and the music. Garry and Linda will give you a history lesson each week about the genre they have been around for almost 30 years.

This week my co-host was Catherine Cassidy Risch.  Cath and I met in freshman year of High School, and, amazingly, are STILL friends!  We sang in the Glee Club together, and although I haven't been able to seduce her into Barbershop, she has attended some with me..I embarassed her at an Afterglow in Manhattan by having Reveille serenade her when it turned midnight and became her birthday!

Listeners this week included her daughter, Laura Risch, and her boyfriend John, who, appropriately enough, were listening in from Harmony, NJ !

Since I have been unable to play "The Buzz" for the last several weeks, which is a hot request, I played several cuts from their GREAT CD as the opener of the show this week!

THE BUZZ .....Gee, But It's Good To Be Here; You Turned The Tables On Me, It's My Song, One Fine Day, Mary Did You Know, Hey Mister, You Make Me Feel So Young, Turn Around, No No Norman, Once Upon A Time

GOODFELLAS.....What'll I Do, Make 'Em Laugh

THE BOBS.....Stranger Than Love, Too Cool To Care

THE IDEA OF NORTH.....Singin' Acapella, Gotta Move On

CHANTICLEERS.....In The Still Of The Night, I Can Dream Can't I?

ACCIDENTAL CONSONANCE.....Wonderful Tonight, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Sound Celebration

MADHATTERS.....Here's to the Night, Breathless, I Love You Always Forever

KOOL SHOOZ.....Papa Was a Rolling Stone

FOURTH AVENUE.....Midnight Hour

LOUISVILLE THOROUGHBREDS CHORUS.....What a Country!

MANHATTAN TRANSFER.....Boy From New York City, (The Word Of) Confirmation

GAS HOUSE GANG.....Sixteen Tons, Sweet Hour Of Prayer

Join me NEXT week when my guest host will be....a fellow chorus memeber of mine who MIGHT be singing with ME SOON in a new quartet!!!

Check out out website for THE HARMONY NETWORK at: www.harmonize.com/THN

Join us on the air and in our chatroom every Monday from 7 to 10 PM Eastern Daylight Time, worldwide, over the Internet.

And check out our OTHER live shows, Monday Through Thursday Evenings, featuring the best of Acapella, Doo-Wop, Vocal Jazz, and Barbershop Harmony!

Check the website for links, and to find out how YOU can have YOUR CD's played on the air, too!

Hi there gang,

We are delighted to announce that on Saturday, September 18, 2004, the entire staff will be taking part in a special broadcast from 10am - 4pm Eastern time.  The broadcast will be coming to you "Live" from the annual Street Fair and Sidewalk Sale of the village of Upper Montclair, the home of THN...The Harmony Network.

For six hours, the hosts of the Harmony Network Shows, Marty Israel (Tuesday Night Swipes), Jeannie Garrett (Monday Nights with Joaner), Garry and Linda Cascio (East Coast Acappella Review) and Vinnie Haynes and I (The "APPLAUSE: Show) will bring you music from outside the studios in Upper Montclair.  We expect thousands of people to take part in this annual affair.

Now we need your help....If your quartet, ensemble or acappella group would like to take part in the activities, we promise you will have a blast.  Your performances will be heard by the local audiences on a great sound system, and you will be heard all over the world on The Harmony Network.  We can't pay you a fee (we are still raising money for the operation of the network, but we can allow you to sell CD's or to distribute info about your groups schedule and/or information about contacting you.

Please email me at RMTMUSIC@... if your group can sing during the day.  We are trying to have at least 6 quartets throughout the day, and acappella groups for the segment hosted by Garry and Linda Cascio.  We will try our best to accommodate all groups that want to participate.

If you are preparing for competition, this could be a great opportunity to brush up on your contest material to a live audience locally and a world-wide audience through The Harmony Network signals.

Please let me know as soon as possible ... we want to get some local publicity going in the next week and a half.

Thanks for your support of the Network ... it is History in the Making

Hi, Sean; Hello, all-

I'm new to the Woodstock area--and obviously, new to this group, or I
would have responded to your post a long time ago! Have you had any
luck finding--or founding, for that matter--an a capella group? My
thoughts have wended that way myself... I love to sing, did musical
theater/a capella/choral work in college and sang some live jazz in
Amherst, MA, but lately my only vocal outlet has been the local
karaoke scene. Fun, but not the same! Help- I need to sing, and I am
a total performance addict... I'm an alto with a wide range, and
sing all sorts of stuff but prefer soulful music: jazz, blues, some
folk, some pop...

Take care- I hope to hear from you, or anyone else looking for some
vocal talent out this way...

Dear Friends of Golosa, the University of Chicago Russian Choir,

Right now is your one big annual chance to be a part of the action. Come
try for an opportunity to sing this uniquely beautiful music in the
company of some of the most talented and dedicated singers anywhere. It is
once again time for our yearly auditions!

Auditions will be held this coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday Oct 2-3,
and the following weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Oct 9-10. All auditions
will take place in Hyde Park between around noon and 4:00. A typical
audition lasts about 20 minutes.

We are currently auditioning for all voice parts, although this year we
are especially seeking sopranos. No knowledge of Russian is necessary to
sing in the group, although any knowledge you do have will certainly be a
benefit to you. You do not have to be a student to sing in the group nor
do you have to be of a certain age. All you need is a good ear, a strong
voice, and a desire to awaken the sleeping Cossack within you.

Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 in Hyde Park, with
occasional extra rehearsals before a performance. All folk music is
sung from memory.

If you are interested in auditioning, please respond to this email. If you
are unavailable on the dates mentioned, please let me know when you
are available, and we will gladly work out a different time for you.

If you are unfamiliar with what we do and would like to hear a sample of
our singing, please visit our website at: www.golosa.org and click on
"music"

I hope to hear from many of you!

best wishes,

Noel Taylor, director
